McDonald argues that America suffered two pandemics: a viral one, and a psychological one, with the "pandemic of fear" being far more dangerous and damaging. His thesis, that this "fear pandemic" is rooted in the natural anxieties of women on behalf of their children and families, worsened by the way in which feminized men failed their women, inflamed and amplified by sensationalistic media, and driven over the top by authoritarian measures, remains important to consider even outside of the "pandemic" context.
