Ep. 248: 6 multi-tasking makeup products for when you can’t be bothered - from Milk, to MAC, Make Up For Ever + more
This episode is all about my favourite makeup items that I use when I just can’t be bothered. They’re the perfect multi-use products for those days when your hormones have you wondering if you want to stay married, or the kids have got you hiding in the bathroom for five minutes to compose yourself.
These 6 products all have multi-tasking qualities to make makeup easy and quick to apply so you can get on with the rest of your day.
If you use any of these, let me know in the DMs @beautymepodcast on Instagram and if you hear me talking about a specific product that you’ve also tried, but think you’ve found something better, I want to know!
If you enjoy this episode please leave a rating on Spotify or a review anywhere else you like to listen. I do read the reviews so feel free to leave constructive feedback.
Don’t forget there’s also a newsletter that you can read for free at beautymenotes.substack.com.

Ep. 247: Rihanna gets ugly for Interview magazine cover with religious symbolism but Madonna did it first!
It’s a cover that’s upset a lot of her fans for two reasons; one, apparently she's just not looking pretty enough and two, she's wearing what looks like a piece of headwear we would normally associate with a nun.
It's a real deep dive of an episode, starting with Rihanna’s history as a risk-taker when it comes to fashion, before going on to briefly discuss Interview magazine’s own history as a magazine that doesn’t do safe/squeaky clean content, then I’ll break down the cover, including the team, the image that inspired the cover look, the ensuing backlash and I’ll also look at the woman who first really rattled religious groups back in the 1980s: Madonna.
As always, my DMs are open if you want to talk about anything beauty related or if you want to tell me I went too far in my comments on religion – you can find me over on Instagram @beautymepodcast or you can find me on Threads @charisse_kenion or email beautymepodcast@gmail.com.
As promised there is also a blog post featuring all of the imagery and art that I discuss - you can find that here: www.charissekenion.co/ and of course I've also made a video, which you can find on my Instagram or TikTok.
If you enjoyed this episode do please leave a rating on Spotify or a review anywhere else you like to listen and make sure you're following the show so you never miss an episode!
Thanks so much for being here – see you next time.

Ep. 246: The April issues – beauty all around on the latest magazine covers, including THAT Björk cover of Vogue Scandinavia
This week I’m taking pleasure in some of my favourite magazine cover stories – from Vogue Korea's '90s colour to Rihanna for Vogue China's Gen Z title Vogue+ and Björk for Vogue Scandinavia.
I also discuss the importance of Björk to the worlds of fashion and music and of course, my old favourite topic - retouching - comes into it.
I've created several videos to go with this episode so you can see what I’m talking about and you'll find them on my Instagram @beautymepodcast as well as my TikTok @charissekenion.

Ep. 245: Punk! Irreverence! Mundanity! Let’s discuss Chioma Nnadi’s first British Vogue cover featuring FKA Twigs
This episode is fully focused on the very first cover from the new Head of Editorial Content at British Vogue, Chioma Nnadi. It’s the April issue and the cover star she's chosen is none other than singer, actress and style icon FKA Twigs.
It’s a cover that has had fashion and music lovers worldwide talking so I wanted to to break down the cover, who’s involved and share some of the feedback I received when I asked what people thought on my Threads and Instagram accounts.
As well as sharing everyone else's thoughts, I'd love to know what YOU think! So either take part in the poll below, or let me know your thoughts over in the DMs on Instagram @beautymepodcast or email beautymepodcast@gmail.com.

Ep. 243: Creating the characters of Truman Capote and the original influencers for FX Network show Feud: Capote vs The Swans with makeup department head Jackie Risotto
This week I’m talking about a new FX show, an 8-part series of the Feud - Capote vs the Swans. It’s a show I’ve been looking forward to seeing forever. It’s review time and this week it's the much-talked about Lash Clash Extreme Volume Mascara from YSL Beauty.
In these short episodes I tell you what the product is, what the brand says about it and break down the packaging, the smell and feel, and give it a mark out of 5 based on whether it matches the claims on the website and how it performed for me. For consistency, when it comes to any ingredients that I mention I will use incidecoder.com, a website specifically created for ingredient advice.
I’d love to know if you’ve tried YSL's Lash Clash or if there’s another product you want me to do a 5-minute review on. Email me beautymepodcast@gmail.com or DM me on Instagram or X @beautymepodcast.

