Dye Hard Fan: Turning a Passion into a Successful Side Hustle
Emily Modelevsky, owner and creator of Dye Hard Fan joins Paige and Ryan on the Behind the Leash Podcast to talk to us about how her side hustle started, how it's going and what lessons she learned along the way.
A true entrepreneur at heart, Emily turned a bleach mark on her Eagles hat into an online business. Using Instagram, a website and an etsy page, Emily creates custom orders for 'Die Hard' Fans across the globe. Shipping orders as far as the UK, word about Dye Hard Fans has spread quickly.
Recently, Emily announced her new Dog Sweatshirts on her Instagram page. Being a dog lover and dog owner herself, she started this line due to the fact that she was unable to find clothing for her dog that fit just right. Emily has teamed up with a local Philly seamstress in Philadelphia and together they can create the perfect custom tie dye piece for your pup.
From Friday, April 30 to Sunday, May 1 Tails and Ales Philly will be hosting an Instagram giveaway on their Instagram for 1 lucky pup to win a custom sweatshirt.

Paige and Ryan Give Each Other Advice and Share What They Have Enjoyed Doing This Past Year
In this episode of the Behind the Leash Podcast, Paige and Ryan of Tails and Ales Philly, get to sit down and talk for 13 minutes (with all the dogs in the background) about their dog business plans and share personal advice for each other.
When Paige started Tails and Ales she never imagined it would be where it is 1 year later; February and March filled up, she is getting 7-8 new inquiries a week and has had to put meet and greets for daycares on pause.
Tails and Ales has been a lot of give and take when it comes to personal time off and focusing on individual growth for both Paige and Ryan. Weekend dinner talk is never complete without focusing some time on talking about dogs or our business and the vision for the future.
Tails and Ales is constantly in an upward movement of growth to ensure that we can continue to provide the best care for the dogs. We always have new ideas that we are waiting to share with our community and clients...like merch? parties? group hikes? The ideas are endless and hope we can let you in on some of these plans soon!
With that said, Ryan and Paige have a variety of passions that include the dogs (duh!), but also ones that are completely different and don't fall under the pet service industry. These passions are also worth exploring for each of them and ones that you may see pop up a little more often... but don't worry, we aren't going anywhere or sacrificing any of our dog days.

Laurie Baum, better known as the @the.knot.chick on Instagram, creates macramé pieces that will fill your space with positive energy. Her bio on Instagram says "hand knotted with love" and sincerely, she really does put her whole heart into every piece.
In this episode Ryan and Paige, co-hosts of the Behind the Leash Podcast, had the pleasure of speaking with Laurie regarding all the faucets of what she used to do as a side-hustle but took on full time during the pandemic. In this episode, Laurie opens up and discusses mental health, therapy and healing. All of this lead her on her journey that brought her to create "The Knot Chick", a hobby that she turned into a business.
Before you listen to this episode, you need to know that Laurie was one of the kindest guests we have had on the show. She was natural, fun, open and truly humbled. This journey that she is on, is one that she is thankful for. She doesn't take any order for granted and in fact appreciates every order more than you know.
Speaking as a co-host of the show and as the editor, this was an episode I had just as much fun recording as I did editing. Seriously, I started laughing to myself as I was cutting audio and was torn between what I should keep and what I needed to forgo to create a cohesive episode. ,

Ling Phan of the Picnic Palette Co on Not Waiting for Perfection
It was such a pleasure talking business with Ling Phan, Founder and Owner of Picnic Palette, Philly's first luxury picnic & events consulting company that specializes in small intimate events for a variety of occasions like micro weddings, engagements, birthdays and "just for fun".
In this Behind the Leash Podcast episode, Paige and Ryan have the pleasure of getting to know Ling on a more personal note... like did you know she has 2 dogs?! One she rescued from Saved Me "unintentionally". I only mention this because those pups have some type of magic spell that I am sure a few other listeners can relate to or at least understand.
Aside from her pups, Ling opened this business in the midst of 2020. She created a company that offered "normalcy" to her clients. This gave them an escape from sitting at home, ordering take-out and watching TV.
Let's dive into what it was like starting an event business during a time events were kind of put on hold. Let's learn about the ins and outs of the business and how creating a stellar event with Ling works.

