The war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine has changed the lives of millions of people. Lost relatives and friends, lost homes, lost belief in the peaceful order in Europe. But the wave of support towards the Ukrainian refugees after the invasion shows the unlost humanity and the unlost solidarity. It also shows the need for leadership in all societal spheres.

On March 23, one month after the invasion, we talk about the consequences of the war and the challenges that women are facing as mothers, professionals with careers, and refugees. Our guest is Tetyana Puchkova, Director of the International Programs of the Kyiv-based independent think tank Maidan of Foreign Affairs. Tatyana will also share with us the positive perspective: what are the strengths of the female leadership, how the good example can inspire and make changes, including during a war.

Gergana Stancheva and Angela Ivanova from LAM'ON on the Road to Successful Funding for Startups Vol. 16 SHEleader in a SHEll

Gergana Stancheva and Angela Ivanova from LAM'ON on the Road to Successful Funding for Startups Vol. 16 SHEleader in a SHEll

Let’s begin the New Year with one positive news for the innovative ecosystem from the last days of 2021. The Sofia-based startup LAM’ON achieved a very important success: it got funding from the European Innovation Council and now will scale up its development and expand its operation in Bulgaria and abroad.

LAM’ON is only the second startup from Bulgaria which so far has been selected by the EIC, a body of the European Commission which supports breakthrough, high-risk innovations with a significant societal impact. Therefore, the first edition of SHEleader in a SHEll for 2022 will meet you with the two ladies that co-founded the project Gergana Stancheva and Angela Ivanova.

We will learn important tips about the application process of the EIC: why it is important to apply, how to present our project, and how to tackle the stress before pitching in front of an international jury of experts.

We will also deep more into the process of creation of a high-impactful business innovation tackling an important societal challenge: how Gergana and Angela have decided to launch LAM’ON and to fight plastic pollution with the creation of a biodegradable laminating film, what have been the stages of LAM’ON development so far and what challenges they have met and overcome.

Last but not least, Gergana and Angela will tell us more about their personal choice to be female entrepreneurs in the still male-dominated sphere of business innovation. According to the latest data, only 15% of the startups in Europe are founded or co-founded by ladies and barely 2% of the venture capital goes to all-female teams of founders and CEOs while 5% goes to mixed teams and more than 90% to male-only startups.

Albena Baeva on Ethics of AI Why and How to Advance AI Gender Equity, Vol.15 SHEleader in a SHEll

Albena Baeva on Ethics of AI Why and How to Advance AI Gender Equity, Vol.15 SHEleader in a SHEll

Digital technologies transform nearly all aspects of our life, including art and culture. Moreover, a wave of artists is taking international attention by creating an innovative type of culture part of the post digital era.

AI should be embraced by humans and has the ability to drive us to an unprecedented level of creativity, productivity and social advancement. COVID-19 accelerates this to a greater extent with now more and more jobs involving interface with applications that use AI. A McKinsey report on AI and gender bias states that the number of occupational transitions women will have to make might grow by 25% or more simply because the pandemic has been so disruptive. Is this something we can ignore? How can women use this AI proficiency and the artistic personality to advance gender equity instead of dwelling on gender bias?

On December 9, we hosted the 15th Edition of SHEleader in a SHEll with Albena Baeva who works at the intersection of art, technology and social science. She is a visual artist, curator and producer. In her interactive installations for urban spaces and galleries, she uses ML and AI, physical computing, creative coding, and DIY practices. Her work was showcased in museums for contemporary art, galleries and festivals for video and performance globally.

Moderator of the discussion: Sasha Bezuhanova, Founder and Chair of BCWT.

Sasha Lipman from Tech2impact on Tech Startups as Business Model in the New World, Vol 13. SHEleader in a SHEll

Sasha Lipman from Tech2impact on Tech Startups as Business Model in the New World, Vol 13. SHEleader in a SHEll

Our New Season is HERE!

Do you know what impact tech business is? What is the significance of impact tech startups?

There is one entrepreneurial territory where business strategies meet the desire of entrepreneurs to support societal development.

The bridge between them is #ICT - artificial intelligence, big data analytics, blockchain, and all other tech tools that give us new approaches to societal problems such as climate change, biodiversity loss, air pollution, famine, social exclusion, gender equality challenges.

For a long period of time, impact tech projects have been perceived as only not-for-profit activities. However, the boom of startup projects with societal causes in recent years has proven that developing impact projects can also be a business, and pursuing business strategies is not in contradiction with supporting the positive development of our communities.  The pandemic has shown us the significance of these projects and how important it is to support their development and scaling.

The new season of SHEleader in a SHEll starts with Sasha Lipman, co-founder of the global startup network tech2impact, which helps impact tech business projects with mentorship and various initiatives for scaling and internalization.

