Ep. 795: Is Pallante's rotation spot in jeopardy after Tuesday's Cardinals loss?

Andre Pallante unraveled in Tuesday's loss for the St. Louis Cardinals as the Royals got the better of the Redbirds in the renewal of the I-70 series at Busch.

Is Pallante in danger of losing his rotation spot after his ERA increased to nearly 5.00 in Tuesday's rough outing? Michael McGreevy could be on the way soon, but not necessarily in Pallante's stead.

Ep. 794: Four Runs All Weekend... What Happened To The Hitters? And We've Gotta Talk About Fedde...

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the St. Louis Cardinals 8-1 loss to the Rangers from Sunday. We've got to talk about Erick Fedde, as the right-hander wasn't bad by any stretch of the imagination on Sunday, but there were just several elements of his game that made it a little less palatable to watch. His inability to hold runners was noticeable Sunday, at the least, and the season-long trend of walking batters popped up again.

Still, he had the Cardinals in position to mount another rally after holding serve against ace Jacob deGrom. But when Oli Marmol decided to go for the gusto with offensive substitutions in the 7th, it did not pay off into runs being scored--and it also left the defense somewhat vulnerable.

Brenden gives his take on the offense scoring only 4 runs all series -- long-term concern or just one of those instances of running into a tough pitching staff?

Ep. 793: Sonny Gray was OUTSTANDING for the Cardinals on Saturday!

Ep. 793: Sonny Gray was OUTSTANDING for the Cardinals on Saturday!

Sonny Gray was dominant for the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday, holding the Texas Rangers to a measly four hits and a goose egg in the runs column across seven stellar innings. Gray racked up 10 strikeouts for the second time over his last three starts.

Phil Maton and Ryan Helsley shut the door out of the Cardinal bullpen on a day where the Cardinals shut out the Rangers in a 2-0 win.

The Cards got their scoring early on an Arenado sac fly and an RBI double by Willson Contreras.

We also discuss the roster moves from Saturday that included Jordan Walker hitting the IL.

Plus, down on the farm, the Springfield Cardinals shelled Royals star Cole Ragans during his rehab assignment! You don’t see that everyday!

Ep. 792: Cardinals Promote Rising OF Prospect! Could McGreevy Fit Into June Rotation Plans?

The St. Louis Cardinals promoted rising outfield prospect Joshua Baez from High-A Peoria to Double-AA Springfield this week after the 21-year-old former 2nd round draft pick (2021) showed everything the organization needed to see from him at A-ball.

We discuss Baez’s promotion in the context of the crop of other outfield prospects that the Cards have working their way through the system.

Plus, is there a case to be made that Michael McGreevy will be up with the big-league team sooner rather than later? A look at the June schedule may be all it takes to compel the Cardinals to give him a call.

Ep. 791: The Cardinals Just Don't Quit. Another Comeback Win Secures A Series W In Baltimore!

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4 win over the Orioles on Wednesday night in Baltimore as the Cardinals came from behind for a second night in a row, battling through the rain drops to claim a series victory on the road!

Masyn Winn and Brendan Donovan came up with big games offensively but not until after Jordan Walker truly set the tone for the comeback effort with a clutch swing to ensure the Cardinals had something to build upon as they scrapped back from an early deficit.

The trade deadline rhetoric has completely shifted from what we expected it would be, right? Tons of good listener questions in this episode!

Ep. 790: Cardinals Come Back In Baltimore! Big Swings, Big Win!

Ep. 790: Cardinals Come Back In Baltimore! Big Swings, Big Win!

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the St. Louis Cardinals coming from behind to win over the Orioles on Tuesday night in Baltimore.

Lars Nootbaar put together a big day including a home run to help push the Cards out to a lead, and Andre Pallante was rolling along to maintain it -- until he wasn't.

A 3-run homer for Baltimore meant the Cardinals had to find a way to come from behind. Nolan Gorman was tasked with a key spot against a lefty in the sixth inning, but was unable to tie the game, somewhat predictably. Brenden explains why Oli Marmol was anything but blind to that moment -- we have to see the bigger picture in 2025.

Rest assured, later swings by Masyn Winn and Nolan Arenado put the Cardinals back ahead. And then lo and behold, we saw the 'runway' crew Gorman and Jordan Walker go back-to-back triples to help pad the newly-found lead.

A lot to like about this one from the Cardinals perspective.

Ep. 789: You Can't Count The Cardinals Out Of ANY Game Right Now!

Ep. 789: You Can't Count The Cardinals Out Of ANY Game Right Now!

