Ep. 584: Wait... Is #EveryDayDylan BACK?!?! DC3 Lifts Cardinals Over Rockies!

Ep. 584: Wait... Is #EveryDayDylan BACK?!?! DC3 Lifts Cardinals Over Rockies!

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals 8-5 win over the Rockies from Friday, June 7, 2024 as Dylan Carlson emerges as a hero of the game, producing his first three RBIs of the season.

DC3 provided the game-tying swing in the sixth after Lance Lynn had coughed up an early 4-0 Cardinals lead on a little league grand slam... Whoops.

But the Cardinals kept battling and had a key eighth inning that saw Oli Marmol make a gutsy decision to pull Nolan Gorman for a pinch runner... And it paid off in a major way.

With Carlson chipping in a 2-RBI double at that point to solidify the game for Ryan Helsley in the ninth, is the monkey off DC's back? Can he become a more prominent contributor for the Cardinals moving forward?

All that and more on Ep. 584 of B-Schaeff Daily!

Ep. 583: "I pitched like s---." Sonny Gray at a loss to describe his fifth-inning collapse as Cardinals drop the opener to Rockies

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals 3-2 loss to the Rockies from Thursday, June 6, 2024 at Busch Stadium.

Sonny Gray came apart at the seams in the fifth inning as he walked three batters with two wild pitches and a pair of stolen bases allowed. He was candid with his frustration after the game, but didn't offer a ton in the way of an explanation for why things went so wrong.

You'll hear from the Cards starter in this episode, and we'll talk through his outing as well as the struggles for his catcher Ivan Herrera in helping to limit the damage in that frustrating fifth inning. Herrera's management of the running game is becoming a glaring issue for St. Louis.

And of course, so is their un-timely offense as Thursday was another night where RISP was a real issue.

After 4-5 Road Trip, Cardinals MUST Dominate Easier Upcoming Schedule

After 4-5 Road Trip, Cardinals MUST Dominate Easier Upcoming Schedule

Andy and Brenden of the KTGR Big Show discuss the Cardinals' win over the Astros from Wednesday and take stock of the road trip at large as the Redbirds finished up with a 4-5 record in their trip to Cincy, Philly and Houston.

Are you satisfied by the result of the road trip? Or is it a merely "tolerable" result for the Cardinals as they seem to have weathered the storm of a difficult portion of the schedule.

Now, things are about to lighten up with some lesser teams on the docket in the days ahead. Can the Cardinals take advantage and make their move in June?

Plus, the White Sox have some interesting names potentially on the trade block. Would the Cardinals trade marquee prospects like Tink Hence or even Jordan Walker to swing a blockbuster with Chicago? SHOULD they even be willing to consider such a thing or is it a matter of blasphemy?

Ep. 582: Mikolas Exits After 62 Pitches -- And It Seemed To Be The Right, Aggressive Call In A Cardinals Win

Brenden Schaeffer discusses Wednesday's 4-2 win for the Cardinals over the Astros as Miles Mikolas earned the W for his six strong innings of two-run baseball.

It was a bit of a quirk to see Mikolas pulled from the game after only 62 pitches, but Oli Marmol explained why it was about factors other than pitch count that led to him determining that it was the right time to turn to his bullpen at that point.

And, of course, the Triumvirate came through with JoJo, Kit and Hels Bells finishing the job. And newsflash, Helsley looked back-back when it comes to that fastball velo and location. He seemed to trust the command of the pitch again which is bad news for NL hitters.

Plus, some good fundies and small ball by the Cardinals helped to establish a lead in this one. And Nolan Arenado found the Crawford boxes before he left H-Town.

Ep. 581: So... The Cardinals’ Fifth Starter Question Is Still A Thing

Ep. 581: So... The Cardinals’ Fifth Starter Question Is Still A Thing

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals 8-5 loss to the Astros on Tuesday night, June 4, 2024.

Andre Pallante turned into a pumpkin one start after his brilliant game against the Reds. This one wasn't very sharp as he allowed six earned runs in three innings of work while giving away far too many freebies to the Houston lineup.

Does Pallante's rough night shed further spotlight on the reality that the Cardinals need to take action with this fifth rotation spot? It certainly reminds us of Mozeliak's failed gamble on the 'We hope our five (starters) can go' strategy of just hoping the penciled-in top five wouldn't miss any time due to injury this year.

