Wellllllll hiiii! Yes, it’s us, your old friends; we’re back baby! After 476 days with no new episodes we thought it was about time we got back on the horse. We missed youuu! We’re not back to our old tricks entirely; we’ll just record episodes when we have the time/space/bandwidth, but we’ll be sure to let you know movies for our future episodes at least a week in advance so you can still play along!



To find our feet again, this brand new episode for 2023 features a 30min catch up on our lives and lots of the movies we’ve seen over the past 15 months, and then us doing what we do best after watching ‘Sleepless in Seattle’ (1993). Did we find the characters unhinged? Yes. Do we confuse our Bill Paxtons with our Bill Pullmans? Yes. Does Patrick have any general working knowledge of the Apollo missions? TBD.

PEW PEW PEW [insert quoteable phrase for acton figure here] KABOOM! It’s action week, kids! We’re walking beyond where the sun touches into new shadowland. Well, kinda, coz Patrick watched both of these movies quite a bit as a kid, but evidently didn’t properly take them in or appreciate them. We hit up two real classics this week with ‘Speed’ (1994) and ‘Terminator 2: Judgement Day’ (1991), and have an absolute ball! We feed some shrimp, there’s yet another episode of Patrick’s Queer Awakenings in Cinema, and Emma decides that parody is NOT comedy, and actually being on a bus with a bomb on it is NOT a laughing matter.

We’re slipping back in time to 1999 again this week for our second edition of 1999 Week, and our fourth edition of People’s Choice week. These two films were the third and fourth most popular choices in our polls, and make for a really wonderful pairing. ‘Magnolia’ (1999) confused and tested us with its labyrinthine 24hr plot with inter-tangled, fractured narratives, and ‘Jawbreaker’ delighted with its unique pairing of dark and camp. Both of these films SCREAM the 90s, and honestly, we couldn’t be happier. Pull up an inflatable couch, pop out a jawbreaker (or gobstopper, if your Strayan), shut the f*#k up, and don't call me lady!

This week we hit up our master list and committed to doing two big ones that we REALLY should have seen. Two films that were wildly different. And little did we know that we’d find resonances across them both… and here we have Underdog Week. ‘Rocky’ (1976) and ‘Legally Blonde’ (2001); two films about (contextually speaking) an underdog who we have no chance but to root for as they overcome ridiculous hurdles and display incredible tenacity and discover what really matters. And for good measure, a fantastic longform version of the story of Patrick moving house, and a discussion that lingers probably a bit too long on the topic of analingus. Bon appétit!

This is People’s Choice Week Vol. 3, but more notably the first episode in a new series we’ve started where we watch films from 1999 - one of, arguably, the greatest years of cinema. We kicked things off with a poll across all our socials of 8 films that neither of us had seen and the two that were clearly at the top of everyone’s wishlist were ‘Being John Malkovich’ (1999) and ‘Cruel Intentions’ (1999). This week we explore the metaphysical, the metaphorical and the metaphrased bastardised French pronunciation of Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. Oh, and seamlessly (you’ll never notice) Patrick moves house in the middle of the episode with Emma’s assistance. You’ll be hearing about it forever, don’t worry. We’re still in lockdown and we’re tackling two films by the great man himself this week: Steven Spielberg. Patrick has shockingly never seen  ‘E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial’ (1982) before, and neither Patrick nor Emma have seen the chilling and legendary ‘Jaws’ (1975), but this week we watch ‘em both. Of course, we can’t help but talk about Catholicism (again), Patrick gets his first ‘jab’ mid-episode, and we talk about all sorts of random shit, but this is a good one folks, we lock in to our movie nerd-dom properly this week. Both of these films command reverence and respect, what a shame we’re the two people to be trusted with such a task… (no ramen was pissed into this week).

Well, Covid done got us again girl. We’ve been locked down, but a silly pandemic isn’t gonna get in the way of us talking shit, so we bought a second microphone, set up Emma in 3 different rooms in her house, ultimately settling on the backseat of a car as a recording studio, and struggled for 90min to get semi-podcast quality recorded conversation while in different houses. But it was WORTH IT because this week’s films were bangers, Disney’s ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ (1996) and Dreamworks’ ‘The Prince of Egypt’ (1998) - two huge vaguely religiously themed animated family features that Emma somehow missed seeing. Also, they’re musicals! Could these be more up our alley?