Ep. 233: Breaking down the Mob Wife aesthetic and its links to London and style icon Lil' Kim
In this episode I’m looking at the Mob Wife Aesthetic, what it is, why it started and why at times it kind of looks like classism because some of the comments on the trend are a little too dismissive.
As well as giving my take on the reaction to the trend, I reached out to former guest, Brooklyn-born, New York-based makeup artist Isabel Rosado. She is someone who isn’t just a fan of iconic Mob Wives or girlfriends such as Adriana La Cerva, a key character from The Sopranos – Isabel has worn the look in various iterations since her teen years.
I also check in with my London born and bred friend Keisha Rachele who shares her love for the aesthetic and links it to her own style memories of growing up in Notting Hill.
I'd love to know your thoughts, especially if you're from the UK and have also noticed some similarities! DM me at @beautymepodcast on X or Instagram and be sure to check my videos on the trend over on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@charissekenion

Ep: 231: Courting controversy; how Calvin Klein uses provocation and why what’s good for Kendall Jenner and Jeremy Allen White is banned for FKA Twigs
Today I wanted to get into the recently banned advert for Calvin Klein featuring singer FKA Twigs. The brand has been hitting us from all angles with multiple campaigns for Spring ‘24 starring The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White in his boxer briefs and we’ve also seen Kendall Jenner in this campaign.
In this episode I examine the controversial history of Calvin Klein ads before discussing why the Advertising Standards Agency here in the UK decided to ban the image of FKA Twigs. I call upon writer Ata-Owaji Victor to share her thoughts on the isms of it all, including racism, sexism and colourism.
I’d love to know what do you think about the ad?
What do you think about it being banned?
Is it a big deal?
Do you feel sorry for FKA Twigs?
I’ll be sure to post a questionnaire for anyone listening on Spotify, but if you’re listening elsewhere feel free to tag me when you’re listening and share your thoughts, or DM me on Instagram or X @beautymepodcast.
Don’t forget to hit subscribe or follow wherever you’re listening so you never miss another episode, and if you don’t already know, look out for my new series The Week in Beauty. See you next time and thanks for listening.

Ep: 229: Earnestness, smoking, gatekeeping, being your own influencer and more. Some of my favourite Ins and Outs for 2024
It’s the first episode of a brand new year, and in this episode I’m talking about the Ins and Outs lists that we’ve been seeing all over social media.
As well as sharing my own list, which includes beauty, social media etiquette and gatekeeping – I want to bring it back! – I share some ins and outs from other fashion and beauty names, including former guest Mandy Lee, the fashion writer and analyst who’s also known as @oldloserinbrooklyn. I also share some comments from Kirbie Johnson, co-host of the Gloss Angeles podcast.
Of course, I also want to know your ins and outs – or, tell me if you’re over these lists already! DM me @beautymepodcast on Instagram or X and let me know. For me the lists are a bit of fun but can also be useful in the sense that it doesn’t hurt to think about our habits from time to time, and see if we might want to change something. If you're listening on Spotify be sure to add your ins and outs in the poll on the show page!
Above all else, I hope you enjoyed this episode. If you did, it would be great if you could review, share and subscribe. See you next time!

I’d love to know if you’ve tried any of the products I mention before and I’d really love to know the products that you consider to be your essentials when it comes to hydrating your winter skin.
Let me know in the DMs over on @beautymepodcast on Instagram or X and feel free to get in touch over on my TikTok @charissekenion.

