Betsy Goes to the Movies... and sometimes her friends go too

By Betsy & Friends
A #moviepodcast: For years my friends and I watched and shared our couch commentary on good, classic, funny, campy, cheesy, low budget, so-bad-they're-good, bad, and/or older movies that may not have withstood the test of time. I figured why not share with the world?

Each episode has spoilers, and I usually don't watch my language too closely.

Betsy Watches Super Mario Brothers
Well. I had to do it sometime. The things I do for my listeners... I made Alicia watch this with me since we were both stuck at home with covid, and now I feel vindicated for sitting through the Twilight movies for her. Listen as we try to figure out the really bad editing and over exposure in the only bootleg copy we were able to find (baffled that no one wants to stream this cinematic gem) and she gets really mad and starts calling everyone by the wrong names.

Betsy Watches Kazaam
This should wrap up the NBA players Hollywood extravaganza, unless I missed someone. That's possible. I started trying to block movies out of my awareness right around this time. The late 90's were not kind to viewers.  Listen as I get annoyed. A lot. But I still kind of have fun with it. And notice that I actually scheduled this episode like I'm supposed to!

Betsy Watches Space Jam
Every realize you forgot to do something? That was me forgetting to schedule this episode. Then I did all of the social media posts and still didn't make it live.  Anyway, I know it's a short one, but you can still listen to me actually enjoy the movie this time. If you're only going to watch one Space Jam movie, make it this one.

Betsy Watches Space Jam: A New Legacy
Well. This was a movie. I honestly thought it would be light-hearted and goofy like the first one, not a two hour long commercial for every Warner Brothers franchise. Listen as I painfully break my hiatus, and don't worry, in two weeks I'll be back with the original!

Betsy Watches Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation
I know, this is two weeks late. One day I'll be able to get back on schedule. One day... I actually wound up liking this movie more than I thought I would. I wouldn't rush out to own it or watch it again any time soon, but it wasn't a really bad movie. The acting was decent, and the special effects were good. The plot was predictable, and there were definite holes, but I mean, it was a direct to TV movie. It wasn't written to be the movie of the year. Listen along with me and enjoy!

Betsy Watches Get Out
If you listen because you like hearing me take apart bad movies, then this episode is not for you. If you like listening to me lose my mind, get wildly invested, and start yelling at the screen, then you're in for a treat! This is probably my favorite solo episode.  This movie is so good, and I think everyone should see it at least once. It's a perfect blend of horror, thrill, comedic timing without being funny, intelligence, and the reality of unintentional racism without being political.

Betsy Watches Hard Rain
This was recommended by my friend Izze when we were in the middle of an insane amount of rain last year, I think. It's just a great, mindless, predictable heist/natural disaster movie with quippy banter and great pyrotechnics. The recording is not the best in the world because I was in isolation and had to record from my bedroom, which has a lot of random background noise, but I hope you enjoy it!

Betsy Watches Cupid
If you find yourself jilted and heartbroken this Valentine's Day, please reconsider before unleashing a hate filled, revenge fueled demonic god on the world, or your friends might have to watch a movie like this one. It wasn't the worst movie I've done here. It also wasn't the best. Enjoy!

Betsy Watches Ape vs Monster
It's been a January. I feel like it's lasted 31 years, but somehow I never seem to be able to find time to do anything. I blame the cats. And covid. And the weather. And things breaking down and falling apart. Anyway! To make up for it, I felt that it was my civic duty to choose a really great bad movie, so I give you this lovely gem that I stumbled across on Showtime. As mock busters go (I actually had not heard that term before now, but it makes so much sense), this one is definitely worth it. It's full of gaping plot holes, continuity errors, a serious need for fact checking, a mix of good old fashioned misogyny and feminism, and some pretty impressive CGI. The background thumping noises are brought to you by Mr. Peepers and his new toy.

Betsy Watches Masters of the Universe
You know what would be nice? No covid. I didn't get it, but it's wreaking havoc in enough areas of our lives that the last few weeks were a little ridiculous. So between that and a broken heater, I got off schedule. But that's okay! There will not be an episode Thursday, but hopefully I'll be able to get some recordings done and get back to it soon.  I love how terrible this movie is, and I'm sure everyone will get tired of listening to me yell at the screen. A lot. Enjoy my frustration over the plot holes and how terrible Skeletor's costume turned out!

