46. the We All Dream Sobremesa

Welcome to our first Sobremesa of 2024, co-hosted with @wealldream.world. This episode is a celebration of sisterhood and community, love and femininity. We invited women in our community to come together and welcome spring with us over a delectable farm-to-table meal curated by the talented trio of @piasplate. Our gracious host for the evening was @gather_les, a new spot in the LES which we definitely encourage you to visit. Thank you for having us!

In this episode, the guests of our Sobremesa shared their thoughts and reflections on their own journeys as women across different industries including fashion, tech, music, and more, as well as some reflections on what this new season means to them. So grateful for each and every single one of the people who attended our dinners, and to all of you listening :) Hope you enjoy this episode, and welcome to our dinner party.

40. Unidos Sobremesa

40. Unidos Sobremesa

Today’s episode is part of our Sobremesa series— which for those of you who might be new to CMC or haven’t listened to a previous Sobremesa episode, we bring together a group of creators from all kinds of backgrounds, we sit down for a delicious dinner, and stay for a meaningful conversation.

This time I co-hosted the Sobremesa with Unidos, a platform that highlights Latinx creators from all over the world.

This sobremesa is a celebration of all of the different cultures that make us one, with our differences and similarities, at the end of the day it's all about community.

Big thanks to our chef, Luis Eduardo, and to Casalú and Yola Mezcal for sponsoring the night. Also, thank you to La Obra for hosting us in their beautiful space, and to Sofi and Dan for being the absolute best collaborators.

Last but not least, GRACIAS to our guests who each inspire me to dream big and reach for the stars. Hope you enjoy this conversation between new and old amigos 🌀

38. Summer Sobremesa

38. Summer Sobremesa

As we wrap up summer here in NY, we got together for another Chevere means Cool Sobremesa —this time celebrating all those beautiful and refreshing summer nights. We co-hosted this dinner with @Sel.Aer at their showroom, showcasing incredible emerging designers from across the globe. This Sobremesa was an ode to another epic nyc summer full of late night meals, sitting outside, watching the sunset turn everything pink, and aperitif (or two), train rides to the beach, and new friendships. In the middle of NYFW, we decided to host a different kind of dinner, one without so much fuss and instead focused on sharing a home-cooked meal, meeting new friends (really hearing them out and getting to know each other), sharing a little bit of what our Chevere Means Cool community stands for, and it was truly amazing. We invited creators from different industries— from fashion to photography, textile artists to consultants and writers, and it was such an incredible mix of minds and perspectives that brought to life a truly unique dinner and conversation. Eduardo, from Arroces NYC, cooked the most glorious paella that transported us to the mediterranean, Casalú provided the refreshing drinks, and Sebas from Sastre curated the perfect playlist to go along with this meal. I'm forever grateful for the CMC community that comes together to make these dinners happen, and who I continue to feel inspired by time and time again. Wherever your summer took you, we hope this conversation brings you right back to that summer feeling of freedom and joy. Hope you enjoy it! Massive thanks to Sabrina and Gabi, couldn't have done this without you. And gracias gracias to our guests: Deb Leal Nia Thomas Peter Staples Monica Santos Geno Pedrero Rolly Robinson Delfina Balda Cassandra Mayela

35. chevere means: Sculpting Memories with Cassandra Mayela

Cassandra joins today's episode to chat about her journey as a Venezuelan artist in New York City. She's an incredibly talented textile artist who has used her pieces to start important conversations. From work like Maps of Displacement, where she brings attention to the massive migrant crisis in Venezuela through a textile sculpture, to opening a Free Store to provide those in need with basic pieces of clothing and sanitary products, Cassandra continues to inspire those around her. It was an incredible experience to be able to visit her studio and chat with her about her journey while she worked on a piece for an upcoming show. We talked about growing up in Venezuela, coming to New York, all the hurdles that she had to overcome to get to a place where she could really dedicate herself to her art, being a model, and just wanting to spread knowledge with those around her.

I left feeling extremely inspired from this conversation and wanting to take action, so I hope you enjoy this episode and feel the same way :)

Thank you for listening, and you can keep up with Cassandra and her work by following her @cassandramayela.

