#11 - Aseethe | Electrical Audio, Gear, and Doom
Todays guest is Brian Barr and Noah Koester of the Doom Metal band Aseethe. We discuss their gear, keeping relevant during a pandemic, and recording at Steve Albini's Electrical Audio studio.
Aseethe’s Throes is a work of corrosive beauty and colossal weight. The trio of guitarist/vocalist Brian Barr, drummer Eric Diercks, and bassist/vocalist Noah Koester craft tectonic slabs of doom through minimalist approaches to composition. Minutely selected textures built on simplistic, repetitive motifs become mountainous. With each cycle of repetition, their towering riffs, bludgeoning drums, and inhuman howls become increasingly hypnotic and reveal subtle intricacies. The recursive nature of their songs coupled with their glacial pacing make masterful use of restraint to create moments of genuine surprise. On Throes, these elements coalesce into songs as detailed as they are visceral and scathing.

#04 - Casey Hutleng | Rainbow Eater, Art, and Audio Production
Iowa artist Casey Hulteng and I discuss his projects as Rainbow Eater as well as his other musical project American Emergency. Mainly we stick to Recording, Mixing, and Mastering audio, the trials and tribulations of the working class engineer. Finding mentors and the journey, glorious and grinding along the way.
Making music since the mid to late 90's, Casey Hulteng has developed a sound that can best be described as experimental with drum and bass at it's base. From there Casey has added an assortment of styles and sounds creating a unique and sometimes eerie atmosphere to his tracks. The American Emergency band was created in order to emphasize this theme, with dark lyrics, and a dark atmosphere.
Casey Hulteng is an author, musician, and DJ with a extensive background in audio engineering, a passion for music, and a love of the arts. He has worked closely with various artists across many genres to achieve the highest standard of music. Casey has experience recording and listening to music ranging from classical compositions to heavy metal. His interests also range from playing video games to making short films. His latest project, Rainbow Eater is the endeavor of Casey Hulteng. It is as complex as it is simple- an all instrumental exploration of self, music, and life. Rainbow X Eater creates a unique blend of trance music and art. Featuring heavy breakdowns, stark contrasts between light and dark moments, and writing that weaves in traditional psychedelic themes with modern applications of metaphysics and spiritual concepts.

#03 - Ed Madison | Podcasting, Guitars, And Gaming
Edward Madison is someone I met at a mutual gig who radiated kindness and passion for the art he was involved in. At this particular show he was playing in a cover band while simultaneously recording a multi-cam version of our show together which he edited and sent to our band out of pure generosity. This sparked a friendship which we started to discuss things we had in common such as guitars and gaming. Ed also had a podcast which I was a guest on twice so far and his relaxed and inviting attitude is a big inspiration for how I have been trying to conduct this podcast. Check out Ed on the web

#02 - Gary Lee Conner | The Screaming Trees And Beyond
In this episode I had the privilege of speaking with one of my guitar heroes Gary Lee Conner, a founding member of the Screaming Trees. Along with Gary's brother Van Conner on bass, Mark Pickerel behind the drums, and Mark Lanegan with his classic vocals The Screaming Trees went on to find Major label success with their single "Nearly Lost You" in the early 1990's. In this episode we discuss classic Screaming Trees, from their humble beginnings to their years on SST Records, and onto Sony. We discuss things like how he came to work with Mike McCready of Pearl Jam and Layne Staley of Alice in Chains as well as how Mark Lanegan may have lost the master tapes to The Screaming Trees earlier works.
We also discuss Gary's latest solo releases which you can check out here: https://garyleeconner.bandcamp.com/
Also Gary Lee Conner has a fantastic YouTube page with modern performances as was as a treasure trove of unreleased Screaming Trees tracks which you can look for here: https://www.youtube.com/user/microdotgnome
Gary Lee Conner is an American musician who was the lead guitarist of alternative rock act Screaming Trees. His brother Van Conner was the band’s bassist. Conner began his career with Screaming Trees in 1985, and played with them until their disbanding in 2000. During that time he released non-Trees music: The Purple Outside-Mystery Lane (1990 New Alliance Records), with brother Patrick Conner on drums, and the single “Grasshopper’s Daydream/Behind The Smile” (1999 Sub Pop), featuring Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age.
Conner played on Beat Happening's "Indian Summer" and "Midnight a Go-Go," from Jamboree. He also contributed to "Against the 70s," from Mike Watt's Ball-Hog or Tugboat? (1995 Columbia Records).
After ten years of seclusion, Conner released an album from his band Microdot Gnome. 4D Sugarcubes was released on Moonbus International Recordings in April 2010. He is planning future releases from the band. In August 2016, Conner released a solo album, Ether Trippers, on Strange Earth Records.
#01 - Steve Albini | The Aural Tradition Of Mentoring
This is the genesis of how the podcast came to be. Call it the pilot episode. So it's only fitting we include this conversation with Steve Albini at the number one spot on the episode list. For those of you who are curious, Steve Albini is an American musician, record producer, audio engineer and music journalist. He was a member of Big Black, Rapeman and Flour, and is a member of Shellac. He is the founder, owner and principal engineer of Electrical Audio, a recording studio complex in Chicago.
Albini is also known for his outspoken and controversial views on the music industry, having stated repeatedly that it financially exploits artists and homogenizes their sound. Nearly alone among well-known producers and musicians, Albini refuses to take ongoing royalties from album sales, feeling that a producer's job is to record the music to the band's desires, and that paying a producer as if they had contributed artistically to an album is unethical.
In this episode we discuss his time spent working with Mix With The Masters, his microphone techniques, guitar effects such as the harmonic peculator, and who Steve aspires to model a career after.
