Ain madhyaratri by Dasoo Vaidya is a children's story of curiosity and fear rolled into one... When the outhouse of the village teacher's house starts making noises of ghungroos around midnight frequently, the fear of a dancing ghost grips the whole village...it becomes the talk of the village... A retired army man leads the whole village and whether the villagers are able to find the ghost forms a wonderful and engaging story... 

Dasoo Vaidya is an award-winning children's author who writes stories that stimulate the children to imagine beyond their routine lives thus enriching their world with different experiences.

In this story, a small girl fondly called 'Dori' who excels at rope jumps in school is a daughter of a debt-ridden farmer. The insecurity of farmer suicides happening nearby grips the whole family when Dori's father is unable to raise even little money to pay back debt and Dori burns all the ropes in the house including her favorite jumping rope to keep her father from hanging himself. 

In this story from his Award-winning book 'Vijeta', Author Umesh Ghevrikar shows us how small dreams are killed due to harsh realities...

In the story “Lifestyle”, the author takes us on a journey of a family, who is trying to adjust to the changing times and the changing lifestyles of the gen x. A family with two intelligent and beautiful daughters. While the elder one takes the old, conventional route, the younger ones lifestyle and choices, keeps her mother worried and baffled, until everything falls into right place.

This story is written by Shambhavi Joshi, a retired school teacher and a counsellor, who has a keen eye for human emotions and relationships.

In this Children's Day special episode of Bioscope, legendary actor, writer Dilip Prabhavalkar, known for his roles like Chimanrao, Chaukat Raja, Tatya Vinchu, Gandhiji in Lage Raho Munnabhai, shares with us stories of his child hood and also tells us what it took to win national awards and win hearts of generations...

counselor“Navi Olakh” is a story of a young girl who is engaged to be married. Blissful, until one day a riot hits the town, she is protected by a person of the enemy religion. An incident beyond her control, but it reveals a new face of her fiancé and of herself to her and the world. This story shows how people give more importance to religion than being humans first.

“Bramhanacha Dev” is a story of a group of boys in their late teens, who just enjoy being a nuisance to the whole village located in Konkan. Be it pulling pranks on the village teacher to even teasing girls. Their pranks intensify until one day they throw into a ditch a God’s statue, only to ultimately realize that it is time to grow up...

This story is written by late Hamid Dalwai, a great social thinker and reformist. This story has been written almost fifty years ago but remains contemporary in the social ethos that it projects.

“Sub normal” is the story of a mentally challenged and the quest of his normal school friends to make his teachers, school and society in general accept him. Things become a lot easier when a hidden talent of the boy is discovered accidentally. He comes short of becoming a hero for the school, but whether his father will accept him is the question that is troubling that innocent mind.

Author of the story Umesh Ghevarikar is an award-winning and a sensitive school teacher who takes up innovative projects with children to keep them positively engaged in learning.

"Chor" is a story of a 10-year-old who is labeled a thief when he is found stealing a motorcycle. The boy is dragged to his school, and his class teacher is asked to handle the issue. In his quest to avoid sending the boy to a correctional home, the teacher discovers why the boy was attempting to steal the motorcycle, which leaves him speechless. The story delves into how we as a society often fail the children around us.

Author of the story Umesh Ghevarikar is an award winning and a sensitive school teacher who takes up innovative projects with children to keep them positively engaged in learning.

Everybody loves a good story!!!

Since time immemorial, we humans have been fans of good stories.. We love listening to stories, watching stories and telling stories, which may be entertainment, mythology, value education, or plain simple gossip…

Our brains are instinctively wired to learn through stories and pass on this information or knowledge to others..

That’s why cavemen told stories through their cave drawings… Stories of valour, bravery and survival… all through wall drawings in caves…

As language developed, the holy scriptures like Ramayana and Mahabharata came to the fore, which not only entertained the masses through their narrative, but also imbibed religious, cultural and moral values among people through their multi layered storytelling… They gave societies role models…

So did the folklore and Moral Stories… stories of do’s and dont’s….

Keertans were a common entertainment medium, through which the keertankaars would not only give value education to people, through religious story narrations, but also make statements about the social evils and how people can live the good holy life…

Till early 18thCentury, stories in India were limited only as means of religious, mythological patriotic and philosophical outreach… However, with exchange of literature between Indian languages and the west, Indian authors realised that Contemporary Living can also be a wonderful source of stories…

And then there was no looking back… Over the years, thousands of writers from all walks of life started writing about their life stories in different forms… Thus Indian literature developed a new zeal of transporting a reader into a land unknown and experiencing life through the eyes of the author…

That is the best part about stories… They let you live a thousand experiences without really leaving your seat…

In India, the experiences that stories give becomes even more vibrant with multilingual, multicultural experiences joining hands through translations…

Marathi is one such language which publishes maximum literature… original Marathi literature and also literature translated from other languages…

However, with advent of digital age, the out reach of books has slowly begun to diminish, but the writing of stories continues… there are many writers today whose writings reflect the contemporary socio politico and economic phase that the Indian society is going through… These writers tell their stories in their own style… They give us an experience of a slice of life which we would otherwise never know exists…

We at Ep.Log Media, present “Bioscope”, a weekly show in which through dramatic reading of Marathi stories written by various writers in different parts of Maharashtra we want to bring to the Marathi audience from world over the experience of contemporary living in Maharashtra… different lifestyles, characters and incidents that spark a thinking and understanding of not only the society but also the human nature singularly and collectively…

Rima Sadashiv Amarapurkar, an award winning film maker, a writer, a film preservationist, a voracious reader and a firm believer in the power of story telling, will be curating and narrating the stories. Rima has been rooted in rural Maharashtra through her work on gender sensitisation and capacity building in the rural youth. She has experienced the change that a good story can make to the life of a listener, and now wants to bring this experience to the world of Marathi Podcast.
