Returning to movies more recent for our universe, Greg and I talk about Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, somewhat of a sequel to Bumblebee set in 1994 in a timeline different from the other Transformers films (possibly due to time travel by the Fast & Furious crew). Season 2, Ep 43 - Star Wars Holiday Special 2
The number 2 in the title is kinda scary, given that I'm so used to Roman numerals with Star Wars titles. Compared to season 1, I haven't cared much about the episode numbering, but it dawned on me while editing that the season and episode numbers are fitting, given that the topic is Star Wars Holiday Special 2, and it came out exactly 43 years after the first one. I'm joined by Jesse Bennett from the podcast Question/Possible Answer to talk about how this Disney+ special handles in-universe and out-of-universe stuff, the funny references it makes, the musical numbers, and more! Season 2, Ep 39 - Escape Room 3D
Much to our surprise, Marco and I went to an escape room challenge in which we were tricked into watching Escape Room 3D. Sony was just that desperate to have us watch the rushed third movie after Escape Room 2 didn't do so well last year. (In that other universe, the second one was titled Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, which should've been 2rnament of Champions if you ask me. My other self said it was just okay and the puzle solving was too quick.) Season 2, Ep 23 - The Batman
Mr. Multiverse returns to talk with me about The Batman, the Matt Reeves-directed film starring Robert Pattinson. How well did this handle the detective angle? What did we think of these versions of the villains and supporting characters? All this and plenty of talk about our overall experiences with the Batman franchise! Season 2, Ep 17 - One-Year Anniversary Special: PodCast Aside Reviews...Delayed Replay!
A celebration of this little podcast having lasted a year. For this momentous occasion, I was joined again by past guests Andres Serrano and Dylan Green. We went through a few different topics throughout the episode, but the main course was a podcast episode we intercepted from yet another universe. The podcast is an improvised one called PodCast Aside. On it, versions of ourselves celebrated its one-year anniversary by "reviewing/recapping" Delayed Replay, which in their universe never got off the ground. I know. There are so many layers to this. Plus, toward the end, there is a voice message from the other me whom you may have heard on this show before. He watched Spiral: From the Book of Saw and shared his non-spoiler thoughts. Celebrate by listening to all this wonderful chaos! Season 2, Ep 16 - Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Joining me once again, this time to talk about Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, is...Mr. Multiverse. Surprised? I bet you are. I can just hear the reactions. We talked about how well this works as a sequel and how well it deals with the repercussions of WandaVision. And it connects to a bunch of other things as Sam Raimi also incorporates horror elements. Listen to what they are! And stick to the end for the "post-credits scene!" 12:50 - I couldn't find anything that says explicitly that they are based on Azathoth, but the similarities are apparent if you just do an image search. 34:50 - The MCU Blade was teased in Morbius. In this universe, anyway. 45:50 - Check out the episode on Shang-Chi: Legend of the Ten Rings. 49:15 - I honestly can't remember if I've watched Wolfman (2010), but I doubt it's as good as Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet the Wolfman. 50:15 - Check out the FastX episode. 54:00 - Yesshit has not been published yet, but keep an eye out for it. 54:15 - Check out the bonkers music video for "Owner of a Lonely Heart" by Yes. 54:21 - Check out the music video for "Moonlight Desires" by Gowan. 54:44 - "Close to the Edge" by Yes. Season 2, Ep 15 - Space Jam 2
You probably forgot that there was a Space Jam 2 in 1999, thanks to the memory-erasing feature at the end. Thanks to the internet, people now know to blink during that part. Joining me again Zach Arnold from the Intergalactic Peace Coalition Podcast. What did we think of the wacky crossover elements? How well does this work as a baseball/basketball/golf movie? What about Michael Jordan's acting in this one? And what's the deal with Berserk-O? Listen to our thoughts! Show Notes: 5:00 - Here's that Trust Your Doctor episode. Space Jam 2 talk is toward the end. 13:00 - June Bugs info on the Cartoon Network Wiki. 13:45 - Loonatics Unleashed follows the descendants of the Looney Tunes characters. Check out the wild premise on Wikipedia. 17:30 - When it comes to Scooby-Doo, lots of people love how Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island (1998) subverted the expectations of the monsters being fake. I also remember enjoying Shaggy & Scooby-Doo Get a Clue (2006-2008) because it was a change from the repetitive mystery-solving and more of a comedic spy show. But my favorite thing in the franchise is Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated (2010-2013), which was more of a serialized ongoing mystery. 28:30 - I realized after the fact that I could've mentioned High School Musical, which I know Zach hates. 41:00 - Stan's product placement line in this Honest Trailer. 46:30 - Captain Impressive on the Superhero Wiki. 1:20:55 - #BeeBeeQWatch Here's that IPC announcement. Season 2, Ep 13 - Paranormal Activity 7: Casper Returns
