Charlotte Bismuth | Author, Bad Medicine: Catching New York's Deadliest Pill Pusher
Charlotte Bismuth, former ADA at the NYC Special Narcotics office, joins me for a heartfelt conversation about her new book - Bad Medicine: Catching New York's Deadliest Pill Pusher. The book is a investigative true crime story that culminates in a precedent setting trial and conviction, coupled with a vulnerable memoir of Charlotte's own personal struggles, making this book an exquisite combination of both genres. Charlotte is donating a portion of book sales to the FedUp! Coalition, which works to Prevent our children, friends, and loved ones from becoming addicted to opioids.

Tyler Maroney | The Modern Detective
Tyler Maroney, Private Investigator and author of the book, MODERN DETECTIVE: How Corporate Intelligence is Reshaping the World. Inside this book, will hear the very up close and personal, insiders stories on what PI's like Tyler and his colleagues do in the world of financial crime, business, and much more. The stereotypes are not factual...mostly. Listen to how Tyler breaks it down for us, and if you fancy yourself a citizen detective, get your magnifying glass out ( or high speed internet ready), because he has a serious call to action for you!
To make an interesting conversation even more fascinating, we touch on Adnan Syed's case ( Tyler's firm QRI was featured in the 2019 HBO doc), Q anon ( let's find him!), and another case and documentary he worked on featuring Philadelphia hip hop artist, Meek Mills. Anthony Redgrave | Trans Doe Task Force
Today I am joined by Anthony Redgrave to highlight the work of the Trans Doe Task Force; TDTF was created to research cold cases in which the subject may have been transgender or gender-variant. TDTF also advises and educates the public, media, and law enforcement regarding the needs of and sensitive differences between Trans Doe cases and other Doe cases. The TDTF also reaches out to assist law enforcement departments, medical examiners, and forensic anthropologists with getting their cases submitted for forensic genealogy.
This is an area that I know little about but am totally fascinated by. I am thankful to Anthony for breaking down this important work and how the true crime community can help.

Small Town Dicks Hosts | Yeardley Smith + Detectives Dan + Dave
You might know my next guests podcast, SMALL TOWN DICKS. If you don't, you still might feel like you know of my hosts. What do I mean? Well, Yeardley Smith, one host and producer of Small Town Dicks podcast, is also the iconic voice of Lisa Simpson. She's a legend. What. DELIGHT to speak with her. And her co-hosts and co-producers, Detectives Dan and Dave? They are pretty stellar as well.
Small Town Dicks is a new favorite of mine and you will hear exactly why once you listen to this episode. Yeardley's love of and talent for storytelling shines through the great detective work that Dave and Dan share each week. They are often joined by other police officers who share the cases and stories that have stayed with them throughout their careers.
The four of us ( what a crowd!) talked podcasting, true crime, and how they all approached the national conversation around police reform this year. I got to find out what they are listening to and watching, and the cold cases they can't stop thinking about.

Week 2 of our November series: TRUE CRIME PODCASTERS! My next guest needs no introduction, but let me try anyway. He is one half of the raucously funny, wild hit of a podcast, TRUE CRIME OBSESSED. The show who's title we all relate to immediately. Patrick Hinds is here today and he shares how he and Gillian stumbled into the successful format of TCO, then formed his network, THE OBSESSED NETWORK, and hints at a new some show coming in January.

Welcome to the November series: TRUE CRIME PODCASTERS! I mean, this is what we are all about, my friends! Thrilled to kick it off with the talented writer, reporter, producer and podcast, Josh Dean. Female Persuasion: Women and Cults with Rebekah Sebastian and Tori Telfer
Today's episode is from a LIVE event last October at Caveat in New York City. Co-hosted with the lovely and talented Tori Telfer, we delved into the feminine side of cults, with some cult trivia for good measure!
If you just want to hear my spiel on NXIVM skip to about 3o minutes in and you will hear me breakdown what I know then about the women leadership who helped Keith Raniere run the operation. I know so much more one year later, but my enthusiasm for the subject has not waned since then as you will hear in my voice.
We are officially concluded our series on cults, but there are still a few conversations I might be having in light of recent events regarding Keith Raniere. I will release those as bonus content as they are ready, but next week we start a new series: TRUE CRIME PODCASTERS, and I talked to some GOOD ones!

