Hurdles Off The Track

In this episode of Core Conversations, hosts Cortlyn Raynes and Haley Hasty, second year DPT students, join guest Sydnée Jacques, M.Ed. for a discussion on black athlete identity and racism in sports. Sydnée is a former collegiate track and field athlete from Temple University, where she received her BA in Psychology and a Masters of Education in Counseling. She currently works as a learning specialist at Temple University, integrating her passion for helping student athletes navigate challenges on the field and inside the classroom. Listen in as they discuss the latest in the 2021 Olympic trials, navigating injuries and setbacks facing student athletes, and how educators and physical therapists can go the extra mile to make connections with their athletes and patients. As always, Cortlyn, Haley, and Sydnée wrap up the episode by reflecting on what’s good in life. Check out the links below for further perspectives on the intersection of discrimination and athletic identity.

In this episode of Core Conversations, host Justus Norman, second year DPT student, joins UF Department of Physical Therapy Program Director Dr. Mark Bishop, PT, PhD, FAPTA for an honest discussion about the recent initiatives within the program that aim to tackle the lack of diversity, Dr. Bishop’s personal journey to pursue anti-racism, and the balance between personal and professional expectations in addressing social justice issues. Dr. Bishop offers two book recommendations, White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo and So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo, which you can find and purchase from a Black owned bookstore here. Justus and Dr. Bishop also discuss how the program handled similar situations of racially-charged public unrest in previous years before the formation of the DEI Committee. The two reflect on how physical therapists can take a more active approach as professionals in rooting out injustice in healthcare, and agree that advocacy within the field is crucial for long-term change. Finally, Justus ends the episode by asking the signature final question: What’s good?

The Letter

The Letter

In June of 2020, following months of social unrest in the wake of a global pandemic and a string of highly public racial injustices and murders, second-year Doctor of Physical Therapy student Justus Norman wrote an open letter condemning his program's idle silence. In this episode, classmates Monique Deveaux and Ally Marcy join Justus to discuss the personal and professional impacts that this letter created within the program. Questions are raised about what it means to be an ally, how students can contribute to dismantling the racial disparities found in academia and healthcare, and why it is so important to initiate these core conversations.