Ep: 227: From Apple TV+ series The Supermodels to Hulu’s The Other Black Girl - essential festive viewing for lovers of ‘90s hair and beauty or anyone who just needs a distraction.
This week I'm talking about the beauty I’ve discovered in several of the shows I’ve been watching lately. You'll hear my thoughts on two Apple TV+ shows; The Supermodels, a 4-part docuseries on the quintessential ‘90s supermodels, and The Buccaneers, an 8-part story about young American women taking over London in the 1870s. I’m also talking about The Other Black Girl, American Horror Story Delicate and finally the Bethann Hardison documentary Invisible Beauty. Where possible I’ll give each show a rating out of 5. Please let me know if you’ve watched any of the shows I mention this episode! You can DM me @beautymepodcast on X or Instagram and I’ll also post a poll for my Spotify listeners. Also, I’ll be asking you what you can recommend for me so I can share with other listeners. In the meantime, if you enjoyed this episode, I’d love if you could rate it or write a review and definitely, absolutely share it with anyone who needs something new to watch! Ep. 226: How a London theatre company is reimagining hairy fairy tale Rapunzel, plus Hair Talks post-show chat
Today’s episode is all about the complexity of hair, from two very different angles.
The first segment of the show is going to be a conversation with Theatre Peckham CEO and Artistic Director Suzann McLean about her new all-black cast production of the classic European fairytale Rapunzel – a story about a young girl trapped in a tower in the woods with her only means of possible escape being her extremely long hair.
The second segment sees me with my friend and collaborator Winnie Awa of The Hair Lab podcast discussing how our first event, HAIR TALKS went.
Thanks as always for listening – it means the world, and if you enjoyed do please rate the show on Spotify and review on Apple Podcasts or anywhere else you like to listen. Also be sure to check out my tiktok @charissekenion and sign up for my newsletter for free at beautymenotes.substack.com. See you next time.

Ep. 225: The first Hair Talks event - IRL!
It’s been about a year since my friend and former guest Winnie Awa, founder of Carra, an AI-led personalised hair advice platform, said that we really wanted to start a series of events.
Back then I always knew it would be called Hair Talks – because, well, our hair literally talks – and I think as women of colour in particular, how we style or dress our hair speaks volumes but is not always interpreted correctly.
I'm so excited to say that our very first event is happening this Monday and that, moving forward, you can expect HAIR TALKS to be an ongoing series of conversations around the complexity of textured hair. So, in this short episode I'm sharing a little bit more about why it started, and where we see it going.
There's still time to book yourself a free ticket if you live in London - and grab a gorgeous goodie bag featuring goodies from Camille Rose, Pacifica, Liha Beauty and more! Click the link to sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/hair-talks-tickets-753070994617?utm-campaign=social&utm-content=attendeeshare&utm-medium=discovery&utm-term=listing&utm-source=cp&aff=ebdsshcopyurl
Winnie and I want Hair Talks to feel like your event – it only works if you show up and share. If you can’t make it on the night, feel free to reach out to me on social media @beautymepodcast on Instagram and X formerly known as Twitter, and for the Spotify listeners I’ll create a poll for you to get involved with.
That’s all for this week. Thank you so much for listening during these uncertain times; your support means the world. If you enjoyed this episode, a review or rating wherever you listen would be amazing. I’ll see you next time.

Ep. 224: Meditation, quality, self-reliance and questioning beauty with hair artist Cyndia Harvey
This week’s guest is the wonderful, inspiring and insightful Cyndia Harvey, a London-based hair artist who has been recognised for her contribution to fashion by The British Fashion Council and was labelled as a Beauty Game-Changer by Vogue Business in their inaugural ‘100 Future Innovators’ list.
In this episode, Cyndia looks back fondly at how her Jamaican upbringing instilled in her an ingenuity that has always fed her creativity and she also shares on her love for Vipassana Meditation and explains why she feels apprehensive about labelling something as beautiful.
I’d love to know if Cyndia's words have the same impact on you as they had on me. You can let me know over in the DMs on Instagram or X formerly known as Twitter @beautymepodcast or you can email your thoughts to beautymepodcast@gmail.com. Ep. 223: Let's review Prada Beauty Monochrome Hyper Matte Lipstick
It’s another 5-minute review and this week it’s Prada Beauty’s Monochrome Hyper Matte Lipstick.
In these short episodes I tell you what the product is, what the brand says about it and break down the packaging, the smell and feel, and give it a mark out of 5 based on whether it matches the claims on the website and how it performed for me.
This product was purchased by me but since recording the brand has sent me three other shades, including the Soft Matte formula, so I'll be sure to let you know my thoughts on that one on my socials!