Betsy Watches Krampus Unleashed
his definitely did not disappoint. It took less than five minutes for me to get sucked in and start yelling at the screen. Victor, who hasn't had to watch a movie with me in years, was very entertained. I don't know if it was meant to be a comedy, and if it's not, then I'm sorry, but we laughed our asses off for quite a bit of it. I would also like to apologize to everyone involved in its creation for getting so mad that Troy and David weren't killed off early. The way they met their demises was worth the wait.

Betsy Watches Gremlins
Welcome to the episode in which Alicia perfects her gremlin voice and Erin gets really frustrated at Billy's lack of action! I also apparently decided to start a cross over and kept calling Gizmo a Mogli from The Jungle Book, and I kept calling Stripe Spike. But I mean, that could have worked. If there was ever a forerunner for campaigns against animal experimentation, this movie is it. Not gonna lie, I wasn't too sad about the science teacher. I did have a question after I started editing though. If they couldn't eat after midnight, what was the time at which they could start to eat? Was it after the sun came up? Noon? The mom was also the real MVP of the movie. She was a complete bad ass.

Betsy Watches Tremors 4: The Legend Begins
Four more Tremors movies to go! I figured I started out of order, so why change it now? This one lives up to the other two I watched (being the first and last), complete with humor, moments that made me jump, and glaring inconsistencies (namely, how the hell did a tea kettle and pick axe summon the worms but horse hooves never did?). I'm looking forward to watching the rest of them.

Betsy Watches the Lighthouse
I had to trick my friend Victor into watching this with me. I understand that the book is really good, and I want to read it. I think the movie would have made a lot more sense if I had. The movie though... William Dafoe's and Robert Pattinson's considerable talents were wasted. I had no idea what kind of movie I was supposed to be watching or what was supposed to be going on other than they basically died from complications due to cabin fever, and drinking lamp oil is a bad idea. Was this supposed to be a horror movie? Thriller? Drama? Maybe if it hadn't been so visually dark, I would have been able to tell. Listen as we basically spend half an hour asking each other what just happened and being really confused.

Betsy Watches Killer Piñata
Finally! A movie I actually enjoyed! It's been a minute. Erin watched this one with me. We laughed. We had our hearts touched by the piñata's plight. We were grossed out. Many thanks to my dear, dear friend Brandy for this one! Also, if there was ever a story that teaches the dangers of bullying and revenge, this one is it. We very early on started rooting for the piñata. The weapons montage was also just epic. I loved it. Listen as we also go for Lindsey and otherwise are just pretty happy when everyone else dies. Other than the store keeper. I liked her.

Betsy Watches Main Street
This movie is bad. I don't mean bad like Bloodrayne or The Room. Those at least have the makings of being cult classics. Main Street is just plain bad. It was actually recommended by my friend Luka who then watched it with Alicia, and they told me it would probably make me angry. I decided to watch it anyway because... I don't know why exactly. So listen as I try to figure out what the actual hell is going on, lose my mind over the terrible accents, and am completely miserable.

Betsy Watches Hawk & Rev Vampire Slayers
Finally! A movie I actually for real liked! This one is great. It has all the perfect elements of a so-bad-it's-good movie. The dialogue is quippy without being stilted, the characters are over the top without being ridiculous, the special effects areridiculous-- but in a good way. I'm annoyed that the first recording didn't take so I could release it on Halloween, but it turns out the recording for the episode that was supposed to come out today didn't take either, so here we are.  Listen as Hawk and Rev defeat vampires through the powers of epic montages, garden tools, and friendship (aww).

Betsy Watches Priest
Welcome to another bad movie in which we keep going off on tangents about different movies and this is definitely the noisiest episode I've ever tried to edit. Between the crickets, bag of chips, and the heavy rain on the tin roof, I'm surprised we were even audible. I dragged new friends into this episode (one slept through most of it, and the rest of us were a little jealous). We try to follow the storyline while marveling at the spectacularly bad CGI all for your listening entertainment. Enjoy this next installment in the vampire Halloween series!

Betsy Watches Once Bitten and Bloodrayne
I have very sadistic friends. This is a two part episode just so I could get these over with. Once Bitten is really annoying but it does have a few cute parts. Bloodrayne though... That movie is just terrible. Like on level with The Room.  I have a lot of episode notes up, but basically now is your chance to listen as I suffer for my art. I hope you enjoy this more than I did!