Paige and Ryan on Taking a Step Back, Creating Your Journey and 2021 Goals
In this episode of the Behind the Leash Podcast, co-hosts and owners of Tails and Ales: Dog Walking and Boarding in Philadelphia, Paige and Ryan, talk all about why they disappeared from the podcast world, their 2020 accomplishments and their 2021 goals.
In this episode the couple gives out business advice, reminds listeners what The Behind the Leash podcast is all about, and encourages listeners to reach their own goals at their own pace. After 2020, it's easy to start comparing yourself to others, to wish you "had more drive" or could just do more. But the reality of it all is that what you see isn't always butterflies and rainbows. You can't push yourself. Paige and Ryan pushed themselves in 2020 and it caused a lot of burnout, stress and clouded their judgement.
We are happy to have you here with us, along our business and life journey. It's an honor and pleasure to share our stories and our guests stories with you.

Be Great Bowties: Growing A Successful Brand Through Connection, Feedback & Innovation
On this episode of the behind the leash podcast we welcome Thomas C. Knox, Founder of Be Great Bowties to the show.
Be Great Bowties founder, Thomas C. Knox shares his very first mistake as a business owner, what happened just hours before he tried to pull the plug on his business and most importantly how he got HERE, where he is today.
This episode is one I wish I didn't have to cut to under 40 minutes. Thomas shared so much insight to what it means to be an entrepreneurs, how to be the best business owner and the importance of a team. Sometimes we all forget that the most successful businesses were able to scale and grow because of the TEAM. The team helps not just the business grow, but also the owner, and Thomas is grateful for that support.
It is admirable to hear how thankful Thomas is for all the curveballs life has thrown at him. When it comes to his business, Thomas says his mistakes are the opportunities that have lead him to be successful and innovative. If you should take anything away from this episode it should, number 1, be the craziest WiFi name that he has seen pop up on his phone...and second (seriously the most important), is that passion, gratitude and innovation are the most important pieces to running a successful business.
Enjoy this episode of the Behind the Leash Podcast, a podcast for business owners, entrepreneurs and side-hustlers in the Philadelphia area.

Dames Vintage Emporium: Transitioning to Selling Online via Etsy and Instagram
In this episode Paige and Ryan sit down to speak with Alane Dame.
Dames Vintage Emporium is an online vintage store that you can find on Etsy and Instagram. Owned and run by Alane Dame, vintage guru, with help from Bella Stern, the marketing and strategic brains, this team is ready to take on the online vintage scene by storm. Dames Vintage Emporium wasn't always online, and in this episode Alane offers a behind the scenes look into the amount of time it takes to run an online business.
In this episode Paige and Ryan get to learn more about the story behind the clothing and how Alane started growing her unique and well cared for inventory. Alane shares what it is like continuing to educate herself everyday not just when it comes to vintage but when it comes to photography and marketing, too.
The most exceptional thing about Alane is that she is a walking billboard for her business. She may never have literal sold a shirt off her back, but with the compliments and questions she gets everywhere she goes, she gets pretty dang close (seriously! Listen to this episode to hear some of these stories).
Even if you aren't a huge fan of vintage or clothing, this is an episode I highly recommend. Even Ryan was really enjoying himself.
Make sure you continue following the Dames Vintage Emporium adventure via Instagram or Facebook and by checking back in on new inventory on Etsy, too. Feel free to reach out to Alane via DM even if it is just to say hi and connect.