32. at Home Sobremesa

32. at Home Sobremesa

Sobremesa is back and this time we're bringing it home — home can be a house, a person, a song, a movie, a scent, a flavor. It's more of a feeling than a place, no? Since planning this trip back to Peru, where I grew up, I started to think about this idea of home and while Peru and Lima do feel like home at times, its more the memories I associate with growing up in such a yummy country that make me feel at home. It goes back to food —the spices, the local ingredients, the culinary fusion, and of course, the sobremesa. Sebas, the creator behind Sastre and a friend who I trust tremendously, asked to collaborate on a Chevere Means Cool Sobremesa hosted at Departamento Sastre and without thinking twice, I said yes. We asked Arianne Marie to join us and help curate the menu, table setting, and overall dinner, and her creative vision made this dinner all the more special. Thank you Sebas and Ari, you're both rockstars and a pleasure to create with :) For this Sobremesa, we gathered Peruvian creators to enjoy a family-style dinner, our interpretation of a home cooked meal, followed by intimate conversations between new and old friends. Curated by Arianne Marie and Sebas, and hosted at the beautiful Departamento Sastre, I can't think of a better way to feel at home. I hope you enjoy the candid conversation that naturally occurred at the Sobremesa between some of the most inspiring people I've met in Lima —from photographers, artists, directors, fashion designers, and more, they all shared raw reflections of what it means to be a creator and what it means to feel at home. This second Sobremesa felt personal, intimate, and expansive, all at once. Thank you to our wonderful guests: Pietra Possamai, Winemaker at Bodega Murga Paul Tejeda, Architect Francesca Ferreyros, Chef at Baan Peru Arianne Marie, Experience Curator   Sebastián Granda, all-things Sastre Maria Yzaga, Artist Mateo Llosa , Film Maker Nichole Bolivar, Co-Founder & Creative Director @deloretaofficial Melisa Holguín, Photographer Rish Chadha, Restaurateur at Dhaasu Camila Abufom, Actress and Restaurateur at Dhaasu Gracias x

31. chevere means: Handwoven Treasures with Gabriela Sacconi from Élope

31. chevere means: Handwoven Treasures with Gabriela Sacconi from Élope

We're joined by the talented Gabriela Sacconi to talk about her brand, Élope—featuring hand woven pieces at the intersection of art and design.
Gabi is a visual artist which translates in her pieces, both in the jewelry and clothing she creates. She uses materials that have the possibility of transformation, and is inspired by expansion and contraction to reflect the ways in which we move, migrate and interact with our environments and other beings that co-inhabit our spaces. All of her pieces are hand made and one-of-a-kind, and she works closely with techniques that require intricate attention to detail and care.
In this episode we talk about her journey from art school in the US to moving back home to Colombia to pursue Élope, and how it’s naturally progressed and grown with the support of her community. Gabriela has such a beautiful perception of nature and finds inspiration in things such as the changing states of sunlight to create her pieces. We’ll chat about this and more on the episode! Please follow Élope to keep up with their new creations and if you're in NYC visit Tumbao to experience these pieces in real life.

29. chevere means: Reimagined Artisanship with Mozhdeh Matin

I'm so excited to welcome Mozhdeh Matin to the podcast today. Mozhdeh Matin, formerly known as Mozh Mozh, is a Peruvian brand rooted in community, heritage and artisanship.

Mozhdeh grew up in Cajamarca, born to Persian parents and with a deep understanding and admiration for traditions. Her brand is an homage to these traditions, finding ways to honor these techniques while presenting sophisticated and modern designs. She’s also really focused on innovative materials that are kinder to our planet, thinking not only about how to honor traditions now but also thinking about the future and how we can make sure these traditions are carried along for generations to come. Mozhdeh Matin works with sustainable sources that seek to give back to all communities involved and who incorporate fair trade principles and standards into their core values.

We talk about her growth since launching the brand, the travels that have shaped her artistic perspective, her take on sustainability, we also talk about the creative movement happening in Peru and other parts of the world and what inspires her to continue to create. Enjoy!

Valen's heart and soul goes into each of these pop-ups, curating and celebrating Latinx talent in the most unique way. 22. Chevere means: Being a Responsible Consumer — In Conversation with Laura Reilly, Mona Esser Pennock, and Anna Gray.

(VIDEO PODCAST) We're back! During our NYC Pop Up we were joined by Laura Reilly, Mona Esser Pennock, and Anna Gray for a conversation around responsible consumption. We chat about what this means to them, how they've integrated it into their brands (and lifestyles), and how they continuously find inspiration in vintage, in NY's vibrant community and in not choosing the easy way out when it comes to navigating personal style—because that would be, you know, boring... In this episode we also take some audience questions from what advice they would give to other women looking to start their own businesses, to their secret tool to finding the best vintage (hint: an app you'll want to download ASAP). Enjoy!