Betsy Watches What We Do in the Shadows
This is such a fun movie to watch. It's simple, funny, and it's actually good. I was pleasantly surprised at the finished result for the recording. It felt like we were way too invested in the movie and not providing enough interaction, but we pulled it off. By "we", I mean Alicia and me. It's one of her favorite movies. I had to drag her into this with me. I hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed watching!
October 28, 2021
Betsy Watches Blacula
Yay, a movie I enjoyed! Just to clarify, I did not record in the order in which I posted, so this came after Bloodrayne and Priest. Then I binge watched this, Fright Night, and A Girl Walks Alone because I had to do something. I liked this movie a lot, so thank you Brenda, for sparing me from suffering. It's the right amount of so-bad-it's-good and camp and cheese and "what the hell just happened" and "oh shit look out!". But I have to ask, what was with the make up and costuming? The humans were beautifully dressed and made up, and the monsters looked like the director gave a kindergarten class a bunch of face paint, curtains, and some noodles and told them to have fun. More notes are on the website, so listen and enjoy!

Betsy Watches Nick Knight
Wow, did this movie make me sick. Literally. Clearly whoever was in charge of cinematography has never had motion sickness. Other than that, it wasn't as bad as other movies I had to watch for this week. It was more like a pilot than a movie, which I suppose is what it was meant for since it led to the Forever Knight TV series, which I remember watching. I definitely felt that I was missing a lot of the story line, like there was a different movie before this one we should have seen first. The plot holes made it confusing, especially when we didn't get explanations for things (like Nick in the tanning bed) until way after they happened or we were given information that wound up being irrelevant. Still enjoyed it though!
October 26, 2021
Betsy Watches Fright Night
I forgot how much I like this movie! It's sad when that happens. This one was requested by my friend Kelly, and it was a nice one to watch while I unwrapped Halloween decorations. It's so funny how as we get older different things bother us. When I saw this the first time, I was already in my 20's, and Jerry trying to make out with Amy never even phased me. 20 something years later, I was so grossed out by it. Also I forgot how pissed off Peter Vincent made me with all his running away bullshit! And could Charley be any more of a hysterical idiot by constantly calling the police and trying to make people believe his story without any kind of proof?  If you haven't watched this in a while, do yourself a favor and watch for Halloween. Meanwhile, listen as I watch it for you!

Betsy Watches A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night
Welcome to the Halloween movie marathon! This year I chose vampires for the theme. Then I asked for suggestions. Wow. Either you guys hate me, love seeing me suffer, or spend too much time watching terrible movies because some of these are painful. This one I enjoyed though. Being in black and white kept you from getting too comfortable, and it did a good job balancing between supernatural thriller and the stark reality of living in the underbelly of society. Plus I'm always a sucker for a vigilante vampire, especially a woman, It never got too scary or too gory or too off-point. It was a good way to start the season. The cat though. This cat is the real MVP. I love the pictures on the movie's Facebook page. My cats seriously would have shredded me if I had tried to carry them around like that. Fun fact: Sunny can't go in a carrier, so when I moved into this house, he had to just go straight in my truck. His sixteen pound ass tried to hide under the pedals. There was a lot of yelling, hissing, bleeding, and a near death experience.

Betsy Watches Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
Well. This was... something. The animation was really neat! We did not like this movie, which is probably why we talked about every other movie we could think of and Amir and Erin worked on perfecting their Matthew McConaughey impressions. I don't even know how we got started on him. He's not in the movie at all.  Anyway, listen and enjoy as we rant about the changing plot and storylines and how much we really just don't like Polly.

Betsy Watches Johnny Mnemonic
I'm pretty sure no one sits around and says, "Remember all those great sci-fi/futuristic movies from the '90's?" Well, there's a good reason. Henry Rollins and Ice T are the only saving graces (sorry, Keanu and Dina). I realized that one of the problems I have with 90's futuristic stuff is that the movies have little vision. The main concepts weren't outside the realm of possibility for the time, and the technology and devices were actively being used then. Like fax machines, phone hackers, the taxi, the clothing styles, VCRs. Erin, Amir, and Alicia join me on this one, so listen as we try to get through it in one piece.