Frank Lyford | Heaven's Gate Cult Survivor
It is my pleasure to introduce you to my guest, Frank Lyford. Frank spent 18 years in the Heaven's Gate cult, following the teachings of Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles. Frank saw red flags along the way, but it took nearly two decades for these warnings to become loud enough for him to know if was time to go. And once he knew, we left. What happens after is a long journey of reorienting and healing from that experience.
Frank has done extensive recovery work to help get to a place of self-love and acceptance. He now coaches others to help them find this intuition and ability within themselves. Frank is also featured in the People Investigates Cults documentary, Episode 3 Heaven's Gate.
Other sources I read while researching and to help write the intro: RollingStone Magazine, The New York Times, and Wikipedia.
Make sure you are subscribed so you don't miss an episode- next week is the final in our series on CULTS.

Dr. Janja Lalich | Cult Expert, Sociologist, Author
Another Wednesday, another new DIE-ALOGUE episode about cults. We are joined today by a wonderful professor, author, expert and sociologist, Dr. Janja Lalich. Dr. Lalich unwittingly joined a political cult in the 1970's and spent over 10 years crushed by the group's grip. She finally broke free and set about the long road to recovery. Once healed, she wanted to dedicate her professional energy to education around cults and did so as a professor, a consultant, and still consults now, even when she could comfortably retire. She is constantly called upon to help family members or former cult members, including Catherine and India Oxenberg, as seen on HBO's The Vow.
Dr. Lalich helps us understand the concept of "bounded choice," and why she prefers that term over brainwashing. You can find a book she wrote (one of many!) on the subject here, as well as her website which is a wonderful resource. I am grateful for her time as she is doing interviews all the time these days- not a coincidence as we discuss! Find out why the pandemic is the perfect breeding ground for cults and what she thinks about Q Anon.

Rick Alan Ross | Cult Expert, Part 2
Welcome back to our kick off cult episode - PART TWO. I spoke with a leading expert in the world of cults, Rick Alan Ross. Does his name sound familiar? He is often called up to speak about cults in the media and was most recently seen on HBO’s The Vow. In this episode you hear all about Rick's 14 year legal battle with Keith Raniere and NXIVM and just how dangerous a man he really is when a file on the organization kept on Rick was exposed. And wait until you hear what - or who (?) is keeping him up at night.
Rick Alan is the author of CULTS Inside Out, and wow, what a resource. It has just about every cult you can name and many you can’t inside, and also has a dedicated section to NXIVM - Rick Alan Ross is the forefront of what is happening with cults. He is also the founder and Executive Director of the Cult Education Institute.
I am grateful for his time, expertise and willingness to share his vast knowledge about cults with us. We touch on the history of cults, what makes a cult leader, the makings of a cult, and we get deep into Q anon and NXIVM - both modern day cult ( or at least extremist thinking for Q anon). This episode is timely and relevant as Rick predicts more people than ever will be susceptible to cults during this pandemic and in the age of (mis)information.

Jeff Deskovic | Exonoree + Founder of The Jeffrey Deskovic Foundation for Justice
This is PART 2 of my conversation with Jeff. Go back to Part 1 if you didn't listen.
We left off when Jeff shared how his exoneration happened and how he was released with nothing. Learn how unprepared for life on the outside he was, and what he accomplished in spite of it. He is a survivor, a hero, and now a legal advocate for those still behind bars fighting for their innocence and freedom. Jeff is an inspiration! See resources and ways you can learn more and support Jeff in his work below.