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the St. Louis Cardinals win on Saturday over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Busch Stadium.

Matthew Liberatore has been remarkable and was again on Saturday. But some defensive mishaps caused a solid lead to disappear as Jordan Walker and Brendan Donovan had some unfortunate moments in the field.

But for Jordan Walker to be the reason the Cardinals brought it back with his clutch swing to regain the lead, that's pure serendipity.

Ryan Helsley on a back-to-back is often a little nerve-wracking but great defense by Nolan Arenado and Alec Burleson in the ninth helped guide Helsley to a key... win? Why not a save? Regardless, impressive stuff from STL

Ep. 788: Oli Marmol Shows Some FIRE As Cardinals Hang On To Beat D-backs!

Ep. 788: Oli Marmol Shows Some FIRE As Cardinals Hang On To Beat D-backs!

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the St. Louis Cardinals win on Friday night against the Diamondbacks as Oliver Marmol was ejected after arguing against the objectively terrible strike zone of home plate umpire Ron Kulpa.

As so often seems to happen, Oli's fire may have sparked the Cardinals are the sixth inning became a rally that saw a key bases loaded walk by Herrera and a clutch swing by Arenado turn into four runs.

Miles Mikolas was brilliant once again as the Cardinals have now won five straight starts with him on the mound. What a turnaround it's been for the veteran!

Helsley had a hiccup in the ninth but held on for his 10th save.

Ep. 787: Cardinals Drop Their First Series In A Month -- Are We Worried?

Ep. 787: Cardinals Drop Their First Series In A Month -- Are We Worried?

The St. Louis Cardinals took their first series loss since nearly a month ago in Atlanta, when they lost to the Tigers 5-1 at Busch Stadium on Wednesday.

Andre Pallante was not at his best and struggled with walks, but he kept the Cardinals in it.

Unfortunately, the offense did not produce the way you wanted to see in a bullpen game. Was there a bit of a hangover after the tough way they lost Tuesday night? It's an interesting question.

And as we often see, you have to be willing to use your whole bullpen in games that you're behind rather than chasing the game with your favorite reliever or two.

Plus, we discuss the returns to the mound of Tink Hence and Quinn Mathews in recent rehab assignments!

Ep. 786: St. Louis Cardinals Battle Back On Skubal, But Lose It Late -- Did Oli Marmol Handle Key Decisions Effectively?

The St. Louis Cardinals fell to the Detroit Tigers 5-4 in a tightly contested game on Tuesday night at Busch Stadium. Brenden Schaeffer breaks it all down here in the latest episode of his daily Cardinals podcast, B-Schaeff Daily, describing some of the key points in the matchup that ultimately turned against St. Louis in a tough loss.

While there were numerous key decisions in the game that Oliver Marmol had to make, I'm not necessarily convinced that he erred with, really, any of them when you boil down the thought processes behind each.

But in what he spoke at the most length regarding in the postgame, Oli revealed the one decision point that clearly ate at him the most in retrospect of a hard-luck loss for the Cardinals.

Ep. 785: So... The Cardinals Might Just Be Legit. They THUMPED The Best Team In Baseball Monday!

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the St. Louis Cardinals THUMPING the best team in MLB on Monday as the Cards beat the Tigers 11-4 to maintain this incredible run they're on recently.

Sonny Gray was outstanding and continued a trend of his this season in the way that he rebounds from rough outings by showing his best work in the follow-up.

The offense stuck with it and put together a late barrage against the Detroit bullpen and old friend John Brebbia after a rain delay.

Is the play on the field turning up the heat on this idea that the Cardinals may not be able to afford to sell off contracts at this trade deadline the way many expected we would see coming into the year? This 2025 season could be one to remember, come what may.

This St. Louis Cardinals defense is unbelievable!

Masyn Winn, Victor Scott II, Brendan Donovan, and yes, in perhaps a more subtle way, Willson Contreras was a significant contributor to the Cards 1-0 win on Saturday in Kansas City.

Jordan Walker came up with the key swing, powering the lone run in the ball game as Miles Mikolas was brilliant yet again. If you don’t realize how good Mikolas has actually been this year, take a listen to some of these stats in this episode!

Ep. 783: St. Louis Cardinals Look Ahead: Tackling The Trade Deadline And Beyond

Brenden Schaeffer hosted a live episode of B-Schaeff Daily during the St. Louis Cardinals off-night on Thursday and ended up tackling a lot of long-view type of topics in a Q&A with Cards fans.

What will the Cardinals do at the trade deadline if they are winning and contending? What if they aren't? What if they're in the middle? And how much influence would Chaim Bloom have over that deadline, or is it all John Mozeliak?

