Choosing a Youth Football Offense - Part 3 - Popular Youth Offenses UBSW / DW / Wing-T / Beast Offense

Choosing a Youth Football Offense - Part 3 - Popular Youth Offenses UBSW / DW / Wing-T / Beast Offense

Choosing a Youth Football Offense - Part 3 - Popular Youth Offenses UBSW / DW / Wing-T / Beast Offense

In Part 3 of the Choosing a Youth Football Offense series we are reviewing popular youth football offenses; DW, WT and Beast SW based on 15 of the 25 important variables that I outlined in Part 1 and Part 2. At the last of part 2 we looked at the Unbalanced Single Wing Offense (UBSW) as an intro to Part 3.

In Part 3 of this series, Choosing a Youth Football Offense, we will look at the Double Wing Offense, the Wing-T Offense and the Beast Yale Single Wing Offense. In Part 4 we will look at the I- Formation, Power I, Wishbone and T- Formation. Part 5 will finish out the review of the Spread Offense, Gun-T, Pistol Offense and Split Backs formation. In Part 6 I will review Age issues in more detail.

  • The Single Wing is traditionally an unbalanced line, direct snap, power runs, deception, multiple ball carriers, unique formation from football’s past.
  • The DW Offense is a double tight end double wing formation with minimal passing, power dives, misdirection, ball control, with an overwhelming ground game.
  • The Wing-T is a Run-heavy football offense with misdirection plays, multiple ball carriers, power runs, and deceptive passing.
  • The Beast Yale Single Wing is a modified Single Wing; unbalanced line, 3 shifting blocking backs; power runs, misdirection, and versatile plays.

Choosing a Youth Football Offense Part 1 Important Variables

Choosing a Youth Football Offense Part 1 Important Variables

Choosing a Youth Football Offense is a tough decision for a new youth football coach and an experienced one too. Recently, I went down the Rabbit Hole to try find the magic solution or hidden door to answer this difficult question. In my research, many coaches will tell me what they think is the simplest or best youth offense and it is mainly the offense they already know. In a past blog post I did write about what I think are the Best Offenses for youth football. So even I will have a bias but hoping to but that behind me for this multi part article on Choosing a Youth Football Offense.

In this multi part article on Choosing a Youth Football Offense I am trying to move past my internal bias and look at choosing a youth football offenses based on about 25 variables that keep coming up when I talk to youth football coaches. I define youth football from 5u to 12u, not really 7th and 8th grade ball.

I would also like to thank many of the coaches in my Facebook groups and the Wing-T, Single Wing and Double Wing Facebook Groups for some great feedback and also thank Coach Kessler and Green for their thoughtful input.

Key Variables on Choosing a Youth Football Offense

Here are essential factors I’ll consider while evaluating and choosing a youth football offense for potential use:

  1. Age of Players
  2. Experience of Players
  3. Maturity & Memory of Players
  4. Size of Players
  5. Size of Roster / # of Players
  6. Minimum Play Rules
  7. Amount of Practice Time / Week
  8. Coach’s Experience / Knowledge of Offense
  9. Assistant Coaches Experience Levels
  10. Rec vs Select League
  11. Competition Skill Level
  12. Type of Defenses in League
  13. Type of Snap / Gun or UC
  14. Size of Offensive Linemen
  15. Blocking Skills / Calls
  16. Pulling Linemen
  17. Multiple Formations / Shifts / Motion
  18. QB Skills – Footwork / Hands / Passing
  19. Passing Capabilities
  20. Speed of Team / RBs
  21. Number of Top Running Backs
  22. Power / Speed / Misdirection / Pass Type Offense
  23. Versatility and Flexibility of the Offense
  24. Offensive System Easy to Learn, Install, Execute
  25. Available Offense Materials / Resources / Playbooks

8U Youth Football Team Season Status Before First Game

8U Youth Football Team Season Status Before First Game

8U Youth Football Season Status Before Our First Game

8U team 15 players mostly rookies with a top tier tailback, fullback, and lineman. We are down to 13 now.