Jeff Deskovic | Exonoree + Founder The Jeffrey Deskovic Foundation for Justice
It was an honor to interview today's guest, Jeff Deskovic. He is many things - an advocate, a lawyer, a business owner, a free man, but for 16 years, he was an inmate at a maximum security mens prison. His story is harrowing and humanizes the topic of wrongful convictions. I am astounded at his resilience and blown away by his desire to help other people who find themselves serving unjust sentences. The fact that he made his way through law school and established a foundation is even more impressive when you learn he was convicted at just 16 years old.
Jeff is am extraordinary person doing important work. Please explore the links below and consider ways you can help Jeff in his mission, even if it's only through sharing among your network. Brace yourself for Part 1 of Jeff's story. Part 2 comes out next week, make sure you are subscribed so you don't miss it.

Maggie Freleng | Unjust & Unsolved Podcast
Welcome, Maggie Freleng! Maggie has been on my list to interview for a while, and the launch of her new podcast from the Obsessed Network, Unjust & Unsolved, seemed like the perfect time to do so. Maggie lets us in on her reluctant foray into the true crime world, and how her background in journalism prepared her to advocate for stories she felt needed amplifying. Our JUSTICE/INJUSTICE conversation heats up as Maggie shares the incredible stories from those inside who are fighting to overturn their convictions. We discuss actual innocence, our sentencing policies, and how we're holding up during quarantine in New York City! The first two episodes of Unjust & Unsolved are out - subscribe and listen wherever you get your podcasts!

David Rudolf+ Sonya Pfeiffer | Abuse of Power Podcast
We are back! Welcome to Season 2 of DIE-ALOGUE: a true crime conversation! We are kicking it off STRONG with power couple, David Rudolf and Sonya Pfeiffer - married attorneys who are now focused entirely on wrongful conviction cases. You will hear all about how their podcast came to be and their impassioned perspectives on the American criminal justice system. You probably know David from his work representing Michael Peterson, and his scene stealing presence in Netflix's The Staircase, but this might be your first introduction to Sonya, an award winning journalist who covered the Peterson trial, and then decided to go to law school. Together, they now practice law together. Sonya and David are also owners of a contemporary art gallery in Durham, NC, and if you think that isn't relevant, just wait until the end of our conversation! Re-Release Episode 15 with Steve Hodel | Retired LAPD Homicide Detective + Author, Black Dahlia Avenger
In light of the recent press mention in THRIVE GLOBAL, I thought I would re-play the episode that. made their list of "Unbelievable True Stories" because that's just what this one is... IF you CHOOSE to believe him. I have gotten some push back on this one, but I stand by the interview, the conversation and the wonderful Steve Hodel, who was gracious enough to share his story.
I will see you next week, Sept. 9 with an ALL NEW episode as we kick off Season 2!
__________________________________________________________________________________________
Episode 15 is a crazy story, and I really want your feedback on this one. I speak with Steve Hodel - retired LAPD homicide detective, author of 5 books, including the Black Dahlia Avengers series, and the son of George Hodel - who Steve believes is the BLACK DHALIA KILLER.
I won't say too much more, but his story is a wild one, and I appreciate Steve taking the time to share so much of it with me. If you want to read his books, his blog, or learn more about him, see below for places you can find Steve and his work. Also, here is a link to the ROOT OF EVIL podcast that we reference.
Also, it just so happens to be Steve's birthday when this episode drops, so join me on twitter in wishing him a HAPPY BIRTHDAY! @steveHodelBDA ( Find me on twitter @diealoguepod