Paige and Ryan: Transparency, Growth and Staying True To Yourself
Hey y'all! Just a really quick pop in episode with Paige + Ryan to discuss a huge concern in the dog care world: what happens if something bad happens.
Paige and Ryan recently made a mistake and poor judgement call that didn't line up with their values. Being transparent and honest is something that we promise to be with current clients, future clients and even past clients.
Reality: Making mistakes is normal. Nobody is perfect and nothing ever goes as planned.
Trying to start a new side-hustle or full-time business can and most definitely will be challenging. You are going to run into problems that you never thought about; you are going to have to make changes that fit the needs of clients, but one thing is for certain, you need to stay true to the core values of your business.
What are your values?
For Tails and Ales we value:
1. Providing your dog with a fun & SAFE environment
2. Being transparent & honest with humans and all clients
3. The dogs in our home are always our number 1 priority
Knowing your values can help you build rules and regulations that will assist you in creating a strong, healthy and successful business. Your values set you apart from your "competition" and by staying true to them, it's what will make you successful.
Unfortunately, Paige and Ryan found themselves in a situation that we never want to be put in again. Of course as mentioned above, things happen and we can't predict all dogs behaviors, but we can take measures to make sure we are doing what is best for all humans and dogs involved.
Have you ever made a mistake? And what did you learn from it? Send us a DM on Instagram, we would love to hear from you.

Sincerely Jude: How Quarantine Turned a Dog Lover Into an Eager Entrepreneur
We all can agree that quarantine has provided us with a little bit more time then we are used to having, right? Some of you picked up a new hobby, some of you are essential workers and continue to go to work each day, but on the rare occasion there are a few that decided to make the most of it and start up a passion project that pays. Ellie falls into this category. She started Sincerely Jude due to being stuck at home and having more time than she is used to. As an artist and dog lover, the natural thing to do was pet portraits.
Ellie Misiura, Creator of Sincerely Jude, a handmade, custom pet portrait business joined Ryan and Paige for their first in person Behind the Leash podcast recording where they discussed the story behind the name Sincerely Jude, Ellie's background and why she finally started pursuing her passion for dogs and painting.
Ellie and her partner Ari, sat down in Ryan and Paige's backyard to record episode 13...so keep that in mind as you listen to the episode. The audio quality isn't our best, but this episode is worth it so stick it out!
In the beginning of this episode you get to learn a lot about Ellie (and Ari) personally before we start diving into learning more about the business, Ellie's goals and the story of how she got to where she is. In the middle of the episode, Ellie shares a painting that she so kindly made of Ryan and Paige's first dog, Red Ale. For those of you that don't know the story of Red you should listen to episode 2 of the Behind the Leash Podcast.

Ryan and Paige Discuss Tails and Ales Unique Dog Boarding Experiencing & What Happens at 2:15 Everyday
Tails and Ales is a dog boarding, dog day care and dog walking business that Ryan and Paige, co-hosts of the Behind the Leash Podcast, started a little over a year and a half ago.
During their podcast journey, Ryan and Paige have shared a lot of their story. In this episode you get to learn more about their business and hear about their experiences boarding and walking dogs in the Philadelphia area.
Also, you won't want to turn this episode off until you learn about why 2:15pm is so significant the Tails and Ales home.
If you want to learn more about Tails and Ales dog services you can inquire on our website or send us a DM on Instagram. We also have recently made a Facebook so you can like our business page there, too.
We look forward to connecting on social media and love meeting all the doggies and their parents on Instagram.
Paige and Ryan Discuss Personal and Business Goals Including Community Outreach and Involvement
In Episode 11 Paige and Ryan give a recap on the past 3 episodes:
Hudson Table with Allen Bari located in Northern Liberties. You can follow them on Instagram
Punch Buggy Brewing Co with John Riley and Rob Clark. Follow them on Instagram
Tula Yoga Studio with Carly and Jenn. The Yoga Studio is located in Northern Liberties and they are offering virtual classes.
In the last part of the episode Paige and Ryan do a quick 6 pack of questions where they discuss long term and short term goals for Tails and Ales and the Behind the Leash podcast.
It is during this segment that we ask for some feedback and ideas related to inclusive community spaces for dogs and humans. Individuals in the Philly community have shared their stories about experiencing racism within the dog community, specifically at dog parks. I have received private messages myself after sharing articles and posts specific to the the Philadelphia dog world.
To the protesters, the leaders, the citizens of Philadelphia and the Black Lives Matter Movement: Your voices are strong and you have tremendous support from the city. For the past 3-4 weeks Ryan and I have been taking the time to educate ourselves and listen. There is injustice that is rooted within our country and cities and across the globe. Discrimination and racism is experienced everyday. Black. Lives. Matter. And there is no place for hate. To see change we have to continue to do the work. There isn't a quick fix for the work that is being done. The battle might be uphill, but the climb is necessary and mandatory if we want to truly be the land of the free and the home of the brave.
If you own a dog in the Philadelphia area, specifically the Brewerytown and Fairmount area and you feel comfortable DMing or emailing Tails and Ales, we want to hear your feedback on how the community can create this space- physical or virtual. This country as a whole needs to do better and we want to do what we can within our community without doing harm to the educators and leaders making strides toward reform and change.