Ep: 222: Behind the scenes of Sofia Coppola’s new Priscilla Presley biopic, with heads of hair and makeup Cliona Furey and Jo-Ann MacNeil.
This week we’re looking at the hair and makeup creatives who brought the cast of the new Sofia Coppola movie Priscilla to life.
I’ve split the show into three segments; starting with a little background into the making of the biopic, then I’ll be sharing my conversation with Cliona Furey, Head of Hair Design on the movie before sharing some behind the scenes product information from Jo-Ann MacNeil, Head of Makeup Design and find out how she turned actress Cailee Spaeny into Priscilla.
Also, if you want to see some visuals from the movie, I’ve made a few TikToks which you can find at https://www.tiktok.com/@charissekenion and if you’re one of my US-based listeners I’d love to know your thoughts on the movie if you’ve seen it!

Ep. 221: Growing up with Tumblr, code-switching as a mixed race woman and skincare for eczema with writer and curator Jasmine Pierre
This week I’ve got a very special guest because it's my first time welcoming a BeautyMe listener on to the show. A few weeks ago I put out an invitation on Instagram Stories for any listeners who wanted to be my guest and talk beauty.
London-based Executive Assistant, writer and curator Jasmine Pierre is my first listener guest and the conversation was so much fun and brought up a lot of thinking points for me personally.
In this episode, Jasmine shares her morning routine with some really useful tips for anyone who lives with eczema, and takes me through her early beauty influences, from her mum and grandma, to her schoolfriends and then, as so many of us have experienced: Tumblr.
If you're listening on Spotify be sure to check out my poll on the show page or feel free to DM me on Instagram or X @beautymepodcast or email beautymepodcast@gmail.com.

Ep. 219: Feeling burnt out and co-hosting The Black Beauty Club in London
This week it’s a very unscripted, minimally edited episode about two things that have been on my mind. First of all; burnout. I am FEELING it! Listen in and let me know if you’re feeling the same. The second segment is all about the value of the Black Beauty Club. Formed by two New York based women, Tomi Talabi and Asmeret Berhe-Lumax, the Black Beauty Club first emerged on Clubhouse, the audio chatroom app that took over our lives at the height of the pandemic in 2020, and today it is a real life event taking place regularly in New York and more recently and more often in London and Paris. Earlier this week I co-hosted their latest London event, so in the second half of this show I will tell you more about the club, its message and its founders.

Ep. 218: Australia-based Makeup artist and creator Tatiana Rose talks showgirls, nostalgia, comparison and performing as an introvert
This week's guest is Tatiana Rose, a makeup artist, photographer and cabaret dancer, based in Australia. I can't remember when I first fell in love with her work, but she was an instant follow. Tatiana’s work is so cinematic and nostalgic and I truly believe there's no-one else quite like her.
In this episode Tatiana shares what it was like to grow up in the circus back in Belgium, where she was born, only to move to Australia and have her world turned upside down. Suffice to say, it was a tumultuous time but it pushed Tatiana to really lean into her love of the arts, from painting to ballet, and would eventually lead her to the world of makeup.
I hope you love this one - be sure to check out all of Tatiana's social links that I've shared below and if you want to see a clip from our chat, head to my TikTok @charissekenion. Ep. 216: Meet the Founder with Zanna Roberts Rassi, co-founder of Milk Makeup. Talking makeup, the Manchester indie scene, relationships and more
This week it’s a very special Meet the Founder episode with Zanna Roberts Rassi, one of the four co-founders of Milk Makeup, a cruelty-free, vegan makeup brand that's all about easy, effortless results. Zanna launched the brand back in 2016 alongside her husband, Milk Studios co-founder Mazdack Rassi, as well as Georgie Greville and Dianna Ruth.
Zanna and I met during a hectic week of Milk Makeup events that saw her flying from New York to London to Paris all in the space of a few days. In this episode we discuss the early days of Milk Makeup, how Zanna stays fit and inspired - and I also ask how she balances living and working with her husband, all while having two children and a gig as an entertainment reporter for NBC!
Zanna, originally from Manchester, UK, is honest and open about her work/life balance and of course shares her can't-live-without Milk Makeup products. Just a heads-up, this is not sponsored!
I really hope you enjoy this one as much as I did. Feel free to get in touch with feedback over in the DMs on X, formerly known as Twitter or Instagram @beautymepodcast or email me beautymepodcast@gmail.com. If you want to see more of the Milk Makeup event head to my TikTok @charissekenion and if you loved listening then it would be amazing if you could leave a review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen, because it really helps people find the podcast. Thanks for listening, see you next time.