Matthew Horace | Author "The Black and the Blue."
If you are FOR changing what police work in the Unites States looks like, and want to bring equality to our system, but ALSO want to remain supportive of law enforcement, Matthew Horace has ideas. He lays out the ways and reasons all of this is not only possible, but necessary. I can't think of a better interview to close out Season 1 - yes, DIE-ALOGUE is taking a brief hiatus to prepare for a new Season in September, more on that below! First, you need to listen to my conversation with Matthew in which we discuss police reform, BLM, defunding the police, Ferguson, the murders of George Floyd and Rashard Brooks, and more. Then you must go get his book so you can learn even more about law enforcement in our country, from a man who lived it for 30 years, AND his dozens of interview subjects - men and women in blue - all over the country, who also serve and protect.
His book is wonderful and combines his own story about becoming a cop, the racism he experienced in and outside of the department, and interviews with other officers and agencies who share their stories as well. Understanding policing history is critical as we look to make changes for the future. You can find his book here. Learn more about Matthew here. And follow him on social media: FB Instagram Twitter
Note: Putting a link to The Breathe Bill which was just proposed at the time of our interview and is further along now. You can learn about it here.
I ( Rebekah) want to say THANK YOU FOR LISTENING. I've put out new episodes 56 weeks in a row and it has been incredible. I am so grateful to you the listeners, and my incredible guests. Josh Bloch | Journalist, The Lost Kids Podcast
Recognize this guy? He was my guest on Episode 19, where we explored his amazing work on the CBC podcast, UNCOVER: Escaping NXIVM! That's right, it's Josh Bloch - my first returning guest - this time to discuss his latest work, the UCP Audio podcast, The Lost Kids, which focuses on the troubled teen industry- and guess what? It has possible roots to a bizarre cult - I am seeing a theme here.
Josh is a talented journalist and I love how he thinks and how he reports his findings. If you haven't already, be sure to check out The Lost Kids and let me know what you think. Also, if you want to watch the live event I did with with Tori Telfer ( my 1st guest!) about NXIVM and other cults, you can watch it here. Charlotte Lang | FBI Agent, NETFLIX Fear City
When I watched Fear City - the new three part docu-series about the mafia in 1980’s New York, I immediately zeroed in on FBI agent Charlotte Lang. I wanted more of her story. And lucky me, I got it! Now retired, Charlotte shares her not so conventional path to the FBI (she answered a newspaper ad after working sales for IMB), and some mob related stories that you won’t see on Fear City ( SHE HAD LUNCH NEXT TO FAT TONY AND SPIED ON HIM). Come for the mafia stories, stay to hear what it was like to be one of a handful of Female agents at the bureau.
I think you are going to love her and this doc as much as I did.

Christian Barth | True Crime Author
Christian Barth is an author and attorney living in Connecticut, but hails from the lovely Garden State - New Jersey. His most recent book, The Garden State Parkway murders, is about about the unsolved murders of Susan Davis and Elizabeth Perry, which occurred on Memorial Day Weekend, 1969in Ocean City, NJ. Christian recalls his parents discussing this case while driving along the very same highway where their bodies were discovered. His curiosity around the case combined to his deep interest in the American era of the late 1960's inspired him to write this book which ended up being a nine year long journey.
You will understand why when you hear our conversation. Among the many suspects in this case, Ted Bundy and Gerald Stano make an appearance, with Bundy's possible involvement being controversial to some. Though not a known serial killer, one suspect ended up being an active member of the Aryan Republican Army, and known white supremacist.
This book is so rich in both context and case details, that I hope it wakes the memory of anyone still alive that might have information about the case. You can find more about Christian and his work here. You can find The Garden State Parkway Murders and his first book, The Origins of Infamy, here. Learn more about Christian and find him on social via his website.

Cheyna Roth | Investigative Journalist and True Crime author
Cheyna Roth is an investigative journalist and true crime author, but her career began as a lawyer in the prosecutors office. Hear all about what inspired the change, and most importantly, what led to her 1st book ( JUST LAUNCHED YESTERDAY), COLD CASES: A True Crime Collection. Cheyna and I had a great chat about all aspects of true crime, including which victims we care about and why. We spend sometime discussing the Freeway Phantom Killings and why the victims - all young women of color, received far less media coverage than their white victim counterparts. The case remains unsolved and the 6 families have not received closure or justice.

He is just a walking, talking encyclopedia of true crime factoids, stats, history and stories! I am upping my true crime trivia game thanks to Harold.
Hi latest book, RIPPED FROM THE HEADLINES, released yesterday. I highly recommend this book if you love true crime or movies, and espeically if you love both. Each chapter is based on a popular film and the true crime case or story it is based on. Did you know the following movies have roots in true crime? The Fugitive, Alpha Dogs, SCREAM, Dirty Harry, The Hills Have Eyes and so many more. Let's embark on a reading journey that will surely frighten, amaze, confound and entertain you.