The Cardinals are also dealing with other issues that we break down in this episode, including the general problem with fundamentals for this team right now, Arenado's overall struggles, and Donovan taking one of the worst at-bats we've seen from anyone all season.

Ep. 580: Examining Oli Marmol’s Bullpen Moves After The Cardinals' Late-Inning Collapse In Houston

Ep. 580: Examining Oli Marmol’s Bullpen Moves After The Cardinals' Late-Inning Collapse In Houston

Brenden Schaeffer dives into the process for Oli Marmol as he attempted to navigate several landmines in the Cardinals' loss to the Astros on Monday, June 3, 2024.

In Ep. 580 of B-Schaeff Daily, we examine the various turning points of the game as the snowball began matriculating down the hill at full speed on a potential troublesome night for the bullpen when Kyle Gibson was unable to work his way through the sixth inning. From that moment on, Oli Marmol had game-changing decisions on his plate.

Most of them worked out, but when JoJo Romero gave up the lead in the eighth, we are forced to reckon with whether he was the best option for that point in the game--and even if he was, how earlier events ultimately caused a depreciation to his effectiveness in that spot. Plenty of fascinating matchup data and decision-making to discuss!

Ep. 579: Cardinals Get One In Philly — And Move Into A Wild Card Spot?!

Ep. 579: Cardinals Get One In Philly — And Move Into A Wild Card Spot?!

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals 5-4 win in 10 innings against the Phillies on Sunday Night Baseball, June 2, 2024.

In Ep. 579 of B-Schaeff Daily, we discuss the errors and lack of timely hitting that could have come back to haunt the Cardinals on Sunday, but it was their ability to come through when it mattered most that made the difference.

Nolan Gorman is really coming around recently, and had another big game Sunday. Alec Burleson continues to display a nice power stroke. And several contributors from the bullpen were absolutely nails for St. Louis -- Matthew Liberatore and Ryan Helsley in particular.

The Cardinals now sit in a playoff spot, just a shade ahead of the Cubs and Giants for the third wild card spot in the NL.

Though it's far too early to be caring about such things earnestly, it's certainly a nice sign for a Redbirds team that was so down and out just a few weeks ago.

Ep. 578: Are the Cardinals sliding back again — Or are the Phillies just that good?

Ep. 578: Are the Cardinals sliding back again — Or are the Phillies just that good?

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals 6-1 loss to the Phillies on Saturday, June 1, 2024.

Now that the Cardinals have lost consecutive times to Philly, are you concerned the team is backsliding after it worked so hard to get back to .500 earlier in the week? Or is this series more about the greatness of this Phillies team than it is the shortcomings of the Cardinals, in which case you're not nearly as worried about these results going against St. Louis right now?

In this episode of B-Schaeff Daily, Brenden dives into Sonny Gray's outing and another quiet night for the offense despite facing what essentially amounted to a bullpen game after an injury to Philadelphia's starter knocked him from the game early.

Nolan Arenado's defensive struggles can be quantified by the metrics in a way that is pretty jarring to realize considering his pedigree. We explain the stat that has Arenado ranked last among MLB third basemen in 2024.

And Jordan Walker got on the board with his first homer of the year Saturday in Memphis!

Ep. 577: Winn's Hit Streak Ends After Pinch-Hitting For Crawford (Who Hit His First HR As A Cardinal!)

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals 4-2 loss to the Phillies on Friday, May 31, 2024 in Philadelphia.

Masyn Winn's 18-game hitting streak ended despite the fact that he didn't start in the game for St. Louis. A failed pinch-hit endeavor did him in. Should Oli Marmol have put him in that spot? Should Brandon Crawford have started to begin with?

Crawford was actually the Cardinals' best hitter in the game, knocking his first homer as a Redbird. So we'll dive into those angles as well as the outing for Mikolas, Dylan Carlson's defense and how Matthew Liberatore looked back in a bullpen role (spoiler: really good).

Ep 576: Lars Nootbaar Hits The Injured List; Can The Cardinals Keep Things Rolling Without Him?

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the news of Lars Nootbaar hitting the injured list on Friday, May 31, 2024 in the latest episode of B-Schaeff Daily.

