World Traveler w/ Engineer-Environmentalist-Conservationist Brooke Segerberg
Co-hosts Katherine, Mallory and Austin follow the thread of her career that taught her how to create connections, find rare opportunities and know when to switch up the routine. We also talk about just because a career sounds great on paper, doesn’t mean you won’t experience highs and lows along the way.

Survival Jobs
Survival Jobs: Is it a a phrase from multi-hyphenate jargon, career pivot or even a problematic term? Culturally, young people have shifted from gaining work experience (and paying for cars, college or just supporting the family) to gaining the "right" kind of work experience. Even as the pandemic displaced so many workers, there are stigmas around what’s a “worthy” job and the "right" way a career should progress. According to backstage.com a “survival job is a job someone takes to pay the bills while pursuing a career they love.” Co-hosts Mallory, Austin and Katherine circle up to discuss a listener suggested topic (thanks Kristen!). We parse this definition and more by exploring the complexities, hang ups and privilege tied to the concept.

Midseason Mutihyphenate Catch Up: Where Are Your Hosts Now?
We’re back! After major moves (we’re almost bi-coastal?) and literal surgery (on the throat, no less) your three hosts gather for a quick and loose catch up to talk what’s new in their lives and chat about what’s to come in the second half of the inaugural season. Mallory, Austin and Katherine also share highlights from past episodes (spoiler alert: Austin and the rest are calling favorites between these digital creations) and what to look forward to in upcoming episodes with financial experts, cosmic bosses and HR powerhouses who share their insights to how to make it as a multihyphenate.
Dollhouse Therapy w/Set Designer-Miniaturist-Puppeteer Adam Koch
All of that came to an unexpected and swift halt when NYC/the world were "sleeping beauty-ed" (our new, better term for shutdown at the beginning of the pandemic). With his days no longer consumed by work, Adam was finally able to come "out of the closet" as a multi-hyphenate.
Since childhood, Adam has loved tiny spaces and during quarantine he has been able to build (we are talking from scratch-to-latch, people!) his own dollhouses. He runs a very successful miniature account @dollhousetherapy - where host Austin Mark first fell for this theater snack - which is simultaneously a love letter to tiny settings and a status report on his most recent creations.
Adam offers insights and wisdom! He keeps it real, making points to only later argue against himself (his wording), which we think is the magic of a wonderful, reflective and thoughtful conversation. Adam not only has the looks and the talent, he's got the smarts too. You're in for a treat!

Maker Manual w/Maker-Art Handler-Sustainable Skateboard Crafter Eric Angus
Eric opened our eyes to the maker universe and showed us how the term is certainly in conversation with multi-hyphenate. Eric makes sustainable skateboards, works with cement (have you ever seen a cement lake?), is on the install team at an art museum AND is starting his own collaborative studio (phew 😅)!
Identifying as a maker has certainly given Eric confidence to move from one hands-on frontier to the next...perhaps the same way your confidence can flourish once you’ve realized the strength being a multi-hyphenate offers.
It’s the professional through line that flows from gig to gig with Eric that so impressed our hosts. Eric not only seeks out work he can do with his hands, but also infuses each pursuit with purpose! Sustainable skateboards so your punk rock actions of “jammin’ with a city” can also be an emblem of the environmentalist movement: he sees skateboards as a tool (through their grinding and slamming) that can help tear down the concrete jungle and invite nature back in... He even sees purpose in his time spent at a ski shop tuning skis (even though he was a professional snowboarder!!)
By the end, we decided that the purpose Eric carries into his work is simultaneously very real and very much just his attitude. Why not listen and you be the judge?!
You can find Eric and what he makes at:

If ever in Carbondale, CO look him up and visit his collaborative shop! We hear his photography may be hanging on the walls inside...
High Art w/Budtender-Hotel Expert-Artist Miles Gordon
School Rules! w/School Teacher-Artist-Gardener Lyla Weinstein
Lyla Weinstein is a kindergarten / first grade teacher who infuses her life with creativity and passion so that she can bring vibrancy, dimension and joy to the children in her class room. Her professional journey is rooted in teaching, but her wide array of interests also sustain her outside of the classroom.
Passionate about art, Lyla uses oil pastels, knitting and writing to keep her inspired both personally and professionally. A gardening hobby discovered by her neighbors is beginning to blossom into a part-time business. Although she’s been teaching since she was 18, young Lyla dreamed of being a scuba diving instructor.
As it has for so many, the pandemic has forced Lyla to question her professional path. It is possible that the effects of the pandemic have been most acutely felt in our classrooms. Teaching during 2020 (and sigh, 2021) has been a challenge, calling into question so much about the way we educate our young people.
We are grateful to Lyla for coming on the pod to share candidly the difficulties of teaching virtually as well as emanate her positivity. After speaking with Lyla we have decided that teachers are definitely multi-hyphenates and are (newly) big proponents of Zoom dance breaks!

Not Buying Diamonds
Did you know minimum wage peaked in 1968 at $8.68 (adjusted for inflation)? Since it was last raised in 2009, it has lost about 10% of its purchasing power? That gig work has grown from 8% to 24% according to a recent survey — and for those polled is essential to meeting basic income? That in nine states, more than 4,000 Amazon employees are on food stamps? Welcome to the unluckiest generation. This week is all about why we're 'Shining Bright Like a Dimond,' but not buying any.