Would Nolan Arenado still want out at the deadline?

The Cardinals wouldn't trade guys like Brendan Donovan and Lars Nootbaar, right? What about Walker and Gorman?

Will Oli Marmol be the manager next year?

So many topics handled in this hour-long podcast.

Ep. 782: Cardinals Win Streak Ends, But Momentum Remains After 14-Run Eruption To Win Philly Series!

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the St. Louis Cardinals splitting the doubleheader against the Phillies in Philadelphia on Wednesday.

Game 1 was a tightly played contest that had a playoff atmosphere to it, and the Cardinals simply came a play or two short from finding a way to come out on top. So, the winning streak ended.

But in Game 2, the Cardinals were resilient, overcoming an early 5-1 deficit with Sonny Gray not having very good stuff, and finding a way to score a bunch of runs off Aaron Nola and the Philly bullpen in a 14-7 onslaught victory.

Masyn Winn and Alec Burleson starred in the nightcap as the Cardinals kept the good vibes rolling into Kansas City.

Ep. 780: It's NINE Wins In A Row After Dramatic Cardinals W In Philly On Monday!

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the St. Louis Cardinals pulling off a thrilling win in Philadelphia Monday night, 3-2 over the Phillies to extend their winning streak to nine games!

The hottest team in baseball just did it in dramatic fashion, on the road, and this time it came against a legitimate contending opponent.

We dive into all the moments that mattered from this game, including key swings from Ivan Herrera and Masyn Winn, as well as some important defensive plays that didn't necessarily go the Cardinals' way.

We recap Matthew Liberatore's outing and make a (bold?) proclamation regarding his standing in the St. Louis Cardinals organization.

Plus, a bullpen that has been absolutely nails during this streak was at its best Monday, with Kyle Leahy and JoJo Romero setting the table for a vintage version of Ryan Helsley in the ninth (with a little help from Jordan Walker defensively).

Ep. 779: Cardinals SWEEP the Nationals! That's E-I-G-H-T (8) Wins In a Row!

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the St. Louis Cardinals 6-1 win over the Nationals on Sunday, Mother's Day, as the Redbirds keep things rolling by sweeping the Nats and winning their eighth straight game!

Miles Mikolas once again did all you could ask for, even if he felt like he could see his game extended beyond the 69 pitches that he threw, we explain why it was certainly the right choice by Oliver Marmol to turn to Steven Matz for what ended up being the biggest leverage spot in the game.

The Cardinals offense got some early power swings off against MacKenzie Gore with Nootbaar and Contreras both launching their sixth home runs of the season. It was even more impressive, though, the way the Cards kept at it against Gore and chased him from the game with a key insurance rally in the seventh inning.

Nolan Arenado tacked on a two-run homer of his own in the eighth to allow the Cards to comfortably complete the sweep!

Now, a big series in Philadelphia looms as the Cardinals send their top arms to the mound against the Phillies. Would a series win get the fans to totally buy back into what we're seeing? Sound off in the comments!

Ep. 778: Cardinals SURVIVE Anxious 9th For Helsley To Win SEVENTH Straight Game!

Ep. 778: Cardinals SURVIVE Anxious 9th For Helsley To Win SEVENTH Straight Game!

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 win over the Nationals on Saturday as Andre Pallante became the latest Cardinals starter to pitch an absolute gem.

Were we surprised to see him stay in the game for the eighth inning considering the rested nature of the bullpen? Perhaps, but it's also fair to say there weren't really any obvious signs of him slowing down prior to the Dylan Crews homer.

At that point, it was up to JoJo Romero and Ryan Helsley, the latter of whom had an adventurous ninth inning after some questionable pitch sequencing seemed to throw him off his game in the Josh Bell at-bat.

All's well that ends well for the Cards as they've now won 7 in a row. Can Miles Mikolas keep it going against a big-time strikeout pitcher on the other side Sunday?

More on Fedde's outing and his outlook, as well as the Cardinals lineup falling into form. Ivan Herrera is back and he contributed to a big game offensively for the Redbirds, who took their walks and hit their way in timely fashion to a 10-run output without the benefit of a single home run.

Brenden Schaeffer provides the comprehensive breakdown of the St. Louis Cardinals thrilling doubleheader sweep of the Reds on Wednesday in Cincy as Miles Mikolas got his first win of the season with the Cards bats finally waking up.

Masyn Winn has a two-homer game and caps a back-to-back-to-back sequence in the ninth inning of Game 1.

Victor Scott and Lars Nootbaar bring their lumber, too.