The Cardinals turned their season around in conjunction with Nootbaar finding his rhyhthm. He was a huge catalyst for the run that has brought the Cards back to .500. Without him, can the Cardinals sustain this recent success?

Is there reason to be concerned long-term about Nootbaar's injury history? It's another one to add to the list as he strains his oblique on a check swing. Plus, why not Jordan Walker taking Noot's spot on the roster?

Ep. 575: CARDINALS ARE .500! Did Pallante Just Become The Answer? Plus, DEFCON Levels On Noot Injury, Helsley Struggles

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals 5-3 win over the Reds from Wednesday, May 29, 2024 as the Redbirds finally chased down that long-elusive .500 record thanks to a strong performance from Andre Pallante.

Did you see this coming from Pallante? And is there reason to believe he can keep it up moving forward to become the answer to the Cardinals' longstanding question over the five spot in their rotation?

Masyn Winn has an 18-game hitting streak. That's good.

Lars Nootbaar has a potential injury. Ryan Helsley gave up a run for his third straight appearance. Those things are bad. We give our DEFCON concern levels for those situations as well as for the Keynan Middleton setback.

Ep. 574: Nado, Bang! Arenado Finds Power Stroke, Gibby Deals, Cardinals Win!

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals 7-1 win over the Reds on Tuesday, May 28, 2024 as Nolan Arenado finds the power swing he has been so desperately seeking. Nolan Gorman goes yard after an ill-fated bunt try. And Kyle Gibson deals by bringing a no-hit bid into the sixth inning.

He wasn't the only pitcher in the Cardinals organization to flirt with a no-no Tuesday, either. We discuss that while also prepping expectations for Andre Pallante's start on Wednesday afternoon as the Cardinals have officially named him for the opportunity as the next-man-up to be the number five starter in the rotation.

Ep. 573: 'My Swing Is Not Good' Arenado Still Searching At The Plate

Brenden Schaeffer discusses Monday's loss for the Cardinals as the recent winning streak was snapped in a 3-1 defeat against the Cincinnati Reds.

After a Sunday hiatus on the pod, Brenden is sure to dip into some of the conversation topics from over the weekend as the Cardinals handled the Cubs in impressive fashion, but what do we make of Arenado's struggles reaching new levels amid the Cardinals' quiet day at the plate on Monday?

Plus, defensive miscues by Arenado and Goldschmidt ended up costing Lance Lynn in an otherwise quality outing by the veteran starter.

Plenty of conversation about Lars Nootbaar's amazing catch, injured and minor-league Cardinals nearing their returns, the state of various hitters in the lineup either trending up or down.

Ep. 569: Cardinals Beat O's In What Is Henceforth Known As 'The Michael Siani Game'

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals 6-3 win over the Orioles on Monday, May 20, 2024 at Busch Stadium.

'The Michael Siani Game', as future generations will come to know of it, was a spectacle for the St. Louis outfielder who launched his first ever big-league home run and compiled four RBIs on the night.

Sonny Gray had a no hitter going through five, but ended up asking for Oli Marmol to pull him from the start before completing the top of the sixth. Plenty of context explaining that decision and the other moves made by the Cardinals manager.

If you ask me, Oli had an impeccable night of managing this bullpen and the St. Louis pitching staff.

Brenden Schaeffer discusses comments by Marlins manager Skip Schumaker after Sixto Sanchez had another rough first inning that the Miami club was unable to overcome over the weekend. A hit batter and wild pitch followed by multiple walks and hits put the Marlins in a bind that they weren't able to overcome against the Mets. Schumaker pulled no punches saying that what the club has been getting from Sanchez has been unacceptable. Ep. 568: The Latest Chapter In The Cardinals' Mismanagement Of Matthew Liberatore

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals 11-3 loss to the Red Sox from Sunday, May 19, 2024 at Busch Stadium.

In Ep. 568 of B-Schaeff Daily, we dive into the Cardinals' handling of Matthew Liberatore this season as he began the year thriving in a bullpen role but has been tasked with a return to the rotation on the fly.

What does it say about the Cardinals' drafting and development of pitchers if their best option for filling in for the rotation is a player that they had already assigned to a bullpen role? Is Liberatore going to be miscast by the Cardinals as a "failed starter" in the same way that Jordan Hicks was? Because he's looking like a pretty successful starter over with the Giants this year... Simply put, this falls on the Cardinals front office.

