Crossed Paths

Crossed Paths

By Brent Cayson

Having crossed paths with so many incredible and talented people who I call friends, this is my attempt to bring their stories to you. Spending years on the road with bands/artists, I've met many wonderful people doing killer things. While not every guest may be in a band, they all offer something to that world, or their local community, making an impact where they can.

# 7 Reed Murray (Say Anything, Tallhart, Carrollhood, Tiki Enthusiast, Investment Analyst)

# 7 Reed Murray (Say Anything, Tallhart, Carrollhood, Tiki Enthusiast, Investment Analyst)

Reed played in a band Tallhart, that I managed. We talk about the band growing and getting signed to Equal Vision, almost missing their biggest shows due to van trouble. The events that had to take place in order for him to meet Max Bemis (who helped Tallhard get signed) and later playing in Say Anything. He gives us a history lesson on Tiki and we talk about some of the killer tiki bars we've been to. It's the longest one but we covered a lot of great stories (many full circle moments) and share all the laughs.

#6 Will Noon (Straylight Run, Breaking Pangaea, fun.)

Will and I crossed paths on tour around 2009. He's such a solid dude. We talk about the bands he's played in, playing at the White House, his fun hobby to pass the time between tours. He also chats about Bitcoin. Was great to catch up with him. His new Project with Jared from the Honorary Title is called Mourners.

#5 Andrew Sprague (Tour Manager- Taking Back Sunday, Anberlin)

#5 Andrew Sprague (Tour Manager- Taking Back Sunday, Anberlin)

Andrew and I met in 2008, while both working for Anberlin. We share some nightmarish tour stories. One where we both were stuck at a Canadian border for 8 hours on account of ME. He talks about almost losing a band's passports the night before flying overseas for their biggest shows. He shares what it was like to be in the room when Taking Back Sunday took the stage and reunited with original members. He's a good buddy and I enjoyed this conversation.  *My recording is not as good as usual on account of me changing my set up, when I should have let it be.

#4 Jay Bakker (Pastor, Author, Speaker)

#4 Jay Bakker (Pastor, Author, Speaker)

Jay is the son of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker. I first met him 20 years ago in Atlanta, and worked with him at Revolution. We talk about some of the our old days, his struggles (and he's had a lot of those), what it's like to pastor a church while also questioning his faith and doubting, among many other topics. He's had a significant impact on me and I hope you enjoy hearing some of his journey.

#3 Aaron Gillespie (Underoath, The Almost)

#3 Aaron Gillespie (Underoath, The Almost)

Aaron is the drummer of Underoath and the singer/guitarist/songwriter of The Almost. He and I cover a multitude of things in this chat. Sleeping on strangers' floors, how in the world bands got to load-in on time without google maps or internet on phones back in the day. We talk about Nascar and him being friends with a few driver. Touching on his anxiety and how he's improved that, bettering his relationships with bandmates. Some nightmare tour stories we encountered on the Underoath European 2018 tour. It was an absolute blast to catch up with my buddy.

#1 Nate Young (Anberlin, co-owner King State)

For episode one, I talk to long time friend Nate Young.  Most of you may know him as the drummer of Anberlin. He also has a killer side project Carrollhood, that you should check out. He’s also co owner of King State, (coffee roaster and an incredible bar in Tampa). I spent almost 4 years on the road with him and Anberlin and it was some of the best times of my life. We talk about joining a band at 13, signing to the label he grew up listening to, busting ass to launch a company and roasting coffee in a garage. We also touch on Anberlin's breakup and reunion.
