This week we sit down with 23 year old still life painter and artist Lorena Levi explains her relationship with her process, choice of oil paint as her medium, and how her illness, cystic fibrosis informs the subject of her painting, the style and more broadly, her life. She tells Creating Waves about what moving away from London to Edinburgh meant to her and how to find a new form of independence and trust in new and old friends.

We speak to professional composer, vocalist and composer Ella Jarman Pinto during her lockdown in Cumbria. She was recently commissioned by BBC Radio 3 for ‘Postcards from Composers’ and has recently been described by Classic FM as ‘one of the UK’s most exciting music-makers’.  We get to know about Ella’s love of music and how commissioning for film differs from composing.

Multidisciplinary filmmaker Emily Badescu works for businesses who put ethics at the heart of their brand. Her works mainly span the fields of commercial and documentary. We touch on her latest work Nuestro Muro, a documentary focusing on the lives of a group of young migrants who have been brought together in Barcelona by Rebobinart, an urban art training programme that encourages self expression through graffiti.

Joyce is the creative director of Black On Black Creative, a creative agency that supports creatives of colour, and founder of Climate in Colour, focusing on bringing conversations of the intersection between climate change and social justice into the forefront of the media. She has also been accepted on a MRes + Phd at Cambridge University in Applying AI to Climate Change. We speak about her personal journey as well as shining a light on the effects of colonialism on climate change.

Kicking off the series, we speak to Robert and Muhiddin from World Aral Region Charity, a charity in Uzbekistan who engage in cultural and environmental initiatives with the people who live in the worst affected region of the Aral Sea. We dive into the causes of the disappearance of the lake, the changes to the landscape and implications of this and the mental and physical challenges this brings to those who live here such as depression and tuberculosis. We find out more about the creative opportunities WARC provides to young people  in Uzbekistan and end with learning about traditional Uzbek culture and food.
