Joel Salatin, Farmer, Activist.
Season 9 episode 1
Joel Salatin gained national purchase through his appearance in the 2006 book, The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan. Joel had been known for years prior due to his pioneering work in regenerative farming. Joel has been at the forefront of a unique movement in American farming and husbandry that sought to bring sustainability to an economically and ecologically challenging profession - and all of it through his perspective as a believer. In today’s episode, Dan digs into all the aspects that make Joel’s unique perspective such a clarion call for believers. It is no longer merely about sustenance but about our creational responsibility to the created world. It is a prescient challenge in a turbulent time.

Jim Fiala and Mike Duffy, Restaurateurs
We are fascinated by restaurant culture; from celebrity chef’s, to cooking competitions, to fancy food photography, or finding out the latest hottest place to open in our neighborhood. But behind the facade is the hard day to day work of running a restaurant, managing people, and perhaps most importantly offering true hospitality. Today, Dan talks with two restaurateurs from St. Louis, Jim Fiala and Mike Duffy. They run quite different styles of establishments, one fine dining, the other a casual sports pub. Despite the difference in their establishments, they are both informed and shaped by their faith. Join us and listen to today’s fascinating conversation.

Brent Harriman, Pastor, Former Campus Minister
What is work life balance? Is it something to strive for, or is it merely something we have been inculturated to? In today’s podcast, Dan talks with Brent Harriman, the founding pastor of Resurrection Presbyterian Church in Knoxville and former campus minister with RUF about the specific challenges of ministry life. What are the expectations towards those in ministry as it relates to work, and how can those in ministry rightly challenge their own community. Dan and Brent talk openly about their own experiences, from their own unique perspectives; we think you will enjoy this candid conversation, so please join us.

Tyler Stephens and Sarah Doriani, Architect, Designer
Can the shape of a building, the design, use of materials, even the play of light in its corridors and rooms actually shape us as people? Can it influence our mood? Can it create a sense of awe? Point us toward worship? In today’s conversation with Tyler and Sarah, Dan explores how architecture and design can express personality, advance cultural goals, even impact and build relationships. At the heart of it though, is how their faith informs their work. Join us for this fascinating conversation, we hope you are both challenged and informed by it.

Steven Garber, former Professor of Marketplace Theology and Leadership, Regent College
Mentorship is much like planting a seed and nurturing it’s growth, tending to it until it bears fruit. As Steven Garber says, mentorship is the act of bringing one into vocation over the course of their life. As part of the burden of mentorship there is a deeper recognition that all of life falls under the Lordship of Christ. Dan and Steven acknowledge their influences from Lesslie Newbigin to Michael Polyani to Abraham Kuyper, and along the way they discuss everything from marketing, to knowing, hiking, politics, and their aesthetic sensibilities. Join us as we conclude season 7 with this profound and stimulating conversation on faith and work.

Jen Pollack Michel, Author
To be human is to desire, and that capacity can be directed toward things both sinful and holy. Jen Pollack Michel says desire “can bring us most honestly and vulnerably into the presence of God, and He is the one who rightly orders our desires.” In this wonderfully vulnerable discussion, Dan and guest host Abby Karsten discuss the nature of desire, how God shapes and orders the longings of our heart, and what it means when even our rightly ordered desires are not granted.

Russ Ramsey, Pastor, Author
It thrills us, challenges us, moves us, frightens us, fills us with awe, wonder and hope: art. The creative impulse is a vibrant and wonderful thing, fully mysterious in the ways in which it has inhabited individuals throughout human history. On this week’s episode of Working w. Dan Doriani, Dan talks with pastor and noted author Russ Ramsey about his latest book, Rembrandt is in the Wind. Russ addresses the transcendence of art, but also the vulnerability of the wounded humans behind our great masterpieces. What does art, and the broken lives of artists, tell us about the world? More fully, how can we see the gospel threaded through the miasma of their pain?

Sandra McCracken, singer/songwriter
Music has the ability to comfort, to inspire, to bring us to a place of worship. Sandra McCracken has been making music that does all of that for several decades. Sandra has had a successful solo career and has been a member of several influential and well-known groups. Perhaps best known for her recent work crafting songs from the Psalms intended for congregational singing, Sandra and Dan discuss the nature of songcraft in this episode. How does inspiration strike – or does it? And why the Psalms are such fertile ground to compose modern hymns.

Kelly Kapic, professor of Theology at Covenant College, author
“Our creativity is better with seasons of rest,” says Kelly Kapic, author of You’re Only Human: How your limits reflect God’s Design and Why That’s Good News and today's guest on Working with Dan Doriani. Rest is a reflection of our limitations, and limitations are more broadly a sign of our humanness. God made us finite, with boundaries to what we can accomplish. Our creatureliness, our dependency, and our finitude lead us toward humility, or at least it ought to. Dan and Kelly work through all the implications of being human in this illuminating conversation.