Betsy Watches Aquarium of the Dead
Welcome to the Aquarium of the Dead, a movie that leaves more questions than it answers: Questions like why do I keep trying to apply logic to movies like this? Why were EMTs the ones to respond to a fire alarm and not the fire department? When they said people were running around screaming, where were the people who were supposedly running around screaming? How did the EMTs open and operate an elevator when everything was on lockdown with no power? Why aren't any of the people who were attacked, especially the ones who are dead, turning? I have a lot more questions. They're in the episode notes. Listen as I try to navigate plot holes, bad CGI, and whatever is going on with the cameras.

Betsy Watches Beowulf (2007)
Well. This was... something. I remember that I wouldn't see it because it was CGI, and the few trailors and pieces of content I saw were disturbing. I was not wrong. Admittedly it was cutting edge for 2007. But as you can hear, it wasn't really my thing, especially because no one would put clothes on Hrothgar at the beginning. I also hadn't read the story in years, and while I remembered that I enjoyed it and the gist of it, I forgot all the fun details like how Hrothgar was Grendel's dad, for instance. Or what a colossal dick Unferth is. Enjoy!

Betsy Watches Tremors
Remember on like my third or fourth episode when I did the very last Tremors movie in the series and said I needed to do the first one? Well, here we are!  Fun fact: we are all 3 degrees from Kevin Bacon. Alicia's grandfather was roommates with James Earl Jones who starred in The Magic 7. It's so funny how all of these episodes are different, and there still, almost a year into this, isn't a working formula. I've scrapped several recording with just myself that worked better with other people involved, and I've gotten rid of recordings with other people that work better when it's just me. And there are episodes that I wish I had been able to record with other people but didn't get the chance. This episode definitely would not have been as good solo. I laughed so much during editing. My two favorite parts are Alicia and the horsepower and Erin and chipmunk guns. Listen and enjoy!

Betsy Watches The Warriors
Look at me, posting two weeks in a row! This lovely gem was recommended by my friend Victor. It's one of his favorites. It was interesting. I did not have a good first impression, the middle was frustrating, and by the end, somehow I loved the whole thing. Also there's some weird static thing going on throughout the recording. I can't figure out what caused it. I think I need to just give in and buy an actual mic for my phone. I can do the mic on ear buds when I watch alone, but that really doesn't help when I'm watching with other people.

Betsy Watches Sharknados 5 and 6
Welcome back! Things I have learned in this podcasting journey include the need for a hiatus during the summer. Trying to work in masks with heat indexes in the triple digits completely wiped me out. So thank you for not giving up on me, and we are back to it with the end of the Sharknado marathon! Also in the intro I say that the episode is released on Wednesdays, but it's still Thursdays. I really got a kick out of these, although all of the Aprils started to give me a headache at the end. I needed a chart. I also love how I take everything in the stride until the smart car in Rome, and that's when I start to argue that the movie is not accurately portraying something. Also, you know I am woefully out of touch with the entertainment industry today when I recognized Samantha Fox but had no clue who Clay Aiken was until I looked him up when I read the credits. There are also a lot of jumping around and dangling pronouns, both in the movies and in my commentary. For instance, Geraldo played Dr. Angel, not Dr. Angel's female assistant.

Betsy Watches Sharknado 3 & 4
You know that feeing you get when it's 10:00 at night and you keep thinking you forgot to do something? I uploaded the audio for this eight hours ago and then completely forgot to actually finish creating the episode.  Here are the next two in my new favorite B-movie series! The fourth is especially my favorite, in case you don't pick up on that after the 12th or so time I mention it. Enjoy!

Update on Upcoming Episodes
This is just a quick update on what’s going on why the episode releases became sporadic. I love doing this podcast, but when I started it, I was only working 45 hours a week, and we were still under covid restrictions. Also the heat and humidity are terrible where I live, but the West, especially the Pacific Northwest, really has it a lot worse than we do.
July 23, 2021
Betsy Watches Sharknados 1 & 2
I felt the need to watch all six Sharknado movies because of shark week. I unashamedly admit that I enjoyed them a lot, even when I had to edit the recordings during a hurricane. Listen as I try to pretend that everything happening is completely normal and get way too excited at Al Roker's coverage of the storm in the second one.
July 15, 2021
Betsy Watches Avalanche Sharks
Happy almost Shark Week! I love shark week, and not just because it's an excuse to watch really bad shark movies. This definitely falls in the cheesy, so bad it's good categories. I enjoyed it a lot. Listen as I try to keep track of everything going on and all of the loose ends and really want to punch Dale. Just as a heads up, they never show the bikini ski run, so if you watch this for hot girls in bikinis skiing down a mountain, you, my friend, will be sorely disappointed.