Can you even call it a return if the character didn't appear in previous films? For a film series based on found footage, this one sure does rely on things having already happened offscreen. I am truly puzzled by some of the choices this "retooling" did. Listen to some thoughts from me and Greg on the Paranormal Activity franchise as a whole and the truly surprising plot points of this new one, Paranormal Activity 7: Casper Returns. Season 2, Ep 12 - The Boss Baby: Family Business
Delayed Replay has finally covered a DreamWorks movie. My friend Kelsey Gitlin from the Just Two Lads Podcast (you may have heard the other lad Andres on this show) joined me for this momentous occasion. The movie is The Boss Baby: Family Business. How does it compare to the first film? What did we think of the voice actor change? What about the soundtrack overall? Is there enough heart for people to appreciate? Listen and find out! Show Notes: 12:15 - Tobey Maguire is turning 46 on June 27. 14:15 - E.G. Daily is the voice of Tommy Pickles, but Kelsey was referring to Nancy Cartwright, the voice of Chuckie Finster. Check out the masterclass video ad on YouTube. 16:30 - I neglected to mention that The Boss Baby, like Shrek, is loosely based on a picture book. It was written by Marla Frazee and published in 2010. 19:30 - It's called The Boss Baby: Get That Baby! It came out after season 3 and features the villains of those seasons. 21:00 - I could not figure out whether "First Baby," "First Son," or "First Daughter" are official titles. They certainly don't seem widely used. Apparently there are two unrelated films titled First Daughter from 1999 and 2004. 21:40 - Chandler Bing from Friends works in statistical analysis and data reconfiguration. 26:00 - The Boss Baby might take place in the late 1970s. Given the music used in the sequel, it is possible that Family Business may have anachronisms depending on when it's supposed to take place. 26:20 - Here's a post about The Incredibles being set in the 1960s at Oh My Disney. 30:45 - The original The Lion King was rated G, whereas the remake was rated PG. 32:00 - The app is RunPee, and it seems to still be available. 32:30 - What's After The Credits? 35:05 - Check out the Black Widow episode of Delayed Replay. 35:20 - Check out Improv Revolution. 48:45 - I think there are actually about 40 Kidz Bop albums. 49:55 - Chris Klemens' YouTube channel 50:10 - Chris Klemens' Spotify playlist is titled Now That's What I Call Vibezz. Season 2, Ep 8 - Mortal Kombat (2021)
Here is the first of three consecutive video game movie episodes for this season! First up, it's the new Mortal Kombat movie. Joining me again for this episode is Mr. Multiverse! The discussion includes comparisons to the older films and the ways in which this new one that came out in January fell short, such as through its characters and how they were handled and portrayed. It even includes a bit of back and forth on unfortunate implications that sometimes happen in filmmaking intentionally or unintentionally. So as Scorpion says, "Get over here!" 3:10 - The moment Mr. Multiverse mentions from the Peter Capaldi interview on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson can be found at the timestamp in this YouTube video. 3:55 - Craig Ferguson and Neil Gaiman talking about Doctor Who here. 5:25 - Check out Delayed Replay's episode about Wonder Woman 1984. 27:10 - For context, Mr. Multiverse lives a few states away from New York. 28:50 - According to this section of Kitana's Wikipedia article, Kitana's original name was Kitsune, which is the Japanese word for Fox. However, the name was changed to Kitana because the former being Japanese was not deemed compatible with "Shang and Shao who were both Chinese in origin." Kitana ended up being a combination of "Kitsune" and "Katana." 30:40 - 31:45 - Spoilers for Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker. 37:30 - Check out Delayed Replay's episode about Jungle Cruise. 46:00 - From this October 15, 2012 interview with John Tobias: "The 'K' in 'Kombat' came about during the trademark process in naming the game. We really liked Mortal Combat as a name, but it couldn’t get past legal. So we changed the 'C' to a 'K,' and the rest is history." Season 2, Ep 6 - Old
For this episode, I got another friend from the committee of Sci-Fi & Horror Society (and he's also a member of Doctor Who Society), Oliver Titcomb, to talk about Old, the new M. Night Shyamalan-directed film based on the graphic novel Sandcastle (which neither of us have read). What other stories did this remind of of? How does it compare to other Shyamalan films? Did the twist work? Listen to our thoughts! Show Notes: 6:50 - Oliver was probably referring to this article from io9. 9:40 - Q-Soc, University of Sussex Physics Society 13:40 - Check out a discussion of a Torchwood episode "Adrift" on Trust Your Doctor: A Doctor Who Podcast. 14:05 - The Sixth Doctor quote is "What's the point of a good quotation if you can't change it, from the serial The Two Doctors. 42:00 - See for yourself on the After Earth Wikipedia article's "Cancelled franchise" section. 49:40 - Come to think of it, this reminds me of the "remember the barbecue" moment from Rick and Morty episode "Total Rickall." Season 2, Ep 5 - Tom & Jerry (2020)
