Comic Book Squares

By Comic Book Squares

Welcome to Comic Book Squares! We're 4 guys - Ben, Mike, Paul and Shane - talking comic books with a focus on independent creators. In each weekly episode, we're either reviewing comic books from small and independent publishers or interviewing indie comic creators. Our reviews dig into both the art and the story, and our take on the issue as a whole.

Indie Comic Book Review - Blowtorch Bad Roads

Indie Comic Book Review - Blowtorch Bad Roads

Time for another #indiecomicreview! One of our fans/listeners/watchers was rather tenacious in getting us to review his new comic (Oct. '23) - Blowtorch Bad Roads from Page1 Comics! Thank you for being persistent! Blowtorch Bad Road's first issue is a great entry into a gritty, John Wick-esque type of comic! This black-and-white issue has some really great artistry and the b/w nature really fits with this story. The cover is truly well done and an eye-catcher! We won't give much away here -- just get your hands on it! Looking forward to the next issue! Description: Blowtorch Bad Roads is the bare-knuckled, rough and tumble, gritty, bloody crime thriller you've been waiting for! 🚨 See all Comic Book Squares links here: https://linktr.ee/comicbooksquares.

Comic Creator Interview - Chiral Comics (Kang Jing & Api Ngo)

Comic Creator Interview - Chiral Comics (Kang Jing & Api Ngo)

We had the awesome opportunity to visit with and interview Chiral Comic's creator Kang Jing (KJ) and co-writer/editor Api Ngo  @ThatChineseHistoryGuy  (on YouTube) all the way from Singapore! Interviewing at the same time - but technically on different days - was similar to time-travel -- or something else conceptually trippy. We had a blast learning about wuxia (which literally means "martial arts and chivalry," is a genre of Chinese fiction concerning the adventures of martial artists in ancient China) and how this dynamic duo ended up working together! We hope you enjoy learning about this potentially different perspective/experience in the comic creator domain. And we HIGHLY recommend their comics! Zhao Vol. 1 was intriguing, has a story that grabs, and is visually bold and vivid! While their recent Kickstarter has already completed, they ask that you visit their website, check them out, and order a copy of this smart, large graphic novel! ➡️ https://chiralcomics.storenvy.com/ Kang Jing (KJ) - Creator/Writer/Artist/Letterer Api Ngo - Co-Writer/Editor Alan Bay - Colorist Kang Jing (KJ) is a Singaporean Graphic Novelist and the visionary behind Chiral Comics. KJ entered into the industry in 2019 with the release of his debut comic series, “The World My Arena”, which was successfully funded through Kickstarter. Garnering substantial attention, the martial arts series received coverage in local media outlets such as justsaying.ASIA and CNA Lifestyle, and adapted into animated videos (ComicVid by VividThree Productions). In 2022, KJ was invited as an ambassador artist for Singapore's inaugural Comic Embassy, an initiative co-organised by SG Cartoon Resource Hub and NAFA International. Later on, KJ had the privilege to adapt the autobiography of CPT Ho Weng Toh, Singapore's last World War II Flying Tiger, into a comic series published in the local newspaper. On the global stage, KJ’s works have been featured in internationally published comic anthologies, including the Covid Chronicles by Graphic Mundi, which was named by The Washington Post as one of the "Best Graphic Novels of 2021". He was also announced as the interior comic artist for Týr, internationally renowned Faroese folk metal band, to be published in 2024. Currently, he is working on his latest project, Zhao, a wuxia graphic novel steeped in historical fiction. ➡️ https://chiralcomics.com/ ⬅️ 🚨 See all Comic Book Squares links here: https://linktr.ee/comicbooksquares.