Two players quit. Our fourth-round pick quit because of rides and possibly another team issue as a promise, and then we had a rookie player that did quit he did not like hitting or really playing football that much.

We had four weeks practice up until today and that is down from our normal six weeks of practice. So it's kind of been a rush into this first game.

I'm coaching with my longtime coaching partner, since 2010. I am just casually helping this season with the offensive line and some other things on Defense. We've got another coach that we've coached with in the past and a dad that we've turned into an assistant coach / helper. We have good group of coaches this Fall 2022 season.

Some team absence issues we are facing early are that we've got our top players out for the second and third game and because I've started casually coaching, I'm out of the 3rd and 4th game.  Since these are early games, we should be fine to work around these issues.

Our strategy / goal this season is to be one of the top four teams to get into the playoff’s championship tournament since many of our players are rookies and we're going to have some key absences on a few early games. These player absences can help the less experienced players get much needed game time to improve.

Struggles & Weaknesses

1. shotgun snap

2. backfield timing

3. blocking rules

4. contain on defense

5. arm tackling

6. position alignments

7. special teams

8. Timidness and mean gene

9. overall defenses needs more time

10. huddling breaking the huddle timeliness to get to the line of scrimmage

11. learning plays in a new formation

12. too much talking during practice and a little bit of lack of focus is hurting us

Strengths

1. got a great group of kids

2. blocking by our bigger veterans is pretty good

3. two top running backs

4. pretty good defense for the lack of practice we've had

5. overall, even though we're tempted we still are pretty good hitters

“Football’s not played on a whiteboard” is one saying that gets under my skin. Complete cop-out. The offseason is for finding schematic answers to issues. And there’s nothing wrong with saying “we have a dude at __ so thats not an issue” - https://twitter.com/CoachGusSmith1

====

Agree, or "I don't read books or do research, I already know enough football." That's not 110% effort from a Coach asking that of their players.

Offensive Line Practice - Fun Stuff!

Offensive Line Practice - Fun Stuff!

Offensive Line Practice - Fun Stuff!

In this podcast I talk about my time last night coaching a 7th grade offensive line squad. I had a great time with the big boys. We went through a Chalk Talk, Rule Blocking identification, Step Drills, Sumo Ring Quick Hands & Aggression Drill and Team Offense walk throughs. I absolutely love coaching offensive line and had to talk about it today. I hope you also learn to love coaching the o-line. You will be glad you spend more time with your offensive line. Reward them for their thankless job. FYI, they hate standing around watching you & the RBs perfect the backfield. LOL

Offensive Line One Page Practice Plan

00-10 min    Alignments, Gap Splits, Stance,

10-20 min    Steps and Get Offs

20-35 min    Blocking Rules

35-50 min    Blocking Techniques

50-90 min    Blocking Drill Time

JAWS Blocking eBook

Blocking is the key to a consistent scoring offense in youth football. Too many youth football coaches try to find a fast tailback and win by running back talent alone. In the long run that skilled RB talent may move, get hurt, let you down, and or not be the fastest running back in your league. You might only end up with less talented RBs but a top tier offensive line. Like Defense, the Offensive Line wins football games and most importantly Championships. Do not forget to focus on Coaching Youth Football Lineman.

O-Line Coach Bundle includes the OLine Drills eBook and One Pager

This is the New Offensive Line Drills eBook 25 O-Line Youth Football Drills Plus OLM One Pager Plan by Coach Parker. A social media reader requested an Offensive Line Drill ebook to match up to my Offensive Lineman Practice Plan – The One Pager so I scrambled this week and got one put together. This should also compliment my JAWS Coaching Youth Football Lineman Oline Blocking eBook. You can get the O-Line Bundle which includes all three too. This O-Line bundle would be great for Offensive Line Coaches.

Winning Teams vs Average Team - Why? What are the Differences? Review 7 8U Youth Football Teams

Winning Teams vs Average Team - Why? What are the Differences? Review 7 8U Youth Football Teams

I just finished the Fall 2021 Season with a 4-4 and a 1st round Playoff loss with an 8U rec youth football team. This was a tough season. Since it was so tough, I went back and reviewed 7 other 8U youth football teams that I have coached.  One was a young youth football team with losses and others with Super Bowls and top 3 and 4 finishes.  I compared 25 characteristics and came to a few conclusions. Listen to the podcast and let me know what you think of my conclusions. Thanks Coach Parker

You can find the video with the charts here....

