18th Century Podcast

In this unscripted episode I go over the new mini-series created by the History Channel, Washington. Listen to my rambling thoughts on this show.

This speech was delivered by King George III during the year 1775 after the colonies were declared to be in rebellion, to the Parliament of Great-Britain. This speech was read during the opening session of Parliament.

This episode is short and a bit on the darker side of the 18th Century. After the execution of Major John Andre of the British Military during the War Of American Independence, a poem was found on his persons. I'll be giving a quick backstory to set the scene and then I will read the poem Major John Andre had on him as he died.

Wellcome back to an exciting New Year for the 18th Century Podcast! This is an update episode about where I want to take the show in the new year. Very straightforward, but a bit longer than usual. Happy New Year everyone!

In this episode of the 18th Century Podcast, I discuss what Christmas was like during the 18th Century. Most of what is discussed in this episode focuses on the English and Colonial traditions, but a couple others are mentioned as well. This will be the last 18th Century Podcast episode of 2019. In this episode of the 18th Century Podcast, I read a letter Thomas Jefferson wrote to his daughter Patsy. My apologies for no episode the prior week, other work was catching up with me and I did not have time to record an episode. This episode is brief, but I hope it will stisfy you until next week's episode on Christmas in the 18th Century. I still have a few things left to figure out for that episode, but just know it will be on Christmas. But some context for this letter. At the time it was written, Patsy, Thomas Jefferson's eldest surviving daughter was 11 years old at the time this letter was written.

I think most people forget that people back in the 18th Century were human too, and did have a sense of humor. Benjamin Franklin was known for his humor and I think this lighthearted episode is well needed and deserved. We'll cover some techniques spies would use to conceal their messages, and some notable spies from the 18th Century like Nathan Hale. We'll also discuss some spy activity during Benjamin Franklin's time in Paris. You don't want to miss this one!

First I'll read the Code Duello, which was practically the instruction manual for duels, then we'll take a look at a brief history of duels, then I'll tell you a little story of a duel which may have happened in 1792 called, The Petticoat Duel. 

In this episode of the 18th Century Podcast we'll take a look at the life of Mary Wollstonecraft. Though she was not as famous as her daughter, Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein. This episode will act as a brief bio for her life and struggles, through failed relationships, traveling to France during the Revolution, and the loss of those closest to her. She was not as towering as other figures of the time, but she still was important.

In this week's episode we'll be covering Cannons and a little bit about other Artillery as well. I was pressed for time this week, so my apologies for the dip in quality for this week's episode.

The Enlightenment is perhaps one of the most important philosophical and scientific movements in history. In today's episode we cover a brief history of The Enlightenment, we go over some of it's core ideas, and we'll do a mini bio for John Locke. 

I read Patrick Henry's Speech from 1775, Give Me Liberty Or Give Me Death. This is probably one of the more famous speeches in American History, and was a pleasure to read. This episode is a bit shorter than our regular episodes. Normal length content will continue next week.

We'll take a look at the early life of this Prussian Monarch, his accession to the Throne, the War of Austiran Secession, the Seven Years War, some Domestic Policy, his Personal Life, and his Death. This man was a fascinating figure and a true pleasure to research.

In this episode We'll be taking a look at games and gambling during the 18th Century. Many games they played in the 18th Century are still played today, but some have fallen out of fashion. Gambling was somewhat looked down upon, yet it was still very popular during the time. This was very interesting to research and I hope you enjoy this episode.

I have a special treat for you today! I'll be reading from, A New Manual, And Platoon Exercise: With An Explanation. It's a 1764 British Platoon exercise written by Adjutant General, Edward Harvey. I hope to give you a glimpse into the training of British forces during this time period.
