We're Taking a Little Break!
We decided to pause the Podcast for a bit to focus on other Coastline things, but fear not: we'll be back soon with some podcast-specific stuff we're really excited about!
The Story of God: Resurrection
Hunter and Family Theologian Andrew Faris close out the Story of God/From the Garden to Eternal City podcast series by talking about podcasts, the beauty of Scripture, the importance of church, and living like the resurrection of Christ actually happened and actually matters.
The Story of God: Invited to Participate
Garrick and Hunter discuss his sermon from this past Sunday, birthdays, the connection between our new creation and creation itself, friendship, and missional grants!
If you want to find out more about missional grants, you can click here!
The Story of God: Jesus as High Priest
Dr. Jeannine Hanger joins Hunter and Michael to talk about Jesus' role as high priest, what it means to work out our salvation, and the first movies we saw on dates with our spouses.
The Story of God: Kingdom of Priests
Hunter, Nikki, and Garrick talk about second chance stories, recap Garrick's sermon from this past weekend (which you can listen to here), and trace themes like priesthood and kingdom throughout the Story of the Bible. Stick around until the end for some great sharing and Garrick's attempt at a new catch phrase.
The Story of God: Creation
As we tell the Story of God in our next teaching series, we thought it'd be fun to spend time on the podcast diving into some of the recurring themes and tracing how they're mentioned throughout the Bible so that we can understand that God's story didn't just happen... it's still happening in our lives.
In this first week, Hunter and Garrick talk about John Grisham, Genesis 1:1-2:3, and how being creative is more than just a vocational call.
Easter 2024 Wrap-Up
Hunter, Garrick, Nikki, and Richelle take some time to talk the highs and lows of Easter 2024: the pivoting, the amateur weather watching, the faithfulness of God, the passion of our Coastline Family... this Easter was unforgettable, so take some time to relive it with us.
We'll see you next year at SkyZone! (Hopefully)
Layers: Surrender
Hunter sits down with Family Theologian Dr. Jeannine Hanger to discuss spoilers, her sermon about surrendering to God (you can listen to that right here), and her upcoming book which is available for preorder on Amazon!
Layers: Fasting
Hunter sits down with returning guest (or champion!) Melinda Hurley to talk about the upcoming food fast here at Coastline. Not only do they discuss the purpose behind fasting, how fasting or giving up anything can lead to revival, but they also provide various pragmatic tips as you consider a one, two, or three day food fast with members of the Coastline Family!
For more information, check out our website. If you want to join the Zoom calls on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, click here!
Layers: Sitting in the Weeds
Shawn and Hunter sit down with Lianne de la Peña, a Christian counselor here in the South Bay and discuss Shawn's sermon from Sunday, March 3rd. We not only really loved Shawn's message, but we talk about it for pretty much the entire episode, so if you want to listen to it before jumping into this episode, you can do so here.
Layers: Honesty with God in Prayer
Hunter sits down with Margaret Grieco, one of our prayer leads here at Coastline. They talk about honesty in prayer, how prayer becomes a place to hide or perform, and what they wish everyone knew about receiving prayer on a Sunday morning.
They also talk about the Layers Prayer, which is something that we're really excited about. You can find it here and begin implementing it into your own life.
Layers: Spiritual Direction
We're SO excited to bring you this conversation with Susan Johnson, the founder of South Bay Soul Care. We talk about what spiritual direction is, who it's for, and what you can expect should you choose to sign up...
... and you SHOULD choose to sign up because Coastline believes in spiritual direction so much that we're offering to pick up the tab for your first session. Want to know more? Listen to the full episode and then head to our website.
Podcast Primer: Layers
Happy Lent! Happy Tuesday! Hunter and Garrick are kicking off the Lent season here at Coastline by giving you a primer on our Lent series: Layers. Garrick and Hunter get into all the different ways that Coastline is inviting you to step in to transformation. It starts with our Ash Wednesday service, which is on February 14th (aka Valentine's Day) at 7:30pm in the Sanctuary at St. Andrew's.
Also, Garrick mentions Dr. John Coe's Spiritual Formation lecture series. You can find those here.
Daniel Hendrickson: "We're Saved into Family..."