We talk a lot about definitions of terms we are hearing a lot right now: civil rights violation vs. hate crime, defunding police vs. police reform. Tim Pilleri + Lance Reenstierna | Crawlspace Network
My guests today need no introduction: Please welcome the Crawlspace Network Founders, Missing Maura Murray Creators, and fixtures of the true crime community: Tim Pilleri + Lance Reenstierna.
You might know a little about these two already, but you’re going to learn a lot. What is Lance reading these days, do the guys even watch true crime shows, was Tim’s Mom a murderino?!? I promise these two deliver as always in this laugh filled hour, but you will also learn they do so much more than you realize. They are content machines - but with heart. Check out their in house shows Missing Maura Murray, Empty Frames, pi-rational, Life Of, and more! Additionally, they host a portfolio of podcasts hosted by other creators ( some you will recognize as past DIE-ALOGUE guests) that you should also check out. AND, if you still have time in your schedule, check out their documentary Finding Maura Murray on Amazon Prime, and their Oxygen special, The Disappearance of Maura Murray.
I have to mention that these two are so passionate about missing person and cold cases, pretty much all that they do stems from a genuine desire to bring justice to families of victims. They both sit on the board of Private Investigations For the Missing — a non-profit created by Bruce Mailtlin.
Finally, Listen for the big announcement at the end of this episode to learn what’s new with DIE-ALOGUE! Thank you Tim and Lance for killing the small talk and making me laugh and part of the family.

Andre Matthews | Bruh Issa Murder
Say hello to my lovely guest and new friend, Andre Matthews: creator and host of 'Bruh Issa Murder.' We get to the meaning and story behind that title straight out the gate, but essentially, it's a statement of the obvious that so many of us have experienced while watching a story about a possible accident or maybe a murder... bruh, issa murder.
Andre shares how he's a voracious true crime consumer, but failed to see the cases and stories featuring of people of color and LGBTQ folks. He set out to shine a light on these cases, with some dumb crimes and creepy pasta thrown in for good measure. Andres also shares a victim's story AND a murder case that I have NEVER heard of that made me wanting to know more. I know you will find Andre to be as amazing as I did, and you should check out his show if you haven't already. Mark McClish | Statement Analysis
Truth and Lies - both are critical elements in discerning what happened in most true crime cases. I speak with an interview expert, Mark McClish, who in addition to a 26 year in federal law enforcement, developed a technique called Statement Analysis, which helps him ascertain if a person’s statements - written or oral - are truthful. We discuss truthfulness at large and how humans generally do not want to lie. You will learn why “never” is a problematic word, and I ask him about one of the principles from his book: BELIEVE WHAT PEOPLE TELL YOU. We unpack this for a bit.
While we touch on several high profile cases and statements made by related individuals, I ask him specifically about a case that he used as an example in his book, “I Know You are Lying.” the statement is a 1993 video interview by Michael Jackson in response to allegations of molesting a child. I am including a link to the interview here. It will give context and might be helpful as we talk about some of those words.
You can learn more about Mark’s work and books on his website:http://statementanalysis.com/

In today’s show, you will also hear a brief message at the top about how I am processing and seeking to understand the conversation around race and justice in our country. I want this to be an ongoing conversation, so please feel free to get in touch with me. There are many ways!

Podcast Blackout | Podcasters for Justice | BLACK LIVES MATTER
In lieu of a new episode today, I am participating in a podcast blackout and Podcasters for Justice as a way to peacefully protest the racism we continue to witness and experience every day in America. I am enraged and heartbroken over the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd. I know this list is tragically incomplete. The following statement was created by Danielle Des and Tangia Al-awaji Estrada, both voices in the WOC Podcaster Community:
We are podcasters united to condemn the tragic murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor and many many others at the hands of police. This is a continuation of the systemic racism pervasive in our country since its inception and we are committed to standing against racism in all its forms.
We believe that to be silent is to be complicit.
We believe that Black lives matter.
We believe that Black lives are more important than property.
We believe that we have a responsibility to use our platforms to speak out against this injustice whenever and wherever we are witness to it.
In creating digital media we have built audiences that return week after week to hear our voices and we will use our voices to speak against anti-blackness and police brutality, and we encourage our audiences to be educated, engaged, and to take action.

