Care Speaks Meets Emma Perry
In this episode Mervyn speaks to Emma Perry, Senior Lecturer in Social Work and PhD Student.
Emma is a qualified social worker and Senior Lecturer in Social Work at the University of Gloucestershire. She has a practice background in local authority social work, working predominantly with older people. She has both researched and published on the topic of later life. Emma is also a PhD student at the University of Birmingham where she is researching new relationships in later life in residential and nursing homes. Her proposed thesis title is 'A qualitative study of new relationships in permanent care settings from the perspective of the non-care dwelling spouse/partner'.
Discussions include:
- What happens when older adults in long term care approach and form a relationship and also how they might respond to their partner forming a new intimate relationship
- What led Emma to this particular area of research, its propositions around the shifts in relationships and what they are - How are those relationships managed and negotiated within and between care settings
- What does Emma think of the American term " unintentional adultery'
