2. Musical Yearnings, The ritual of 'piping in' a new home, 'Me Too' in folk music and the real nitty gritty of being a musician. Laura Cannell talks to Northumbrian Piper Kathryn Tickell.
Today I’m joined by the amazing and inspiring Kathryn Tickell. She plays Northumbrian pipes and fiddle. Is a composer, performer, educator and recording artist whose work is deeply rooted in the landscape and people of Northumbria.
She has an OBE which recognises her incredible career which she began by learning tunes from shepherds in the rural community where she grew up. We’ve known each other for a few years and I’ve been listening to her albums for over 20 years, we have a long conversation covering all sorts of subjects including her latest album Hollowbone, the ‘Me Too’ movement in Folk and traditional music, performance advice, feelings of yearning in music, Hadrian’s Wall and her favourites drones! Plus a lot more! Expect tangents as we improvise our way through a conversation about being a musician.