Tula Yoga Studio: Balance, Positvity & Community
Carly and Jenn, co-owners of Tula Yoga Studio located in Northern Liberties, joined Paige and Ryan on the Behind the Leash Podcast. As community space owners, yogis and destined best friends, Carly and Jenn share their story of friendship, business and togetherness.
Tula means balance, and Carly and Jenn offer a lot of balance when it comes to their classes and services. Although their classes have been moved to the virtual atmosphere, they still have created a space for inclusion via zoom. Members and class participants get the opportunity to talk virtually after class, together.
In this episode Jenn touches on the importance of creating connection outside of your home right now. It’s not the easiest, but we all need to find an outlet, like yoga, to let out some energy and unsure feelings related to the coronavirus. Carly and Jenn brought such a positive energy and light to the show, after listening, you are going to want them to be your best friend, too.
It was such a pleasure getting to speak with them over nice cold beers and learning about their 4th Friday of the month happy hours….with beer! I know we can’t wait for the day they can reopen and we can attend one of those…oh, and of course the yoga class, too!
IMPORTANT: You will want to listen all the way to the end to hear what Ryan will be trying in the upcoming weeks.
Seriously though, Carly and Jenn, we can't thank you enough for being on The Behind the Leash Podcast, we hope we can meet over a nice beer from Urban Village sometime in the near future.

Punch Buggy Brewing Company: Craft Beer Culture, Collaboration and Community.
Punch Buggy Brewing Company is located at 1455 N American St, and borders Northern Liberties, Fishtown but is in the East Kensington area. After just a few short months, PBBC had quickly become “a local spot”.
Opening in August 2019, Punch Buggy is just a few months shy of their 1 year anniversary. Ryan and Paige frequented Punch Buggy on the weekends and had seen their community grow, seen the immense support they receive and have had one too many beers, too.
It was an absolute honor and pleasure to have John Riley and Rob Clark, two of the five founders and individuals involved in running the brewery on the Behind the Leash Podcast.
Pat Coyne, the CEO of Punch Buggy was unable to make the podcast recording, but I wanted to make sure he was represented in the show notes. They have had such amazing success and I hope to see more of their wins in the future as we all overcome this pandemic and can eventually go back to a "new normal".
Punch Buggy Brewery was named after Pat’s orange punch buggy from college that he would deliver home brewed beer in... hence the name.

Hudson Table: Pivoting Business Plans to Accommodate the Current Climate
Allen Bari, Owner of Hudson Table in Northern Liberties, Philadelphia (with a location also in Hoboken, NJ), opened his doors just a little over a month before the pandemic caused mandatory shut downs. Being the quick thinking businessman that Bari is, he was already creating a sustainable business plan to get his business through the pandemic- Meal Kits.
Hudson Table is an experience. It is a place you book with a group of people for a chef's night and/or cooking night out. With many different services, Hudson Table's main priority is creating a one of a kind experience with top chefs and delicious food.
In this episode Allen Bari sits down with Paige & Ryan over a beer to talk business, COVID-19 and the background of Hudson Table. Being new to the Philadelphia area, Allen has already felt the huge sense of community in Northern Liberties, but if you are listening to this episode and are in the position to support local business, try Hudson Table.
Meal kits are offered Friday, Saturday and Sunday and the menu rotates.
Soon Hudson Table hopes to offer coffee and breakfast meals to go, too. Stay tuned by keeping an eye on their social media and website and when they do open coffee and breakfast sandwiches to go, Tails and Ales Philly will also post to their social media-- Ryan can't resist a good sandwich with bacon and Paige is a sucker for a good coffee and a morning stroll.

