Strike 3 Podcast w/CB, ENak, & Trav

By Colin Brown

This podcast is for Umpires, coaches, and fans alike. The rules of baseball are integral to playing, coaching and officiating the game. Sports rule books often seem as if they are written in a dead language. We’re going help break down baseball rules in an easy, understandable, and entertaining manner. From little league to the majors, with an emphasis on NCAA. However, this is not just a rules show. We’ll talk about leadership, fitness, nutrition, and most everything else (except religion and politics). You can expect quality information, fun guests, and an overall good time.

S5:E2: Baseball Rules and John Ottavino

S5:E2: Baseball Rules and John Ottavino

One of the primary functions of a baseball umpire is the enforcement of the rules of the game. Today, CB, E-Nak and Trav meet with John Ottavino, a self-made baseball rules expert (our definition).

John publishes a free daily email, "Baseball Rule of the Day." This mail list is available to anyone who asks. Currently, there are hundreds of umpires, across the USA, and abroad, who subscribe to John's list. We talk to Mr Ottavino about the origins of the mail list, from a small local distribution, to the growth to today, and some of the interesting rules/interpretations.

You can subscribe to John's free "Baseball Rule of the Day," email list just by asking - j.ottavino@att.net

S2:E16 - Fall Baseball and Umpire Development

S2:E16 - Fall Baseball and Umpire Development

In today's episode we are joined by our friends and mentors, Gary DiFabio and Jeff Henrichs. Gary is a 15 year NCAA veteran who works most of the D-I conferences on the West Coast, along with D-II and some Junior College conferences. Jeff is a 28 year NCAA vet, with 8 College World Series rings. We examine the purpose, and importance, of Fall Baseball from the perspective of the schools, assigners and the individual umpires.

We discuss the importance of Fall Baseball to an umpire's development, and it's relationship to the umpires' assigning association(s). We note some evidence of changing attitudes in some umpires' attitudes regarding Fall Ball, including compensation.

The topic of the difficulties observed on the difficulties staffing fall baseball scrimmages by the lower levels (non-D-I) of collegiate, and all of the high school levels, is also explored. Is it a combination of effects that are limiting the numbers? (e.g. post-COVID pandemic reluctance, season burn-out, lack of compensation)

Please join us in welcoming Gary DiFabio and Jeff Henrichs!

S2:E8 - The Return of Baseball in California

Today we are discussing the return of high school and youth baseball in California, after the shutdown of all scholastic sports after March 12, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was a very long layoff, for everyone, from players, coaches, to fans, and umpires. We talk about, not only, the return of high school baseball, but of the sudden policy reversal, to allow all high school (and youth) sports to return, virtually, at once! The impact on sports officials, and multi-sport athletes is discussed, including how this emphasizes the shortage of officials in all sports! E-Nak shares the "joys" of umpire assigning with the extremely short preparation time in advance of the actual start of the season. We also talk about our personal returns to the baseball diamond. CB & E-Nak were fortunate to share their return to the field on the same crew, and Trav's first games are coming soon! Enjoy the show! We would love to hear from you.
