Dr. Ana Background

Dr. Ana is extremely passionate about finding the root cause of illness and treating each person as the unique individual that they are. Her clinical interests include gastrointestinal disorders, endocrine disorders, chronic illness, sports medicine, chronic pain, women's health, and adolescent care. She truly believes that all systems in the body are connected and she utilizes this idea to help to restore balance in those who seek her care. She utilizes acupuncture, craniosacral, and visceral manipulation as integral parts to most treatment plans, as she believes that it is extremely important to restore connection between body, mind, and spirit. She evaluates laboratory work through a whole-body lens and incorporates nutrition counseling, nutraceuticals and herbal medicine as appropriate to the individual in front of her.

Dr. Ana deeply cares about health equity and improving access to naturopathic medicine and acupuncture to those in underserved communities. She believes that naturopathic medicine and acupuncture should not be restricted to only those who can afford to pay. She is an active member of the American Association for Naturopathic Physicians and has gone to Washington D.C. to lobby for naturopathic medicine.

Outside of the office, Dr. Ana loves spending time with her friends and family, especially her new addition, baby Maxwell. She and her husband are self-proclaimed foodies, so they are always exploring local restaurants and coffee shops. Dr. Ana is a runner, weight lifter, and nature explorer. In addition to exploring the outdoors, Dr. Ana is passionate about the arts. How We Can Support LGBTQIA+ Youth

A recent study conducted by the Williams Institute at UCLA estimated that roughly 10% of young people identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual, and nearly 1% identify as trans. These numbers are almost certainly underestimates. If you're a caring adult, you're take these numbers seriously and wondering how you can create a safe, inclusive and healthy environment for the young people in your life who may fall into these categories.

We talk a lot about sexual health, consent, gender, boundaries, self-love and body image in my clinic, and I'm honored that Coach Sommer Mahoney joined us today for a critical conversation about how to upskill so that we can support LGBTQIA+ youth as they navigate childhood, puberty, relationships, love, sex and more.

Coach Mahoney is uniquely equipped to educate us about this topic for a number of reasons. As a History and Global Studies teacher, Head Varsity Soccer Coach, Gay Straight Alliance advisor, dorm parent and Masters in Cultural Studies from Dartmouth (expected August 2022), Sommer has a unique persepective on our culture's approach to gender, sexuality and young people that few of us have. 1. You may think that you're depressed because you're going through treatment for subfertility. But what if you're depressed BECAUSE of low vitamin D, thyroid, B vitamin or amino acid status and THAT is impacting your fertility?   This is way more common that you think! There are a number of studies that suggest that correcting these nutrient deficiencies can improve chances of conception by 10-65%!  

2. What if the anxiety you're feeling about getting pregnant is actually due to low inositol, low zinc, or low magnesium? All of these nutrient deficiencies impact fertility, particularly men with sperm fragmentation issues or women with PCOS / insulin resistance as part of their picture. Have your doctor screen you for these common conditions to give yourself the chance to heal both anxiety and subfertility.   

3. The Mediterranean Diet can improve fertilty by 40-60%!

Powerlifting is Preventive Medicine

Powerlifting is one of my new favorite preventive medicines to recommend for people, because it does all of these things for you (and more)!

Weightlifting's Health Benefits

  1. Weightlifting increases bone density
  2. Weightlifting helps reverse osteoporosis and osteopenia
  3. Weightlifting increases muscle mass
  4. Weightlifting increases functional strength and balance
  5. Weightlifting boosts metabolic rate and reduces body fat
  6. Powerlifting increases testosterone and growth hormone
  7. Weightlifting Improves insulin sensitivity and helps reverse type 2 diabetes
  8. Weightlifting helps reverse hypertension
  9. Weightlifting improves libido
  10. Weightlifting decreases fatigue and improves energy
  11. Weightlifting can decreases chronic pain

Just try to name a pill that does all this!

You can’t. Because there isn’t one.

And if there was, it would certainly by a million dollars a dose.

Exercise is the intervention that promises to give you all of these benefits - without side effects - if done correctly.

It only has side benefits :)

The problems with exercise come in when you’re doing it wrong.

There are a number of ways to get exercise wrong.

Common Weightlifting Mistakes

  • You’re doing the wrong exercises for your body.
  • You haven’t fully healed injuries before lifting heavy weights.
  • You’re lifting with the wrong form.
  • You’re not on the right lifting schedule or program.
  • You have no idea what you’re doing in the gym and you’re just wandering around trying exercises you’ve seen on social media.
  • You haven’t had a movement screen from a physical therapist to determine what movements are safe and effective for you.
  • You’re working too hard or not hard enough.
  • No one has taught you how to exercise to reverse your specific health condition that you’re concerned about (high blood pressure, high blood sugar, etc.).
  • You’re not staying safe at the gym during cold and flu season.

Weightlifting and Osteoporosis / Osteopenia

If you've been diagnosed with osteopenia or osteoporosis (or it runs in your family), weightlifting and a mineral-rich, vitamin-rich diet are the best medicines for you. Before you try bisphosphonates, PLEASE, please, give me or Dr. Kresge a call. There is evidence (links above) that you can reverse osteoporosis with lifting and diet alone.
