In this episode I do a compare and contrast between an honest and transparent sharing of an established publisher who got caught in a helpful content snare and my analysis of sites that I consulted on before that led me to discover what was the culprit.
Spoiler alert.
The experience and my analysis lined up perfectly.
Then I shared my own examination of the site aided by Google LLM. And then a path to recovery but not by undoing what is there but by getting the site to be classified as a specific type of site that by all experiences is exempt from HC rules.

Today I'm going to a new hunch about the volatility in search results as measured by the SEO weather tools like Semrush and others. SEO tools that measure the volatility within the results on a daily basis.
Conventional wisdom would say the times when the volatility is high is NOT the time to take measurements with SEO tool that use correlational math - like Cora SEO software.

SEO Testing - A Reality Check - S4, Episode 48
This week I am sharing a very sensitive topic about SEO testing. At least, sensitive to me.
Publishing a test and claiming it did something matters. There are protective measures in SEO testing as I learned it -
1. the test set up
2. the peer review using known search engine and indexation behavior to ensure that the test was indeed TESTING the hypothesis
3. a conclusion indicating if results were clear, absent or mixed aka inconclusive
It is the responsibility of the seo testing community to protect the trust we have developed over the past 10 years of testing. Without it, why would anyone believe what we share?

Welcome to Season 4 Episode 24 of Confessions of an SEO
Episode 2 of Confessions of an SEO Mountain Edition 2024.
This week brought my voice back and the jet lag induced exhaustion seems to be behind me.
While I was sleeping it off seems like the world kind of got a little interested in my theory that sites that were hit by the 2023 September HCU after seeing impressions increase like crazy in the spring/summer AND that were using TOC links on all their content - was due to the canonical attribution system not working - or not working for a while.
An unintended side-effect was the number of assumptions in the industry about the transparency (or lack thereof) shining through many of the objections to the possibility that the canonical attribution system either is or has been uncoupling jump links from the listed canonical.
Some even just focused on ONE THING - namely the URL with hashtags. Jump links have hashtags as to other html features - languages, comments etc
Sitelinks are a display feature in SERPs as a visual display of the TOC jumplinks. The fact they CAN appear in SERPS does not provide proof that the canonical attribution isn't broken.
