Episode 22: Can You Cosplay Another Race?
Racism. No one likes talking about it. It can be just as polarizing as politics, but it's a topic that doesn't benefit anyone if it's swept under the rug. Building off her series of TikToks addressing racism, Carmilla Jo shares her thoughts on cosplaying characters from different races and how we can improve as a community and as individuals within the colorful world we live in.

Episode 19: Black and Asian Solidarity in Cosplay
February is Black History Month. Unfortunately, February 2021 has seen an alarming spike in Asian hate crimes and murders. Racism is an ugly issue that cannot be ignored within the cosplay community, especially in light of gatekeepers and bullies who harass black cosplayers who cosplay non-black characters. Cosplay is for everyone, regardless of race, as it is a hobby that should unite passionate fans who share a common love of geeking out over their fandoms. In this episode, Carmilla Jo touches upon how Black history has shaped American culture and success, how Asian culture and history has played a complicit role in systematic racism, and how we can do better to become better allies and improve as a community.
LETTERS FOR BLACK LIVES is a crowdsourced project started by Christina Xu in 2016 in response to initiating discussions of the Black Lives Matter movement between younger Asians and Asian elders. The letter has been translated into more than 30 languages, including Traditional and Simplified Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Khmer, Hmong, Tagalog, Nepali, Hindi, Russian, and many more.

Episode 2: Mulan Cosplay Controversy
The live-action remake of Mulan is released on Disney Plus, today, September 4, 2020, after being pushed back from its original March 2020 release due to coronavirus.
Many of us watch live-action Disney remakes for the sole purpose of complaining over how the original animated films from our childhoods are far superior. Live-action Mulan has also faced many setbacks of its own, from lead actress Liu Yifei showing her support (likely coerced?) for Hong Kong police brutality, to Disney Plus tacking on exorbitant fees.
Despite everything that makes us want to boycott live-action Mulan, our host Carmilla Jo will cover:
- Why she made the cosplay despite the controversies
- How Liu Yifei may have been forced by the Mainland Chinese government for what she said
- The culture shock of freedom of speech
- The importance of supporting Asian creatives, especially in these difficult times. We have enough with being blamed for coronavirus, for one thing!
- Mulan is more than just a Disney Princess--she's a beloved centuries-old Chinese legend and badass that we all can look up to and admire.
