An episode of Boyz Do Cry | mental health conversations

Avatar
By Ram Reyes, Paulina Rodriguez
Authentic and honest conversations about mental health. Hosted by two students Ram Reyes and Paulina Rodriguez-Ruiz, each week we talk about how we are feeling — how we are actually feeling — and try to make sense of the things going on in our heads. We invite guests — ranging from our personal friends or mental health professionals — to share their stories and talk about their experiences.

Working in Mental Health w/ Mitch and Ryan
Join us this episode as we share space and talk about with Mitch Collins, a program director for a program working with individuals with mental illness in that face the legal system, and Ryan Smith, in process to get his LCSW. Both have extensive experience in the mental health field and this episode of Boyz gives a lot of insight in the inner workings of the mental health system as a whole. We also talk about Mitch and Ryan's own individual journeys and how their path led them to what they do today. They show also how mental health workers deal with their own health and, at the end of the day, they're humans just like us but individuals that chose to hear out the pain of people that often go unspoken. Mitch and Ryan are also starting their own podcast called "Radical Minds" talking more about their experiences working in the mental health field. Spirituality w/ Justus and Steelo
Two artists, Justus and Steelo, join us today on the pod to talk a lot about their relationship with spirituality/religion, music and how that helps them with their mental health. While not all of you are probably religious or spiritual, I think their lived experience gives good insight in how other people use their spirituality to help them through their life and maybe you can give it a try yourself! The Highs & Lows of Bipolar Disorder w/ Chris
We talk this week with Paulina's longtime friend, Chris, about his experience with bipolar disorder. We get into the events leading up to his breakdown that eventually got him to go get help and get diagnosed. Bipolar disorder is one of the more misunderstood mental illnesses, usually pictured as an unhinged, moody person. Hopefully this episode illuminates some misunderstanding as we get into the symptoms, most notably mania/hypomania and the difference between Bipolar I and Bipolar II. Also, Ram finds out he might be Bipolar II lol. Depression Memes w/ Lexi
TW: Suicide, Suicide Ideation, Sexual Abuse If you're a millennial, you've probably seen depression memes and on some level relate to it. We discuss the joys and pitfalls of identifying too much with the memes. We talk about our first mental breakdowns and the thought process of suicide ideation from the suicidal person's perspective. It's not as heavy as it sounds. Well, not to Ram or Lexi. On the original EP 02 being deleted: We had to delete episode 02 as per the other party anonymously mentioned on the original episode. We decided to delete it out of respects to their wishes. We don't know if we can ever fully talk about it without the other parties' blessing but we felt the need to address it. We want to be as honest and upfront with our audience and we thought this was the best way to go about it. Thank you for understanding. Hope you enjoy this new episode!

Depression & Art w/ Crystal
Sometimes depression can lead to the creation of art. But will our creativity disappear if we try and treat our depression? Is our art rooted from depression? These are some of the questions we explore with artist Crystal (@GooeyStranger on Instagram) and as well as her experience/work with "Youth in Mind," a nonprofit organization in California helping youth impacted by the mental health system, a system we discuss needs rehauling.
