Katie Kelly, Paralympian, Advocate and Activist, founder of Sport Access Foundation

We are publishing this episode on December 3rd, the International Day of People with Disability, which for 2023 has the theme: "United in action to rescue and achieve the SDGs (sustainable development goals) for, with and by persons with disabilities". We are delighted to be chatting to someone who embodies that theme every day, Australian Paralympian and World Champion Katie Kelly, OAM.

Katie is the founder of the Sport Access Foundation, providing grants for young Australians living with a disability to improve their access to sport. Katie is also a Non-Executive Director for Achieve Australia, an Industry Fellow with Griffith University’s Disability Inclusive Council, a co-Patron of the Australian Deaf Games, and is a Facilitator for a Victoria University Sport Inclusion Project. Katie works as the Disability Engagement Manager for MEGT, an NFP providing apprenticeship and employment services.

And Katie's idea of being lazy is walking the Camino Trail...

Katie shares her story with us, her evolving condition (called Usher syndrome which is characterised by partial or total hearing loss and vision loss that worsens over time), her Olympic experiences, her calling to help others and what she thinks businesses and organisations can do to improve the experience and equity for disabled employees.

REPLAY: Didier Elzinga, CEO of Culture Amp

REPLAY: Didier Elzinga, CEO of Culture Amp

This week's Culture Makers episode is a replay of my 2019 (pre-pandemic!) interview with Didier Elzinga, CEO of Culture Amp a people and culture platform that helps companies around the world to gather insight and analytics on engagement and performance so that they can build and evolve high achieving teams.

So while a lot has changed in the world of work since this interview, I think you'll also hear that not a lot has changed when it comes to attitudes towards culture and there's still a lot of scope to do more! If anything, culture has become even more important since this interview.

Didier left a highly successful career in Hollywood to, in his own words, 'make a bigger dent on the universe' by building a global software company on a mission to create a better world of work.

Culture Amp now has offices around the world, a growing roster of clients and plenty of insights into what it actually means to create that better world of work. Culture Amp walks the talk when it comes to their own people and culture and Didier shares his unique insights on:

⚡ Being a culture-first company

⚡ How the company uses technology to build connections between its global workforce

⚡ On winning at culture - but doing it the right way

⚡ Shifting mindsets in business - the growing realisations that culture will kill if you get it wrong and that there is no finish line - culture is never 'done'

⚡ How knowledge is not enough and the work Culture Amp does in designing systems that support companies in being human

⚡ Why you can't copy culture

⚡ The idea of 'Peak Culture' and why it has to be OK to not always belong.

We had a fascinating conversation and you can find out more about Culture Amp here: https://www.cultureamp.com/

Géraldine Fauville, Assistant Professor in Education, Communication and Learning at the University of Gothenburg

Géraldine Fauville is Assistant Professor in Education, Communication and Learning at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. She specialises in research that focuses on the role that immersive technologies can play in promoting ocean and environmental literacies. Géraldine is currently engaged in a collaborative project with Stanford University researching the much talked about effects of Zoom fatigue - that is, the physical and emotional effects of video conferencing and what they might mean for our longer term relationship with the technology.

There is very little current and ongoing research into the impacts and implications of our new ways of working so it is important to get a baseline of understanding and then explore the different types of fatigue. If we are going to successfully create hybrid cultures with more flexible ways of working our understanding of how and why we use the tools we have available - and if they are the right tools - will need to improve. The research team has created the ZEF (Zoom exhaustion and fatigue) Scale and you can take the questionnaire here to find out your ZEF score while also contributing to the research.

Read more about the research here and get some tips on reducing your ZEF.

Karen Tobiasen, Transformer, Leader, Author and Coach

Karen Tobiasen, Transformer, Leader, Author and Coach

Karen shares incredible insights from a career that started out in nursing - where Karen gained a unique understanding of the human condition - and evolved into senior roles in HR, Culture and Transformation for organisations including SAP, Philips Lighting and Nordea. She has achieved incredible success through her people-centric approach to transformation and innovation and now Karen heads up her own practice, Breathing Business, to help organisations design and embed successful and sustainable transformation. She is also the author of the best selling book The Heart Revolution

I learnt a lot listening to Karen - in fact she left me lost for words at one point... which never happens!

"The shift from I to  we made SAP an amazing success and was one of the reasons I was there for 10 years."

This is the last episode of Season Two - thanks for listening and we'll be back in the first quarter of 2021 with more Culture Makers!