Betsy Watches Independence Day (1996)
Well, the episode is on time at least. I'm really unhappy with the sound quality, but after the fourth re-record, I realized I was losing commentary I had really liked, so I sacrificed sound quality to try to salvage content quality. I don't do these with a script. I just start watching and candidly talking, so the more I have to redo an episode, the more stilted and structured it becomes. I'm trying to find a better way to record that will give me better sound quality and reduce the ever growing background noise my phone picks up from inside and outside my house. I watched this a gazillion times when it came out because I worked at a movie theater that showed it. And also I just love sci fi movies with lots of explosions and cool special effects. It's a bit campier than I remember, but I still enjoyed watching it. Here's hoping you enjoy listening to it too!

Betsy Watches Howard the Duck
And we're back! Between a heavy workload, sick cat, sick me, and internet outage, things just got a little hectic and backed up. Anyway! This episode was inspired by the Howard the Duck episode from the What Will We Watch podcast, which is one of my favorite movie podcasts. Check it out!  But before you do, listen while I am very entertained and yet very confused -- a lot-- and once again try to apply logic where none can be found.

Betsy Watches Space Sweepers
Or as I like to call it, something to make me feel better after last week's movie.  I enjoyed this movie so much. You get sucked into the characters and their lives and histories, you want to fight for them, the cinematography is well done, it has humor in all the right places without making anyone look clownish or ridiculous, the pacing was great so that you got everyone's back stories and plenty of action sequences and plot points without anything getting dragged out or skipped over, and I seriously hated Sullivan. I really, really hated him. It's been a while since a movie made me hate the villain that much.  Sorry you don't get to listen to me suffer for my art, but don't worry, I'm sure I have something lined up soon.

Betsy Watches What Lies Below
I don't even know where to start with this. It's another baffling Netflix movie in that you have such a bad movie with such a good cast. I feel that there was too much of an attempt to try to make the movie more serious than it needed to be instead of letting it fulfill its fun alien-horror-b-movie campfest potential.  If you want this movie to make sense, find one of the many articles that explain the ending and premise because that was the only way I knew what was going on. I'm kind of bummed because this was so close to being so bad that it's good. Also, it turns out she's smiling at the end. I thought she was screaming. The more you know...

Betsy Watches Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again
I’m sorry for the delay on this! Everything changing at work with the lifting of all restrictions and no notice so we could prepare properly kind of threw a wrench in the works for my week. Remember when I said I would get around to a bad movie eventually? Here you go! We recorded it in January as part of the Alecia Covid recovery therapy, and I did feel some vindication. This time she was the one yelling “Why??” at the screen while I laughed. It wasn't terrible. We had just finished watching the first one, so we had some expectations that weren't met. Like not killing off Donna.
May 22, 2021
Betsy Watches Bull Durham
I know I promised a bad movie soon, but that definitely did not happen this week. This is a really great movie! I chose it at Erin's suggestion because the Bulls' first home game of the season was Tuesday. I had never seen it before. I was not disappointed. Listen as Erin and I wax nostalgic about old Durham (more so for her than me since she's lived in Durham her whole life whereas I didn't move here until 2010) and laugh a lot.  Also this is the 21st episode, which means my podcast can legally drink.
May 13, 2021
Betsy Watches El Mariachi
For Cinco de Mayo, I start with a little history lesson about the origins of the holiday, which actually have nothing to do with Mexico’s Independence Day (and came along about 50 years later), and then I thought, “why not choose a movie that actually kind of personifies what Cinco de Mayo is all about?” So I give you El Mariachi from Robert Rodriguez, a movie about an underdog who never asked to be dragged into a fight against a bigger, badder enemy but wins the day. Once again, I wound up doing a really good movie. I’m completely deviating from what this podcast was originally about, and that’s okay. I can do great movies sometimes! Next week’s is another great movie too, for that matter. Don’t worry– I’ve got a really bad one coming up.