Tim Challies, author, book reviewer
Suffering is at the core of the Christian story, yet our experience of suffering as Christians creates all kinds of cognitive, spiritual, and emotional dissonance. Tim Challies, Dan's guest on this episode of Working with Dan Doriani, explicitly identifies this tension when he asks: "When we faced this time of tragedy, it was the time to ask: what is all this theology going to do for you? In your moment of need, are you going to turn away from it, or are you going to go deeper into it?"
Not only did Tim go deeper into it, but he also channeled his grief through his work. The resulting product was his book Seasons of Sorrow. Listen as Dan and Tim discuss the death of Tim's son, the gospel hope behind the sorrow of that loss, and how work – particularly writing – was Tim's way of processing and publicly healing.

Michael Kruger, Scholar, professor, author, and president of Charlotte RTS
The stories always come out afterward: churches fall apart, ministries fail, and congregants carry hurt with them for years. The issue of spiritual abuse in the church is both deeply painful but also relevant. We have heard the stories, listened to the podcasts, and seen or experienced the damage ourselves. In this episode of Working with Dan Doriani, Dan talks with Michael Kruger, author of the recently published Bully Pulpit: Confronting the Problem of Spiritual Abuse in the Church. They discuss the book, the nature of abuse in churches, and what there is to be done about it. For instance, could it be possible to prevent abuse before it even begins by writing job descriptions featuring firm accountability and deep transparency and emphasizing servanthood over power and humility over stardom?

Dr. Nii Addy, professor, researcher: Neurobiology of addiction
Addiction has a pervasive impact on our culture, ranging from legally available opioids and alcohol to illicit narcotics; addiction even manifests itself in mundane areas of our lives as well.
The challenge to overcome and conquer addiction can seem overwhelming to those held captive by it. And it is too often the case that relapse is experienced as an all-encompassing failure. In this episode of Working with Dan Doriani, Dan talks with Dr. Nii Addy, a professor at Yale and an expert in the neurobiology of addiction. On a hopeful note, Dr. Addy argues that relapse is but one step along the way to success; in fact, repeated attempts are the greatest indicator of success in breaking addiction. Listen as Dan and Nii discuss our brain's role in addiction, recovery, and the healing power of prayer.

Tom Nelson, President of MTF: Work that Flourishes
Our guest on this episode is Tom Nelson. The subject of faith and work is very near and dear to Tom's heart. He is president of the faith and work organization Made to Flourish, a pastor, and the author of several books including: “Work Matters”, “The Economics of Neighborly Love”, and, most recently, “The Flourishing Pastor”. In this episode Tom and Dan discuss the world of faith and work, and Tom's profound, lifelong commitment to bridging, what he calls, the Sunday to Monday gap. Tom’s most recent book, the flourishing pastor, offers a framework for ministry leaders to get out from the crushing burden of stress and crisis. Whether you are are a pastor yourself or simply a faithful believer ministering to a weary world through your daily work--issues of over commitment and burn out, along with the need for accountability and discipleship are nearly ubiquitous. Who are you leading? Who is leading you? As you listen, I invite you consider what flourishing leadership might look like in your life.

Abby Karsten and Chris Gordon, Women's Ministry: The Body at Work
In this episode, Dan sits down with Abby Karsten and Chris Gordon. Abby is the Women's Ministry Leader of the Kirk of the Hills Church in St. Louis, and Christine (Chris) is an author of Bible studies for women and co-founder of At His Feet. They talk a bit about their work in their churches and on writing bible study curriculum, but spend most of the conversation on a subject, quite literally, close to all our hearts: the body. Our bodies are not incidental, "we are integrated, spiritual and physical beings" Chris insists. Our bodies are how we experience the goodness of God's creation: watching the dawn break, hearing Beethoven's 5th, eating Indian food, holding a baby. And yet they can also be the location, and often the source of profound pain, shame, and longing. None of this is foreign to our incarnate savior, the trio reminds us. Jesus took on a body, was DEPENDENT on the body of his mother, worked with his body, and yes, probably sometimes got splinters.

Abram Van Engen, Professor: Origin Stories
Abram Van Engen is a professor of English at Washington University in STL, Executive Director of the Carver Project, and the author of 2 books. The second and most well-known is titled "City on a Hill, a history of American exceptionalism". By way of disclaimer, Abram and Dan both wrote theses on the Puritans, and nerd out about that on this episode from time to time. They also talk in depth about Abram's book "City on a Hill" and this idea of American exceptionalism, which may not immediately feel like it has bearing on your own vocation or work. But as you listen, we invite you to take note of the idea of an "origin story." Consider how you think about your own history. What "origin story" do you tell about your own career, and how does that shape the way you see yourself and your work?

