Dr. Jumana al-Ahmad - Tunisian women academics reinterpret texts Islam [S1A8]

Religious Studies scholar Jumana Al-Ahmad, Washington & Lee University, VA, USAexamines the relationship between Islam and human rights in Tunisia, analyzing how a number of Tunisian academics and activists deal with the situation where human rights are seemingly incompatible with conservative and traditional interpretations of Islam. How do these academics use Islamic texts in combination with modern methods and references to human rights to promote gender equality and justice? New Generation of Tunisian Feminists In doing so, Jumana Al-Ahmad focuses primarily on a new wave of Tunisian feminist activist and academic work that seeks to promote social justice and human rights and is grounded in Tunisian studies of Arab Islamic civilization. The focus is on three women researchers: Amel Grami, Zahia Jouirou, and Olfa Youssef. They dig deep into the Islamic tradition in search of contemporary solutions to what they see as stagnation and social injustice. The thesis shows how these feminist scholars promote gender equality, and social justice by bringing Islamic sources and publications into conversation with modern methods and references to human rights. Social change based on traditional Arabic texts themselves Jumana Al-Ahmad uses an interdisciplinary perspective based on religion and cultural studies, sociology, philosophy, and intellectual and social history. The works studied are mainly in Arabic, largely produced by women scholars, and deserve attention at the international level, especially since there is a gap between the writing and scholarship of Muslim feminists in the Anglophone world and that of Arab Muslim feminists writing in Arabic. Prof. dr. Wael Hallaq - An Interview [Special]

Wael B. Hallaq is the Avalon Foundation Professor in the Humanities at Columbia University, where he has been teaching ethics, law, and political thought since 2009. His teaching and research deal with the problematic epistemic ruptures generated by the onset of modernity and the socio-politico-historical forces subsumed by it; with the intellectual history of Orientalism and the repercussions of Orientalist paradigms in later scholarship and in Islamic legal studies as a whole; and with the synchronic and diachronic development of Islamic traditions of logic, legal theory, and substantive law and the interdependent systems within these traditions. Hallaq’s writings have explored the structural dynamics of legal change in pre-modern law, and have examined the centrality of moral theory to understanding the history of Islamic law and modern political movements. For the past decade and a half, his work has increasingly focused on the critique of the modern project, including the paradigmatic structures of knowledge that drive it. His current research attempts to map the constitutional practices of Islamic governance between the eighth and eighteenth centuries, with a view, among other things, to constructing a heuristic for a critique of modern constitutional arrangements.
Hallaq joined McGill University as an assistant professor of Islamic law in 1985, after receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Washington in 1983. He became a full professor in 1994, and was named a James McGill Professor in Islamic law in 2005. He is the author of over eighty major scholarly articles and numerous books, including most recently Restating Orientalism: A Critique of Modern Knowledge (2018) and Reforming Modernity: Ethics and the New Human in the Philosophy of Abdurrahman Taha (2019). Among other books, he has also published Authority, Continuity, and Change in Islamic Law (2001), The Origins and Evolution of Islamic Law (2005), Shari`a: Theory, Practice, Transformations (2009), and An Introduction to Islamic Law (2009).
Professor Hallaq’s work is widely debated and translated, with several books and dissertations, and numerous articles, devoted to the study and analysis of his writings. In 2015, his Impossible State (2013) won Columbia’s distinguished Book Award for the two years prior, and since it appeared in Arabic in 2014, it has commanded much attention in academic circles and mass media in the Muslim world. In 2007, he won the Islamic Republic of Iran’s best book prize for his Origins and Evolution, and in 2020, the Nautilus Book Award for Reforming Modernity. In 2021, he was awarded the TÜBA Prize, given by the Turkish Academy of Science in recognition of innovative and path-breaking scholarship in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Dozens of his major articles and all his books have now been rendered into Arabic and Turkish, and many are translated into several other languages including Indonesian, Japanese, Persian, Urdu, Hebrew, Italian, German, French, and most recently Albanian, Russian and Bengali.

