54. Rewind to "Long-term Leadership: How to Lead Like its Your Last Chance"

Taking this episode to hit the rewind button and head back to episode 21. Long-term Leadership: How to Lead Like it's Your Last Change. It was a favorite, so why not?

This episode comes out right after Memorial Day when we honor and remember the men and women who have died in service to our country. It is a  fitting reminder that life is fleeting and each day is a precious gift.  Believe it or not: This could be one of the most important ties into  leadership and your ability to influence others.

How to lead others like it's your last chance and opportunity to do so:

1. Show people that you appreciate them. Tell them that you love and care about them today.

2. Stop comparing your life to other lives; Your leadership journey  to other journeys. Life is too short to let comparison steal your  valuable time, so don't let it distract you from what breakthroughs are  waiting for you just around the corner.

3. Focus on what is actually important and fulfilling in the long run.

4. Take more risks in your leadership, in getting out of your comfort  zone, and in doing the things that will make a difference in the lives  of others and in your progress towards your goals.

5. (the Sparknotes version of the episode) Think of yourself less. At  the end of our ropes, we will not regret the time we spent pouring into  and encouraging others, so let's not waste it all on ourselves.

Follow me @bestyoucanb as you step into your potential and grow into the leader you were born to be!

19. Grit and Grace: Why You Need the Perfect Balance Between Hard Work and Forgiveness

19. Grit and Grace: Why You Need the Perfect Balance Between Hard Work and Forgiveness

Our society right now is in a bad habit of praising the final product, but not the countless hours of labor that led to it. We’re also experiencing this focus on so much self-care that it isn’t even leaving any time leftover for consistent diligence. This can get a little bit confusing for those of us who are trying to work hard to achieve our goals, but also trying to make sure we avoid burnout!

So how do we strike the perfect balance between grit and grace?

Listen to learn more :)

Grit is nothing more than a good habit of demanding excellence and effort from yourself, which is why throwing in the towel and quitting on your consistency every Friday through Sunday is just ruining the progress that you make during the week. Grace, on the other hand, is knowing when to recognize the signs your body gives you to let you know you need a break before you keep going.

14. Take Control of Your Comfort Zone and Break Free From its Limitations

Let’s dive right into why we want to get out of comfort zone, what is on the other side of breaking free from its limitations, and how this will effect who you are and how you show up as a leader! I believe there is untapped potential waiting on the other side of just a few brave steps outside of our idea of what is comfortable. And the best news? Our comfort zone can be exercised and grow just like a muscle if we start with one step at a time.

13. Don't Feel Listened To? How to Still Lead in Life and Stay Confident

13. Don't Feel Listened To? How to Still Lead in Life and Stay Confident

This question comes up a lot: “But how do I lead if no one follows me? How do I lead if no one listens?”

The good news is that you can lead when you don't feel like anyone listens to you, but the bad news is that it isn't always easy! A few takeaways:

  • Remember your priorities
  • Try to understand where the person who won't listen to you is coming from
  • Be filled with competence and character, and consistently demonstrate that over time
  • Be patient and remember that respect is always earned, never forcefully taken by you, and always willingly given to you.

11. Hindsight is 2020: Stories of Leadership from the Past Year

2020 was crazy, but let's not overlook the many stories of amazing leadership exemplified in everything from taking initiative in acts of extreme generosity to giving time and lending belief to the man who became the first person with down syndrome ever to finish an ironman. My jaw dropped initially reading about some of these incredible people and the waves they created this past year, so I hope yours does too! This is a "feel good" episode with stories back-to-back that are sure to put a smile on your face!

10. Fitting In

10. Fitting In

In todays episode, we cover why it's normal to want to fit in and belong, some of the reasons why we tend to feel this way, and ideas of ways around this issue of never feeling like we fit in. No matter how old we are, we all crave relationships, friendships, and connection with others, but can be met with feelings of hurt and rejection instead.

Some reasons why we might feel like we don't fit in:

  • We can feel like we don’t belong as a result of things we cannot change, like physical characteristics or our appearance, but there are so many other (more meaningful!) ways we can connect with others.
  • Having beliefs that are different from those around you can make it hard to participate in conversations, but there are ways around this as well.
  • If we feel like we don’t belong just because our goals are really different from the ones our friends have, the answer is this: We can either keep our goals, have aspirations, and be ambitious, or we can change to fit the mold. That is 100% our choice.
  • When we find ourselves growing in different ways or at a faster pace than our friends, we might not be interested in the same things anymore, but a little bit of patience will go along way here!
  • With a little reflection, we might find that we aren't as inquisitive about others as we might think, and this can make it really hard for our friends to want to include us. So, next time you have the chance, ask your friends how they are doing and genuinely show interest!
  • Like the last reason, maybe we don't listen as well as we should, so try to be a little more open to your friend next time the two of you chat.
  • Making friends is hard and requires effort and patience, so don't give up if it just hasn't worked yet!

7. Emotional Leadership & Why You Need It

7. Emotional Leadership & Why You Need It

Emotional leadership is an approach to leading that will put you head and shoulders above others in no time. That doesn't mean it is easy to cultivate, but it definitely helps to understand the building blocks that make it so unique.

Read more about the research that motivated this podcast episode here.

Basically everyone you come in contact with — doesn’t matter when or where or if you’re interacting with the most confident person that you know — everyone has a sign on their head that says “make me feel important, try to understand me, I want to be heard, seen, valued."

Or, as my husband likes to think about all this, everyone wants you to put a 10 on their forehead!

and this approach to interacting is, in a nutshell, what emotional leadership is all about, but there’s also much much more to it than that!

The four parts of emotional leadership are:

  1. Self awareness
  2. Self management
  3. Social awareness
  4. Relationship management

What are they and how can you work on them in your own leadership? Listen to learn more!
