Around this time of the season, we are enjoying the green - yet waiting for autumn. The rain or lack thereof allows us to notice what flowers are the true soldiers of the garden with or without rain. I chose the poem "The Source" by Isla Paschal Richardson, as it speaks to what many gardens share with us right now. Thank you for being there and being patient with me. Jamaica Kincaid is an author whose writings are a part of my book family. One of my favorites is My Garden (Book). The excerpt I read truly struck a cord and tugged at my heartstrings. Certain authors really help center my thoughts. Kathy Jentz, Washington Gardener Magazine, and I co-authored a book that is available for pre-sale ordering. The book, The Urban Garden: 101 Ways to Grow Food and Beauty In the City has truly been a labor of love and quite the learning experience. Episode 26 - Joseph and his Comic Book Guide to Growing Food
Joseph Tychonievich and Liz Anna Kozik have created a book for this time. During this month dedicated to Kid's gardening, The Comic Book Guide to Growing Food is one that needs consideration. I personally see this as a book that will appeal to young people and perhaps encourage them to see what it is all about. So many times books on gardening are very "adult-like" or too juvenile. This book capture s many different generations as well as types of gardeners.   The poem, Dig In by George Shannon was quite appropriate as we want to encourage our young people to dig into the earth and discover the joy of gardening. Episode 37 - Garden Thoughtfully with Heather Andrews, GardenComm, International, and Giving Thanks...
Looking for local information about pollinators? check out my blogpost about Cavano's Perennials. They are known in the Mid Atlantic for quality plant material. Located in Kingsville, Maryland, the beautiful drive makes it worthwhile for contactless shopping after ordering online.  GardenComm, International (formerly known as GardenComm) has been a part of my life since 2015. As a budding Garden Writer, and communicator, the relationships I have been wonderful. Meeting people in this industry that I love has been quite an asset in my personal development to share the love of gardening.  The conferences I have attended, the regional meetings, and community connectivity to other people in horticulture have allowed me to tap into a wealth of resources. If you are interested in growing your voice as a garden communicator or know of someone else who might want to expand their circle of like-minded garden communicators,  check out GardenComm. One of our newest members is my guest today. Heather Andrews, Garden Thoughtfully, is all about Pollinator gardens. She has the perfect gift for the new or seasoned gardener in your life. Enjoy my chat with Heather, one of GardenComm's newest members. A Thanksgiving Garden is a poem that is posted in my office and is quite meaningful - especially at this time of the year. As we approach Thanksgiving, I am Thankful for the Garden Community. As I grow and share my voice, each Gardener I meet is a seed in my garden plot of life. Happy Thanksgiving to each of you and to my listeners as well. Thank you for being a part of my growth. I ask that you follow me... With two seasons to go, A Year at Brandywine Cottage really is an unexpected gift to gardeners anywhere. Episode 32 - Autumnal Bliss, Conversations with Rob Cardillo, and Robert Frost
Picture a walk in the woods at this time of the year. Noticing the leaves that have fallen from the trees above. In the quiet of the morning, I consider the sound of the leaves gracing the grounds a song to greet the day. Like colorful chimes releasing kisses to make the walk quite the pleasure. I have to catch myself as I lift my head to receive each and every one. To read my reflections on the kaleidoscope of color, click here. Rob Cardillo - Photographer Extraordinaire. Episode 26 - Lady Farmer...Slow Living Locally
I first met Lady Farmer at Monticello a few years ago. It was their initial launch and I was impressed by the mission as well as their purpose.  Existing in a slow, measured way can be fulfilling and educational. How many times since we have been unintentionally pausing have you figured out that patience is quite the virtue? I continue to follow them online and their staying power speaks volumes. THIS was the year I wanted to attend the Slow Living Conference. Now that we are in this period of unintentional pausing, the opportunity to really pay attention to what their mission is, what they say, and more is certainly more clear right now. From their book, online yoga, and more, their connections to just a slower, more mindful way of living are authentic.  To find out more click Lady Farmer. Hope to see you at the Retreat! Episode 23 - Resetting on the Maryland Legacy Wine Trail, Kim Rush Lynch and The Face of Fall
