Elevated Office Podcast - S2E16 - Ideas For Mitigating Arborist Liabilities With Levi Conrad Part1
What a lot of contract Tree Climbers, Arborists, and even Tree Service owners don't realize, is just how much potential liability we can have brought against us in our professions. Some of it may be due to poor decisions or poor tree care practices. Another part of the liability is, what we notice, or don't notice, and what we tell, or document for the clients.
In part one of this Elevated Office Podcast episode, Levi Conrad and I go over a few ideas that may help you to re-evaluate your methods to prevent future liabilities.
Levi Conrad Biography:
Levi is a consulting arborist and former owner of Levi Conrad Professional Tree Care. Levi works primarily as a subject matter expert in matters that involve trees and electrical lines. Levi is an ISA Certified Arborist, ISA utility specialist, CTSP, and is TRAQ qualified.

DISCLAIMER:
Levi Conrad, nor myself claim to know the legal regulations or statutes. Nor do either of us claim to have answers to keep you out of liability issues. We hope that these episodes will help you think about your decisions as a Tree Profession so that we can all have long, and profitable careers.

Elevated Office Podcast - S2E15 - How I Climb: Silky Zubat Polesaw
Somewhat frequently, I'm asked about my style of Tree climbing. I actually find it a bit difficult to explain during a conversation, instead of video. So, to make it easier for me to explain my style and method of climbing, I've decided to break down my Tree climbing techniques and methods into smaller topics. Todays Elevated Office Podcast episode talks about how I use my Silky Zubat Pole Saw in my climbing for production tree work.
Elevated Office Podcast - S2E14 - Drawing The Moral Line For Tree Work
As an Arborist, are you considering where to draw the Ethical and Moral Line of Tree work that you are willing to do? If so, where are you drawing the lines?
If you don't understand what Ethical lines exist in the Arborist's world, then you will be introduced to a few situations that need to be carefully considered before you decide to proceed, or if you need to simply refuse to do the job.
Elevated Office Podcast - S2E13 - Are You Planning For Injury
In an industry like Arborist work, Tree Climbing, and hazard storm damage, there is always a good chance that we can get injured. This is only multiplied by the fact that most of us are active people in our recreational time. As I recently wrecked my dirt bike, and broke my arm at the shoulder socket, it really made me think about how many of us are planning for unexpected injuries that we may receive while, on the job, or off. In this episode, I talk about some of things you might want to keep in mind, and what options you might want to explore to prepare for major injuries that may put us out of work for sometime.

Elevated Office - S2E11 - When To Down Grade Your Arborist Equipment
Episode 11 of Season 2 of Elevated Office Podcast is all about when Arborist/Tree Climber equipment down grades make the most sense. In this episode I talk about 2 personal situations, where "down grading" my equipment model made more sense for me, and a couple of other situations that I know are common for Tree climbers to down grade their equipment for better performance/efficiency.
This episode also covers a little bit about sponsor, "influencers", and the role they play in my podcast and how their role effects you all.

Elevated Office S2E10 - Arborist Tree Climbing With 2 Lanyards
There have been a number of comments made about the fact that I climb with 2 lanyards. Some people just don't get why I would even think it's a good idea. So, in this episode, I talk about why I climb with 2 lanyards, what I think about the cons of climbing with 2 lanyards, the safety benefits of climbing with 2 lanyards, and I also review the Petzl Zillon lanyard.
I hope you like the show.

Elevated Office Podcast S2E6: All About The Groundies...
Todays episode was inspired by Martin, (Treeman0311 on Instagram). He actually mentioned talking about the importance of rope handling/rigging, but I thought that before we get into that niche topic, it would be good to talk about the Groundsman/Grounds person/Groundie. So, that's what this episode is all about. We'll cover topics like:
- What is a Groundie
- Attitude of a Groundie
- Skills of a Groundie
- Tools A Groundie might/should have
- Concept potential for Groundies

Elevated Office Podcast S2E5 - Arborist Education - Things To Think About
As industries develop, concepts flourish, safety concerns become more obvious, and clients become more aware. As an industry, Arboriculture is no different. It grows, changes, develops, refines, and even becomes more complicated a bit, each year. Now, more than ever, being educated is an important part of an arborist toolkit that they have to think about. Certifications and education can help gain important, and needed business for your company. On the other hand, not being educated can limit your scope of potential customers and clients.
In this episode, I go over some of the reasons that I see for education to be on an arborist radar, how this can place you ahead in the tree service job bidding game, and how you can get educated yourself.
Please check out the links for a few places to get some quality education.