This youth football podcast may tell you how you can win more youth football games in a difficult youth roster situation.

Keys to Winning vs Losing youth football teams

  1. Paper Draft Picks = Great players on the field
  2. Very Few Absences on Winning teams
  3. RBs Have Speed – key outside speed – High FB IQ
  4. Experienced RBs - 2nd season as BCs
  5. 6+ great players – two-way starters, many keepers
  6. Older Players within age group
  7. O-line was great – focused coaching at OL
  8. Strong on Defense with top skilled players LBs, CBs, DEs, DTs maybe 1 or 2 weak players on Defense
  9. Few Weak Players or MPPs on team
  10. Focused Coaching by All

How do you know what works on a Youth Football Offense against an unknown Defense?

This episode is also available as a blog post: https://coachparker.org/2020/06/16/works-youth-football-offense-defense/

How do you know what works on a Youth Football Offense against an unknown #1 Defense? This is a great question about youth football offenses. I struggle with this offensive issue against new teams and many times for the first game of the season. Everyone hates the unknown! How does your team stack up against the league? Are we as good as our last season and last week’s scrimmage.

This episode on How do you know what works on a Youth Football Offense against an unknown Defense? tries to answer that question.

Expert Defensive Game Planning Strategies For #1 Youth Football Defenses

Expert Defensive Game Planning Strategies For #1 Youth Football Defenses

This episode is also available as a blog post: : https://coachparker.org/2020/08/10/defensive-game-planning-youth-football/

Defensive Game Planning

First in your defensive game planning, make sure your base run and pass defenses are sound and that everyone knows their position responsibilities and the back-ups are ready. Most youth football players love defense so preparing for defense is easier than offense. Make sure your Head Coach gives you the needed prep time. Sometime HC/OCs get focused on offense and defense is the step child.

Defense wins Championships so practice Defense. Many smart coaches will only put top players on Defense and skimp on the offensive line. You choose your poison. If your opponent does not score you will probably win. If your offense is not up to par then make sure your Defense is ready to go. Make good choices on where to start your best players on Defense is a good defensive game planning strategy for youth football.

Choosing a Youth Football Quarterback

Choosing a Youth Football Quarterback

Welcome to the new episode, Choosing a Youth Football Quarterback on Coach Parker's Coaching Youth Football Tips and Talk Podcast.

A Social Media Subscriber asked me a few weeks ago what do I look for in a youth football QB?  Good question and a tough one. We have 3 weeks of practice and scrimmages to choose. We are usually looking at 2 to 3 players for QB and get down to 2. We already know our QB Profile for our offensive scheme. We run more Single Wing Wildcat style offenses so not a huge issue for QB. Older teams we will run Spread and look for more of a traditional QB with our Wildcat back. May find a great QB once every few years…. You must DEVELOPMENT your youth football QBs!

Mainly I look for a Smart, Ball Manager, that I Trust with the football.  More detail….

  1. Smart
  2. Trustworthy
  3. Football iQ
  4. Good Ball manager

Keys to Fun, Success & Winning Part 5

Keys to Fun, Success & Winning Part 5

Keys to Fun, Success & Winning Part 5

  1. Coaching through Teaching, Demonstration & Progression
  2. Coaching Special Teams – Do not forget the 3rd phase of football