Maryland offers so many different agricultural opportunities. I recently explored two Maryland Wineries. Since the opportunity to #resetrenewrestore in Europe was not possible,  experiencing Maryland as a local has been my mission. As 2020 makes us settle into our perspective places and not travel abroad,  getting to know the local agriculture community has been quite an adventure. A few weekends ago,  I spent a little time at Robin Hill Farm and Vineyards. Susan and Bob were the best hosts for a Friday night small group gathering for wine tasting. I wrote a review on the blog. You can read it here. Let me tell you, writing and a glass or two of Rooted is a terrific way to embrace the flavor, as well as the beauty of Maryland Agriculture.  I also discovered Romano Winery and Vineyards.  Jo-Anne was another welcoming presence as well. There is something about a Maryland Welcome that simply makes you want to linger. Click to find out about Robin Hill and Romano Winery,  To read my blog post, click here. Kim Rush Lynch is a force in Maryland Agriculture. She is supportive and knowledgeable about the many programs, opportunities, and more. Her excitement about what Prince Georges County offers is reflected in her enthusiasm as she shares a bit about what she does. Episode 22 - Let It Be, Edwina Von Gal and Birds
Let it be is all I could say as this period of unintentional pausing has made all of us pay attention. Going out into the garden every day to weed or water was less important. Admiring the beauty of the garden in real-time was a gift. The opportunity to witness trees burst into bloom or plants come to life has been amazing. If it were any other year, I would have to make time to weed, make time to capture a few blooms and have very little time actually enjoying the beauty that surrounds me. I wrote about this on my blog recently as I realized sometimes, you have to Let It Be I recently heard Edwina Von Gal speak about the virtues of nature on a fantastic webinar shared by  The Garden Conservancy. The Garden Conservancy has introduced informative virtual programming this year. Edwina was one of the guests who I consider a gift to my world. Episode 21 - England On My Mind, Carex Travel and Thoughts on Garden Traveling
Last year I was oh so excited about my trip to Paris.  Why? I included England on this journey and I took my Aunt who was still absorbing the loss of her husband.  Most passionate gardeners know that the garden is a healer and I can not tell you how much I miss it this year. I did share a visit to Chiswick on my blog. You can read about it here Carex travel is a boutique travel company owned and operated by Carolyn Mullet, a well-known garden designer in the DC Metropolitan area and also known for her fabulously well-curated tours to the gardens of Piet Oudolf. Episode 20 - Self Care, Dr. Sandra Lewis and Dreaming of Travel
Sharing a few thoughts on the importance of Self Care sets the stage for this episode. As I talk to more and more people, we are all in a state of unintentional existence as we continue to unintentionally pause. This made me check in with Dr. Sandra Lewis, a friend, a confidant, and just the right person to help us see why we need each other, the realization that we have been underwater and connectivity. To find out more about Dr. Lewis book, click Life in 4 Part Harmony Travel. A beautiful poem by Edna St. Vincent Millay. This poem reminded me of my Eurostar adventure last year between Paris and England with my Aunt. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to have spent some memorable moments with her as we galavanted around Paris and England.  Those are unique memories that I will cherish. Even now, I am dreaming of a future trip or two back to my beloved Paris, perhaps an opportunity to linger in more English gardens, revisit The Cotswold's,  or perhaps attending an organized tour with a few friends. Are you dreaming of traveling when we can move about freely again? European travel can often lead to cherished opportunities with friends. I personally cannot wait to travel again. In the meantime... Episode # 18 - Life Imitating the Garden, Gardening with Friends and Friendship
There was a conversation on the tongue of a few folks about the transparency Mrs. Michelle Obama. She shared on her new podcast feelings of being a bit low. Some would call it depression. To see all of your hard work for good disappear before your eyes. I would be devastated. To take off the cape that many women wear is admirable. It is OK to not be okay...ask for help if needed. I personally admire her ease in being transparent and welcome it in the world we live in today. Would any of us freely admit we were a bit depressed if asked? Probably not. I wrote an open letter to Mrs. Obama, sharing how the garden imitates life. Sometimes gardening conversations help us figure things out. Especially when you garden with friends. Here is a link to my blog post: Life Imitates the Garden - Cheer Up Mrs. Obama Speaking of gardening with friends, Peggy Riccio is my collaborative partner on Gardens 'n Plants. We talk about gardens, plants and more. Peggy is truly a friend and a quiet force to be reckoned with. Episode 15 - The garden in the morning, Mrs. Know It All and Mary Oliver
