DTVC Podcast 157, "Cinderella's Revenge"
In this episode I'm joined once again by screenwriter Tom Jolliffe, as we discuss his newest film, "Cinderella's Revenge," which I was able to see in the theater. He gives us some of the behind the scenes on some of the decisions that were made, or what he and the rest of the cast and crew were going for in a particular instance. Before we get into that though, we give our thoughts on the late Daniel Zirilli, who left us last week.
Check out "Cinderella's Revenge," starring Lauren Staerick and Natasha Henstridge, and produced by Mark L. Lester, in select theaters here in the US, and then look for it on streaming everywhere later this year.

DTVC Podcast 156, "Frankenhooker"
In this episode I'm joined by Freddie Young from Full Moon Reviews as we discuss "Frankenhooker." We get into Frank Henenlotter as a director, and how he uses New York City as a character. We also compare NYC and Times Square today versus when "Frankenhooker" was made, and how horror has changed over the years too.

DTVC Extra 23, The Predator franchise, "Predators," "The Predator," and "Prey"
"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode we're finishing our look at the Predator franchise with the three most recent films. With "Predators," I talk about the "cheek" of Robert Rodriguez to try and make this a sequel to the first Predator, when it's not as good as the real part 2. Then with "The Predator" I get into what went wrong with that one, and why it wasn't more successful. Finally, we finish with "Prey," which I really enjoyed.

Ty from Comeuppance Reviews is back, this time for our Eric Roberts birthday double feature, as we look at his two Top Gunner films for the Asylum. In the first one Roberts plays a grizzled colonel leading a training base under siege from the Russians; then in the second one, he's the president, trying to avoid WWIII. Finally, in our Spotlight on a Fight, we look at the end fight from the classic "Undefeatable."

DTVC Extra 22, The Predator franchise, "Alien vs. Predator" and "Alien vs. Predator: Requiem"
"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode we're continuing our look at the Predator franchise with the two Alien vs. Predator films. With the first one, I talk about the gap in time between Predator films, and how this was a film Predator fans were waiting for, but maybe not so much Aliens fans. I also chat about Predators that aren't hunters, like engineers and anthropologists. For the second one, I talk about where this one might miss the mark from the first one, but despite the poor critic reception, still did well at the box office.

DTVC Podcast 153, "The Dragon Lives Again" aka "Deadly Hands of Kung Fu"
In this episode I'm joined once again by Mitch from the Video Vacuum, as we look the Brucesploitation classic, "The Dragon Lives Again." What other movie can say Bruce Lee (Siu-Lung Leung aka Bruce Leong) teams up with Popeye, Kane, and the One-Armed Swordsman to take down Dracula, the Godfather, the Exorcist, Clint Eastwood, Zatoichi, and James Bond? DTVC Podcast 152, "Attack Force"
Scott Murphy from All 90s Action, All the Time and New Horror Express is back to discuss another Steven Seagal DTV flick, this time 2006's "Attack Force." We get into the history on this one, with how Seagal and screenwriting buddy Joe Halpin made one movie, but the distribution company wanted something else, so it was re-edited, reshot, and redubbed. Was worth it? Especially with the person they had dubbing over Seagal's voice?

DTVC Extra 21, The Predator Franchise, "Predator" and "Predator 2"
"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode we're starting our look at the Predator franchise with the first and second films. With the first one, I talk about this film's influence on me as an action fan, and its enduring legacy. For the second one, I talk about why I love this one, despite it not having the reputation the first one had

DTVC Podcast 151, "Hollow Point" and "Operation Black Ops"
Ty from Comeuppance Reviews is back for two more straight to streamers, this time we're looking at a third Daniel Zirilli film, "Hollow Point," starring Luke Goss and Jay Mohr. Is this one closer to "Phoenix" or "Invincible" in quality? And then for the second one, we look at the Tito Ortiz/Cris Cyborg actioner, "Operation Black Ops," and try to see if we can figure out is going on with that one. Finally, for our Spotlight on a Fight, we look at Stallone v Stone Cold Steve Austin in "Expendables."

DTVC Podcast 150, "Rage" and "Recoil"
In this episode I'm joined by Rich Hawes from the DTV Digest to discuss two Gary Daniels PM classics, "Rage" and "Recoil". In the opening hour or so, we discuss the current state of DTV action, and how the shift away from physical media is affecting that. From there we dig in on what makes "Rage" and "Recoil" such great films, from Daniels as the lead, to Spiro Razatos's action direction, breaking each one down individually.

