Blood Sweat & Careers

By Austin Mark, Mallory Kaufman, Katherine

Multi-passionate entrepreneurs & millennials Mallory Kaufman(she/her), Austin Mark(he/him) & Katherine Peach(she/her) are joined by experts, innovators & advocates who carved their own path & embraced finding meaning at work, & (dare we say?) purpose in their lives. We break down what it means to assemble a dream career, make a living doing more than one thing, & thrive in today’s trash fire of an economy. We believe podcasts can be more than one thing too, so expect a splash of pop culture, business know-how & a healthy dose of skepticism. Follow along @bloodsweatcareers!

Survival Jobs

Survival Jobs

Survival Jobs: Is it a a phrase from multi-hyphenate jargon, career pivot or even a problematic term? Culturally, young people have shifted from gaining work experience (and paying for cars, college or just supporting the family) to gaining the "right" kind of work experience. Even as the pandemic displaced so many workers, there are stigmas around what’s a “worthy” job and the "right" way a career should progress. According to backstage.com a “survival job is a job someone takes to pay the bills while pursuing a career they love.” Co-hosts Mallory, Austin and Katherine circle up to discuss a listener suggested topic (thanks Kristen!). We parse this definition and more by exploring the complexities, hang ups and privilege tied to the concept.

Midseason Mutihyphenate Catch Up: Where Are Your Hosts Now?

We’re back! After major moves (we’re almost bi-coastal?) and literal surgery (on the throat, no less) your three hosts gather for a quick and loose catch up to talk what’s new in their lives and chat about what’s to come in the second half of the inaugural season. Mallory, Austin and Katherine also share highlights from past episodes (spoiler alert: Austin and the rest are calling favorites between these digital creations) and what to look forward to in upcoming episodes with financial experts, cosmic bosses and HR powerhouses who share their insights to how to make it as a multihyphenate.

Maker Manual w/Maker-Art Handler-Sustainable Skateboard Crafter Eric Angus

Maker Manual w/Maker-Art Handler-Sustainable Skateboard Crafter Eric Angus

This week on the pod we speak with Maker Eric Angus.

Eric opened our eyes to the maker universe and showed us how the term is certainly in conversation with multi-hyphenate. Eric makes sustainable skateboards, works with cement (have you ever seen a cement lake?), is on the install team at an art museum AND is starting his own collaborative studio (phew 😅)!

Identifying as a maker has certainly given Eric confidence to move from one hands-on frontier to the next...perhaps the same way your confidence can flourish once you’ve realized the strength being a multi-hyphenate offers.

It’s the professional through line that flows from gig to gig with Eric that so impressed our hosts. Eric not only seeks out work he can do with his hands, but also infuses each pursuit with purpose! Sustainable skateboards so your punk rock actions of “jammin’ with a city” can also be an emblem of the environmentalist movement: he sees skateboards as a tool (through their grinding and slamming) that can help tear down the concrete jungle and invite nature back in... He even sees purpose in his time spent at a ski shop tuning skis (even though he was a professional snowboarder!!)

By the end, we decided that the purpose Eric carries into his work is simultaneously very real and very much just his attitude. Why not listen and you be the judge?!

You can find Eric and what he makes at:
@angus_studio

His skateboards live at:
@anthropocene_skateboards

If ever in Carbondale, CO look him up and visit his collaborative shop! We hear his photography may be hanging on the walls inside...

High Art w/Budtender-Hotel Expert-Artist Miles Gordon

High Art w/Budtender-Hotel Expert-Artist Miles Gordon

This week on the pod we speak with bud tender - artist - & hotel management specialist Miles Gordon Miles made the leap to the cannabis industry filled with a “whole lotta hope.” After nearly a decade into a career in hospitality and hotel management he realized that he wanted to make a BIG career shift (spliff?)... He left his big time job in management at a luxury hotel on the Las Vegas strip without a sure thing, just the hope & belief he’d make it in the newly legalized weed industry. It’s relatable listening to his journey of highs (OK, done with the puns...promise!) and inevitable lows...the time he decided to be a self sufficient artist during a pandemic felt especially resonate to our hosts... Miles describes the dance of whether to make your passion your profession or to leave it as a hobby and take on a career...who doesn’t dream of making the thing they love to do the thing that makes them big bucks? From art to hotels to cannabis to art back to cannabis Miles’ career story has been anything but basic. You can find Miles’ art at: chacochip.com @chacochip_art Or connect with him directly at: @chacochacochip Reach out with inquires about his amazing abstract paintings!

School Rules! w/School Teacher-Artist-Gardener Lyla Weinstein

School Rules! w/School Teacher-Artist-Gardener Lyla Weinstein

Lyla Weinstein is a kindergarten / first grade teacher who infuses her life with creativity and passion so that she can bring vibrancy, dimension and joy to the children in her class room. Her professional journey is rooted in teaching, but her wide array of interests also sustain her outside of the classroom.

Passionate about art, Lyla uses oil pastels, knitting and writing to keep her inspired both personally and professionally. A gardening hobby discovered by her neighbors is beginning to blossom into a part-time business. Although she’s been teaching since she was 18, young Lyla dreamed of being a scuba diving instructor.

As it has for so many, the pandemic has forced Lyla to question her professional path. It is possible that the effects of the pandemic have been most acutely felt in our classrooms. Teaching during 2020 (and sigh, 2021) has been a challenge, calling into question so much about the way we educate our young people.

We are grateful to Lyla for coming on the pod to share candidly the difficulties of teaching virtually as well as emanate her positivity. After speaking with Lyla we have decided that teachers are definitely multi-hyphenates and are (newly) big proponents of Zoom dance breaks!

Model Behavior w/ Degrassi’s Christina Schmidt

Model Behavior w/ Degrassi’s Christina Schmidt

Degrassi is a Canadian teen drama known for serving authentic and boundary-pushing realness and for giving the world Drake (yes, that Drake). TV's longest running TV series also gave us the incredible Christina Schmidt — an actress, turned body-positive model, turned influencer for fashion, wellness, & lifestyle. Schmidtt nearly broke the internet with her appearance in Drake's "I'm Upset" Degrassi reunion video. But, she isn't defined by her early success, far from it. We are joined by the Canadian model/actress/influencer to talk behind-the-scenes tea of model life, being an influencer during quarantine, and how our co-host Austin Mark slipped into her DM's, resulting in a lasting friendship. This week we talk about the balancing act that is being a multi-hyphenate. Framed through the lens of a career in the hospitality industry we discuss how self-care can be put on the back burner. Sometimes it takes big life moments (read: getting fired, a divorce, or a family illness) to force a renewed look at how you are taking care of yourself, not just your pocketbook. Entrepreneur, hospitality expert and writer Kate McKiernan brings her wisdom and perspective to the pod. Through insights from her past and present she speaks to how a career as a multi-hyphenate can be taxing, exciting and if nothing else winding. What is a Multi-Hyphenate??

What is a Multi-Hyphenate??

What is a multi-hyphenate anyway? We’re exploring how this buzz word jumped ship from Hollywood to apply to today’s multi-passionate entrepreneurs. Join cohosts Austin, Mallory and Katherine who share their wandering career stories, including what led them to start their own businesses, head into the nonprofit world, and how they pivoted when career paths hit a dead end. Whether you’re a sometimes yoga instructor, barista, Lyft driver or child care provider, we explore how multi-hyphenates have become the norm thanks in part to the rise gig economy and what it means to thrive (or not) in the modern workforce.
