After closing out October we had to sit down with Domestic Violence Advocate Davora Buchanan.

Davora Buchanan is a Domestic Violence Advocate and Housing Coordinator.

In this role, she assists with housing domestic violence and human trafficking survivors. She finds joy in seeing the faces of all of the clients who are housed in their new apartments and excelling through the program!

Davora is dedicated to advocating for women's rights and domestic violence policies. Her goal is to bring more awareness to the community about domestic violence in men and women while providing resources such as clothing and food during their transitions from the shelter to their new units.

Davora's insights and expertise in this field will offer valuable information and guidance for those navigating through these challenging circumstances.

During this interview, we chatted with the amazing Dr. Ayanna Abrams as we discussed vulnerability and mindfulness.


Dr. Ayanna Abrams is a licensed clinical psychologist, CEO/Founder of Ascension Behavioral Health and co-founder of Not So Strong, an initiative to improve the mental health and relationship functioning of Black women. Her specialties include racism based trauma, mood disorder treatment, burnout prevention, and helping people create and recreate healthy romantic, friendship, career and familial relationships. She has extensive clinical and research experience working with Black people across the Diaspora and has been featured as a speaker or contributing writer in the New York Times, the Atlantic, Essence, Therapy for Black Girls, and Silence the Shame. She is also a contributing author to the books, Emotionally Focused Therapy for African American Couples: Love Heals and the Handbook on Counseling African American Women: Psychological Symptoms, Treatments, and Case Studies. She currently sits on the board of Black Girls Smile, Inc. and Silences the Shame non-profit organizations.

Towards the beginning of the pandemic, 

Jamesia completed a 7-Day Juice Fast in 2020 where she experienced her greatest spiritual awakening and eliminated non-cancerous cysts from her ovaries; after dealing with long and heavy menstrual cycles that would last for 3 weeks at a time. Since then, Jamesia has been fasting every 3-months for the past 2 years. Jamesia's most rewarding accomplishment was completing a 62-day master liquid fast from October 31st to January 1st, 2022 of last year, where she experienced a profound and powerful transformation. In her eyes, mental health is much more than the therapist’s couch, it weaves itself throughout every moment of everyday life, even the creative ones.