“There’s a misconception in the tech ecosystem about “impact”. So let’s clear up outdated prejudices about what it means to be an impact tech startup from the get-go. Startups and businesses can (and should) do both: address societal issues and generate profit and scale,” says Sasha Lipman.

Alexandrina Gindeva on Tech Career for Non-Engineers - Mission possible! Vol.6 SHELeader in a SHEll

Alexandrina Gindeva on Tech Career for Non-Engineers - Mission possible! Vol.6 SHELeader in a SHEll

SHEleader in a SHEll "Tech Career for Non-Engineers - Mission Possible" gives you answers to those and many more important questions. The career road to tech companies requires specific skills that are not mandatory tech ones. In the past couple of years, corporations have opened various new divisions and positions and non-engineers have become an important part of teams. However, the stereotypes are still alive in the digital industry, especially in high-level positions. This is a serious obstacle in creating conditions where men and women can open their full potential and contribute to the success of the teams and businesses. The need to change the paradigm has become much more obvious and sharp during the pandemic.

Some of the outstanding non-engineers with leading positions in tech companies in Bulgaria are women who have proven themselves as successful managers in times of a crisis. SHEleader in a SHEll meets you with one of those leaders - Alexandrina Gindeva and her story of a non-engineer with a leading position in a big tech company. Alexandrina was Selected for the first female-focused Accelerated Development program in Experian in 2017-2018. In April 2019, she was appointed Head of Global Delivery Hub of Experian Decision Analytics and is responsible for the delivery of the company's decision analytics solutions across all Experian regions globally with a focus on Cloud solutions. She serves on Experian Bulgaria management board, which is focused on defining, developing, and evolving our presence and business in Bulgaria.

Stefka Stoyanova from AE Ventures on Blockchain Needs You, Part 2, Vol.5 SHEleader Mind the Gap

Stefka Stoyanova from AE Ventures on Blockchain Needs You, Part 2, Vol.5 SHEleader Mind the Gap

After the inspiring first part of SHEleader Mind the Gap, it is time for the second dip into the blockchain world. We will talk about the implementation of this emerging technology in various industries and will show you several use cases. Along with examples from the practice, we will analyze the role of women and female leadership in the decentralized world of crypto technology.

Our guest is Stefka Stoyanova, Head of Operations and Marketing at AE Ventures - a project that provides initial funding, acceleration, and advisory support to blockchain projects.

Host: Anastasia Angelova - Institutional Relations Director at Nexo, a crypto lending platform.

Blockchain is the code that underpins the cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (BTC) or Ethereum (ETH). It is a distributed ledger technology (DLT) that tracks every action. Along with the public blockchains (e.g. BTC or ETH) which data are open and visible for everyone, there are private types of blockchains (e.g. IBM Blockchain or Hyperledger).

The cryptocurrency technology has broadened its scope far beyond the digital coins themselves due to its capabilities to speed up transactions, to lower the cost via elimination of the role of third parties, and to bring transparency and confidence. Blockchain has been implemented in various industries such as finance, logistic, entertainment, or health. However, there are hot topics related to this type of DLT including the issue of scalability: the capability of blockchain to manage a big amount of transactions simultaneously.

Digital Art: The New Meeting Point, SHEleader in a SHEll, vol. 3

Digital Art: The New Meeting Point, SHEleader in a SHEll, vol. 3

Digital technologies transform nearly all aspects of our life, including art and culture. Moreover, a new wave of artists has emerged and taken international attention by creating an innovative type of culture - the so-called digital art or new media art. From creative coding and processing to real-time data visualization and algorithmic art that new meeting point allows us to see the world and our life via a different perspective: to think, to interface, to communicate with new tools. To be more human by being more digital. Maybe, it sounded very strange yesterday, but the COVID-19 world has created a new situation where digital art is more important than ever. Because we need to understand and use the tech in a creative way and with a new perspective.

To be innovative is an essential part of Rosi Grillmair: an artist, creative coder, and educator working with real-time processing, digital fabrication, 3D software and data visualization by the use of community-driven tools like Processing, Arduino and vvvv/VL. Born in 1991 Austria, Rosi has graduated interactive Media as well as Computer Science in Linz and Multimedia Arts in Milan.  A recurring theme in her works is the reflection of human behavior through programmable machines. Conceptual media art, performance, the investigation of patterns and experiments with real and virtual media come together in her work by the freedom and restriction of algorithms. Her works were exhibited at Ars Electronica Museum and Festival/AT, TADAEX Tehran/IR, Medialab Prado/ES, Gwangju Media Arts Festival/KR, amberPlatform/TR and MKH Wels/AT. #bcwt #womenintech #digitalartShe was invited as a lecturer to Art and Design College Pforzheim/DE, NODE Forum for Digital Art/DE, D.A.H. Project Shiraz/IR, Kepler Salon Linz/AT, Creative Coding Barcelona/ES, Digitale Welten/DE and Schmiede Hallein/AT.