DTVC Extra 20, MCU Phase 2, "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and "Ant-Man"
"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode we're continuing our look at the MCU Phase 2 with "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and "Ant-Man." Before that, I talk about the flop that was the 2015 "Fantastic Four" film. Then with "Avengers: Age of Ultron" I look at how that film compares with the first one, and how James Spader as Ultron's voice might be my favorite baddie so far. Finally, with "Ant-Man," I look at this as almost an after-thought film sandwiched between the Avengers film and the first film of Phase 3, "Captain America: Civil War," and then I further my thought from last week about how the MCU audience has aged out some, and how that affected the floor for movies like this going forward.

DTVC Podcast 149, "Replicant"
In this episode Sean Malloy of "I Must Break This Podcast" is back, and we're discussing the Van Damme film "Replicant." We get into a couple different aspects, one being Van Damme's performance and decision to take a role like this--or two roles, as it was. Another is the shrinking DTV action budget, and how a movie like this may not be made this well today.

In this episode I'm joined once again by screenwriter Tom Jolliffe, as we discuss the Dolph classic "Army of One" aka "The Joshua Tree." We get into how much fun this movie is, why it works, and why we don't see movies like this as much anymore.

DTVC Extra 19, MCU Phase 2, "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and "The Guardians of the Galaxy"
"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode we're continuing our look at the MCU Phase 2 with "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and "The Guardians of the Galaxy." Before that, I talk a bit about the last year of comic book movies, and where the genre might be going. Then with "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" I look at how that film compares with the first one, and also get into how the franchise is handing things over to Anthony Mackie. Finally, with "The Guardians of the Galaxy," I try to break down why the film was so successful, and how this film could be a template for future adaptations of lesser-known properties.

Ty from Comeuppance Reviews is back for two more straight to streamers, this time we're looking at two from Hulu. First we check out "Assassin," Bruce Willis's final film. Was this one worthy of that honor? How does it compare to the other Willis films we've looked at? After that we get into "The System," a prison flick starring Tyrese Gibson, Terrence Howard, and Jeremy Piven, who turns in a hilarious performance as the over-the-top corrupt warden.

DTVC Podcast 146, Vinne Jones Double Feature: "The Big Ugly" and "Bullet Proof"
In this episode I'm joined once again by Will from Exploding Helicopter, this time to look at two films starring Vinnie Jones. The first one is "The Big Ugly," which also stars Ron Perlman and Malcolm McDowell. It's one we had a bit of trouble with, despite the cast. The second one is "Bullet Proof," which was more of a straight-ahead actioner, and did the trick for us a little more.

DTVC Extra 18, MCU Phase 2, "Iron Man 3" and "Thor: Dark World"
"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode we're starting our look at the MCU Phase 2 with "Iron Man 3" and "Thor: Dark World." Before that, I talk a bit about the direction the DTVC Extra might go in now that we're doing weekly episodes with guests. I also get into the buzz--or non-buzz--surrounding "Madame Web." With "Iron Man 3," I look at why this was so successful, and how it measures up to the other two; and then with "Thor: Dark World," I try to make sense of the film, and make sense of how these Thor movies make so much money.

DTVC Podcast 145, "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance"
In this episode I'm joined once again by Mitch from the Video Vacuum, as we look at the Nicolas Cage Marvel flick "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance." We get into how it feels almost like a DTV flick, also Nicolas Cage's unleashed performance, and how one-offs from Marvel that aren't connected to the MCU could have a place for Marvel Studios.

DTVC Extra 17, MCU Phase 1, "Captain America" and "The Avengers"
"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some of the weeks we don't have episodes of the main podcast. In this episode we're finishing our look at the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 1, with "Captain America: The First Avenger" and "The Avengers." In the first segment, I go over the history of Captain America and previous adaptations, and how important this one was to the overall success of this first phase of the MCU. Then I looked "the Avengers," where the only precedent I could find was the Laff-a-Lympics. That inevitably leads me to a rant on "retconning" and "canon," which I blame for why we haven't gotten the X-Men in the MCU yet.

DTVC Podcast 143, Malki on the Skids: "One Ranger" and "Mindcage"
Ty from Comeuppance Reviews is back for "Malki on the Skids," our look at two DTV films on Tubi for John Malkovich. First we look at the second-most recent from Jesse V. Johnson, "One Ranger." Who has the best voice in this one, Malki or Thomas Jane? After that we get into "Mindcage." It reminds us some of the old TNT New Classic, so we get into that time for movies. We also look at what home improvement projects Malki might be funding with these films.

