Talk Data To Me Podcast: The One with Cats In It (Season 2, Ep1)
In the first episode of Season 2 of the Talk Data To Me Podcast, Daragh O Brien is joined by Katherine O'Keefe (@okeefekat on twitter) and Carey Lening (@privacat on twitter) to discuss: Data Adequacy for the UK post Brexit The Data Protection & Infosec Snafu that is Clubhouse The role of data governance in navigating these kinds of issues! The resources link for this episode on the Castlebridge website is here.  Useful Links For Topics Discussed Daragh wrote about Data Protection by Design and getting data governance fundamentals right to support data protection earlier this month  We discussed the possibilities for a Data Adequacy decision in a blog post before Christmas (predates EU Commission Draft Adequacy Decision) UK Minister with responsibility for data protection said the quiet bits out loud in the Financial Times, and a summary is available here without having to navigate the paywall. Suffice it to say that the Commission's view that Adequacy is possible if the UK makes no changes to DP laws and implementation appears to be on shaky foundations already. Daragh spoke to Newstalk about Clubhouse - news coverage and link to the podcast episode is here.

Talk Data To Me - Episode 11: There might be some profanity
Talk Data To Me - Episode 11: There might be some profanity
Daragh and Joshua from the Castlebridge team are joined this month by Alexander Hanff from our friends in Think Privacy in Sweden. The topic of the podcast was the challenges in the second wave of tech solutionism for pandemic response. The topics discussed included the use of AI tools for social distancing enforcement, the importance of DPIAs that ACTUALLY follow through on things, and the issues of data quality and data governance that can arise with relatively new technologies with high error rates. A key question raised is this: if a mix of technologies with varying error rates are combined and sold as a solution for public liability risks in a public health crisis and they fail... who is responsible and liable? And is the social and societal impact worth it if we are just implementing public health theatre when the investment and resources might better be spent on Public Health Doctors and Public Health Informatics? Note: Alexander gets a bit passionate so there might be some profanity...

Talk Data To Me - Episode 8: Turbulent Times
Talk Data To Me - Episode 8: Turbulent Times
Daragh, Katherine, and Peter discuss turbulence and disruption and the importance of good data practices in this month's podcast. Topics we touch on include: The Schrems 2 ruling and our take on what needs to be done Covid data disruption - what that means for managing through challenging times Data Ethics - hype or hope? A key theme from our discussion is that, in turbulent times, it is important for organisations to get a handle on what data they have, where it is, and how they are using it. That requires a clear business strategy for navigating in turbulent times, an understanding of your data strategy and required data capabilities, and an appreciation of the impact of choices you will make in respect of the ethical challenges and opportunities in your business model. We also touch on the opportunity for European businesses arising from the turbulence in cross border data transfers to step up and provide alternative technologies. Talk Data To Me: Episode 5 - I'm not a unit of production, I'm a human being!
Talk Data To Me: Episode 5 - I'm not a unit of production, I'm a human being!
In this episode of the Talk Data To Me podcast, Daragh (@cbridge_chief) is joined by Katherine O'Keefe (@okeefekat), Peter Davey, and Katie and Joshua from the team to talk about the following topics: The European Data Protection Board's Guidance on Consent The EDBP published updated guidance on consent this month. Katie and Joshua took a look at it to tease out the potential implications. The TL;DR is that it reaffirms things people should already know and the design of consent mechanisms is going to be a key area for consideration by data controllers. DPC Cookies Sweep The DPC released the findings of their Cookie Sweep at the end of April. The team took a look this past month at the current "state of the nation" as part of some ongoing research (both Katie and Joshua are PhD students in the Adapt Centre in Trinity College working with Castlebridge). The consensus: a lot done, more to do, and organisations may be paying for the design choices of industry vendors. The consent guidance is also relevant here! Remote Working Sea Change Covid-19 response has seen the unthinkable happen in many organisations, with staff having to work remotely. Organisations are starting to work out how to manage staff in this new normal. That has some data governance and data protection implications, as well as presenting a huge organisational change management challenge. Peter and Daragh lead the discussion on this topic, and there is an interesting balance to strike between monitoring, management, and mentoring. Organisations need to decide what data they need to track performance and how they will measure it without crossing the line into the private space or treating staff like robotic units of production. Castlebridge's guidance on Data Protection and Change Management issues in remote monitoring of staffcan be found on the Castlebridge website.

"Damn it Jim, I'm an Engineer, not a Doctor!" - Privacy, Practicalities, and Ethics in a Pandemic Response
On a special edition of the Castlebridge PodCast (Episode title: "Damn it Jim, I'm an Engineer, not a Doctor"), Daragh O Brien (not a doctor) and Katherine O'Keefe (not that kind of doctor) are joined by Phil Booth of MedConfidential, Pat Walshe (@PrivacyMatters on Twitter) and Ronan Lupton (Barrister, and @RonanLupton on Twitter) to talk about the ethical, practical, and legal issues that arise with some of the proposed uses for technology and data in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. There's a lot to unpack as we tease through some of the challenges, opportunities, and risks that need to be navigated in using the significantly enhanced capabilities of the modern information age in the current crisis. It's all about trust, trustworthiness, and taking t-shirt wearing techbros with a pinch of salt. And Dr Michael J Ryan makes a guest appearance at the end.