Javier Leiva + John Taylor | Criminal Conduct Podcast
What do you get when two individual true crime podcasters with unique but complimentary skillsets team up to create one together? A fantastic podcast and a great interview on DIE-ALOGUE.
Javier Leiva and John Taylor each have their own successful podcasts. PRETEND Radio and Twisted, respectfully. They collaborated to tell the story of the mysterious death of Michelle O'Connel, and the murder of Eli Washtock. If that's confusing at all, start listening to their show, Criminal Conduct, now. Wait, first listen to them share their creative process, behind the scenes investigation stories, and how their interest in the darker side of things first started for both of them.

Jim Rathman | Real Life Real Crime Podcast
Detective?CHECK. Bronze Star Army Vet? CHECK. Former Secret Service Agent? CHECK. Hit Podcast host? CHECK. Is there anything today's guest can't do?!? Say hello to Jim Rathman, the other half of Real Life Real Crime; we had his other half, Woody Overton on episode 33.
Jim walks me through his career and how he's happily landed where he is, investigating cold cases that desperately need attention. Jim and Woody balance their vast talents and skillsets to bring answers and closure ( if that's even possible) to families of victims. Jim shares a lot about the Courtney Coco case which the two of them were instrumental in helping crack, though charges still have not been brought. Listen to find out why.
Jim has stayed busy during Quarantine focusing on a missing persons case that you just might have heard of... does the name Don Lewis mean anything to you? #tigerking
Kirk write a three part series on his experience aptly titled "Trapped with Ms. Arias." You can find those as well as books on weight loss and wellness here.
Keep up with Jim on social and be sure to check out Real Life Real Crime where Jim and Woody share real cases they worked from their careers and they tackle important issues like trauma and suicide within law enforcement.

Kirk Nurmi | Defense Attorney for Jodi Arias, Survivor + Author
I am so glad I had this conversation. I was apprehensive because I wasn't sure if I agreed with a lawyer publishing a tell all memoir about a client, but I let Kirk tell his story and it became clear that staying silent was not an option. His life was completely taken over by the case, the trials, and by Ms. Arias herself.
In this episode, Kirk shares what that was like, how it impacted him, and how he came to the other side. Don't want to spoil anything, but there is light on the other side, and Kirk is doing great. Talking with him made me deeply empathetic toward him and also brought up incredibly troubling aspects of our justice system that do not have easy answers; cameras in court room, media coverage, and more.
Kirk write a three part series on his experience aptly titled "Trapped with Ms. Arias." You can find those as well as books on weight loss and wellness here.

Mandy + Melissa | Moms and Murder Podcast
Did I just interview the nicest women in true crime? Possibly, but don't discount nice because these two have one of the most successful true crime podcasts out there, and you are going to hear all about how they started it (spontaneously!) and how they keep it going after nearly three years ( divide and conquer!).
My guests today, Melissa and Mandy, were a ton of fun to interview and their dynamic is everything I hoped it would be. We get candid about why we like true crime, what we don't like so much about true crime, and who they would like to have as a guest on their show... or WOULD THEY? ( dateline style)
Also, one of them is an enneagram 6 and one is a 7 -any guesses?
Happy Almost Mother's Day to anyone celebrating, enjoy these OG ( not old) true crime mamas.

BONUS RE-release of Episode 4 w/ Kevin Balfe | Creator of CrimeCon
Since many of us planned to be at CrimeCon today (sniff sniff), I thought it would be fun to re-release my FOURTH episode with CrimeCon creator, Kevin Balfe. It's pretty to cool hear how his crazy idea turned into the iconic event so many of us know and love - and look forward to! SEE YOU ON HALLOWEEN in Orlando, friends! ( Use code DIEALOGUE20 for 10% off your pass!)
Enjoy!
The man behind CrimeCon is our guest today! Kevin Balfe was so gracious and fun and smart - I really enjoyed talking with him. He is a true crime loving entrepreneur which is probably why I like him so much. In addition to digging deep into our love for the true crime genre, I also got some great intel on the year ahead for CrimeCon, including a little breaking news event announcement for later this year!
If you haven't been to CrimeCon, this is an amazing opportunity to learn more about the spirit behind the event and how it's changing and growing. If you are already a CrimeCon aficionado, you'll love the behind the scenes dirt!