Comic Creator Interview - Laurie Calcaterra - Path of the Pale Rider

Comic Creator Interview - Laurie Calcaterra - Path of the Pale Rider

We had the incredible opportunity to interview #indiecomic creator, Laurie Calcaterra, creator of Path of the Pale Rider, late last year and while this interview is a bit longer than most, it's well worth it! Path of the Pale Rider was truly delightful to get into and we cannot recommend this series enough! We were lucky enough to read issues 1-3, and this comic has extremely high potential for a BIG future in our humble opinion. This fresh take on the "zombie apocalypse" genre is an emotional and relateable ride! Not just a comic, POTPR has riddles, short films, and a choose-your-own-adventure book. There are multiple ways to participate in the story. Sign up for social media to stay in the link for the next project, issue 4 completion and trade paperback coming early 2024. ➡️ www.pathofthepalerider.com ⬅️ Laurie: linktr.ee/LaurieCalcaterra Marco Defillo: @marco_defillo_art on instagram Matt Chambers: @roninh5x on instagram 🚨 See all Comic Book Squares links here: https://linktr.ee/comicbooksquares.

Indie Comic Book Review - Hunt. Kill. Repeat.

Indie Comic Book Review - Hunt. Kill. Repeat.

We had the pleasure of reviewing Hunt. Kill. Repeat. from  @madcavestudios  and Mark London recently.

This comic was truly well done. We were all caught up in this story that delves into a time when the Greek Gods have come to the land of man to wreak havoc and teach the technology-loving humans a lesson about who to worship. While the story doesn't fit neatly into a better-known Greek myth, the creators did a fantastic job of weaving in traditional Greek mythology beats with their unique take on the ongoing battle between Gods and humans. Let us know what you think in the comments!

This comic, and most of the comics we review, can be found on  @GlobalComix  🤩

Description: It’s Kill Bill meets Clash of the Titans in Hunt. Kill. Repeat. The all-new, action-packed series by Mark London (Battlecats). When the Greek gods invade Earth, society is quickly forced to comply with their new rulers. However, one god, Artemis, rejects her brethren’s ideology and has found solace in the love of a mortal. When she is called to Olympus to answer for her betrayal, the gods strip away her godly powers and leave her for dead. Now, ten years later, Artemis is on a quest for revenge to confront her father, Zeus, for taking away everything she ever loved.

Comic Creator Interview - Alex Moore & David Hazan

Comic Creator Interview - Alex Moore & David Hazan

Glamour. Glitz. Assassins!

Our next guests have brought all that and more to the comics scene with their new series from Scout Comics, "Death Drop: Drag Assassin"!

Squares Ben and Shane talk to comic book artist Alex Moore and comic book writer David Hazan about "Death Drop" as well as mixing crime noir with drag aesthetics, whether or not publishers are moving away from continuing series in favor of trade paperbacks/graphic novels, and Alex accidentally happening upon an "Eyes Wide Shut" style party!

Here's the official description for "Death Drop: Drag Assassin":

"Death Drop uses her skills to pick up the scent of the missing Lunaira Sun, at the insistence of their drag mother, Mother Henny. What she finds is a trail of corpses robbed of their faces, a leather-clad killer hell-bent on revenge, and an enigmatic and terrifying queen from Mother Henny’s past. To make matters worse, Death Drop can’t shake the feeling that the specter of the assassin mentor she exposed and left for dead years ago is now haunting her every step.

"The search for a connection between these events will take Death Drop from Mother Henny’s Club, Posterior Delusions, through the streets and back-alleys of the gayborhood, to the world beyond. As her past and present collide in a deadly confrontation, Death Drop will be forced to grapple with the idea that escaping from your past and overcoming it are two very different things …"

Comic Creator Interview - Jordan Hart

Comic Creator Interview - Jordan Hart

The effects of many chronic diseases are often unseen, so what if there was a superhero who was invulnerable to physical harm but had to fight to stay alive because of his own body?

That's the premise of the comic book miniseries "Ripple Effects," and we're excited to talk to the series creator and writer Jordan Hart! We talk to Jordan about this series, his own battle with the incurable blood-clotting disease thrombophilia, having to choose what to trim out of lengthy scripts, and much more.

Here's the official description of "Ripple Effects":

"In a world that is no stranger to superheroes, George Gibson is invulnerable to physical harm but fights every day to stay alive. Suffering from an acute case of type 1 diabetes, his invincibility is offset by a defective pancreas that must be monitored and treated daily. This incurable disease makes George's body both his greatest strength and his eternal weakness.

