Fresh from the disappointing sales of The Elder, at the behest of Casablanca's parent company Phonogram Records, KISS issue a foreign market only best of release that includes four new straight ahead Paul Stanley rockers. Working with producer Michael James Jackson and KISS ghost guitarist Bob Kulick the band deliver new tracks that reflect the influence of newer hard rock bands. The straight ahead production style only hints at the greatness to come when Jackson and KISS will team up for the acclaimed fan favorite, Creatures of the Night.

KISS reunite with Destroyer producer Bob Ezrin and along with new drummer Eric Carr produce their first and only concept album. The album is a commercial failure, alienating many fans who find the coming of age tale of heroic journey pretentious and overwrought. Though the band themselves largely continue to disown it today, it has inspired a devoted cult following who hail it as one of the best KISS albums. The Analysts make the case for why they're right!

Rock Album Analysts 14: Unmasked (1980)
Kiss work again with producer Vini Poncia and opt for a more power pop influenced approach. Working exclusively with session drummer Anton Fig, Poncia elicits slick and polished vocal performances and sophisticated arrangements featuring keyboardist Holly Knight. Rhythm Paul Stanley contributes more lead guitar than usual, including on "Shandi," a soft rock hit in Australia.
