Culture Gym - Season 2 Episode 4 - Dealing with Redundancy with Empathy

Culture Gym - Season 2 Episode 4 - Dealing with Redundancy with Empathy

With the businesses going into administration and liquidations in the news repeatedly at the moment, this week Carly and Gareth talk about redundancy and how to handle it with empathy, respect and trying to make the best of a bad situation. Outside of the current situation, redundancy is a natural part of the business cycle: not all redundancies occur because of businesses failing. In this case there is a real opportunity to turn redundancy into a positive, creating win-win outcomes, but only if redundancy planning is part of the business strategy. Tune in to find out more.

It's important to listen to employees and act on their input but is "employee voice" the right way to go about it? A more holistic approach is needed. It's challenging and complex, but if we don't accept that every single employee is different, with different needs and contributions to make then organisations are missing out on so much potential.

In this weeks show we look at why that is a mistake, how to develop emotional intelligence and how to apply it more effectively. We also discuss alexithymia and introduce the topic of genetics and its influence on culture.

Culture Gym - Episode 6 - Remote and Flexible Working

Culture Gym - Episode 6 - Remote and Flexible Working

The coronavirus pandemic has brought upheaval and disaster, but it has also brought huge opportunities. We discuss one of these on this week's show. The veil has been lifted on working from home or remote working. Many businesses have discovered the benefits for employees and themselves and are now considering reducing their office space as they move more people to permanent home-working. This is likely to be a revolution in the world of work, for the better as we discuss. The question is, if more of your workforce are working from home, how will that affect the culture of the organisation - the norms and standards of behaviour - and how will that affect the organisation as a whole. Leaders need to make deliberate efforts to ensure that these effects are deliberately managed and not just allowed to evolve. If you don't create your culture, someone else will, and you may not like what you end up with.

Culture Gym - Episode 4 - Neuroplasticity and Cultural Plasticity

Culture Gym - Episode 4 - Neuroplasticity and Cultural Plasticity

Not so long ago it was thought that after adolescence the brain was fixed, unable to adapt, only decline. We now know that's not true. It is constantly remodelling, creating new connections in response to new challenges and opportunities. In this weeks episode we discuss what this means. We also draw analogies with organisational culture - another entity that is often thought of as stable and difficult to change, but needn't be if it is exercised effectively.
