73 Words in the 732: Finale
Guest Host Josephine Duque Dominique shares some of the final stories from the 2023 "73 Words in the 732" competition.
The Moth by Phyllis Francese A moth is trapped between the screen and glass of my patio door. It crawled in through some small hole. It flits about, landing on the glass and then the screen, not remembering how it got in. It flies from screen to glass, glass to screen casting its shadow on the drapes. Perhaps it will find its way out. Perhaps not. Inexperienced by Carol Smith
The red and white sail catches the wind and the sunfish flies across Barnegat Bay. With my brother at the rudder, we’re two kids having fun, learning something new. Time to turn. Quick, duck. Come about, come about, come about! Blast. In the bay. Hey brother, come back for me!
El diablo by Donna Lee Golderg
Magenta is a gentle dog. Because she’s a fierce barker, Ilan nicknamed her El Diablo. On a recent walk, Magenta and Leah met him and Isabella and their dogs Ziti and Dahlia. Ilan was nervous; he didn't believe Magenta would play with their two dachshunds. Surprise! The doggy trio sniffed, played and walked together. “Amazing,” Ilan announced. ”Magenta needs a new nickname. She's no longer El Diablo. She is now Cachorrita, little puppy.”
note: cachorrita is Spanish feminine for puppy.
73 Words in the 732: More Stories
Guest Host Barry Schwartzstein shares some of the other stories from the 2023 "73 Words in the 732" competition.
Eyes of a Child by PO
He gathered them all around to show his new sculptures he just finished. After looking for sometime one said “How come you never put faces on your work?”
You can add how you feel and what each of you see in the statue, he replied. After a short time, the little one said” I see a fun and loving face.
Just like you, Grandpa.
The Black Mermaid by Shikhar Dixit
Her origins are lost in the mists of time. Shadows of rumors place her far back in ancient Mesopotamia. A Muslim cleric living in the shadow of Turkey's Mount Nemrut claims she was discovered by nomadic Homo Ergaster upon African savannahs. Physicists speculate on the black substance, resistant to any and all methods of modern forensic inquiry, including the powerful Zetawatt-Equivalent Ultrashort Pulse Laser. Her very presence induces horrific nightmares.
The Past Does Not Equal The Future by Shaunak Chattopadhyay
As a high school student, Todd was introverted, bullied and had little friends. Now, he is a fitness Youtuber, an application designer at a software company, an entrepreneur, investor and works with multiple companies for sponsorship deals. He uses the money to help fund start ups and provide aid to charities and his family. Despite having a rough time in high school, Todd did not let it define him forever.

73 Words in the 732: Joseph Patrick Pascale
On this episode of 73 Words in the 732, we interview author Joseph Patrick Pascale and he shares the story, "The Businessman & the Poet"
A poet and a businessman were standing at the end of a long bread line. The businessman kept looking at his wristwatch and squinting toward the front of the line. The poet was observing everything—other people, puffs of cloud overhead, the texture of gravel underfoot.
The businessman said to the poet, “Ugh! Don’t you hate how much of the day is wasted waiting for things?”
The poet responded, “I’m not waiting. I’m living.”

On this episode of 73 Words in the 732, we share the story, "Remembering Mom" by Deanna Perlmutter
You lived for 87 years and somehow it just was not enough. To write a 73 word ode about you is a difficult task. I will say, you were an avid reader and loved the library like a third child. You picked books and the library got them for you. You instilled in us the importance of education and reading. We will continue to read and enjoy it, to honor your memory! Love you Mom!

73 Words in the 732: A. Lee
On this episode of 73 Words in the 732, we share the story, "The Afghan" by A. Lee.
Fluorescent lights buzz overhead inside the dusty old thrift store - and in my hands, a homespun afghan drapes over my fingertips. There's a superstition within the crochet community that your soul is imbued in the things you create, so it’s wise to leave a mistake: a door for your soul to escape, if need be.
I examine the afghan, admiring the intricate designs. “Flawless,” I whisper - an unnatural warmth pouring from its stitches.

73 Words in the 732: Andrea Santo Felcone
On this episode of 73 Words in the 732, we share the story, "Tea & Misery" by Andrea Santo Felcone
Forcing Jesse to have “afternoon tea like The Royals” felt extra passive-aggressive, even by Lisa’s standards. He’d told her before: coffee (with cake) was for happy times; while tea (with honey and lemon) was for misery: divorce, funerals, illness.
Everyone knew this. Everyone except Lisa.
Lisa loved Chamomile--it “soothed her”. Funny, she didn’t seem so “soothed” while tossing his belongings out after he refused ‘afternoon tea’.
Tea: The beverage of ‘break-ups’, too.

73 Words in the 732: Monica Shah
On this episode of 73 Words in the 732, we share the story, "Be Careful What You Wish for (Because Fae are Sneaky)" by Monica Shah.
A little girl named Isabelle was playing in East Brunswick Woods. She enjoyed skipping along verdant mossy trails and finding tiny froglings in the creek. But soon it became dark and Isabelle realized she was lost. Frightened, she whispered out loud “I wish I was home.” A shimmering fairy appeared and fluttered a silver wand above her head. Isabelle turned into an oak tree, a being very much at home in the woods.

She didn’t hear the sirens screaming behind her. The cop cars whizzed by in a panic, swirling up the dirt around her like a dust devil. They squealed as they turned at the next street. Her street.
