If you're anything like me, finding ways to unwind before bedtime can often be a struggle. Sometimes it feels like thoughts from the day throw an after-party in our minds that lasts well into the night, hosting a marathon of racing thoughts, way out of our control. This anxiety gives no chance for a good night's rest, and its recurring visits definitely leave a dark cloud on our overall well-being.


For me, doodling has been the secret sanctuary, a tranquil escape to settle down, sift through lingering thoughts, and declutter my mind before felling asleep.

This meditative art practice is as flexible as you want it to be, whether you're up for a quick few minutes or a deep dive into an hour-long session crafting intricate line sketches—it's entirely up to you.

Meditative Art: Finding Calm with Line Art

Meditative art, specifically mindful line art is a powerful technique that leverages the benefits of both art and meditation to promote a sense of calm and well-being.

The rhythmic, repetitive nature of drawing, particularly when matched with the breath, helps to reduce stress, anxiety, and racing thoughts. The calming effect allows the parasympathetic nervous system to take over, bringing about a state of relaxation.

Mindful drawing also harmonizes the left and right brain hemispheres. The creative, artistic aspect of drawing stimulates the right brain, while the deliberate attention to detail and structure engages the left brain.

This type of meditative drawing helps you to be fully present in the moment, much like traditional meditation practices. It provides an escape from distractions of the outside world and promotes a profound sense of mindfulness. In this state of deep presence, you can experience a heightened connection to the here and now, bringing about a profound sense of inner peace and calmness.

I’ve expanded my meditation offerings here to include Meditative Art in 2 ways:


 First,  I’ll be posting episodes here of Meditative art practices.  These are simple practices anyone can follow along with.  I’ll include a set of journaling prompts to help you deepen your experience. Meditative Art is a powerful tool.  It taps into your creative self. It connects to the part of you buried deep down inside. The part of you thats been lost since childhood.  It helps to connect you to your inner knowing. The place that holds the answers. 

Second, I’ve just launched a collection of Meditative Art Kits at breathepeople.com.  These kits are soothing paint by number sets, that include guided meditations, nature soundscapes and journaling prompts. I wanted to create something that felt like one of my therapeutic art sessions in a box. Something you can do at home, on your own time in your own space. I’m really proud of these kits.  I’ll leave a link in show notes if you’d like to take a look. They make really thoughtful holiday gifts. 


What’s great about Meditative Art is that it isn’t about creating artwork. It’s about the process. There is no technique involved.  This is 100% self expression.  This is raw creativity and there is no judgement attached.