We also discuss the frequent off-days for players like Masyn Winn and how (and perhaps why) they have coincided with Sunday games in which the Cardinals have mightily struggled this year.

Ep. 567: Don't Let The Cardinals Get Hot!

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' 7-2 win over the Red Sox on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at Busch Stadium.

The Cardinals have continued to swing the bats well recently, racking up a ton of hits as every player in the lineup came up with at least one base knock on Saturday.

But most importantly, they came through with a clutch late rally in order to seal the deal and set up another sweep chance for Sunday afternoon at Busch.

Ep. 566: ‘That's What It’s Supposed To Look Like’ Cardinals Mash Four Bombs, Score in 7 of 8 innings to beat Boston

In Ep. 566 of B-Schaeff Daily, Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' 10-6 win over the Boston Red Sox from Friday, May 17, 2024 at Busch Stadium.

The offense was the star of the show Friday as the Cardinals mashed four home runs in the win, including Masyn Winn's first of the year and a key blast by a slumping Nolan Gorman to perhaps help him toward a turnaround.

The Cardinals scored in seven out of their eight innings offensively and banished the RISP monkey from their backs for a night.

Kyle Gibson pitched well enough and deep enough into the game to secure the win for St. Louis, but we'll get into the sustainability of a rotation that is teetering toward the bottom five of MLB in ERA.

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the recent comments made by Cardinals team president Bill DeWitt III on 'The Kilcoyne Conversation' podcast with Martin Kilcoyne (hosted by the Scoops Sports Network).

DeWitt referred to the notion of Cardinals fans deciding not to show up to games anymore in order to send a message to ownership regarding the fans' displeasure with the state of the club as an "illogical" line of thought.

In doing so, DeWitt demonstrated a fundamental misunderstanding of what a team's relationship to its fans should be.

Ep. 564: Cardinals Whiff On Another Sweep Chance As Lynn Struggles Again

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the letdown by the Cardinals on Wednesday, May 15, 2024 as the opportunity to cement a sweep once again evaded St. Louis in a non-competitive 7-2 loss to the Angels.

Instead of keeping up the momentum and securing a winning road trip, the Cardinals reverted back to their struggles with RISP and saw a further deterioration to their standing in the pitching staff and in particular, the starting rotation numbers.

Where the Cardinals stand statistically in these categories makes it clear why they are currently seven games below a .500 record. How should fans feel about the current state of things for the Redbirds? We'll try and dissect as many of the relevant topics as possible here in this episode.

Ep. 563 of B-Schaeff Daily delves into big moments offensively by Pedro Pages and Alec Burleson as the offense for St. Louis posted its fourth straight game with a double-digit hit total.

We get into the outing from Sonny Gray as the Cardinal ace left a few too many pitches over the heart of the plate, which set up a thrilling final few frames as a result of the closely contested score.

Ron Washington bailed out JoJo Romero in a major way in the eighth inning and Cowboy JoJo made sure not to waste the gift.

Cardinals have won three in a row and will look to go for the jugular on Wednesday -- Can they get their first sweep of 2024?

Eo. 561: Do Mozeliak's Comments Sunday Signal Trouble For The Cardinals Manager?

Brenden Schaeffer returns from his weekend hiatus at a wedding in NJ for a new B-Schaeff Daily discussing the weekend that was in Milwaukee but focusing heavily on the scrutiny and scuttlebutt that suggested the Cardinals could be close to making a move at manager.

Mozeliak spoke to KMOX on Sunday morning, adding some fuel to the fire.

Are the Cardinals close to firing Oli Marmol? Did the win Sunday potentially calm the waters on that front? And a better question -- Should Mozeliak really be allowed to execute another managerial firing in the first place? He built the roster, after all.

Ep. 560: A Prominent MLB Podcast Asked — Will The Cardinals Trade Nolan Arenado?

Brenden Schaeffer discusses a recent suggestion by the Talkin' Baseball podcast that the Cardinals could trade Nolan Arenado to a contender. If this season goes off the rails for St. Louis, would now be a sensible time to consider a drastic move like that for the Cardinals?

It may only be plausible under a certain set of circumstances, but we'll revisit the notion for Ep. 560 of B-Schaeff Daily given that the topic is getting some play from a prominent national podcast.