Karen Smith | Forensic Investigator + Host of 'Shattered Souls' Podcast
Karen Smith is a forensic investigator who is parlaying her years of experience into a new podcast - presented by CrimeCon - called Shattered Souls: a Forensic Detective's Diary. The podcast premieres May 9, so stay tuned and be sure to listen!
For now, you can listen to episode 41 of DIE-ALOGUE and hear Karen share how she came to be a crime scene investigator (you might be surprised), and how her work has shaped who she is. Her expertise has been called upon to consult for civil and criminal cases, and by the likes of CNN, HLN, among others. I just had to ask about working with a certain Ms. Nancy Grace, and her answer satisfied. I admitted I get nervous for the experts she has call into her show, but Karen assured me I needn't worry. Karen of course has a lot to say about true crime, but it's victims and justice that she cares the most about.
Karen is also quite the creative which I was energized by. I hope you leave the episode as encouraged as I did!

Matt Sprouse | True Crime TV Producer + Storyteller
Casey Anthony's Parents Speak, The Staircase: an American Murder Mystery, The Killing of Jon Benet: The Final Suspects Podcast. These are but a few of the projects my guest produced. Today I speak with a man who has VAST experience telling true crime stories. Not just any true crime stories- the ones we all know and...love? Hate to love? Love to hate? It depends on who you are, I suppose. Matt Sprouse is a TV Producer who led Jupiter Entertainment's programming for years, but is out on his own now. He was always looking for ways to tell these headline stories in the most human, respectful, yet compelling ways.
I know you will love today's conversation because we get some inside scoop on these major cases, but also because we transcend that to tackle the larger issues that many of us wrestle with as we consume true crime. Also, Matt surprised me with a personal connection to a high profile case that shaped how he approached true crime. ( hint: it caused him to AVOID it for a long time) Listen to find out which story.
Also he just sold a project that is in in development ( though paused because of COVID19), and he couldn't publicly share which case it is, but he told me off the record, and OMG, I cannot wait for it. I will share as soon as he gives me the green light.
For Matt's full list of projects, you can check out his work on IMDB, and this is his production company, York + Wilder's site.
I am thankful to Matt for killing the small talk!

So excited today's conversation with you. I was a *little* intimidated to interview these guys ( did you SEE their pictures? Check out my instagram: @diealoguepod), but I had little reason to fear. Kevin + Lou are warm, kind, and most impressive, candid about their stories - personally and professionally. This is one of the traits I admire most in people and appreciate most in a guest!
Yes, you will hear about their FASCINATING careers - how they started and what a "typical" day looked like as undercover ATF agent (Kevin), and a homicide detective (Lou), but you will also hear about their struggles and how they sought help and now help others who have experienced trauma in their work.
Please check out their podcast - they are talking to some really interesting people and they often tackle issues of mental health in law enforcement. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/end-of-watch-with-bootsy-sal/id1481870424

Bill Thomas + Kristin Dilley | Mind Over Murder Podcast
Hello, DIE- HARDS! How are we doing? Things are changing quickly, and you will note the chatter about coronavirus is in most episodes coming out now, but we didn't always know how serious it was when we recorded. I get it now. IT'S SERIOUS. My family is safe at home, I am working remotely, overseeing online school for the kids and staying in as much as possible. I hope today's episode, and all the ones forthcoming, offer you some comfort, joy, distraction, peace, or a chuckle - if only for an hour or so.
I spoke with two good souls, doing great work in today's episode. Bill Thomas, a victim's advocate after the devastating loss of his sister, Cathy Thomas along with her girlfriend, Rebecca Dowski — the first two victims in the Colonial Parkway Murders ,which claimed the lives of eight people in and around Williamsburg from 1986 to 1989.
Bill + Kristin teamed up and together, they moderate the Colonial Parkway Murders page on Facebook with nearly 10,000 followers and recently launched the podcast, Mind over Murder. (hear all about what cases they cover and why in our conversation)