In our final episode of our Surviving the South Bay podcast series, I sat down with the Lead Pastor of Calvary Chapel Palos Verdes, Daniel Hendrickson. In a familiar location Daniel and I discuss his story, his journey to the South Bay, some of the strongholds he and I both see, and of course... the local's only Lightning Round!
Thanks to everyone who has participated and engaged with this series. It was a true joy to be able to bring you these conversations!
Mike Dsane: Fighting Back Against a "Security" Mindset
Loved this conversation with Mike Dsane from King's Harbor. We talk about how he came to South Bay several years ago, what his journey has been like as a pastor in a church like King's Harbor, his hope for church planting and a lot more! We recorded this in King Harbor's new studio, so if you're hearing a bit of room noise, that's why! Either way: I can't recommend this episode more!
Jason Cusick: “We Have to Do the Long Work of Building Community…”
Absolutely loved talking to Jason Cusick from Journey of Faith! We discuss his story, his methodology behind some of the ministry that Journey of Faith does, and his views on ‘being a normal person.’ Come for the Star Wars talk, stay for the Locals Only Lightning Round!
Brittany Park: The Good Life as Revival in the South Bay
In the next episode of our Surviving the South Bay Series, I sat down with Brittany Park from Remembrance Community Church in Lomita, CA. We talk about our history together, her call to ministry, and how Jesus offers us the good life despite our efforts to try and define that for ourselves.
Bill MacPhee: "Whole Hearted Flourishing as Revival in the South Bay"
In our first conversation with different pastors from different churches in the South Bay, Hunter sits down with Bill MacPhee from the River Church. They discuss Bill's journey to the South Bay, his views on the unique strongholds and sins of the area, and wrap everything up with a rousing entry into the Locals Only Lightning Round.
Podcast Primer: Surviving the South Bay
Happy 2024, Coastline! We're excited to kick off the new year with a brand new teaching series: Surviving the South Bay. Over the next several weeks, we're going to take a look at some of the unique sins and strongholds that exist in our community and look for ways that we can root ourselves in the kingdom instead in our dominant culture. This will be challenging and stretching, but we think that it'll ultimately be great.
On this episode of the podcast, Hunter and Shawn talk about doomsday prepping, the unique nature of the South Bay, the intricacies of this teaching series, and introduce a new segment called the Locals Only Lightning Round!
2023: A Reflection
Join all 6 of the full-time Coastline Staff members as they discuss the year that was: the highs, the lows, and all the pickle ball you could possibly handle.
All I Want for Christmas is You
Merry Christmas! As a gift, we've decided to give you one last episode of our Christmas Hymn conversation... but instead of a deep, theological, timeless song, we discuss Mariah Carey's 1994 stone cold classic "All I Want for Christmas is You."
Thanks for listening, Merry Christmas, and we'll see you next week and every single week after that!
What Child is This?
Michael and Hunter finish up (maybe?) this year's Christmas Hymn series by talking to our friend JP Donelan. JP plays guitar at Coastline most weekends, and we discuss how he found us, what his role is on a Sunday, and his connection to T-Pain. The three guys then listen to some songs that some consider Christmas-y while others do not.
Then, they listen to "What Child is This?", a straight forward song that invites us to ask some big questions about Christmas and its implications for us in 2023. Thanks for listening, and Merry Christmas!
The First Noel
Silent Night
Michael, Hunter, and Richelle talk about their Spotify Wrapped, "Silent Night", and how much theology they think Christmas songs actually need. We hope you enjoy the TWO versions of "Silent Night" in this episode.
Away in a Manger
Our annual Christmas Hymn series is BACK! But, before the hymn talk, Michael and Hunter talk about the Eras Worship night. Who came up with the idea? How'd it go?
Then, Hunter and Michael discuss Away in a Manger, a hymn with mystery and heresy. And get this... it was made for kids! Sound interesting? We thought it was!
Living Water: A Thanksgiving Devotional
What do you get when you cross Bruce Springsteen with John 7:37-38? A Thanksgiving Devotional, brought to you by Coastline Covenant Podcast.
(Note: There's a lot of copyrighted music in this episode, so if you're affiliated with Bruce Springsteen, the Chromatics, or any other artists used... please don't be mad!)