Ep. 559: Cardinals Lose Contreras For 6-8 Weeks; Can This Team Survive Without Him?

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' most brutal night of the season as Willson Contreras breaks his arm on a JD Martinez swing. It's the fractured left forearm that he suffered in Tuesday's loss to the Mets on Tuesday, May 7, 2024. Is this injury going to be too much for an already scuffling Cardinals team to overcome? And what the heck do you do about the struggles for Paul Goldschmidt at this point? Miles Mikolas, too, while we're at it. Follow this feed if you enjoy Cardinals content all season!

Ep. 558: Oli Marmol Urges For More Competitive At-Bats From Cardinals Monday

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' 4-3 loss to the Mets on Monday, May 6, 2024 at Busch Stadium.

Oli Marmol said the at-bats early in the loss weren't competitive enough from the Cardinals hitters and we get into exactly what he meant by that. The candid presser from the postgame gets a lot of consideration in this episode as we attempt to ascertain where the team goes from here.

Kyle Gibson pitched well again for the Cardinals but spent a lot of his postgame comments discussing his belief in an offense that is destined to turn things around. He also hears how his comments might sound to a disgruntled fan base and addresses it in a self-aware conversation.

Ep. 557: Do The Cardinals Need A Drastic Shakeup?

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals 5-1 loss to the White Sox on Sunday, May 5, 2024 at Busch Stadium. Despite the majority of the pitching staff performing capably Sunday, the offense went silent yet again to ensure a series loss to the worst team in baseball. Does an embarrassment like this weekend inspire a drastic move from the Cardinals--either in terms or roster management or a potential coaching change? Or both? We discuss the factors as well as get into what in the world the team is supposed to do with Giovanny Gallegos at this point. Because his ERA is 12.00. Ep. 555: Sonny Gray Takes Off His Clothes In The Middle Of His Start (And It Was A Good Thing!)

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals 3-0 win over the White Sox on Friday, May 3, 2024 at Busch Stadium.

Sonny Gray shoved again. He also took off all his clothes in the middle of the game -- don't worry, he was in the clubhouse for that part.

How Sonny felt that moment helped him to reset mentally, plus the *colorful* language Willson Contreras used to described Gray and the way he consistently goes about his business.

(Yes, Willson does say a naughty word in the audio we're going to play and that's why I tagged this episode with an explicit warning in cased anybody prefers not to hear such content)

More on Contreras, Arenado, Gray and how Burleson contributed to the proceedings as the DH without getting a single hit or getting on base once.

Ep. 553: The Cardinals Are Allergic To Scoring Runs Right Now

Ep. 553: The Cardinals Are Allergic To Scoring Runs Right Now

In Ep. 553 of B-Schaeff Daily, Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' 4-1 loss to the Tigers on Wednesday, May 1, 2024.

The Cardinals have to figure this thing out offensively. Something's got to give, as the team has now scored three or fewer runs in 19 of their 31 games.

It's the complete opposite trend of the type of team they needed to be at the plate in order to accommodate a starting rotation that was designed to log innings while admittedly giving up a few runs per game.

St. Louis ranks in the bottom five of every relevant offensive category. What gives? Is it on the players? The coaches? Some combination of the two? What can bring this group of hitters, which seems capable on paper, out of the shadows and into a more robust and productive lineup?

Ep. 552: Cardinals Doubleheader Breakdown: Gibby Vs. Flaherty + Major Questions About Matz, Gallegos & Crawford

Ep. 552: Cardinals Doubleheader Breakdown: Gibby Vs. Flaherty + Major Questions About Matz, Gallegos & Crawford

Brenden Schaeffer breaks down the Cardinals doubleheader split against the Tigers in Detroit on April 30, 2024.

Game 1 featured a great pitchers' duel between former Cardinal Jack Flaherty and Kyle Gibson, who traversed seven innings to continue his streak of innings hoarding. His ERA is now below 4.00 as Gibby has been just what the doctor ordered for this rotation.

Flaherty, of course, shoved the Cardinals into oblivion while setting a new career high in strikeouts. Fortunately, though, the Redbirds handled another former Cardinal pitcher in order to steal Game 1 away from the Tigers late.

Game 2, though, didn't go the Cardinals' way. We talk major questions about Steven Matz, Giovanny Gallegos and Brandon Crawford after that unfortunate outing for St. Louis.