Rebekah Heath | Librarian + Citizen Detective, "Bear Brook Murders"
I have been wanting to interview Rebekah Heath since I learned of her involvement with the Bear Brook case which I discovered by listening to the stellar podcast, Bear Brook. I finally got a hold of her, and was thrilled she agreed to talk with me. Rebekah is an amazing example of the power of citizen detective work, and inspires me to do more, to pay closer attention, and to remember why we are all here.
Rebekah Heath was instrumental in helping to identify the victims found in barrels in 1985 + 2000 in New Hampshire: those females were: Marlyse Honeychurch, Marie Vaughn, and Sarah McWaters. Hear how exactly Rebekah connected the dots, and please note there is still one unidentified girl. Let's keep this case at the forefront so we can give her back her name as well.
Rebekah will be on an upcoming 2 hour special on ABC's 20/20 this Friday, March 20 - tune in if you can. She will also be speaking at CrimeCon2020. ( if you register use code DIEALOGUE20 for 10% off!)
I am so grateful for Rebekah's candor in sharing her story.
Woody Overton | Real Life Real Crime Podcast
Well, I wanted a law enforcement guest, and I got one. Woody Overton is currently host of the unbelievably successful podcast, REAL LIFE REAL CRIME, where he shares real cases he directly worked in over his long career. He started out as a corrections officer, moved to detective, then a state criminal investigator, became polygraph certified ( Oh man, did we discuss the polygraph!), and currently serves as an expert witness in trials all over the country. He is full of southern charm and stories and I am honored he was willing to kill the small talk! Thank you, Woody! I hope to chat with his podcast partner, Jim Rathman, next time.
Listen to REAL LIFE, REAL CRIME wherever you get podcasts and check out their website because they very well could be doing a live show near you.
Kelli Jean Arnold | Fort Worth Trio Family Member
Welcome to Part 2 of my interview with Kelli Jean Arnold - second cousin to Rachel Trlica, on of the three girls dubbed The Fort Worth Trio. If you have not listened to Part 1 go back now and listen!
I am venturing into something different this week: a case in two parts. Kelli Jean Arnold - second cousin to Rachel Trlica, one of the 3 girls who missing from Fort Worth Texas in 1974, found my true crime trivia page - YELLOW TAPE, when we featured their story on Missing Monday.
Part 1: We struck up a conversation on Facebook and I invited her to tell her story on DIE-ALOGUE. I am honored she said yes.
Please note: I don't usually cover cases. I usually interview and while we might talk ABOUT cases, my podcast is not a source for the facts/timelines/details of a given case. Even in this one, Kelli Jean just shared info and memories with me, but I am not reporting on the events.
That said, at the top of the episode I do read a brief overview researched and written by Patty Whalen Ucciardino.
Other podcasts that I know of ( there are probably more) and that I listened to on this case include: True Crime Garage, Trace Evidence, and The Trail Went Cold.
Again, thank you to Kelli Jean for her willingness to share. We hope that sharing the story keeps it moving towards truth and peace for surviving family members.

Part 2 will release tomorrow.

Justin Evans | Generation Why Podcast
Before there was SERIAL, there was Generation Why. Justin Evans is one half of Generation WHY - the actual OG of true crime podcasts. He's also the one of the kindest guys in podcasting if you ask me.
What a thrill to speak with him, hear about the early days of true crime podcasting, how he keeps it fresh with Aaron after 8 years, and where he finds himself now. He's also the host of The Peripheral podcast which I am particularly loving as it brings these PERIPHERAL topics around true crime, straight to the top...it's very raw and vulnerable. I like it. Justin and I recorded in NYC and my only regret is that we didn't have more time.
Thank you, Justin, killing the small talk, and I hope to continue the DIE-ALOGUE!
Check out his show, The Peripheral wherever you get your podcasts.