David Karandish, A.I.: The Future of Intelligence
This week Dan sits down with CEO and artificial intelligence expert David Karandish. Karandish answers all our pressing questions about A.I. like: when do we need to start fearing the rise of the machines? Is A.I. just human beings playing god? How will A.I. affect job displacement? And how can we best please our robot overlords? (Just kidding, we're all going to be fine.) David offers a window into the fascinating beauty of technology and how it fits within the creation mandate to be fruitful, multiply, and fill, gently subdue, and cultivate the earth.

Steph Hubach is a Research Fellow in Disability Ministry with Covenant Seminary, author of two books on disability in the church, and formerly the director of Mission to North America's Special Needs Ministries. Steph offers a theologically robust and deeply personal vision for what the gospel tells us about disability in both its physical and social dimensions. Governor Bill Haslam: A Faithful Presence in Politics

Bill Haslam is the former Mayor of Knoxville and Governor of Tennessee, and the author of Faithful Presence: The Promise and the Peril of Faith in the Public Square. For Governor Haslam, the work of the Christian in politics is to exercise faithful presence--neither withdrawing, nor assimilating with the broader culture. Haslam offers refreshing, and often surprising insights from his own experience in politics, and invites us ask "how do we [as Christians] act in a different way [in politics] so that we really are salt and light in the public square?"

Nancy Gruneisen, Children’s Librarian: Curating Curiosity

Shelley Milligan: Qualifying the Called
Shelley Milligan is the Managing Director of the Carver Institute, an organization geared towards empowering Christian faculty and students (particularly at secular universities) to serve and connect university, church, and society. She previously served as Associate Provost at Washington University in St. Louis and as the Assistant Head of School at Westminster Christian Academy. Shelley shares her own career journey, where at times she was stepping outside her realm of qualification, and at other times she seemed to move backward in the "success" hierarchy. Shelley helps us explore how ambition, qualification, and competence function in God's upside-down kingdom where it is often the foolish, weak, and powerless who are called to positions of authority and responsibility.
Some reflection questions: Have you had the experience of God calling you outside your comfort or qualification zone? What was that like? What do you think of Shelley's point that with privilege comes both opportunities and responsibilities?
Jim Talent pt. 2: Exercising Our Democratic Authority
In this second segment of our two-part interview with former American Senator Jim Talent, Senator Talent and Dr. Doriani talk more broadly about the American political system, the role of citizens in a democracy, and what Christians ought to expect from their elected representatives. He encourages believers to remember that Jesus didn't come to reform people or systems but to make new people and new systems, and that to put too much hope in politics is to put "new wine in old wineskins", and yet we all bear divine authority and responsibility which we must exercise thoughtfully and humbly.
Some questions for further reflections on this episode:
- Having listened to Senator Talent, what do you think Christians should expect from politicians? If you are in a position of authority, what can people expect from you in the way you conduct your work?
- Senator Talent makes the point that, in a democracy, each individual exercises a bit of sovereign authority. How do you navigate this responsibility without putting disproportionate hope in politics?
Jim Talent pt. 1: Serving the Public with Wisdom and Honesty
In this episode, Dan and former Senator Jim Talent discuss the timely questions: what are the responsibilities of a politician to the people they govern? What role does faith play in a Christian politician's work? How should we adapt to the changing political landscape we find ourselves in? Senator Talent navigates these big questions with wisdom, honesty, and grace. He says that in politics, as in all things, the Lord cares both for the ends and the means.
Some questions for further reflection:
- In your work, how do you navigate the tension between loyalty to outcome and loyalty to an institution? Put another way, which do you prioritize: process or result?
- Do you ever have to do or say unpopular things in your work? What does that look like?
Skip Ryan: Embracing the End of Success
The gospel is the anti-success message” - Dr. Joseph “Skip” Ryan. On our podcast we often get to hear stories of people who have had a lot of success in their work. While Dr. Ryan has had many successes in his work as a pastor and a professor, he has also experienced some significant set backs. Skip’s career was majorly detoured when he became addicted to narcotics, but in his failure he discovered a renewed love for the grace of God. If you find yourself struggling with perfectionism, shame, or the burdens of leadership in your work, this will be well worth a listen.
Phil Ryken: Living with Dual Callings
Dan sits down with Phil Ryken - president of one of the most prestigious colleges in the country, author of over 50 books, and formerly a long-time pastor. They dive into some of the questions Christians frequently ask about their work: how do I know whether or not I'm called to this particular career? How do I know when it's time to leave? And is full-time ministry the best/only way to serve? Additionally, they explore the world of academia.
Joe Buck: Announcing Sports with Humanity
Dan sits down with seven-time Emmy award-winning sportscaster Joe Buck and talks family, legacy, charity, the perils of social media, and of course — sports. If you enjoyed this podcast, check out our Facebook page: Center for Faith and Work, STL to join in the conversation.
How does the idea of a legacy from parents or grandparents impact the way you view your work? What do you think of Joe's critique of social media? Do you ever talk on social media in a way you would not in person? Are there things we can do to use social media more ethically?