Betsy Watches The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn 2
AKA, How Alicia Learned to Fast Forward Using an Apple TV Remote. I am so happy that this is the last one! It starts with the kitten sneezing, which I thought was adorable, so I kept it in. Plus that may be the only redeeming quality about this whole thing. This recording is definitely lackluster. We were just completely done by the time we got around to this one. I edited out so many yawns, but I was hell bound and determined to get it over with. Ironically, this was the best movie out of the saga if you take out the whole imprinting bullshit thing. It just got down to action, expanded on vampire gifts, and got away from the horrible gaslighting/manipulation/control abusive relationship model. I didn't say it was good. It's just not as bad as the rest.

Betsy Watches Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 1
In the interest of full disclosure, the cats make up about 75% of this episode. My rants make up the other 25%. So much yelling at the screen... so much.  Listen as I get very confused (again), Alicia and I have a difference of opinion regarding the definition of the word "crazy", and we coin the phrase "Skelabella". You know, instead of Skeletor. I was definitely over it by the time we got around to this one. The amounts of dysfunction and bizarre religious beliefs that were crammed down our throats culminated in one of the worst endings I have ever seen.  Enjoy my raging!
April 22, 2021
Betsy Watches Twilight Eclipse
Three down, two to go. This is going up so late because it took the better part of a week to get through the editing. One again I obsess about hair, Alicia relives some of the more embarrassing moments of her adolescence, we both still can't stand Bella or Edward, and pressuring your partner to do anything they don't want to do is not cool.  Episode notes are on the website, so enjoy my misery!
April 15, 2021
Betsy Watches Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter
Happy post Easter! This one came from my friend Andi (although I had been sitting on it for a minute waiting for the perfect opportunity to use it in the podcast). We both felt that Easter was that opportunity. One of the things I love about this movie is that it chooses to focus on how Jesus preached love and compassion for everyone by having him be a total bad ass who saves the lesbians who are being targeted by vampires even if the movie is pretty bad. It's so bad that it's good. I enjoyed watching this one.  Episode notes are on the website, so check them out.

Betsy Watches Batman: The Movie
Holy great movie, Batman! Erin and I loved watching this one. It was recommended by our friend Neal who promised I would not be disappointed, and he was right as you can tell by how much we start giggling about two minutes in. You can all listen to me suffer through terrible movies another time. This one was completely worth watching. Listen as Erin and I make it dirty in a way that would make poor Robin really uncomfortable, laugh at Robin's catch phrases, get confused by the villains, and wonder what Batman was thinking when he fell for Catwoman's disguise. Other than the obvious of course.

Betsy Watches Waking Ned Devine
This is the perfect movie for St. Patrick's Day for me. It's hilarious, whimsical, charming, funny, delightful, very well written, and completely sucks you in. It's one of my all time favorites, and I'm kind of mad at myself for going so long between watching it the first time and seeing it again. Alicia, Erin, and the cats joined me for this episode. We were so tired when we recorded this, but it was completely worth it. Listen as we marvel over the scenery, we laugh at the characters' antics, and Alicia gets really disturbed by the ending.
March 17, 2021
Betsy Watches Twilight New Moon
Yes, there's more. Also, while we decided to do all five movies, they are not going to be back to back.  I love how gleeful Alicia is at the start of this episode. Admittedly we were getting a little punchy because we had just watched the first one. If you want to know my feelings about the fact that they cut Jacob's hair so he could become part of the wolf pack, read the episode notes on my website-- although I will admit that I just couldn't get past the horrific wig.
March 10, 2021
Betsy Watches Twilight
Wow, this movie is a lot of bad. To give you the run down of how this happened to come into my life, Alicia had just recovered from Covid, and in a moment of weakness (there was whiskey), I told her that because I knew she loved the movie that if she wanted to, we could do it for the podcast. Needless to say, she was all over it. My plan was to just do the first one, and now there will be five. Not back to back though-- I don't hate myself that much! Episode notes are up on the website, so tune in, leave a rating and review, and enjoy my misery!

Betsy Watches It (2017)
I, in my infinite wisdom, decided to watch this alone in the middle of night when everyone else was asleep. I have no idea why I thought it was a good idea at the time. Even editing this scared me all over again, especially when Alicia walked past my room in the dimly lit hallway, and all I saw was her dark reflection in the warped mirror at the foot of my bed while I was at the part with the picture in Stanley's father's office. The episode notes on the website explain why I glossed over the bullies and Bev's abuse, so if you want more information on that, check out the blog post.  I don't think I'm ever going to 100% be okay with clowns again.  Also I recorded this on January 14, so my household is out of quarantine. We were really lucky because I didn't catch Covid at all according to the three tests I took, and Alicia recovered pretty quickly with minimum long term effects.