Ep. 215: Supermodels Naomi, Linda, Cindy and Christy retouched with AI for the covers of British and American Vogue September issues - is this the end of the model?
Have you seen the September covers of British and American Vogue yet? For some the images are a celebration of some of the most iconic faces we know, while others think it's amazing that four women over 50 are on the cover together.
Still, there are others, including me, with a variety of conflicting thoughts, which is why this episode is dedicated to the supermodels specials.
We’ve got the legends Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell on the covers of both issues at the same time but much of the talk has centred around the use of AI retouching.
I would love to know your thoughts on these images too. If you’re listening on Spotify please take part in the poll on the show’s page. And feel free to get in touch with feedback over in the DMs on X, formerly Twitter or Instagram @beautymepodcast or email me beautymepodcast@gmail.com. Don’t forget, you’ll also find a video about this shoot over on TikTok @charissekenion and there's also the newsletter, beautymenotes.substack.com.

Ep. 214: Let's review Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream All-Over Miracle Oil
This week it's another 5-minute review - but it's 10 minutes. That's mostly because I’m talking about the Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream All-Over Miracle Oil – closely related to the cult product Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant.
I’d love to know if you’ve tried this product or the original or if there’s another product you want me to do a 5-minute review on. Ep. 213: Session stylist and brand founder Danielle Igor talks hair texture, fashion and Mary J Blige
This week's guest is London-based session stylist and brand founder Danielle Igor, whose work I fell in love with after The Face magazine included her in its online Beauty Directory. While noticing a certain nostalgia about it, I was struck by the freshness of Danielle's work.
Danielle began teaching herself to do her own hair at the age of 9 and today she works with the likes of brands such as Apple, Adidas and Charlotte Tilbury as well as musicians such as Cat Burns, Jorja Smith and Shy Girl. For me, Danielle's work is a celebration of black culture, and in this conversation we discuss cultural appropriation and whether it's necessary that all stylists can do all hair. Along the way Danielle shares her first inspirations and her hopes for the future of her brand Igor Hair.

Ep. 212: Let's review Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask
It’s another 5-minute review and this week it’s the much-loved Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask. In these short episodes I tell you what the product is, what the brand says about it and break down the packaging, the smell and feel, and give it a mark out of 5 based on whether it matches the claims on the website and how it performed for me.
I’d love to know if you’ve tried this product or if there’s another product you want me to do a 5-minute review on. Email me beautymepodcast@gmail.com or DM me on Instagram or X @beautymepodcast.

Ep. 211: The difference between hot and pretty and why makeup artist Bea Sweet can't be put in a box
This week’s guest is the amazing London-based makeup artist Bea Sweet. Often compared to Queen Pat McGrath, Bea is the creative behind some truly stunning looks for the likes of everyone from singers Jorja Smith and Twigs to British-Australian actress Miriam Margolyes.
In this episode Bea looks back on the products that really got her into beauty and blows my mind when she talks about her formal music training as a child.
We have an interesting conversation around what Bea classifies as being ‘hot’ and how it differs from being ‘pretty’ and she references some back in the day websites and influences that lean more into the edgy, darker side of beauty.
Also, towards the end of the show, Bea is going to share the 4 products that she cannot live without, and they’re really interesting!
I hope you enjoy this one as much as we did. Feel free to get in touch with feedback over in the DMs on Twitter or Instagram @beautymepodcast or email me beautymepodcast@gmail.com. Don’t forget, you’ll also find some video clips of our chat on Instagram or you can see it on TikTok @charissekenion.