Greg is back for this episode, where we once again talk about a December 2020 comedy film that takes place in New York. This time, it's the new Tom & Jerry movie (which comes out next week in that other universe). What did we think of the mix of animation and live-action? How generic did parts of this movie feel? And how riveting were our tangents about the Super Mario Bros. film and Spaghettiman, among other things? We have made it to The 355! That's right. 355 episodes! Or is it season 3 episode 55? Just kidding! The 355 is the spy movie that came out a couple of weeks ago (in my universe). Joining me again is Greg, the president of University of Sussex Sci-Fi & Horror Society. Was this film as serious as the trailer made it out to be? How well did the ensemble cast work overall? I'm talking about last year's Kingsman prequel The King's Man with fellow University of Sussex Sci-Fi & Horror Society members Ted, Greg, and James. How well did this work as a prequel? Holiday Special - DUNECEMBER
Holiday Special - DUNECEMBER
It’s been a little while, but here’s the Delayed Replay Holiday Special - DUNECEMBER! That’s right. If Seinfeld can make up Festivus, I can make up Dunecember. On this episode, Vinny Tangherlini is back to talk with me about Dune. First, we start of the episode going over some fun and festive Dunecember traditions. Then we go over how we became aware of Dune, touching upon the original books, the David Lynch movie, the Syfy miniseries, and even the unmade Jodorowsky film. Then we go into what we thought of the new movie and what it brought to this fine table that is cinema. Along the way, you get to hear me mispronounce names, as well as our singing! Celebrate with a listen! Novel Special - Star Wars: The High Republic: A Test of Courage
The scary month continues, and what could be scarier than these kids stranded on a jungle moon? Okay, maybe I’ve been stretching it with the “spooky month” theme. After all, this and the couple of episodes before it have been tame topics. But that’ll change next time. For now, it’s Star Wars: The High Republic: A Test of Courage, released on September 8. 22 - Soul
Time to talk about that movie where Jamie Foxx played a glowing blue character. No, not The Amazing Spider-Man 2. It is Pixar’s Soul! Definitely in the spirit of the season, because what could be scarier than…being dead but also not? All right, I’m gonna level with you all. I just wanted this to be movie episode 22 since there’s a character called 22. Been wanting to talk about this one for a while, and I finally got to talk about it with Jake Damon, who has been a co-host on various episodes of the Intergalactic Peace Coalition. First, we talked about the short film that preceded Soul, which is called Burrow. (And it was National Bunny Day, weirdly enough). Then we got into our Soul discussion, talking about the animation, the music, and the existential questions. We also talked about Pixar, Dreamworks, Studio Ghibli, Cartoon Network, and even our creative writing endeavors. This episode is good for the soul! (Also, pardon the overlapping voices every now and then. I did what I could in post.) Show Notes: 9:20 - Cartoon Network City - Bumpers HQ Compilation 9:30 - The Miguzi Collection Complete 18:00 - I should mention that Dreamworks does do 2D shows on Netflix, such as The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants and Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts. The former captures the tone of the books, and the latter just finished telling its story, which was amazing. 30:00 - This process of “unlocking” actually reminds me of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. 41:30 - Try not to cry watching this. 42:00 - Here’s that mashup. 44:25 - More about “Sonny’s Blues.” 50:50 - I love Seinfeld so much that I recently co-hosted an IPC episode about it with Ben Hart, which will be on the IPC feed sometime soon. 53:15 - It happened in the Jeff Goldblum episode. 1:02:55 - It actually ended up arriving on September 28, two days later. 21 - Bob's Burgers: The Movie
This very popular show is on its eleventh season, and it stars H. Jon Benjamin. No, not Archer. It’s Bob’s Burgers. More specifically, Bob’s Burgers: The Movie, and Loren Bouchard’s birthday is a great time to release this episode. On this show, there’ve been tangents about McDonald’s, Carl’s Jr., and In-N-Out. 20 - The Forever Purge
Spooky season continues! This time, it is The Forever Purge, the supposed final installment of The Purge franchise. I was joined by Dylan and Kiyan from Decorative Vegetable for this review. They have reviewed the other Purge movies on their movie trilogy podcast Triple Play, so this episode kinda completes that cycle, I guess. Seriously, I suggest listening to their episodes on the first three movies and The First Purge. With this one thrown into the mix, it all kinda works pretty well as a trilogy. Anyway, listen to us talk about The Forever Purge and make some jokes about other franchises that could be mixed with The Purge franchise. Plus, I finally got an email to read, and it’s a weird one. 19 - Antlers