Throwback Thursday reminded me of a book that is no longer available in hard copy (but worth finding in a used book store). Eat Your Roses by Denise Schreiber is a kitchen keeper. Utilizing the things we grow in the garden which we might not consider eating, Denise offers us simple recipes in a small wrapper. St. Lynne's Press puts the best information in small books with some pretty cool authors as well. While this book is no longer in print, it is available as an ebook from Amazon.  You can purchase it here. I call Denise Schreiber a friend, a dear friend at that. We had chat recently filled with laughter and chocked full of information. Please enjoy this conversation from this woman who has had a career in horticulture, is a terrific speaker, instructor, garden communicator, and most importantly, a sincere friend. Another book that is a necessity on my shelves is anything from Mary Oliver. Why I Wake Early by Mary Oliver has won many awards.  I encourage you to read and connect with the earth via her words. You can purchase any of her books on Amazon by clicking here Follow me: Https://www.cottageinthecourt.com...Instagram and Twitter: @cottageincourt...Facebook: CottageInTheCourt, and sometimes on Medium: Cottage In The Court If you live in the DMV and want to know what's happening locally and in our gardens, follow the collaborative podcast by two garden communicators, Peggy Riccio and Teresa Speight. Episode 14 - Meditative Gardening, C. Colston Burrell and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
The Meditative Gardener - Cultivating Mindfulness of Body, Feelings, and Mind by Cheryl Wilfong it's a must-read for those who are considering mindfully gardening. What a wonderful guide book to look at engaging with the earth in a unique way. I share my thoughts on this book here. It was a pleasure to chat with  C. Colston Burrell. In my world, I have known him for quite a while. I heard him speak when I lived in Fredericksburg, Virginia..and hung on his every word.  When you hear words that mirror how you feel about the earth, you know you have found a kindred spirit. I reached out to him 15+ years later and after our initial chat, I knew my instincts were correct. He is a man of the earth and I am glad to know him. This is a man, I consider a friend. Enjoy a wonderful chat with C. Colston Burrell (I am the self-appointed Maryland C.C. Burrell Fan Club President. When you read his books or hear him speak, you will understand why!) Episode 13 - Hands In The Dirt Recap, Preston Montague and Thoughts on Gardening...
In honor of Juneteenth, I hosted a horticultural conversation with a few friends. I want to say Thank you to Abra Lee, Wambui Ipollito, Duron Chavis,  Eve Rickenbaker, and a special Thank You to Preston Montague. Sometimes, I play it safe, as I choose to not disturb the waters. Preston recognized my hesitation as he encouraged me to speak my mind, have my say, and uplift my voice as an African American. It was certainly an enlightening discussion...and we did not solve this problem by any means. The conversation continues and will for some time.  If you are involved as an entity in Horticulture, give us a chance, extend that opportunity, help us elevate our unheard voice. We do bring diversity and another perspective to the table...in more ways than one!  Thank you to those who listened and once again Thank you to my panelists! Preston Montague and I have been virtual friends for quite some time with the assistance of technology. I had no idea that he such a wonderful spirit, a beautiful drawl, and that his compassion is cautiously worn on his sleeve. Once he started speaking his truth, it was hard to end our conversation. With friends like these, I like to say...we will be chatting again! Listen to our conversation...it was a blast! Episode 11 - Secret Gardens in East Anglia, Kew - Wakehurst and Connecting with Nature
I decided to stop being selfish and share my review of Secret Gardens of East Anglia by Barbara Segall. During this period of unintentional pausing, I had time to focus on my dreams of visiting more English gardens. I cannot wait until we are free to travel safely again. Barbara Segall is a fellow GardenComm member and has written several books. I had the pleasure of chatting with her when we both attended the Garden Bloggers Fling in Texas. While there was simply not enough time to catch up with her last year when I went to England, hopefully, we can do so in the future. Pour a cup of tea and read about a few fabulous gardens. Click here to read my review. For those that know me, you know  The Virtual Chelsea FlowerShow captured my attention. I love the diversity of the English garden and all that it has to offer. My trip to England last year was brief and I can't wait to return. Tops on my list was a visit to the RBG Kew Gardens - London, the Physic Garden and more.  With so many places to visit in England, a new place is on my list. The RBG Kew Gardens - Wakehurst. Did you know Kew has several locations?? Allow me to introduce someone who I can call a friend - Ed Ikin, Deputy Director, Head of Landscape, Horticulture, and Research at RBG KEW, Wakehurst. What a delightful conversation we shared over a cup of tea. I look forward to visiting RBG Kew- Wakehurst in the future. Episode 10 - A Lifelong Journey in Gardening and Gardening Smart!