More at CoachParker.org and more Podcasts or Youth Football Playbooks

Coaching through Teaching, Demonstration & Progression

  • Make sure you teach not just Coach blowing ur whistle & yelling we need to block.
  • Respect your players, not boss them around. Be Disciplined not a Tyrant. Encourage
  • Motivate, involve, include and create and atmosphere of FUN but Win too.
  • Reward more and often rather than punish too many Coaches want wind sprints.
  • This is youth football and society is changing, its not old Bear Bryant anymore
  • To teach you must become an expert, what football info did you learn last & when?
  • Teaching is communication. People start learn after 3 to 5 sessions.
  • Repeat same thing multiple times and say it a little differently each time.
  • Be open to answering questions, sending out info and YouTube videos – Zoom
  • I started writing my youth football playbooks to become an expert -> teaching
  • Coaches demonstrate the skill.  You must know football and played to be great
  • Demo on a bag, another coach or one of your big lineman. Show them they can
  • Break skill down into steps or Progression teaching try not to overload them
  • Prog. Blocking Example  - Stance, Steps, Hands, Engagement, Drive, & Finish
  • Continued reps and training – require and expect everyone to get better
  • Test and Evaluate in Scrimmages and Games – Continuous learning

Youth Football Special Teams - Key to Winning More Games

Kick Off –

  • Onside Kicks most popular
  • Deep kicks allow for long returns dangerous unless practice
  • Kick to a MPP or big lineman with no hands
  • Find a soccer player on your team to try out for kicker
  • Practice kicks 20 reps before practice 10 to 15 yard kicks to 2nd line near sideline
  • Accuracy over Distance

Kick Return –

  • Hands and Speed
  • Hands team only
  • Do not hide MPPS here – it will cost you
  • Trap Kick Return
  • Assign players to block bu numbers system
  • Watch film and find out where opponent will kick; short deep right left etc

Punt –

  • only within your 10 or 20.
  • Most dangerous play in youth football
  • Too many variables – snap, kick, return coverage, open field tackles
  • We tend to fake punt more
  • Rugby Punt
  • Quick Kicks on 3rd down so opponent doesn’t put stud RB back

Punt Return –

  • no one touch the ball but your hands guy if drops in his hands
  • Punt block
  • If return best hands person and only if ball drops in his hands
  • Unless they have good punter drop two back to field the ball and let them block for each other
  • Lost a few games to this issue fumbling PR

PAT Kicks / Field Goals –

  • Great if have kicker / Soccer player
  • Big OLM work too – straight leg kicks
  • Fakes work great too holder best RB back
  • Some leagues PAT Kicks worth 2 points – make it worth it
  • Must be 60% positive percentage to make worthwhile.
  • Practice Practice Reps

Youth Football Terms and Vocabulary Podcast Part 2 Coaching Youth Football

Youth Football Terms and Vocabulary Podcast Part 2 Coaching Youth Football

Youth Football Terms and Vocabulary Podcast Part 2 Coaching Youth Football Find Part 1

Line of Scrimmage – 2 Imaginary horizontal parallel lines to the goal line running across the field at the spot of the football. One line is the forward tip of the football facing toward the defense and the other line runs through the back tip of the football toward the offense. The approximate 12 to 18 inch space between the two Off & Def LOS is the Neutral Zone.

Safety – This is a 2 pointplay for the Defense. The offense will end a play in the end zone either by tackle or kneeling in the end zone or a penalty by the offense. Offense will then punt from the 20. In past sometimes an offense would do this play to be Safeinstead of giving the football to the Defense so close to the goal line.

Defensive Safety or Free / Strong Safety – These are Defensive backfield players. They play deep at 15 yards. They are the last line of defenders for the Defense. They will SAVEthe Defense on deep plays. Usually there are one or two Safeties; Free Safety and Strong Safety. They are usually very fast and great open field tacklers with excellent pass coverage skills.

Interception – When a Defender catches the Offensive forward pass. During the interception play, the Defense can advance the football trying to score. At end of interception play the Defense retains possession and becomes Offense.

Backfield – During an Offensive play, these are the four Offensive players that can be aligned behind the line of scrimmage, thus in the back. These are usually the QB, TB, WB, and FB.

Quarterback – In modern football the primary offensive backfield position to receive the snap from the Center. He is the leader of the Offense, play caller, ball manager / handler and primary passer. In the past, he was the closest to the football in the backfield to pitch or handoff and in the Single Wing Offense used as a sniffer or blocking back.

Running Back – Usually 2 or 3 Offensive backfield positions that can carry the football, block or receive a pass in football. Mainly he is a primary ball carrier like the TB, FB or HB.