“America! America! / God shed His grace on thee / And crown thy good with brotherhood / From sea to shining sea!” This week brings with it a double bill brought about by an immediate need to watch one of the selected films ahead of our visit to see ‘American Psycho: The Musical’ at the Opera House. ‘American Beauty’ (1999) has already been contextualised in Patrick’s filmic history on this podcast before, with Emma very excited to watch it for the first time, and we were both of us were thrilled for our first foray into the darkly comic ‘American Psycho’ (2000). This week, y’all, we get INTO it. The elephant in the room (rhymes with Devon Facey) is spoken about at length, and we dig a bit deeper with our analytical brains this week… we is smart. After cordially offering Emma the opportunity to discuss her two favourite movies on the podcast earlier this year, Patrick has been campaigning for the same opportunity. You spoke, and we listened… it’s our first People’s Choice Week! We asked you which movies you wanted us to watch via polls on our Instagram stories, and these were the two you all voted for most. ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’ (2001) and ‘Fight Club’ (1999). Two very contrasting films, which we love, one from either side of the millennium. Both of these films got under our skin in different ways, and we ended up going to strange places in our dissemination of them… is human breast milk vegan? Everything is up for debate! This week we talk role models, feminism, sadomasochistic eroticism, the nutritional qualities of blue soup, and come to the conclusion that some things are better left in the last century (like glorifying workplace sexual harassment for starters…)

This week we paid a visit to the oeuvre of auteur director Christopher Nolan. We're both fans of his work, but there are a couple Emma hadn't seen yet. First we veered out of our comfort zone to watch 'The Dark Knight' (2008) (after watching 2005's 'Batman Begins' for homework), and then back to something more aligned to our regular programming to watch 'Inception' (2010). That's 454 minutes (7hrs 34min) of cinema, folks. We are tired. But some excellent discoveries were made! Who would have known that Batman had something to do with Bats, and that Christopher and Jonathan Nolan are not just brothers but actually the same person!

As a treat to Emma for getting through two very scary movies last episode, this week we watched her two favourite movies, which Patrick has never seen and has been deliberately been putting off watching to antagonise her; ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ (1981) and ‘Back to the Future’ (1985). This episode brings with it a great deal of fascinating, intellectually stimulating discussion about SpaghettiOs, the ins and outs of famous tantrums from both testaments of the Bible, and just what exactly a Blu-ray Disc is, as well as a detailed update on the failings of Patrick’s love life. Somewhere in all that we talk about the films and Patrick manages to thirst over Michael J Fox, but uncomprehendingly forgets to do so for Harrison Ford.

This week we decided to choose two movies that just had absolutely no business in being corralled together, and actually had the best time. First up it’s ‘What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?’ (1962), the film that rebooted the careers of Bette Davis and Joan Crawford and started a whole new genre: hag horror. And then we move on to Avatar (2009), the dream-work a decade in the making from James Cameron; an overwhelmingly large film (maybe he’s compensating for something?) which seems pretty simple on paper… because that’s what it, in fact, is. If you like your movie stars fading and desperately clambering for relevance, and if you like your sci-fi overlong and unoriginal, or perhaps you just LOVE the Papyrus font, this episode is for you!

Halloween is over, but this week we took a trip down to the Spooky Southern Highlands to visit Patrick’s parents. After doing all the driving (proud!), taking her to see gardens of tulips and buying her a 24-slice ‘Colossal’ sized pizza that measured approx 100x50cm, Patrick finally convinced Emma to watch some movies that are actually scary. In this episode full of hilarious hi-jinx, we watch ‘The Ring’ (2002) and ‘The Cabin in the Woods’ (2011). Screams were screamed, faces were covered and unforgivable awful pranks were pulled to heighten the experience. Emma suffered for your entertainment this week, don’t let it be in vain…

It’s Halloween this week! Even though we don’t support importing American holidays and customs as a rule, and we think that trick or treating in Australia is about as stupid as it gets (especially during a pandemic), we thought it would be fun to be a lil’ bit spooky. But not too much! Emma can’t cope with scary movies, so we walked down a quirky, kooky spooky road and were haunted along the way by a brand new film for us both, ‘Death Becomes Her’ (1992), and an absolute classic that we hadn’t seen in aaaaages, ’Young Frankenstein’ (1974). By the time we’d finished taping this episode, Patrick convinced Emma to watch some genuinely scary movies next week. Stay tuned for some real horror very soon…

This week we crawled back into the single beds from our childhood (we’re pretending Emma doesn’t still sleep in hers) and watched a family favourite film that featured prominently in each of our childhoods. Patrick introduces Emma to ‘The Little Rascals’ (1994), and Emma introduces Patrick to ‘The Goonies’ (1985). We’re also announcing the films for the coming week at the end of each episode now, so you can watch ahead if you haven’t seen them! Because everybody loves homework, ja?

Our first ‘Double Bill’ episode has arrived, and this week on the bed we watched ‘The Shape of Water’ (2017) and ‘Moonlight’ (2018); two very recent Best Picture winners at the Academy Awards, that somehow the both of us managed to miss seeing despite our Oscars enthusiasm. SPOILER ALERT: This podcast contains extensive discussion of the plot of both of these films, so if you haven’t seen them and don’t want anything spoiled, make sure you watch them first. (Particularly ‘The Shape of Water’ which has a twist, of sorts.)