Betsy Watches Dangerous Lies
This one was brought up to me on Twitter by the folks at the Choose Films podcast, and I figured it was the perfect way to round out the Valentine's Day theme. It has a great cast. The beginning is full of implied plot devices, but don't worry because the plot and timeline are both such convoluted train wrecks that you will never remember any of them. It was not the best movie I've ever seen. It was made even worse by the fact that the first recording didn't take, so I had to watch it again. So listen along while I try to wrap my head around the plot holes and red herrings and talk over the cats in the background, who have decided that when I record is the perfect time to start playing.

Betsy Watches Zombeavers
Welcome to the Valentine's Day episode of my podcast! I really couldn't think of a better movie than this one to celebrate. Romance sex, betrayal, medical toxic waste infected zombie beavers... it's just perfect! I also convinced Alicia to make another appearance on the podcast and watch it with me. This movie was sent to me last year by my friend Izzie. She is a never ending source of bad movies, and this is only one of the many that will be on this podcast that she sent my way. The tiny squeak you hear after Alicia yells at me for practicing belly button discrimination because outies weird me out is her kitten. I also got him sneezing. It was adorable.

Betsy Watches Velocipastor
I. Love. This. Movie!!! My friend Andi sent it to me over a year ago. It is so wonderfully, delightfully bad! A preacher becomes a weredinosaur called a velocipastor, and let me tell you, nothing was spared for the special effects! As in they really didn't go out of their way on this one. But the dialogue, story, low budget, everything comes together for a cinematic masterpiece that I could watch over and over. I wonder how many times I'm going to use the words, "Cinematic masterpiece" in this podcast. Notes are on the website, please make sure to rate and subscribe!

Betsy Watches Your Highness
This is another one of my favorites. It is crude, hilarious, and over the top. It was also exactly what I needed after watching The Room. In fact, I watched them back to back just to restore my mental equilibrium.  I have absolutely no idea how the cast pulled this off with straight faces, but I would love to see a blooper reel from it. If you want to watch this one too, I found it on Peacock. This episode contains spoilers and language. Betsy Watches The Room
We all knew this one was coming. My friends Elaine and David just convinced me to get it over with sooner rather than later. It was kind of like pulling off the band aid except the wound really requires about fifty stiches, and you bleed out trying to figure out if you did the right thing or not. Yes, this movie is that bad.  Episode notes are on the website! I hope you enjoy my suffering. If you decide that you want to watch this one for yourself, I found it on YouTube.

Betsy Watches Jaws
This is another one I never saw before, and I feel that this movie really aged well! For me it wasn't scary so much as suspenseful. My friend Erin, who had never seen it either, watched it with me. It was great even though we kept going off topic and had to rewatch the scene in Quint's house three times because we couldn't stay focused.  Also there are more cameo appearances by my cats because they know that Erin loves them, so they like to flaunt themselves in front of her. Episode notes are on the website! In addition to spoilers, there is language, so if you're easily offended, beware! Please rate and subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts.

Betsy Watches Tremors Shrieker Island
Trust me to start watching the Tremors franchise backwards. I actually hadn't seen any of them until I saw this one. This was recommended by a friend who apparently knows me and my movie tastes very well because I thoroughly enjoyed how bad it is. It's on Netflix if you want to see for yourself.  Episode notes are on the website, so enjoy my take on continuity errors and baffling dialogue!

Betsy Watches Die Hard
We had a bad holiday movie, and now we have a good holiday movie! I forgot how good this movie is. It has humor, action, me yelling at the screen-- a lot--, and guest appearances by my cats who decided that while I was recording was a good time to get zoomies and beg for food. So listen, enjoy, and check it out on Amazon Prime if you want to relive this holiday classic yourself.

Betsy Watches the Star Wars Holiday Special
I did it. I watched the Star Wars Holiday Special, and I dragged my friend Alicia with me. To be fair, it was her idea to watch it in the first place. I figure it's the perfect movie for the holidays, so enjoy! Contains baffling storylines, repurposed footage, spoilers,  language, and a brief reference to Wookie porn because Itchy is a dirty old man. I mean Wookie.   The copyright for the movie poster is held by the artist and/or studio and is not my intellectual property. It is reused here under the terms of the fair use act.