Dr. Mohamed Ajouaou - Islamitisch Denken en Geestelijke Verzorging [S1A7]

Dr. Mohamed Ajouaou is universitair docent islamitische theologie verbonden bij het CIT aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam en de KU Leuven. Ajouaou publiceerde onder andere over de Islam in Nederland, secularisering en over islamitische geestelijke verzorging in Nederlandse gevangenissen. Ajouaou over zijn academische vorming, zijn onderzoek naar geestelijke verzorging en het onderwijs - toegespitst op islamitische filosofie/kalam - wat hij geeft aan de Faculteit Godgeleerdheid.

Prof. dr. Nelly van Doorn-Harder - Activistische Moslimvrouwen in Indonesië [S1A6]

Prof. Nelly van Doorn-Harder (https://research.vu.nl/en/persons/pieternella-van-doorn-harder) is religiewetenschapper. Momenteel is ze professor aan de Wake Forest University (North Carolina, VS) en de Vrije Universiteit (Amsterdam, Nederland). Haar werk richt zich op de Koptische christenen uit Egypte en de islam in Zuidoost-Azië. Hoewel deze velden ver uit elkaar lijken te liggen, verbindt prof.dr. Van Doorn-Harder ze door gender, leiderschap, interreligieuze betrokkenheid en kwesties met betrekking tot vrijheid van godsdienst te bestuderen.
Ze heeft tien boeken en talloze artikelen geschreven en geredigeerd. Voor haar werk ontving ze beurzen van onder meer de Ford Foundation, Fulbright, de Universiteit van Oslo en het Contending Modernities Project van de Notre Dame University. Ze is verbonden aan het Centrum voor Interdisciplinair Onderzoek (ZIF) van de Universiteit van Bielefeld (Duitsland) in een internationaal project 'Felix Culpa'? Schuld als cultureel productieve kracht.
In deze podcast is prof. van Doorn-Harder het gesprek aangegaan met host Sem van Vliet en zij hebben het gehad over haar studieachtergrond, haar reizen en onderzoek in Egypte en Indonesië, de rol van islamitische vrouwenbewegingen in Indonesië en hoe zij invulling geeft aan haar onderwijs.

Tarek Khater (MA) - Geestelijke verzorging en islamstudies [S1A5]

Dr. Yaser Ellethy – Contextualiseren van de Islamitische Theologie [S1A3]

Dr. Yaser Ellethy is hoofddocent en directeur van het Centrum voor Islamitische Theologie (CIT) van de faculteit der Godgeleerdheid van de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Hij is tweemaal gepromoveerd; in de islamitische theologie en in de filologie en publiceerde vele artikelen. Dr. Ellethy werd in 2019 tevens uitgeroepen tot docent van het jaar bij de Faculteit Religie en Theologie van de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

Dr. Pieter Coppens – Onderzoek naar Koranexegese (tafsir) [S1A2]

Pieter Coppens is Assistant Professor in Islamitische wetenschappen aan het CIT aan de Vrije Universiteit. Zijn onderzoek focust op de geschiedeins van Koranexegese en de geschiedenis van het Soefisme. In 2018 heeft hij een VENI-beurs ontvangen voor zijn project over de ontstaansgeschiedenis, groei en ontwikkeling van Salafi Koranexegese sinds de 19e eeuw.

Dr. Welmoet Boender – Islamstudies in het Westen [S1A1]

Het werk van Welmoet Boender betreft de ontwikkeling van de islam en moslims in Europa, met speciale aandacht voor Nederland. Ze heeft uitgebreide expertise opgebouwd met betrekking tot de rol van imams en vrouwelijk religieus leiderschap in Nederlandse moskeeën. Ze legt momenteel de laatste hand aan een monografie en is gastredacteur van een speciale uitgave die de ontwikkeling van islamitische theologie en imamtraining in Duitsland, het Verenigd Koninkrijk, Oostenrijk, België en Nederland.
