Boys: Supporting Their Magic with Dr. Charlott Markey

Boys: Supporting Their Magic with Dr. Charlott Markey

I am back with the fantastic Dr. Charlott Markey to discuss her new book, "Being You The Body Image Book For Boys."

How can we support our young boys to navigate the complexities of the asks society puts on them?  To be strong, tough, unwavering, and yet soft, tender, and open.  In my conversations with boys and young men, they often express disdain as they feel like they have not lived up to these asks.  It leaves them with a sense of profound failure, and their unique magic drains from them and is replaced with bitterness.  How can we support our boy's magical and give them the tools to be the best version of themselves - the unique version that this world needs?

This book covers everything from food to mental health to body image in its powerful ten chapters.  If you have boys or you are working with boys, this is a podcast you don't want to miss.

In celebration of my new podcast with Charlott Markey, I am holding a giveaway of her new book, "Being You The Body Image Book For Boys." To win, all you need to do are follow these steps

The Magic of Storytelling with Caylin Gans

The Magic of Storytelling with Caylin Gans

Since the beginning, we have had stories

The act of telling stories is primal, ancient in scope, exciting, and a powerful method of connection. The magic of storytelling is what connects us and links us together - through it, we can share experiences with others. This heart link brings our audience closer to us. It brings them into the world of who we are and what this road of life has given us. It is a way of being transported from the present to a fantastical place abounding with "wildness" and a sense of being on the edge of something far larger than who we are.

Join me as we talk about storytelling with special guest Caylin Gans - my personal friend and someone who has earned the highest amount of respect from me. Caylin is a storyteller and the owner of Forest Schooled.

In this podcast, amongst other items, we visit topics such as

  1. What brought Caylin to stories, and how they have impacted her life
  2. Thoughts on the power of stories - why we tell them and the majestical aspect of them
  3. How to tell a story, should puppets be used, voices etc?
  4. Will Caylin tell us a story?? Listen to the end and find out.

Rough and Tumble Play: The ins and Outs with Frances Carlson

Rough and Tumble Play: The ins and Outs with Frances Carlson

STOP FIGHTING!!

I think this phrase is voiced so much that children have almost become deaf to it.

I have a question for you - are your children fighting, or are they participating in big body play?

I had the absolute privilege of speaking to Frances Carlson. Frances wrote Big Body Play: Why Boisterous, Vigorous, and Very Physical Play Is Essential to Children's Development and Learning. This is a podcast that I am deeply looking forward to sharing due to our rich conversation that spanned from social-emotional development all the way to consent.

Frances says the three main ways to know if the interactions between children are in the form of big body play or in the realm of fighting are

1. Are the children's faces upturned with smiles, or are they filled with tight lips and grimaces?

2. Can the child go in and out of the play? Or is there a sense of being trapped?

3. Does the child, if they leave, feel happy to return to the play?

Tune in and learn all the ins and outs of this fascinating topic that hits on all a child's growing developmental zones.

Battle Cries - The Creative Masculinity Series

Battle Cries - The Creative Masculinity Series

I have a simple rule that I follow in life, and that is if I am not willing to do it, then I have no place in asking others to do it. As I move with my whole heart into men's work, I am asking for men to open their hearts - a scary thing to do if you were told that side of you should not be spoken, shared, or expressed. And so, with Doug Strudwick, we lead the way in being openly vulnerable about being masculine.

In this series, you will hear different men speak about what masculinity means to them. In this podcast with Doug, we covered topics such as,

The state of masculinity from both the child perspective and the adult perspective

Have you felt supported by other men, and what did it look like?

What does vulnerability mean?

How can you support men and boys in your life?

How do you define being a successful male

and much more

*The audio is fuzzy until the 2:20 mark.

Children and Inclusivity with Sarah Boggett

Children and Inclusivity with Sarah Boggett

"I am cherished."

One of my deepest desires is that all people can feel a sense of being cherished, especially children. I think we can universally agree that being cherished is a core nutrient for the healthy development of self and our relation to others.

This podcast is all about the acceptance of your child, so they feel cherished. It is about creating the space to honor your child as they are showing up at the moment. It is about how we, as parents, educators, and mentors, can show up for these little beings as they are trying to figure out who they are and what feels comfortable.

Moving Your child Through Fear and Anxiety with Dr James J. Crist

Are your children afraid and anxious? Do these words apply to you as well?

It is no surprise that since the start of Covid, the baseline of anxiety that children hold has increased. The uncertainty of school, the potential of getting sick, not seeing friends or family, feeling isolated, along with other impacts of social media - children are holding a lot. In this interview with Dr. Crist, we explore his book - What to do when you're scared and worried, a guide for kids. Listen in for a whole host of valuable and essential anxiety and fear-reducing tips that not only work for children but can be applied to yourself as well.

Teens and the Menstrual Superpower

Teens and the Menstrual Superpower

Your daughter walks down the stairs, pulls you aside, and says quietly.

"I got my period, and I don't know what to do."

For parents, the idea of their child moving into adulthood can be a hard transition.  For many, menstruation signifies pain, frustration, and mood fluctuations.  How do we as parents approach this vulnerable time with open hearts and acceptance?  Menstruation can mark the beginning of a beautiful transition worthy of celebration.  Did you know that each phase of the menstrual cycle bestows unique superpowers to a woman? Speaking openly and candidly about menstruation is gaining traction in society, but it can't come fast enough.

This week on the Deeply Rooted Parent Podcast, listen to my exciting and informational discussion with Melanie Sutherland, a pelvic physiotherapist (https://bodycotoronto.com/), and naturopathic doctor Dr. Erin Tewinkel (https://drtewinkelnd.com/).  We explore topics such as:

1. What are some signs that teens might be getting ready to experience their first period?

2. What does a standard teen period look like, and what can they expect?

3. What are the products or suggestions we might have for a period preparedness kit?

4. What healthy habits can minimize menstrual symptoms or PMS?

5. How can we change the narrative around menstruation to help teens realize that their cycle can be a superpower instead of an inconvenience or burden?

6. What can we as men do to support a healthy and mature menstruation dialogue within society. It is time for women not to be alone within their body advocacy.

****If their incredible knowledge sparked an ember in you to learn more about how you can support your children, then see below because Melanie and Erin have created the Teen Collective - a fun support group that my 11-year-old step-daughter enjoyed. ****

The Teen Collective is a Monthly Membership With a Mission to

*Build Community amongst brave and curious girls eager to challenge the status quo

*Create a safe space where no question is silly, and no discussion is off the table

*Champion tomorrow's leaders willing to challenge what it means to be a healthy teen and lead by example

*Ignite spark and foster confidence, so girls feel comfortable and courageous in making the best decisions for their mind and body