#gardeningwhileaging is easier than ever with this wonderful book by Toni Gattone, The Lifelong Gardener - Garden With Ease & Joy At Any Age is a wonderful book written by Toni Gattonne ad published by Timber Press. Finding a book that escorts you into a world of possibilities is always a good thing. Gardenista - The Definitive Guide to StylishIutdoor Spaces is a terrific tour guide as you begin to consider enhancing your garden. I recently reviewed this awesome book on my website Click here to find out my thoughts.  I had the pleasure of catching up with John Magee. I met John in 2017 at the Garden Bloggers Fling. His business focuses on using native plants in the landscape. John Magee has specific ideas on why we need to embrace natives and shared this concept with me. Episode 6 - Cultural Gardening - Healing and Heritage Foods
I recently reviewed a terrific book called, Working The Roots - 400 Years of Traditional African American Healing by Michele E. Lee. During this time of unintentional pausing, we have become food-focused. From growing what we can in our own yards to even remembering what roots, leaves, and herbs were traditionally used to heal our bodies. The ancestors have always know how to tap into nature when resources were unavailable or lean. It is a terrific book that will bring back memories of discussions with the Elders. I posted this on my blog.  John Manirakiza is a man we need to know and watch, right here in the DMV. The Heritage Food Project at the University of the District of Columbia is being recognized for the good programs they are growing. Connecting the immigrant community with the foods they were accustomed to eating in their homeland is such a good thing. The outreach that this program is doing, not only at UDC but in the DMV community is a wonderful thing. As John continually spreads his net of goodness to meet the needs of the community, I wanted to share a conversation I had with him recently. Episode 5 - Celebrating National Public Gardens - Loving at Longwood
Celebrating National Public Gardens was quite different this year. If nothing else, it has helped us realize the role they play in our lives. Whether we visit for quiet time, inspiration, or reliving a memory, National Public Gardens has affected many of our lives. Even as the buildings on some sites are closed, parts f the grounds are closed in other gardens. If you are planning a visit, be sure to call, and or check the website first. As some States are re-opening, there are sure to be some National  Public Gardens opening as well.  I had the opportunity of speaking with Sharon Loving, Vice President of Horticulture at Longwood Gardens. If you are not familiar with Longwood Gardens, you should really take the time while we are pausing and explore their website. Chock full of information and definitely designed to make you want to visit today! Unfortunately, the gates are temporarily shuttered...but when the time comes and we can move about freely, make a date at Longwood. I just might see you there! If you want to  visit a few National Public Gardens, locally here are a few suggestions of books you might find interesting: Maryland's Public Gardens and Parks by Barbara Glickman Capital Splendor: Gardens & Parks in Washington, D.C. GARDEN WALKS In The Mid-Atlantic States by Marina Harrison and Lucy D. Rosenfeld Terrific books to refresh your memory or learn something new. Episode 4- Afro-Asian-American Cooking and The Chinese Kitchen Garden...Celebrating Culturally Growing
I recently shared a terrific book on my blog, Between Harlem and Heaven, Afro- Asian- American Cooking for Big Nights, Weeknights, and Every Day, a collaboration between J.J. Johnson and Alexander Smalls with Veronica Chambers. This is not just a cookbook, but a melting pot of cultural stories with the advice of "just try the sauces on everything". This is a must-have as you begin to grow this season and celebrate the diversity found in the garden. You can read this review on my blog, https://www.cottageinthecourt.com.  As I focus on cooking and growing, it is the perfect time to chat with a friend that understands cultural cooking. The Chinese Kitchen Garden - Growing techniques and family recipes from a classic cuisine by Wendy Kiang-Spray is another book to reference. A local gardener in the DMV, Wendy has such a delightful story to share.  The story of how this book came about is quite touching. Wendy shares moments with her Dad in the garden. Together they sowed seeds of unspoken love, trials, and truth of immigrant survival. Wendy also shares her perspective on engaging with the earth for beginning as well as seasoned gardeners. Published by Timber Press it is a story, a resource, and more than worthy of being in your kitchen. A Timber Press book is always a good thing to have - especially when the topic is gardening! Episode 3 - History, Humility, Homeschooling, and Hope - An African American Experience
