This interview with Shane Butler, Director of the Chenango County Office of Planning & Development, was recorded by Chenango Voice producer Diane Gallo on June 15th 2020. This was Butler’s first day back in the office after the pandemic forced a three month shutdown.
That shutdown put enormous pressure on internet service for government operations, hospitals, schools, mental health services, distance workers -- on every aspect of daily life, including the office in charge of helping to expand broadband connectivity within the county. In many instances, the pandemic forced the growth and development of connections to meet emergency needs. This growth highlighted a great need in some parts of the county, where there’s still a grave lack of connectivity.
In this report, we’ll get an overview of where we are, what still needs to be done, and how you can help.
