Favorite things right now:
S2 E3: Free Speech
Free Speech/Freedom of Speech: the right to express any opinions without censorship or restraint. Book bans? Congresspeople being removed from the floor? Gutting public education? The USA is a hot mess right now. A country that prides itself on freedom is being influenced and led by a small minority controlling, harming, and misleading so many of us. Let's talk about how free speech is being attacked and how political leaders, figureheads, and influential people are engaging in insidious ways.

S2 E1: Cancel Culture
Cancel Culture: the practice or tendency of engaging in mass canceling as a way of expressing disapproval and exerting social pressure.
You probably are not very active on the internet or with any media if you have not heard the term "cancel culture" thrown around. This is a fascinating topic that is decisive across all demographics. Today we discuss a brief history and our personal understanding of cancel culture. We also explore how, when, and why it has transformed over the last decade.
Access research paper on cancel culture here.
Note: at the time of recording/publishing this episode we want everyone to take time and space to take care of yourselves. There have been multiple mass shootings, the murder of Tyre Nichols recently occurred, and there are countless bills being proposed to harm people. S2 E0: New Beginnings
Hello!
Checking in at 8:36 PM on New Years' Eve 2022. We are excited about what next year will bring and want to let any and everyone listening know that we intend to commit more time to this podcast and to be more consistent. No, this is not a "resolution" it just so happens we are making these decisions around the start of 2023... okay... :D
We want to expand beyond single words and might have more direct references to topics but our intention is to keep it similar. Dirty Words is just a few friends talking about their thoughts and opinions on pop culture and politics. Occasionally we hope to bring in guests as we did with our Suicide episode because there are a lot of other people who have really important things to say and share.
Thank you for joining and/or sticking around and get ready for Season 2 of Dirty Words!!
Obsessions:
S1 E13: Suicide
Suicide is death caused by injuring oneself with the intent to die
National Suicide Lifeline
Katie Ellison contacted us after our first episode. She presented the word Suicide and shared her story with us. Katie has a personal history with suicide and has a background in suicide prevention. This episode is a bit longer than usual but we address important and challenging topics. Parts of this discussion might be tough for some of our audience so please do what you need to take care of yourself (even if that means clicking off). Thank you for tuning in and listening to Katie share her story and expertise.
Katie works in Firearm Suicide Prevention for the Missouri Institute of Mental Health as well as runs her own suicidie prevention consulting business, Semicolon Consulting. In this epsiode we discuss who Katie is and why she chose her field in suicide prevention. We go into details about what community response looks like, what is contagion, and what can you do to help (yourself or others). Time stamps for topics discussed are at the bottom of this episode description.

S1 E12: Roe
From Roe v Wade "a landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in which the Court ruled that the Constitution of the United States generally protects a pregnant woman's (person's) liberty to choose to have an abortion"
Link to Reproductive Justice Resources
F*** it. That is all we can really say. There has been a lot going on politically from hate crimes to mass shootings to Republicans wanting to know what is in children's pants. The Supreme Court of the United States has spent the end of its session pushing through some of the most egregious decisions we have seen in our modern time. From federally allowing concealed carry to demanding states fund private religious schools to Roe v Wade being overturned. SCOTUS is not ruling on any logical interpretation or for the people, they are judging based on their religious brainwashing and based on who is lining their pockets. We are f***ing over it. In this episode, we kind of just rant about what is happening but also give some action ideas for those that make it to the end. Please stick with us-- be mad with us. This sh*t is about to break (if you get the reference you're a real one).
*An Important note we mentioned in the podcast-- repo rights are about all genders. Abortions are about people with uteruses. This is not just solely about cis women. Within hours of the ruling, we have already seen them threaten marriage equality, contraception, and queer sex.

S1 E11: NFT
"a unique digital identifier that cannot be copied, substituted, or subdivided, that is recorded in a blockchain, and that is used to certify authenticity and ownership (as of a specific digital asset and specific rights relating to it)"
Welcome back with all three of us!! NFTs otherwise known as nonfungible tokens are not only hot in pop culture but in the future of currency and good exchange. Some of you might be experts congratulations on that! We are not. We did what research we could and tried to piece it all together, it is not that simple but somehow has become the measure for modernized people-owned currency, art, and goods. Sit back, relax, and say what the f*** with us as we work through what NFTs are and what their current impact is. For those that are going in with strong opinions just know all three of us are fans of technology advancements and equal access to goods and services, we are just a bit... confused? Come be confused with us and let's talk about why digital images are selling for 91 million dollars. Yes $91,000,000 all those zeroes are correct.