Fullback – Main blocking back. Usually big and quick. Will be one of the 3 running backs in the backfield. Does not carry the football much except on power plays and short yardage. Sometimes will run screens too. In recent times the FB has turned into a blocking back / Sniffer. Usually aligned in front of HB, TB and closer to LOS, maybe even sniffing at it.

Halfback – Usually one of the two main running backs, especially if not a power running Offense.  The HB would be switched with the FB for a speedier back. Usually the 2nd best speed runner in the backfield.  In a Power I or Wishbone example, the backfield would include the TB, FB and Halfback. Maybe aligned offset from the QB next to either FB or TB. Sometimes the TB and HB are synonymous .

Tailback – premier ball carrier / RB in the Offensive backfield. Usually the deepest RB. The TB is fast and very agile. Top RB on your football team. Usually aligned directly behind the QB. Could also be called a HB synonymous sometimes.

Youth Football Vocabulary Ep1

Youth Football Vocabulary Ep1

This is Coach Parker's Youth Football Vocabulary Podcast Series Episode 1. In this Youth Football Vocabulary series, Coach Parker will review common and not so common football terms and give examples of how they are used within youth football coaching.

  1. Audible – Calling a different play from initial play call at the Line of Scrimmage. You might hear the QB yell “Check, Check” to start the audible verbiage.
  2. Beast Offense – Yale Single Wing with one beast running back and 3 sniffers either right or left just behind the offensive linemen.
  3. Cadence – This is the Snap Count, Like Ready Set Go. And or the tone or rhythm or speed of the words within the snap count. Usually done to draw the defense off-sides.
  4. Chalk Talk – Usually a team meeting or Coaches meeting where plays are drawn on a black board with chalk or today most likely a white board with dry erase markers or your tablet PC.
  5. Cloud – Defensive Secondary call for the Cornerback to cover the short underneath coverage  Zone usually in the flats.
  6. Flanker -  Offensive Running Back off the LOS lined up outside the Offensive End.
  7. Sky – Defensive Secondary call where the free-safety and not the CB will cover an underneath flat passing coverage Zone.
  8. Skull Session – a team chalk talk meeting where O’s offense and X’s for Defense or drawn on a board or paper. The combined O and X together will look like a Skull.
  9. Trap Play – when the offensive line allows a defensive player usually a D-lineman through and then he is blocked from the side by a pulling guard or maybe a fullback. Sometimes referred as a kick-out block too especially against a defensive end / contain player.
  10. Zone Defense – Usually refers to a Zone pass coverage vs man to man coverage. Each passing Zone defender will defend an area of the field.

What is the Beast Formation?

What is the Beast Formation?

What is the Beast Formation? It is the Yale Single Wing Formation from the 1920s developed most likely by Walter Camp. Tom Flores in his Coaching Football book diagrams the Yale Single Wing. I found the Beast Formation in 1994 while doing research on football formations in the Playmaker Football Software app on the Apple Mac. I was coaching my first pee wee team and wanted something easier to teach than the Power I which we were struggling with at the time as new youth football coaches. I eventually wrote a book about the Yale Single Wing in the Power Wing Beast Offense for Youth Football.

The main Beast Formation (Beast Tight) has an unbalanced offensive line with 3 sniffer blocking backs aligned behind the 3 outside offensive lineman in the formation. The Blocking Backs / Sniffers stand right behind the OL with their hands on the OLMs hips to give them a nice push off at the snap. The main Running Back / Beast Back is aligned in a shotgun just behind the A gap or strong side OG. You can also align the RB under center. This Beast Formation variation is a power running short yardage formation although many long yardage gains occur routinely. This formation is very strong in the C, D, E gaps.

For more information on the Beast Offense head over to CoachParker.org for more info.

Choosing a Team Mom in Youth Football / Sports

This is a podcast / video on Choosing a Team Mom in Youth Football or Sports by Coach Parker. This is based off an article written back in 2011 on CoachParker.org. https://coachparker.org/2011/01/09/choosing-a-team-mom-in-youth-football/ Choosing the right team mom is a very important decision for the head coach. Making the right choice takes a ton or pressure off the coach.
