#49 Sugar, Salt & Racism

#49 Sugar, Salt & Racism

In this episode of Black Health Lit titled "Sugar, Salt, & Racism," host Rachel Rae delves into the intricate connection between sugar, salt, and racial health disparities. March being National Nutrition Month sets the stage for a critical examination of how targeted marketing of sugary and salty foods perpetuates health inequities within Black communities. From the deliberate placement of advertisements to the availability of processed foods in neighborhoods, systemic issues exacerbate health conditions like obesity and hypertension. The episode explores the interplay between food insecurity, sodium intake, and socioeconomic status, highlighting the urgent need for education, advocacy, and policy changes to dismantle these structures of inequality. Despite debates surrounding FDA proposals on sodium reduction, the discussion underscores the importance of collective action in reshaping the narrative around health and racial justice. #16 Decoding Obesity

#16 Decoding Obesity

Did you know that Black American women have the highest rates of obesity in the United States? About 4 out of 5 Black American women and 7 out of 10 men are overweight or obese. When we are overweight or obese we are more likely to suffer from high blood pressure, high levels of blood fats, diabetes and LDL cholesterol which increases our risk of heart disease and stroke. Today’s episode is titled “Decoding Obesity”. I had a chance to talk with Dr. Jamy Ard, MD about obesity as disease, food swamps, obesity, treatment barriers, legislation, and how we can all take action to get legislation passed for the treatment of obesity.

Dr. Ard is a clinical researcher focused on studying strategies to treat obesity in adults. He co-directs the Wake Forest Baptist Health Weight Management Center, where he oversees the medical weight management programs. In their center, their teams use a variety of state-of-the-art approaches to treat obesity, ranging from surgery and medications to lifestyle therapy with remote monitoring. He has particular interests in working with specific populations of adults who either suffer from obesity disparities or where obesity treatment is particularly challenging. This includes individuals from ethnic minority groups like African Americans, older adults, and those with severe obesity. He is also a HBCU graduate of Morehouse College and has been a featured as a contributor in Blavity News.