S1 E10: Resolution
"a firm decision to do or to not do something"
We made it to 2022! We are grateful for the people and places that got us here because we know we lost so many people in the last 365 days. This word is not, on the surface, very controversial but we realized there is so much weight around resolutions. There is a lot of pressure to make sure you had an Instagram/TikTok worthy year or that you pick the right resolutions to have the fanciest recap at the end of this new year. Something that should be very freeing, motivating, or fun has turned into a business venture or a popularity contest. Guess what? This time is for you. Make twenty resolutions or make none. Give up on all of them or complete one. Who cares it is for you. As you bring in this new year be gentle with yourself and take a little time to do something you have been dreaming of
S1 E9: Pro-life
"opposing abortion and euthanasia."
We are declaring now that we are pro-life. Plot twist it is not that bullsh*t definition above. Today we talk about what pro-life really means to us and how it has been co-opted for something much more cruel. On top of that what the heck is going on at the Supreme Court and how can all of these politicians be "pro-life"... really anti-choice, but ignore all the gun violence happening across the country and pretend Covid has not taken so many lives. Our hearts are with those in Michigan, it is close to where Alex and Marisa grew up. On a different note, this should make you mad. It makes us mad. If you stick around till the end we preformed a little skit for all of you!

S1 E8: Nipple
"the small projection in which the mammary ducts of female mammals terminate and from which milk can be secreted." we take some issues with this definition but it was the first one that came up.
So... today's episode was filmed later at night than usual and is a little extra... chaotic. Join us in ranting about body shaming and censorship :). This was inspired by a Devin but Better video on the "golden nipple" trend that seems to be emerging. We delve into social media censorship, free the nipple, and our personal experiences with being policed for our bodies (particularly at work). We know everyone across gender and age can probably come up with an example or time when they were shamed, forced to change, or sexualized for just... existing. Nipples are not inherently sexual but they have become a marker of sexuality for some, leading to very gendered dress codes, harassment, and social acceptance of the previous things. PS we are doing a giveaway there are a few more days to enter!! Head to our IG to check it out. Thank you for listening.

S1 E7: Vaccine
"a substance used to stimulate the production of antibodies and provide immunity against one or several diseases, prepared from the causative agent of a disease, its products, or a synthetic substitute, treated to act as an antigen without inducing the disease."
In today's episode, we just talked about what is happening and why we are at home. We had to take a bit of a break so welcome back! We thought it was a good idea to talk about how vaccines are being perceived and our personal opinions on them. Disclaimer, we are not doctors. This is information/thoughts we have gathered over the years, witnessed ourselves, or learned through the internet. To anyone who cannot get the vaccine for medical or access reasons please stay safe. To those that have been personally impacted by this panini, our hearts go out to you.

S1: Interlude
In this episode we took a moment to catch up and chat about what's been going on in our lives. To our friends and listeners, thank you for encouraging messages and for always listening. We love you all and your support
S1 E6: No
CW: sexual violence, general violence, abuse, coercion
In this episode we had a chat about the word no. When, how, and who can say it. With that, we delved into the lack of respect or acknowledgment of a no is the foundation of rape culture. Norms that are ingrained in many of us at a very early age. Thank you for the instagram message that helped spark this conversation.
To suvivors of violence we stand with you. We believe and support you. We are sorry and wish we could have done more as a society to protect you

S1 E5: Abortion
CW: racism, abortion, assault
In this episode we get into the debate over abortion. Well less of a debate on our side, more of a conservation about personal experience, education, and day-to-day knowledge on reproductive rights. Currently some of the most restrictive abortion bans/laws are being passed across the USA it seems in an effort to overturn Roe v Wade.

trans·gen·der /transˈjendər,tranzˈjendər/ - “denoting or relating to a person whose sense of personal identity and gender does not correspond with their birth sex.”
CW: transphobia, suicide, transphobia, assault, discrimination
In this epsidoe we give a brief 101 about what gender, cis and trans, means. We also get into the heated topic of anti-trans bills and laws being passed. To anyone that may be affected by this know that we stand with you and are doing what we can to support/fight for change. You deserve to be you.

S1 E3: Panorama
pan·o·ram·a /ˌpanəˈramə,ˌpanəˈrämə/ - An alias for pandemic “a disease outbreak that spreads across countries or continents”
In this episode we tackle the panorama (aka pandemic). But how can we talk about COVID and vaccinations without properly informing everyone of the side effects. Natasha Bedingfield and Ms. momma vaccine, Dolly Patron both provide excellent examples of possible side effects.

CW: drug use, overdoses, sexual abuse, racism, & murder.
