Russian military blames mobile phone use for deadly Ukrainian strike: 89 soldiers killed in New Year's Day attack
Stunning revelation as Russian defense ministry claims banned phone use allowed Ukrainian forces to locate and attack facility housing soldiers.
Russia has blamed the use of mobile phones by military personnel for a deadly attack by Ukrainian forces on a facility housing Russian soldiers. The attack, which occurred on New Year's Day and is the deadliest known assault on Russian forces during the conflict, resulted in the deaths of 89 soldiers, according to Russian military officials. The Russian defense ministry said the use of mobile phones allowed the Ukrainian forces to locate and attack the facility, and that all necessary measures were being taken to prevent future incidents. Ukrainian forces are believed to have launched six missiles at the facility using the US-supplied Himars rocket system, with four hitting the building and causing the ceilings to collapse.
McCarthy's Speaker Bid in Jeopardy as GOP Lawmakers Oppose His Leadership
Republicans Brace for Unprecedented Outcome as Speaker Vote Looms.
The vote for the new Speaker of the US House of Representatives is currently underway, with Republican leader Kevin McCarthy and Democrat leader Hakeem Jeffries in the running. McCarthy is facing opposition from some conservative lawmakers, and needs almost unanimous support from his party to win the vote. A failure of McCarthy's bid would be unusual and could indicate the unstable state of the Republican majority, with intense political battles expected over issues such as immigration and the debt ceiling in the coming years. The vote is being conducted via an alphabetical roll-call, and could go to a second ballot if no candidate receives a majority.