Christianese: Covenant
In the final episode of our Christianese series, Hunter, Shawn, and family theologian Andrew Faris take a look at the word covenant and how it is a helpful way to understand the story of Scripture as well as God's love for us. Also discussed: Chipotle, identity theft, and how much Hunter and Andrew hangout without Shawn.
Christianese: Asking Jesus into Your Heart
On this episode of our Christianese series, Hunter and Dr. Jeannine Hanger discuss the idea of "asking Jesus into your heart." Where did it come from? How'd it go so popular? And most importantly... is there more to being saved than praying a prayer? Listen to this episode to find out!
Christianese: Quiet Time
In the next installment of our Christianese podcast series, Hunter, Michael, and Nikki discuss the idea of "quiet times." You know it as a time where you are quiet with the Lord... but is that all that it is? Is value to opening up the term to different times? Is there a beauty in experiencing God beyond just reading your Bible? Listen to this episode to find out!
Christianese: Fellowship
We're excited to bring you a brand new series here on the podcast called Christianese, where we're taking a look at some "church-y" words we say all the time and diving into their origin and how they made their way into the church.
On this first episode, Garrick and Hunter talk about fellowship. Where did it come from? Why is it so important? What does Red Dawn have to do with it? Find out the answers to these questions and more!
100th Episode Extravaganza
All 6 Coastline staff members gather to reflect on the past 100 episodes of the Coastline Covenant Podcast. We look back, look forward, and play some fun games.
In all sincerity, thank you to all who have listened, shared, or interacted with the podcast. When we started this thing 102 episodes ago, we had no idea it'd get to where it is today. We're excited for the next 100! With overwhelming gratitude, we say THANK YOU FOR LISTENING... and, of course we'll see you next week and every single week after that.
The Announcement Before the 100th Episode
Our 100th Episode comes out next week! Until then, drop a question here (on Spotify) or email hbabcock@coastline.family. Thanks for listening, and we'll see you next week!
All Things Women's Ministry (with the Gals)
Hunter sits down with The Gals (Nikki Hernandez, Therese Manning, and Alicea Hernandez) to talk about all things Women's Ministry here at Coastline. The main idea: women, we see you! We want to create a space for you to be in friendship with other women. We want to see you at The Manning's House (20410 Reynolds Drive, Torrance CA 90503) for a night of fun and community.
ALSO, you're running out of time to send in questions for our 100th Episode! Send any and all questions to hbabcock@coastline.family by tomorrow to make sure they're read on the podcast!
Say Hello to Our New Hires!
Hunter sits down with Coastline's two newest hires, Michelle Stout and Kegan Mori to talk all things employment! Just kidding... kind of. Kegan and Michelle get grilled about what they love most about Coastline, how they got the jobs, and what they're looking forward to the most.
Remember! Our 100th Episode is coming soon. We're opening up the mailbag for any and all questions! Send them in to hbabcock@coastline.family!
Let's Talk About Baptism!
Hunter, Shawn, and theo nerd Andrew Faris talk about BAPTISM! If you've had any questions or misconceptions about baptism, this episode is for you. The guys tackle immersion vs. sprinkling, infant baptism, water in the Bible, and tell stories about their own baptisms. This is such a great conversation: great depths and even greater laughter.
ALSO: our 100th episode is coming up! Send in questions for our Q+A Episode to hbabcock@coastline.family. Thanks!
Galatians: A Podcast Primer
Michael, Hunter, and Shawn talk all things Galatians! Beyond the theological themes and the hopes we have as we dive into this book, the three guys talk about what it means to be free, what worshiping freely looks like, and of course... Jimmy Buffett.
Coastline Membership 101
Hunter, Garrick, Nikki, and Shawn discuss church membership at Coastline! We're really excited for this season where we're asking you to officially join our family. Hear about why this is happening now, what this means for you, and how you can get involved!
Covenant Connection with Adam Edgerly
This week we're wrapping up our quick series called "Covenant Connection" with a conversation with Adam Edgerly, who oversees Covenant World Relief and Development.
Hunter and Shawn talk with Adam about his role and his duties, his heart for missions work, the way that the social action goes hand-in-hand with the Gospel, and his hope for Covenant pastors around the world.
Covenant Connection with Tammy Swanson-Draheim
Welcome back! We're returning from hiatus with Tammy Swanson-Draheim, also known as the President of the Evangelical Covenant Denomination. Hunter and Garrick ask her about her pastoral heart, how she ended up as president, and one thing she wants to tell the local church!