Oliver Marmol got ejected in a stylish way!

Gordon Graceffo was pumping 99-mph heat and covering five innings behind Steven Matz in the nightcap, allowing the Cardinals bullpen (which has suddenly been really good lately) to save bullets for the rest of the week.

Oli Marmol told KMOX there's "Nothing to point at" to explain reason for Cardinals road woes... Will this trend level out soon?

Andy Humphrey and Brenden Schaeffer discuss Oli Marmol telling the Gashouse Gang show on KMOX Tuesday that "there's nothing to point at from a preparation standpoint or a from a player standpoint where there's something indicating why we should not have success on the road."

Marmol sees the Cards' 2-12 road record as a blip on the radar that doesn't have a concrete answer and he expects it will be something that levels out over the course of the season.

With the rainout Tuesday, the guys discuss Cardinals topics looking into the rest of the Cincy series (understanding that we later learned of Tuesday's postponement after recording).

Ep. 768: Cardinals Offense Sleepwalks Through Game 1 In Cincy -- Why Are They So Bad On The Road?

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the St. Louis Cardinals dropping the series opener in Cincinnati against the Reds at Great American Ballpark, 3-1 as Nick Martinez out-dueled Andre Pallante.

Pallante gave the Cardinals a quality start and saw the bullpen do a solid job behind him, but he did not get the run support he needed to win this game.

Why have the Cards struggled so much on the road compared to their output at home this season? The road record is down to 2-12 while the club is 10-5 in games at Busch Stadium.

The Cardinals actually played a very solid game all the way through to the ninth, getting timely hitting and good defense to go along with a solid outing from Sonny Gray.

Ep. 763: Did Stubbornness From Cardinals Roster Management Cost Them In Atlanta?

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the stubbornness of the St. Louis Cardinals management as it pertained to the bullpen construction this past series in Atlanta.

There were guardrails on many relievers in the bullpen, guardrails which individually, we completely agree with being in place. But add it all up, and collectively, it arguably meant the Cardinals should have anticipated that they couldn't afford to carry the exact bullpen construction that they had for the Braves series.

We talk about it in depth on this episode of B-Schaeff Daily.

The St. Louis Cardinals Bullpen Woes Just Hit A Frustrating New Low

The St. Louis Cardinals Bullpen Woes Just Hit A Frustrating New Low

Andy, Brenden and Grant discuss the St. Louis Cardinals' loss to the Atlanta Braves from Wednesday afternoon at Truist Park.

No matter who Oliver Marmol turned to behind Miles Mikolas, the relievers didn't get the job done on Wednesday unless their name was Kyle Leahy (AKA Kyle EveryDeahy).

For everyone else, what did it matter the order Oliver Marmol called upon them? They flat out didn't do the job. So it begs the question, how did the Cardinals get into this spot in the first place?

Brenden defends Oli's in-game management while also criticism the overall approach that led to Ryan Fernandez still being with the big club for this series in Atlanta. Stubbornness may have gotten the better of Cardinal management with this one.

Ep. 762: THERE YOU GO, GORM! Clutch Swing By Nolan Gorman Propels Cardinals To Slump-Busting Win!

Ep. 762: THERE YOU GO, GORM! Clutch Swing By Nolan Gorman Propels Cardinals To Slump-Busting Win!

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the St. Louis Cardinals 10-4 win over the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night as the Cards got a hugely clutch swing from Nolan Gorman to break a tie in the eighth inning and propel St. Louis to the end of the five-game losing skid.

Willson Contreras also worked one of the toughest walks you'll ever see, and bat-flipped the heck out of it to set up the key Gorman moment.

We discuss how this night from Gorman is a prime example of the runway that Oliver Marmol and the Cardinals are expecting to give him in the days and possibly weeks ahead.

We break down the pitching, too, and potentially coin a new nickname for Kyle Leahy? #KyleEveryDeahy

Ep. 761: The Cardinals Bullpen Physically Can't Stop Blowing Games

Ep. 761: The Cardinals Bullpen Physically Can't Stop Blowing Games

Brenden Schaeffer discusses another rough go of things for the St. Louis Cardinals bullpen as this time the Redbirds had a lead going into the bottom of the eighth inning and the top setup men were unable to deliver the game safely to Ryan Helsley for a ninth inning save chance.

Plus, we're seeing a number of the young core players offensively regressing in their statistics lately. Although, credit where it's due, we saw some good things from Gorman, Victor Scott and others at the plate this evening.

It's just not enough lately to get the Cards over the hump, so we dive into exisential crisis time on B-Schaeff Daily.