The Role of New Male Leadership, SHEleader in a SHELL, vol. 10

SHEleader in a SHEll has a special edition for you - we will present the male viewpoint on the topic of engaging more women in the digital industry. During the month of March news and public agenda are full of statistics and data that reveal the serious and still unresolved challenges to women's participation in various spheres of society. One of the spheres where the European Union continues to experience serious difficulties is the digital industry - only 17% of ICT employees in the EU are women. Bulgaria is the positive leader in the ranking with 28% but it is also not satisfactory.  We, in the Bulgarian Center for Women in Technology (BCWT), always search for solutions and good examples by stimulating dialogue and cooperation. That is why we meet you with one of the successful representatives of the new generation of male leaders in the digital industry - Alex Popov from Uber Engineering Sofia.

Who is Alex Popov? Alex Popov has 20 years of experience in the #software#industry and a strong track record as a leader of tech teams. The Creation of Sustainable Fashion, SHEleader in a SHEll, vol.9

Did you know that the fashion industry has a disastrous impact on the environment?

In fact, it is the second largest polluter in the word, just after the oil industry. And the environmental damage is increasing as the industry grows.

But there is always a solution! Boryana Uzunova – Co-founder of Impakt_ID and Kool and Konscious - works between the fields of ecology and technology to mitigate this negative impact through facilitating its transition towards a more transparent and accountable model.

One of the 30 under 30 most talented entrepreneurs by Forbes for 2019 sits in a conversation with the founder of Bulgarian Center of Women and Technology, Sasha Bezuhanova to tell us more about the challenges of the industry and the solutions for a more sustainable and environmentally friendly economy.

Empowering Women in the ICT, SHEleader in a SHEll vol.8

Empowering Women in the ICT, SHEleader in a SHEll vol.8

The COVID crisis has proven how important it is to work on overcoming the challenges in the digital industry. One of the significant problems is how to develop a work atmosphere that stimulates the talents of both women and men. The European Union continues to experience serious difficulties in that direction - only 17% of ICT employees are women. Bulgaria is the leader in the ranking with 28% which is also not satisfactory.

At the same time, the lack of skilled professionals creates significant challenges for businesses and for economic development. Starting a career in the digital industry continues to be perceived as one that requires a heavy engineering background and mainly designed for men. Those stereotypes are being brought in the new, emerging technologies-based sectors including deeptech. Only 22% of the professionals in Artificial Intelligence are women, according to the World Economic Forum.

We need to urgently change the paradigm in order to be well-prepared for the digital transformation including for the process of automation.

What are the solutions?

We are searching for the answers in the first episode of SHEleader in a SHElll for 2021.

Our guest will be Lilia Messechkova, VP, Products, and part of the Progress leadership team in Bulgaria.

Moderator of the discussion: Sasha Bezuhanova, founder of the Bulgarian Center of Women in Technology (BCWT).

Women Leadership is not a Risk but a Solution in the Time of Transformation, SHEleader in a SHEll, vol.7

Women Leadership is not a Risk but a Solution in the Time of Transformation, SHEleader in a SHEll, vol.7

Katerina Athanasopoulou, Marketing Director CEE at Dell Technologies, and Sasha Bezuhanova, Founder of BCWT.

The pandemic has shown us how important is digital transformation for our business and personal life. On the other side, the digital world “reflects” the traditional one, and various challenges and problems exist both online and offline. Women are underrepresented in the digital industry, including in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) or big data processing.

According to the World Economic Forum, only 22% of AI specialists are women despite the severe shortage of well-skilled IT professionals. The world will need 108 years to create an equal atmosphere and 202 years to close the pay gap.

Therefore, we should act now with proper measures that engage women and men and boost the potential of everyone.

  - Is technology gender-biased?

- What is the origin of the problem - our biases or the tech algorithm itself?

 - How has COVID-19 changed the digital industry?

- What are the successful female role models and how they manage the crisis?

SHEleader in SHEll, vol7: Women Leadership is not a Risk but a Solution in the Time of Transformation meet you with one inspirational and successful female leader and manager Katerina Athanasopoulou. Katerina has been with Dell Technologies for 15 years holding various fields and currently, she is a Regional Marketing Director Central & Eastern Europe at the company. Katerina and her team are focused on both the commercial and consumer offerings with the vision to present Dell Technologies as a key player and drive thought leadership in the market landscape. Moreover, the team plays a critical role in executing the marketing strategy and evangelizing Dell’s Client and Dell EMC’s Infrastructure Solutions portfolio with our customers, partners, distributors, analysts, press, and alliances.