Ep. 210: The problem with Latte Makeup
Today’s episode is a kind of stream of consciousness thing, musing about the 'Latte Makeup' trend. In this short and sweet episode I break down the trend, how the label originated and try to get to the bottom of why the trend kind of irks me!

Ep. 208: The complexities and beauty of textured hair; why tech and data is so important with Texture Gap creator and Carra founder Winnie Awa
This week’s guest is the wonderful, award-winning entrepreneur and hair expert Winnie Awa.
In 2020, London-based Winnie founded Carra, an online platform powered by data to give people with textured hair the world over the advice and product recommendations they really need.
More recently, this June, Winnie launched The Texture Gap, an AI-driven report from Carra Labs that highlights the lack of consideration, innovation and awareness around Type 4C hair, the tightest curl pattern.
In this conversation we discuss the intricacies of black hair, why brands need to wake up to the needs of people with textured hair; why some of us are going back to relaxing our hair and our right to choose exactly what we do with our hair.
This is a conversation that everyone can learn from; from brand leaders to parents who are considering the styling options for their children so don’t hesitate to share this with anyone who might benefit.
I really hope you enjoy this one as much as we did and I’d love for you to take part in the poll over on Spotify if that’s where you’re listening. Feel free to get in touch with feedback over in the DMs on Twitter or Instagram @beautymepodcast or email me beautymepodcast@gmail.com.

Ep. 207: Ableism, empathy and creating a higher quality of life while living with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome CFS - Able zine founder Claudia Walder
When Claudia was 23 and working as a stylist she began to experience some health problems that eventually became incredibly debilitating. Six months later she was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).
In this episode Claudia shares her experiences, how she had essentially had to nurture herself, why she started Able Zine and why she's taking a break. We also discuss the importance of perception and representation and the intricacies of labelling an illness 'invisible'.

Ep. 206: PSA: Someone else's weight is none of your business
Today we’re talking about weight, or rather, I’m talking about whether we should ever talk about weight when it’s nothing to do with our own body. Meaning, should we ever talk about someone else’s weight, whether it’s gone up or down, whether that’s 'good' or 'bad'.
If at any point during this episode, there’s something you want to say or share, please do find me in the DMs on Twitter or Instagram @beautymepodcast or email me direct beautymepodcast@gmail.com.
TW: Before I share my thoughts, I do want to let you know that I will touch upon eating disorders and miscarriage so if either of those subjects feel too heavy right now, please give this episode a miss. I want to point out this is not an episode about health and I also want to point out that this episode will not even get into how race, gender or disability impacts the conversation around weight –but that’s something I definitely want to explore another time so I’d love to hear from you if you want to have a conversation.
Please let me know your thoughts; is it time we stopped talking about weight? If you’re listening on Spotify take part in the poll over there and let me know! Or you can email me direct on beautymepodcast@gmail.com or DM me on Instagram or Twitter @beautymepodcast or on TikTok @charissekenion.

Ep. 202: Makeup artist and Stila founder Jeanine Lobell on building an iconic brand, working with Naomi Campbell and meditation
Jeanine Lobell, the founder of iconic brand Stila, is this week’s guest and it’s one of the best conversations I’ve ever been lucky enough to have. Jeanine started out as makeup artist – and still is today – and in 1994 she changed the face of beauty with her whimsical, functional brand.
In this episode I ask Jeanine to take us all the way back to the ‘90s – what did it take to build a beauty brand back then? Was it easier or more difficult compared to today? How much did Estée Lauder pay her for her brand in 1999??
Jeanine is the definition of an innovator and I feel that future beauty founders could learn so much from her. She shares so many amazing, inspiring and fun stories of the decades she has spent in the beauty industry, and also shares what she would do differently if Stila launched today.
If you love this episode I would love it if you could write a review on Apple Podcasts or leave a review over on Spotify. It makes a big difference.
While you’re at it, if you subscribe to BeautyMe wherever you listen, you’ll never miss another episode. Be sure to head to TikTok to see my video content with Jeanine @charissekenion and definitely check out this week’s newsletter where I share some really lovely insights from Jeffrey Fulvimari, the illustrator who created the legendary Stila girls.