We Will NOT See You Next Week...
... or for several weeks after that! With the crazy schedules in the Coastline offices, we're taking July and some of August off. We'll be back on August 17th with new episodes. See you then!
Blueprints: A Church that is Home
It's our last week in the Blueprints series, so Shawn and Hunter talk about how the entire series has led to this point: the church is a home. What does that mean? Is there hope for those who feel as if the church isn't their home? How can we make the church more "homey" to both those inside and out? The conversation ends with Shawn and Hunter evaluating the entire series, and how it's been unique from other vision series. #movethatbus!
Blueprints: A Church that Persists in Doing Good
Hunter and Garrick talk about Garrick's sermon from this past Sunday about persisting in doing good in relationship. It's a rich conversation, one you *think* you have heard about, but one that is framed in an incredibly practical way. We hope you enjoy it, and we hope you listen through the end as we've added the testimony shared by Drew and Kelcy Messick. It's worth listening to, even if you've heard it before!
Blueprints: Unity
Shawn, Hunter, and Garrick talk about the importance of unity at Coastline by unpacking Coastline's unique view on women in ministry. If you've had questions about the theological reasoning behind certain views as well as questions about Coastline's 'third way', then this is the podcast for you! We hope you enjoy it.
Blueprints: Mission Friends
On this week's episode, Hunter, Garrick, and Nikki talk about Coastline's denomination: the Evangelical Covenant Church. We talk about our history with the covenant, what it means for each of us to be covenant, and little bit about what makes the ECC denomination unique. This is a really personal episode that helps to paint a picture of the history of Coastline, so if you've been with us for a while or wondered how we got to where we are, make sure you listen!
Blueprints: A Church that is Ordered
Hunter, Nikki, and Shawn talk about the most exciting thing possible: church polity! They discuss why the time was right for Coastline to draft some church structure, how the process went, and most importantly, why it matters to us. This is a great conversation that really helps show that the governance here at Coastline has been developed with love and family in mind. We hope you enjoy!
Blueprints: A Church that Prays
Hunter talks to Michael Barker and Tiffany Adams about prayer at Coastline. They discuss what a praying church looks like, discuss when prayer became real for them, and give helpful advice for some of our Coastline family who are apprehensive about going up and asking for prayer after a service. Big thanks to Tiffany for talking to us, and make sure you look for her trading cards!
Blueprints: A Podcast Primer
We're excited to talk all things Blueprints, which is our new teaching series at Coastline where we're looking at the Bible's wisdom and guidance in building a church. Shawn, Garrick, and Hunter talk about why this matters now, what is to come in this series, and the hope that we all have for our Coastline family as we talk about things that we definitely need to hear as a congregation.
Jesus: Forever
Buckle up! Hunter sits down with family theologian Andrew Faris to talk about Jesus forever. Like the conversations before, this one places Jesus in time and space, namely the eternal space. We ask and answer questions about the rapture, the book of Revelation, common terms you hear when talking about the end times, and of course... R.E.M and Wilco. This is a FEAST of a conversation and we really hope you enjoy it!
Jesus: Today
We're so excited to bring you the second conversation in our new series, Jesus: Yesterday, Today, and Forever. Hunter sits down with Dr. Jeannine Hanger to talk about some of the "I Am" statements of Jesus in the Gospel of John. These statements are Jesus talking to his followers in their today (when the Gospels were written) and our today (2023), so we not only talk historical context but also how these things matter to us now. There is so much good stuff in this episode, including the answer to the age old question: Who would in a fist fight between Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John.
We hope you enjoy it!
Jesus: Yesterday
Welcome to a brand new series here on the Coastline Covenant Podcast! We're mirroring our teaching series Jesus: Yesterday, Today, and Forever by taking a look each of the "times" (yesterday, today, and forever) and trying to see Jesus within them in ways we maybe hadn't been able to before. This first episode is incredibly special, as we have Dr. Charlie Trimm on the podcast talking about Jesus yesterday, or in the Old Testament. To try and summarize this conversation would be impossible, but just know we cover everything from Lord of the Rings to Moses to the end times. If that doesn't sound exciting, I don't know what does!
