Sex, Laws and Audiotape

This podcast series is designed to support secondary school teachers who are tasked with delivering the brand new Sex and Relationships Education syllabus from September 2020 onwards, to schoolchildren aged 11 – 16. Postgraduate law student volunteers from BPP University's Pro Bono Centre provide information about what the law says about e.g. drug taking and Forced Marriage, to support teachers in designing engaging and relevant lesson plans as part of a broader curriculum exploring the emotional, social, financial, and health implications of various SRE topics.

Our presenters explain what characteristics (such as age and gender) are protected and the 4 main types of discrimination. Case studies are provided which can be used in the classroom to aid discussion. Our presenters will be providing ideas about activities you could use in the classroom to explore the topic of discrimination, and information about where a student can seek help if they have experienced discrimination.

The Legal Status of Marriage

The legal status of marriage now forms part of the SRE syllabus for 11 - 16 year olds. In this episode of Sex, Laws and Audiotapes we explain what marriage is, discussion reasons why people may choose to get married (or not), what makes a marriage ceremony legally valid, restrictions on who can get married and what happens when a couple no longer wish to be married. As usual, we will provide some suggested classroom activities to help you deliver this topic during lesson time.

Hate Crime

This week's episode focusses on the law relating to Hate Crime, particularly in relation to race, religion, sexual orientation and disability. It was recorded in late June 2021. The recent racist online abuse received by members of the England football team following the Euro 2021 final has highlighted the continuing need for hate crime to be tackled in this country. The presenters will provide a legal definition of hate crime, refer to case law examples and fictional scenarios that can be discussed in the classroom, and will signpost listeners to further sources of help including where hate crime can be reported.

Online Behaviour - when can I get in trouble with the civil law?

Civil cases usually involve a dispute between two parties where one party normally seeks financial compensation from another person or organisation because they believe they have been "wronged" by the other party. This episode examines some of the potential civil actions that can arise when someone posts something inappropriate online, such as a lie about another person. Specifically the laws of harassment and defamation are covered, including the legal test and defences and remedies available, plus the key distinction from criminal laws providing protection in these areas.