DTVC Extra 16, MCU Phase 1, "Iron Man 2" and "Thor"
"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some of the weeks we don't have episodes of the main podcast. In this episode we're continuing our look at the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 1, with "Iron Man 2" and "Thor." I pick up where we left off in 2008, and look at what happen in 2009 with "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and the purchase of Marvel by Disney. From there I look at why "Iron Man 2" worked well, and also how it was unique as a sequel because it was not only working to further Iron Man's story, but also set up the events leading to "Avengers." And then with "Thor" I look at Thor as a Marvel hero, and how incredible I think it is that he's become this big. I also look at "X-Men: First Class," which came out that same year, and how Marvel Studios was able to make "Thor" into someone who could lead movies that were as big or bigger than X-Men films.

Scott Murphy from All 90s Action, All the Time and New Horror Express is back to discuss another Steven Seagal DTV flick, this time 2006's "Shadow Man." We get into some of the classic Seagal DTV tropes, and judge how good or bad they are here. DTVC Extra 15, MCU Phase 1, "Iron Man" and "Incredible Hulk"
"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some of the weeks we don't have episodes of the main podcast. In this episode we're starting our look at the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 1, with "Iron Man" and "Incredible Hulk." I start by going into the history of live action adaptations of Marvel comics, plus what DC was doing, and how that led to Marvel Studios creating their own films, of which Iron Man was the first. From there I'll get into what made Iron Man work so well, and how it would eventually lead to Marvel changing the game and coming out on top above DC. In the second segment, I look at the Incredible Hulk. I talk about the old TV show and the impact it had on me, also my own experience collecting comics, and why the Ang Lee one didn't work for me. And then I wrap the episode talking about why we haven't had another Hulk film, and the lessons I think Disney could learn from how 2008 was so successful, versus the relative lack of success they've had this year.

DTVC Extra 14, The Bloodfist Franchise: Bloodfist VII, Bloodfist VIII, and Bloodfist 2050
"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some of the weeks we don't have episodes of the main podcast. In this episode we're finishing our series looking at the Bloodfist films with "Bloodfist VII: Manhunt," "Bloodfist VIII: Trained to Kill," and "Bloodfist 2050." With part VII, we look at how this continues the theme of Wilson against the world with a woman helping him out, also Art Camacho as fight coordinator, and how this feels like part of the end of that golden age of DTV action between the late 80s and early 90s. For part VIII, we talk about how, even one year later, this feels like something from a totally different time. We also get more into where Wilson's career goes from here, that this feels like the beginning of the end of his great era as a DTV lead. Finally, we not only look at "Bloodfist 2050," but I get into where this franchise could have gone, and wonder why Corman didn't slap the name "Bloodfist" on more titles after this.

DTVC Podcast 140, "Detective Knight: Independence" and "Hellblazers"
Ty from Comeuppance Reviews is back to discuss two more DTV films from Tubi. First we go back to the Willis Well and finish off the Detective Knight series with "Detective Knight: Independence." Does this one build off the surprisingly not bad nature of the previous one? After that we go back to Bruce Dern with "Hellblazers." This might be the best Dern we've seen since we've been doing these movies.

DTVC Extra 13, The Bloodfist Franchise: Bloodfist V and Bloodfist VI
"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some of the weeks we don't have episodes of the main podcast. In this episode we're solo again as I continue our series looking at the Bloodfist films with "Bloodfist V: Human Target" and "Bloodfist VI: Ground Zero." With part V, we look at Wilson as a now established DTV star, and this paradigm that we see in a lot of Bloodfist movies starting with IV--Wilson against the world with a woman helping him out. For part VI, we get into how this is one of the ones that gets away from that paradigm by going the Die Hard route, and I also discuss how computers in action movies work, then go off on a tangent about my generation and Oregon Trail.

DTVC Extra 12, The Bloodfist Franchise: Bloodfist III and Bloodfist IV
"DTVC Extra" are usually shorter solo episodes that I post on some of the weeks we don't have episodes of the main podcast, but in this special episode, we're joined by Jon from After Movie Diner and Miscellaneous Plumbing Fixtures to continue our look at the Bloodfist films with "Bloodfist III" and "Bloodfist IV." With the first one, we look at this as a prison film, the funny names of some of Wilson's fellow prisoners, and the performance by Richard Roundtree. For part IV, we get into how much action is in this, and the combination of Wilson and Gary Daniels, making this one of the best of the franchise. Also, in the opening, I give my take on The Marvels.

Ty from Comeuppance Reviews is back to discuss two more DTV films from Tubi. First we go back to the Willis Well and look at "Detective Knight: Redemption" continuing the Willis Det. Knight saga. Is this one more or less of a slog than the first one? After that we look at "Invincible," another film written and directed by Daniel Zirilli, starring Johnny Strong, Marko Zaror, and Michael Pare, with cinematography by Wych Kaosayananda. In addition to that, we chat about the old days of UPN and the WB, complete with Ty finding an old WB promo.