April has been such a busy month. Even as it is about to end, there is so much more to share. Did you know this is Kid's gardening month? If you have never heard of Kidsgardening.org, it is definitely a resource worth checking out. There are options for engaging children in connecting with the earth as an educator, a homeschooler, or as a parent. Ideas such as making botanical paper (a great gift) and gardening with scraps can add the chance for one on one engagement with your child. What a great way to make a memory! To find out more about this organization, click here Speaking of homeschooling, Paula Penn-Nabrit homeschooled her children due to unfortunate circumstances of non-acceptance. Not being deterred, Paula and her husband Charles, connected with the surrounding community and raised Ivy League Twins. She has written several books on this topic and more. Sharing her story hopefully will serve as a bit of hope for others who are balancing the art of "unexpected homeschooling".  Paula has a unique perspective on life, family, and homeschooling - even as a business owner, working full-time, and of course, learning how to garden with family as well as in her community. This strong African-American woman is a terrific example of a perennial in the g garden of life. Spring Episode 2 - Smart Gardening, Joy and Honoring National Poetry Month
What a windy day and certainly not a day to plant or transplant new plants. Gardening is a way of life for some and a new hobby for others as we practice "unintentional pausing"...I prefer this term over "Social Distancing". I took some time to consider what is in the news I am listening to, had a chat with a fellow Garden Communicator, Kim Roman, and wrote a little poem in honor of National Poetry Month. To find out more about the online classes Kim will be teaching her information is:  sfgkimroman@yahoo.com or her Facebook page:  Square Foot Gardening 4 U I hope to connect with you on my other social platforms:  https://www.cottageinthecourt.com (blog and website), twitter: @cottageincourt, Instagram: @cottageincourt, FB: Cottage In The Court I am also a Great Garden Speaker and would love to create conversations with your community group, garden club or sister circle.  Email me: teri@cottageinthecourt.com

Episode 1 - Celebrating Women's History Month
Slowing down whether we like it or not has it's virtues. The things we had placed on the back burner ever are now simmering on the front of the stove.  As a person with a creative mindset, this opportunity to pause has stirred up the mulch in my mind and a seed has started to sprout again.   Have you ever had a dream of speaking with someone you felt like you would be gardening buddies with? Well, I do all the time. Sometimes I am hesitant to ask just because. Fear of hearing No (FOHN)...I am working on this! I am on the second reading of an awesome book.  One day I  had the nerve to ask Jennifer Jewell, author, The Earth In Her Hands - 75 Extraordinary Women Working In the World of Plants to share a few moments with me. An event that I was looking forward to attending at the Smithsonian was postponed due to our National Emergency and Jennifer was one of the panelists. Not one to postpone joy, I knew that I  needed to meet her either in person or over the phone. Timber Press - THANK YOU !!! This is truly a winning book that everyone needs to read. It introduces us to a diverse group of real gardeners, REAL women who are involved in horticulture. I hope you enjoy our chat. I love poetry and I found a simple one that is shard after this conversation. Poetry, like the garden, makes life just a little more palatable. Go outside, go into the garden, make time to enjoy life, connect with nature and most importantly, try to safely enjoy this opportunity to pause...YOLO!