"What sets this series apart is a positive, person-first representation about life with a chronic disease ... which just so happens to also include superhuman abilities. But, Ripple Effects isn't just a story about a character with an incurable disease. It’s also a thrilling and relevant superhero tale that touches on the difficulty of finding a work/life balance, the class struggles and economic inequality experienced by many in our nation, and the desire to help others during trying times."

You can learn more about "Ripple Effects" at https://fanbasepress.com/index.php/publishing/comics/ripple-effects.

Comic Creator Interview - Sarah Gailey & Liana Kangas

Ever wished someone would combine the movies "Se7en" and "Elysium"? Well our next guests managed to take the concept and dial it up to 11!

Writer Sarah Gailey and artist Liana Kangas join us to talk about their Boom! Studios comic book series "Know Your Station." Sarah has written comics such as "Eat the Rich," "Steven Universe," and "The Vampire Slayer." Liana has done artwork for comics such as "Star Wars Adventures," "Where We Live," and "Archie Comics’s Return of Chilling Adventures in Sorcery."

We also chat about wizard curses, comic book lettering, and rich people in space. And Ben and Shane laugh a lot because that's what they do.

Here's the official description for "Know Your Station":

"The wealthiest people in the solar system abandoned the Earth for a private sanctuary in space, leaving the rest of us to die amidst cataclysmic climate change. Comic Creator Interview - Michael Tanner and François Vigneault

Stop playing "High on Life" right now and check out comic series "Orcs in Space"!

From the mind of "High on Life" creator and "Rick and Morty" co-creator Justin Roiland, "Orcs in Space" is a raucous, hilarious sci-fi tale that at its heart is about finding your place in the galactigon.

In this episode, we were lucky enough to be joined by "Orcs in Space" co-writer Michael Tanner and artist François Vigneault. They share the creative process behind the series; the deeper meanings hidden behind the comedy; and the pains of contacting every comic shop in North America to generate pre-orders.

"Orcs Space" was written by Michael Tanner, Rashad Gheith, Abed Gheith, and Justin Roiland, with art by François Vigneault and colors by DJ Chavis. Here is the official description:

"Gor, Kravis, and Mongtar are three Orcs trying to survive while on the run from everything and everyone on their home world. Comic Creator Interview - Nick Bryan

Comic Creator Interview - Nick Bryan

It's time to raise the dead and eat wings!

That's actually sort of the premise of the comic by our next guest, Nick Bryan. In this episode, we chat with him about his series "Death of a Necromancer" as well as his experience doing comic conventions and crowdfunding, and finding photos of geese.

Here's the official description of "Death of a Necromancer":

"Death of a Necromancer #1 is the first of a new four-part story by writer Nick Bryan (FairyFare, And It Snowed), artist Robert Ahmad (Headless, Corollary), colourist David Cooper (House of Sweets, Alex Automatic) and letterer DC Hopkins (Nocterra, Star Trek) asking the big questions, such as – Without death, what truly matters? What’s more important – personal survival or community?

"And, of course – can even a necromancer die?  "When Ralph Foster gets a job as head chef for Deadless Chicken, a new takeaway shop in his lifelong hometown of Tibbin, he doesn’t expect it to demand much of him. Until he dies in an unfortunate accident on the way out of the interview, only to find he… still has the job?

"Because shop owner Dr Victoria Hedgewood is a necromancer, and the chickens out back aren’t just a source of tasty wings. Before they’re southern-fried, she sacrifices them to her dark god to raise departed locals from the dead – as long as their family and friends can afford her reasonable fee."

We traveled halfway around the world for this episode!

OK, actually we just interview someone who is halfway around the world from us - Anas Abdulhak! Anas is the creator and writer of comic books such as "Eleutheromania" and "The Alpha Council," as well as upcoming titles "Etheres" and "Objects in the Mirror."

We love Anas' willingness to try new things with the comics medium, whether it be sequential art as prose or exploring the politicization of superheroes. His are stories not be missed!  "Objects in the Mirror" is launching a crowdfunding campaign soon on Zoop, and you can learn more here: https://zoop.gg/c/objectsinthemirror. Here's the official description:
