The four seasons can be a direct reflection of how we should operate in our Music, Career, Art and in Our Lives. Ecclesiastes 3:1 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens There is beauty in every season of our creative life. It's important that we know which season we're in so that we can adequately thrive in it. Spring represents preparation, renewal and new life and ventures. Summer Represents Maintenance, hard work and going into life full speed ahead. It's the peak of productivity, artistry, etc.  Autumn Represents Harvest, Celebration and Pause for Gratefulness.  Winter represents Rest, Care, Trust and Peace while taking a much needed break from our work. Your seasons recur and regenerate and they don't necessarily have to match up with the physical seasons of today.  Dear Black Girl Making Music, Take your time. There is no rush. It's okay to go slow. There are benefits to being a beginner. NO ONE KNOWS WHO YOU ARE: You have more room to make mistakes without anyone seeing You have more room to try new things out and experiment with your sound without losing a following you've built over time. You can change your mind without people knowing. There are benefits to growing slowly: You build a strong foundation You aren't rushing the process You can make sure that that what you create is to your standards, authentic, and true to you. It ensures that you're not trying to be "trendy" and follow the ever changing "trends", but that you create music you believe in. It allows you to create great music without getting overwhelmed, discouraged or burned out. Builds Character and Discipline for continued success.  How committed are you to your goals? Often we say that we're super committed, but our work ethic says otherwise.  Dear Black Girl Making Music, In order to align yourself and your music with the right audience for the long haul you must first figure out your why, who your audience is and what your message is. There are 3 Vitally Important Steps to Achieve Musical Success Determine your Why Define Your Audience Share Your Message  Notes on the Episode: 1. Determine Your Why Your Music Career can be hard, having a why makes it much easier. When you feel like giving up, your why will keep you going Your Why will keep you from conforming to standards that don't align with your why You will encounter failure before success and holding onto your Why makes it easier Discouragement is Normal Knowing your why helps you hold onto your dreams Your Why doesn't have to be super deep 2. Define Your Audience Your Art Needs an Audience. It's important to define who your audience to better connect and resonate with them You are not for everyone. That is a mistake most people make The genre you choose determines who your audience is Learn To Think Like Your Audience Where do they live? What are their struggles? What are they passionate about? Connection goes way beyond the music.  You want a soul connection with your audience (comes in handy with marketing) 3. Share Your Message What do you want your music to say to others? What do you want your life to say? Use your experiences to speak to other people and create authentic art. Listen to this song:  Maybe your message is political, spiritual, relational. Your messages can change over time All of your music doesn't HAVE to be about this, but generally your brand and music and image SHOULD.  Dear Black Girl Making Music, Bad Company Corrupts Good Character. Choose Your Community Wisely. In This Episode of Black Girls Make Music We Talk About How Relationships Affect Your Art and Why Community is Important and How To Find It. Toxic Relationships can be good for inspiration and have made GREAT music, but it's detrimental long term. Some Artists Sabotage their lives in the name of creativity and art. How You Can avoid this. If you're not well, your self esteem, health and music suffers Having a solid community is so vital and important to your success as an artist You have enough problems alone, you don't need friends that make you feel like crap as well. My personal story of letting go of toxic relationships, and how it improved my music. We can't choose all of our community (like our family), but we should curate the parts that we can (like our friends). You can have and belong to multiple communities.
