Untangle Your Past: Dr. Joan Peters on the Power of Therapy & Self Reflection

IN THIS EPISODE, I talk with Dr. Joan Peters: a professor emerita from California State University. She recently wrote a memoir about her experience with talk therapy, and the benefits of psychoanalysis (analyzing how our childhood experiences and subconscious beliefs end up impacting our adult behavior and decisions).
This episode isn't about research and academics! It's just two "gals" talking about therapy, and one of them (Dr. Peters) just happens to be a professor with a PhD! We chat about Joan's personal experience with therapy and the many ways that psychoanalysis helped her, especially when she was in her twenties. Therapy sessions completely eliminated her recurring nightmares!
Joan's stories about her therapy journey are electric and enlightening! We take a deep dive into the benefits of therapy, and how psychoanalysis helped her make sense of (and dissolve) old childhood fears.

The single life also gives you extra time for friends, family, and working on goals (fitness goals, career goals, etc).
I also talk about love as MORE than just a romantic feeling between two people, but as an inspirational energy that motivates us ALL to do the things that make our hearts happy!

Boundaries, Standards & Cutting the Cord

IN THIS EPISODE: We're talking about boundaries, standards, and cutting the cord to past resentments, old hurts, or people and experiences that you've already moved on from in life, but you keep thinking about or fixating on in your mind.
If you've been preoccupied or distracted by the past, tune in! Cut ties to anything that's still draining your energy in the new year. The cord cutting meditation starts 11 minutes into the episode, toward the end. You can do the practice anytime. The new year is a great time to cut any cords to things that no longer serve you: anything that weighs you down or feels like a ball and chain.
Cut the cord. Free yourself. Shift your focus in the new year!
Today, we're talking about what standards and boundaries are. I mention the book, "Boundaries," in this episode, so go ahead and click here to check out the book! It's been around for a long time and it's quite popular.
I also mention author and researcher Brene Brown. She gives some great advice about boundaries! Here is some of her advice:
1. Make a mantra like "It's better to set a boundary and feel awkward about it, then to have no boundaries and feel resentment about it." Say the mantra to yourself, or write it down.
2. Rehearse setting your boundaries out loud! Just say to yourself "my plate is full" or "I need alone time" or "I've already got enough going on" and rehearse those statements out loud while you vacuum your floor, drive to work, or wash your dishes.
Basically, YOU decide what's ok with you, and what's not ok, when it comes to what you need and what other people (your kids, co-workers, friends, etc) want from you. Prioritize your own needs.
Boundaries are great because YOU decide what to say "yes" to and "no" to. YOU decide when to accept or decline an invitation to go somewhere. YOU decide how to spend your free time, what to focus on, who to talk to, and how often.

I'm talking about my experience at her speech because it was an incredible reminder that, while it is certainly SO important to look on the bright side, think fearless thoughts, dissolve self-doubt, use positive self-talk, and take action in spite of fear - sometimes it just really helps to feel it. Feeling is healing. Feel your emotions and where they stem from. Our feelings and beliefs usually come from way back in childhood, or from a variety of past experiences. Listen to the fear deep inside of you! Hear yourself out. Tune into your emotions. When we pay attention to the parts of us that feel scared or left behind, we actually grow! When you notice your fear, then it doesn't need to run the show anymore - YOU can run the show! So many of us tend to stuff our fear deep down inside, and then the fear ends up running us, and driving our behavior. Let yourself be pulled by a beautiful vision of YOUR best life - rather than pushed into action by old fears or past pain. "Your pain pushes you, until your vision pulls you." - Michael Beckwith Underneath our fear, emotions, patterns, and conditioning, is our true nature! This episode features a breathing practice called the "physiological sigh," which is a term coined by Dr. Andrew Huberman. I'm a huge fan of Dr. Huberman and his health and wellness advice. Today, you can "try the sigh" with a special twist! As you exhale, you'll focus on a wish you have deep down in your heart: a dream come true that you are ready to manifest in your life. Plus, the breathing practice is great for your health! Some benefits include: more oxygen in your lungs (less CO2), inflated and healthy lung sacs, a slower heart rate, a relaxed body, and a significant reduction in stress and anxiety. This practice is great if you're in the midst of a stressful situation and you need some calm in your body and mind. Plus, in this episode, we are not only breathing and relaxing. We're also focusing on a making a wish and setting an intention for what we want to create in life!

Easy Breezy BOX BREATHING
Show #63! SEASON 2, Episode 19: Welcome to the disSOLViNG fear podcast! This episode puts a new spin on a tried and true breathing practice: Box Breathing. Even Navy SEALS practice box breathing as a way to deal with the stress of high pressure situations. Box Breathing can help anyone maintain a calm and regulated nervous system. I love it, and it is my TOP breathing recommendation if you want to experience FULL BODY RELAXATION after a brief breathing session! While you breathe along in this episode, I recommend breathing in through your nose, holding the inhalation for three seconds, then blowing out through your mouth, holding the emptiness of the exhalation for three seconds, and inhaling into your lungs from the bottom up, as if you are filling up a glass of water with your breath. Everything is done to the count of three. Tune in and save the episode so you can enjoy box breathing again and again, anytime!

A Six-Minute, Empowering "EFT Tapping Session" to Weed Out Fear!
Show #60! SEASON 2, Episode 16: Welcome to the disSOLViNG fear podcast! In this episode, LMFT Brinn Langdale leads us through six minutes of EFT Tapping. EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Technique. We are freeing our fear and anxiety, in this EFT Tapping session!
The actual tapping practice starts 4 minutes into the episode, and ends 6 minutes later, with some fun conversation before and after the session. Like most tapping sessions, we tap on our foreheads (between the eyebrows), on the top of our head, under our eyes, on our chest (below the collar bones), and in a few other places. The idea behind EFT Tapping is that you release stuck emotions by tapping on energy points on your body. It works!
Contrary to popular belief, when we focus on our fear and anxiety, it does NOT grow stronger, it dissolves. WE grow stronger when we face our fear, tap into it, look at it, and release it with practices like EFT Tapping.
When it comes to fear, SEE it so that you don't have to BE it. Look inside at the fear and anxiety, and it will disSOLVE - especially with your favorite practices. Tapping is one of my faves. I also enjoy walking to process my stuck emotions, and release any baggage that I feel in my body and mind.

In this episode, my guests include inmate Jennifer Hughes, Sheriff Karl Leonard, and HARP program manager Bailey Hilliard, MSW. HARP stands for Helping Addicts Recover Progressively, and one important component of the HARP program is EFT Tapping, also known as "tapping." Simple and effective! Studies at Harvard have shown that "tapping" helps people defuse many types of explosive, overwhelming, and painful emotions. Tapping can help us all whenever we're emotionally triggered and want to get grounded.

Enjoy a 10-minute cool and cozy meditation with the hum of a fan in the background. The white noise of the fan makes this an excellent meditation to do before bed. Cool down and enjoy.
Beat the heat. Watch it disSOLVE and evaporate off your chest like the steam off a hot cup of tea. Blow off steam like the fan blowing the hot air out the window.
This meditation is great on a hot day, a humid night, or when anger and frustration flares up and you're done holding onto it. Let go of the heat.