Ep. 760: Cardinals Get Swept By Mets, Ryan Fernandez Struggles Reach Fever Pitch

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the St. Louis Cardinals 7-4 loss to the Mets on Sunday, capping a series sweep for New York as the Cardinals fall to a pitiful 1-9 record in road games this season.

The trio of Lindor, Soto, and Alonso combined to drive in more runs in this series than the entire Cardinals team scored.

Ryan Fernandez's recent struggles reached a new level on Sunday as we're left with more questions than answers about the state of the Cardinals after a series like this one.

Ep. 759: Lights Out For Libby, But... Where Are The Cardinals Bats?!

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the St. Louis Cardinals shutout loss to the New York Mets on Saturday at Citi Field as Kodai Senga carved up a Cardinal lineup that is suddenly looking extremely pedestrian over the past couple of weeks.

The season-long numbers don't yet fully reflect just how quiet the St. Louis lineup has become. What gives, here? Tough pitching or something more sinister about the Cardinals?

Masyn Winn homered twice in Memphis on Saturday, so he's closing in on a return from the injured list.

What should happen to Thomas Saggese, one of the very few Cardinals swinging a solid bat lately, when Winn returns from the IL? Brenden lists some names he would see demoted to AAA instead of Saggese.

Ep. 758: Cardinals Lose On a Lindor Walk-off To Squander Donnie's Heroics

Ep. 758: Cardinals Lose On a Lindor Walk-off To Squander Donnie's Heroics

Brenden Schaeffer discusses a painful loss for the St. Louis Cardinals as Francisco Lindor and the Mets walked it off on Friday night at Citi Field.

That's the seventh road loss of the year for the Cards in only eight games, and it was a frustrating one considering they got a few timely hits (including a clutch home run by Brendan Donovan in the top of the ninth) and decent enough starting pitching from Miles Mikolas.

Frankly, it was the bullpen slowly revealing some cracks that ultimately came back to haunt the Redbirds in this one.

Plus, JJ Wetherholt leaves early with an injury in Springfield.

Ep. 757: Should We Worry About The Cardinals Road Record? It's 1-6...

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the St. Louis Cardinals loss to the New York Mets from Thursday night as the bats were quiet and one bad inning cost Andre Pallante on the mound.

The Cardinals are now 1-6 on the road this season, which is a stark contrast to their 8-4 record at home. What do we make of this differential and is it something that is a cause for concern for the full season?

Ep. 755: Hunter Brown Shuts Cardinals Down—Six-Man Rotation Coming Wednesday!

In Ep. 755 of B-Schaeff Daily, Brenden Schaeffer discusses the St. Louis Cardinals losing 2-0 to the Houston Astros on Tuesday at Busch Stadium.

-Hunter Brown was darn good for the Astros, and the Cardinal bats were unable to take advantage of their best chances, going 1-for-7 with RISP

-Erick Fedde was good in his own right, giving up only one run to lower his season ERA to 3.43

-Kyle Leahy is an intriguing piece that continues to attract attention in this bullpen

-How will the Cardinals align their bullpen for Wednesday behind Steven Matz as the club expands to a six-man rotation on the fly?

-He will learn it if he has not already, but Paul Goldschmidt is not doing your celebration, Aaron Judge

Ep. 754: Nado Sticks It To The Astros (Again!), Sonny Shoves, Donnie Leads MLB In Hits!

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the St. Louis Cardinals 8-3 win over the Astros on Monday night at Busch Stadium.

-Brendan Donovan went 4-for-4 and now leads MLB in hits. Is it time for the Cardinals to deliver him a muffin basket and right a wrong from over the winter?

-Arenado could have been an Astro, but he didn't want to be, and now he's hitting nukes against them. That's fun!

-Sonny Gray shoved and this time, he navigated that pesky seventh inning and kept his composure all the way through

-Jordan Walker is turning into a stud defensively and the Cardinals may have Jon Jay to thank for it

-Willson Contreras' vibe is all the way back

Ep. 753: WILLSON IS BACK! And He Had A Postgame Message For Cardinals Fans???

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the St. Louis Cardinals 7-0 win over the Phillies from Sunday, including the revival of Willson Contreras at the plate as he put together a strong day offensively.

Plus, Contreras had a strong message for Cardinals fans, leaning into the notion that this team plays for the fans -- and is hoping to see them back at Busch soon.

Matthew Liberatore was terrific again for St. Louis on the mound, which allowed us to reset our views of the rotation now that the Cards have gone a full three times through it. Is the rotation in better shape than we thought?