Paige and Ryan: What is it Like Starting a Podcast?
In this episode of the Behind the Leash podcast, co-hosts, Paige and Ryan sit down in their new home, on their couch, in a picture-less living room while they do laundry for the first time since moving in 20 days ago. Yup! True story.
In this episode, Ryan and Paige re-cap their past 4 shows with their very special guests: Kate from Kate the Earthling, Christina and Alex of A Novel Idea, Blew Kind of Franny Lou's Porch and Steph Johnson of a Pet Friendly Dog Bakery.
If you missed any of these episodes, go ahead and listen on whichever platform you listen to your podcasts on. You can also find all of the guests contact details in their episodes show notes. Each of the guests had so much information to share and owned very different businesses.
After a quick re-cap, Ryan and Paige do a 6-pack of questions round where they get into the details of what it is like starting a podcast together as a couple. Learn what they like the most and find out what advice they have for anyone looking to start a podcast.
Being new to the podcasting world, Paige and Ryan know they still have a lot to learn so if you have any feedback or advice you can find us on instagram: @tailsandales_philly.
Thanks again, as always, to listening to The Behind the Leash Podcast, a podcast for Philadelphia business owners entrepreneurs, side hustlers and beer lovers.
A Pet Friendly Dog Bakery: Sharing the Special Moments, Giving Back & Being a Core Part of the Community
Steph Johnson, General Manager of A Pet Friendly Dog Bakery located in Manayunk, Philadelphia has been open since January 2018 and has already become the center of the dog community in the local area.
Chances are if you follow any Philly Dogs on Instagram, they have been to A Pet Friendly Dog Bakery and enjoyed a treat or 2 from the shop. Known to make some of the most creative and delicious treat-o's in the area for pups, Steph and her team also sell other dog supplies and even host events.
Listen to this episode to find out about all the special moments Steph gets to proudly be part of in the doggies lives, learn about one of the weirdest baked goods she shipped off and find out ways that this small business still finds ways to give back...they really give back!
Ryan and Paige had such a fun time talking with Steph... believe it or not our conversation was over an hour long, but of course we cut it down and wrapped it up into a fun 27 minutes.
At the end of this episode Steph mentions a local woman who is collecting dog and cat food, leaving it out on her door step at certain times, and encouraging families who may not be able to afford their pets food right now, to pick up what they need, completely judgement free. If you know anyone who is doing this, please reach out to us on our instagram: @tailsandales_philly- we would love to know more about this and link to it here in our show notes.

Kate the Earthling: The Art of Bringing the Beauty of Nature into your Home
Kate Shooltz is an artist, nature lover and traveler. With a background working in real-estate, Kate discovered her creative passion during a graduate class called "Green Cities" where she learned about biophilia.
Kate's enthusiasm for nature fueled her inspiration for her business "Kate the Earthling", where she creates preserved moss and plant art. With a little push from her boyfriend and family she made the leap into entrepreneurship.
Ryan and Paige had the opportunity to speak Kate earlier this week to find out more about her moss art and her business from why she started to where she sees her business being in a few years. She also shares the story behind her name! As the first guest on the podcast, Kate seriously brought her A game.
If you head to Kate's Instagram: @k8theearthling you will see a variety of pieces and types of moss walls and art. In this episode Kate discusses all of her work from her Etsy shop creations to her big commission pieces that she makes for clients all across the country.
So before you head out on a lunch time walk, go for a bike ride, or start another episode of the latest Netflix series, you should grab a pair of headphones and listen to Kate tell you all about the ins and outs of her business... and this is just the beginning!