It’s October, the time when people all of a sudden decide to watch a bunch of horror movies because they don’t want to watch them any other time of the year. Accounting for this trend, I have saved some spooky topics for this month. This time, it’s Antlers, which came out last April. I talked with my friend Claudia about the acting, how the wendigo was handled, and the overall horror aesthetic. Plus, we talked about other stuff like Babylon 5, the Jaws sequels, The Witcher franchise, the Teen Wolf series, and whom we prefer between the DCEU Superman and the Arrowverse Superman. This month’s releases are off to a great start! Novel Special - Star Wars: The High Republic: Light of the Jedi
On this special episode, I was joined once again by Chris Abbott (Starrapter), and we talked about Star Wars: The High Republic: Light of the Jedi. Released on August 25, this novel by Charles Soule started The High Republic publishing initiative, which presents stories set 200 years before The Phantom Menace. Though we finished reading the book quickly, it took a while for this episode to come out. But hey, that gave people time to read the book, so there you go. We all read at different speeds. 17 - Minions: The Rise of Gru
Taking a break from horror (for now), here is an episode about Minions: The Rise of Gru. Kiyan from the Decorative Vegetable podcast network joined me for this one. We talked about how this prequel compared to other Despicable Me films and how weird the branding is. (Naturally, I used Star Wars for the sake of an analogy.) Plus, we went on tangents, including our hot takes on Stranger Things and The Godfather, gripes with the Fantastic Beasts series, and possible conspiracies that we may have uncovered! Show Notes: 29:20 - Here is the article that Kiyan mentioned. 45:45 - POV: You’re the “i” in the Pixar logo 49:15 - So in my head, I think I was mixing this episode with another episode called “The Man with Two Brians,” which I watched when I was 14. The one where Brian gets run over, “Life of Brian,” aired five years later, when I was 19. 1:20:25 - I did not listen to the second Garbage album before posting this, but if I ever do, I’ll add a comment here! 16 - Spiral: From the Book of Saw
At last, an episode about the ninth installment of the saga. No, not The Rise of Skywalker. Try again. No, we already did F9. Sorry to keep you in SAW-spense, but it’s Spiral: From the Book of Saw. That installment of the SAW-ga where Osmosis Jones is Zeke Banks and Mace Windu is his dad Marcus Banks. Yes, we went on those tangents. I was joined by Andres Serrano, of course, seeing how we were still trapped in a room next to the one we tried escaping from in the Escape Room 2 episode. As we talked about Spiral on what is now the longest episode of Delayed Replay, we showed off what huge Saw fans we were and even talked about Saw fanfiction, The Office (again), and Community. So. Andres Serrano and I found ourselves trapped in an escape room. To get out, we had to talk about Escape Room 2. Is this a win for us? Listen and find out! We talk about what kinda worked, what really didn’t work, and how we would feel if there were a third movie. 14 - Candyman
What would YOU have titled the new Candyman movie? Was it confusing to you as well that, despite being in the same continuity, it has the same title as the first one? Andres Serrano is back to guest host on this one. He’d seen only the first one before this one (which mainly continues a thread from the first one). I’ve seen all three and I recap them for him before we dive into our thoughts on this newer one and what it had to say. And of course, we went on some fun tangents, including such topics as guilty pleasure movies and things from the ‘90s that should be brought back! Give this a listen! Also, here’s an article called “Some Idiot Defends the Kandy Man.” 59:40 - Men in Black: International is in the same continuity as the original trilogy. But in my head, I thought it was a “reboot” in the sense that it MIB was reinvented with a new cast and such. 59:50 - For some reason, I neglected to mention that the first RoboCop film came out 1987 and that a new one called RoboCop Returns, which will also follow the trend of being a direct follow-up to the first film and ignoring the sequels. 1:00:15 - I also neglected to mention that the first Die Hard movie came out 1988. 1:02:55 - Obviously, there’s the Serenity movie and the Firefly comics. 1:07:10 - The drink was called ‘What the Flock,’ which was made with Blue Chair Bay Rum. Once again, all aboard the 1980s nostalgia hype train (plane?). This time, it’s Top Gun: Maverick, which came out in June and turned out to not be as reliant on nostalgia as other media. Silence the Jurassic Park theme song, as this is about something from a different park. I wouldn’t be able to feature the song anyway for copyright reasons. That’s how copyright works when it comes to podcasts, right? I’m still not 100% sure. Anyway, it’s Jungle Cruise, not to be confused with Julee Cruise. As my friend Andres Serrano suggested, we had a fun discussion about The Walking Dead #193, which would’ve been a perfect ending had it not been for the three issues that came after.
