Disruptors and Rebels only
Detention is seen as punishment for those who are always in trouble, never following the rules, being disobedient. So this will be conversations with those who are disruptors, forging new paths, challenging the system, thinking outside the box, and really getting to the actual root of the problem.
Kids who end up in detention are usually bored in class or has some underlying issue that rarely is explored because folks don’t make the time. But in the Detention we tackle the problems, make the time, and offer solutions.

"Voices from the Frontline: A Teacher's Perspective on Injustice and Resilience in Education"
Stephanie Paz was a teacher in Houston, Texas, who moved to the Bronx to become a high school English teacher. Her experience in one of the most controversial states when it comes to legalizing policies that ban books and has deemed it unlawful to teach anything related to Critical Race Theory, to what it was like to live through a school shooting, is compelling. Every state has their flaws and what has allowed Stephanie to remain committed has been her resilience. Tune into this latest episode that amplifies the voice of teacher during this entire week of appreciation.

7 Keys for Superintendents to Succeed
7 Keys for Superintendents to Succeed
Superintendents have the great responsibility of leading an entire district that consists of numerous schools, thousands of students and hundreds of teachers. We often look to the principal as the person with the highest title, but it’s actually the superintendent who establishes the district wide goals, institutes policies, and hold school leaders accountable for student outcomes. But how are they leveraging their positions to transform the community they lead? How are they keeping a pulse on what is happening in their schools, beyond the yearly evaluations they may conduct on each leader once a year? These 7 keys will unlock opportunities for the superintendent to have system wide impact and lead with integrity.

Breaking News: Test Scores and Learning Loss. What Can Be Done?
The standardized exam results have been released across the US, and many states have seen a sharp decline in academic progress. But that was to be expected given that children were home learning remotely for two years. Now the question is who is responsible for addressing the learning loss? Principals, teachers, or parents? What about the tech, book, and curriculum companies capitalizing off of this moment? It’s time to address the issue, tune in to listen and learn.

Here’s Why When Teachers Leave, Society is to Blame
On the first official day of school in Ohio, there was a teachers strike in the largest school district for three days. What were their demands? Higher pay, better working conditions, and providing elementary school students with PE and arts classes for amongst other issues. While they were fighting for the basic essentials, where was the public outrage and protest?
In this episode, Dr. Lopez explains how the American Rescue Plan could have intentionally focused on the retention and meeting the needs of teachers, as well as those needs to be held accountable for valuing our teachers.

When school counselors are expected to guide, who is supporting them through the crisis? A conversation with Diane Nathaniel (part 2/2).
Guidance counselors play a pivotal role in our schools, yet their responsibilities are rarely discussed when we talk about issues in education. In this part two conversation with Diane Nathaniel, school guidance counselor who is responsible for offering support to over 900 students in a NYC public school, we discuss the struggles our elementary students are facing, the impact COVID had in our buildings, and why she and fellow colleagues deserve to be treated as professionals with an expertise in child development, not bandages that only serves as temporary fixes for larger problems.

The American Rescue Plan : A Billion Dollar Payday for an Education System that is Already Broke.
The American Rescue Plan has distributed $125B across school districts in the US to ensure educators and students return to in person learning. During his keynote address as SXSW EDU, Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona, stated the money could be used to increase the pay of teachers, support professional development, and innovate schools. But without regulations in place to monitor the usage of funds the system remains broke with companies making profits, educators feeling defeated, and children still experiencing learning loss.
Let’s talk about it in DETENTION.