In this episode we start our series looking at the Bloodfist films with "Bloodfist" and "Bloodfist II." With the first one, we look at Wilson as a new DTV star, Corman's approach to movies, and keeping this film under 90 minutes. For the second one, we get into how this is the only sequel that has any connection to the one before it, and look at the use of actors from the previous film who weren't playing the same part. I also get into the process of watching Tubi films on a jetBlue flight.

In this special Halloween solo podcast, I count down my ten favorite horror films. With each one, I give some background on why that movie is special to me. Some hints on ones that made the cut: "It's rainin' Depp, hallelujah it's rainin' Depp!"; one of the greatest dance scenes of all time; and "did you have to drink some chuck?"

After that we look at "Phoenix," written and directed by Daniel Zirilli, and starring Natalie Eva Marie and Neal McDonough. In this episode we finish our series looking at the Expendables films with "The Expendables 3" and "Expend4bles." With part 3, I look at how this was sauteed in wrong sauce, but tried to understand why Stallone went the way he did with it. Then with part 4, I talk about whether or not this film should've even been made, and if this was the movie worth waiting 10 years for.

In this episode we start our series looking at the Expendables films with "The Expendables" and "The Expendables 2." With the first one, I get into some of the context in which the film was released, when we as action fans were looking for exactly what Stallone delivered to us; I also look at how this film brought Dolph back into the mainstream. Then with the second one, I talk about Van Damme as the baddie and the great job he did, plus how Stallone delivered again on what we as action fans wanted out of these movies..

In this episode we finish our series looking at the Kickboxer films with "Kickboxer: Vengeance" and "Kickboxer: Retaliation." With the first one, we look at what this reboot meant after 20 years from part 5. How does Moussi compare to other leads in the series? Then with the second one, I talk about how this movie was too long, all the names in it, and whether the baddie worked or not. Finally, we wrap by looking at Van Damme's career arc between the first film and the last one.

In this episode we continue our series looking at the Kickboxer films with "Kickboxer 3: The Art of War," "Kickboxer 4: The Aggressor," and "Redemption: Kickboxer 5." With part 3, we look at ways in which this was sauteed in wrong sauce, the low-rent Joe Izuzu for a baddie, and Sasha Mitchell's too sweet pants in the final scene. Then with part 4, I talk about Albert Pyun's return to the series, and his darker take on Kickboxer with Sasha Mitchell. What if he had had a chance to make his Kickboxer sequels he wasn't able to make? Finally, in part 5, we discuss Dacascos's martial arts, and James Ryan's baddie, plus speculate on why nothing further was done with Kickboxer for 20 years after this one. Also throughout the episode, we look at IMDb lists of what aired on WSBK TV 38 in Boston during the months of April, June, and July of 2001.

In this episode we start our series looking at the Kickboxer films with "Kickboxer" and "Kickboxer 2." With Kickboxer, I get nostalgic for the late 80s, and talk about the Van Damme we had then, who was a rising star. Then with Kickboxer 2, I talk about the issues Albert Pyun had with Van Damme on Cyborg, whether or not that contributed to Van Damme passing on working on this, and what we got by having Sasha Mitchell instead.

First we discuss "Villain," a film with more depth and drama than the tin would have you believe. Second we look at "Rise of the Foot Soldier III" co-starring Billy Murray, during which after Will gives context between London and Essex, I go off on a big tangent about North Jersey in relation to New York City.

DTVC Extra 5, The Fast and Furious Franchise: F9 and Fast X
"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some of the weeks we don't have episodes of the main podcast. In this episode we finish our series looking at the Fast and Furious films with "F9: The Fast Saga" and "Fast X." I look at how F9 (which I call Fast 9 to make it easier) is one of the comfort food franchises people were looking for when theaters opened up again in 2021. Then with Fast X, I talk about my first trip to the theater to see a blockbuster in years, and how much that experience has changed since my last time going. I also compare the tail end of the franchise to a sitcom that may have been holding on too long to make it to rerun syndication, complete with going to space being the jumping of the shark, and the addition of the kid to the cast in Fast X--all we needed was that "very special episode" to make it complete.

DTVC Extra 4, The Fast and Furious Franchise: Fate of the Furious and Hobbs and Shaw
"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some of the weeks we don't have episodes of the main podcast. In this episode we continue the series looking at the Fast and Furious films, moving to "Fate of the Furious" and "Hobbs and Shaw." I look at how Fate of the Furious is able to maintain the success of Furious 7, but also the turmoil that comes at the end of production when Hobbs and Shaw was announced. Then with Hobbs and Shaw, I talk about why this one doesn't do as well. Was it the quality of the film? Were we seeing the "Disney Effect" that also crushed Terminator: Dark Fate that year? Maybe a combination of both?