At last, I think I've found it! While I was quite hesitant at first, (mainly because the Red, yellow, and Black version of this jacket featured on Barlett looks like a clowns jacket), I could have saved myself an couple hundred dollars if I had just bought this jacket to begin with. Solidur's Forest Infinity "Chainsaw Jacket" (as they call it), is really we'll built and has most of the features I had been looking for. Even though the name is a bit misleading (It's not a chainsaw protection jacket in any form...), it does have a number of well thought out features. So, let's get to the pros and cons, and why I think you might want to give this jacket a go.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Part 1:
There are a lot of things that you should think about before starting out on the journey of owning/running your own small business. As arborist, there are a number of things that I've experienced, and others have told me that they've experienced. Some of these things are commonly expected, but many are things people don't think about before they jump into running their own company. Here are 5 things that I think you should know before your start your own tree service company. This is part 1- Mental Stress
Part 2:
If stress is the the number one underestimated aspect of starting a small business/Small Tree Service Company, the other 4 things of 5 Things You Should Know Before Starting A Small Tree Service Company all make up the stress that you have to manage. While I knew that there would be more needed than just a chainsaw, and truck, I personally underestimated the shear volume of how many small value items I would need to buy to keep my small tree service company going. In part 2 of 5 Things You Should Know Before Starting A Small Tree Service Company, I go over some of the multiples of things that you might find yourself buying to run your tree service company, and how they can become an economic burden if you are not prepared for such expenses...
Part 3:
In Part 3 of 5 Important Things About Owning A Small Tree Service Business, we go over an unexpected challenge of ebbs and flows in tree work. This includes more that just getting work. It also includes certain aspects of the work you win, and actually do.
Part 4:
One of my, personally, biggest challenges with running a small tree service business, is the need to quickly change roles as is needed. While we have to do many things to keep our companies running and profitable, my biggest role change complication is going from being a production arborist to being a sales arborist in a few minutes... Here's a little view of why it's hard for me, and why it may be hard for you too...
Part 5:
My constant maintenance list of equipment to repair, maintenance, schedule for maintenance, or pieces that I'm looking to upgrade/replace is probably my most daunting aspect of running a small tree service company. This particular aspect of running a tree service company can effect everything about your business. Many don't realize it, but the "maintenance" topic can effect income, profit, reputation, and scheduling. Therefore, it can even effect employee/contractor availability and loyalty.

Tree Service/Arborist/Tree Climbing work is not an easy kind of work to perform. It's almost as difficult to balance expenses as it is to actually do the work. While some larger arborist/tree service companies will need to invest more money into expensive equipment, being able to balance investment versus debt expenses is extremely Important.
So, in todays episode, I go over a few tips that some successful business men have personally taught me, some that I've learned from business coaches, and some that I've learned through others bad decisions. Make no mistake though, this topic is not cut and dry, and I've made my own share of bad decisions. Most likely, I'll make more in time. Hopefully though, I can help you mitigate the gravity, and quantity of bad investment decisions and help us all to be profitable in our Tree Service Careers.
Please let me know what you think, what topics you might like me to cover, and leave me comments. I may just include them in a future episode.

A large part of owning/running, and building a successful Tree Service Company is being able to push through uncomfortable, physically fatiguing, mentally excruciating, and money losing times. For me, the last to weeks have had all of these factors in abundance. So, it seems. Because of this, I had to find a way to push through, get the job done, make my arborist reputation as good as I can, and still not loose focus on the fact that this is just one bad job.
Honestly, it's not easy to over come these odds when they all stack up against you. So, how did I beat the mental game that we Tree Climbers/Arborist/Small business owners face? I explain it all in this episode. Take a listen, and I'm sure that you'll get some tips to help you out in situations where you just want the Job to go away, and you feel like throwing in the towel.
Please don't forget to comment, or leave a recorded message on how you deal with these kinds of jobs, or about other topics that you would like me to cover on the podcast.

DIy Stump Grinding Guard Review Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFuUi0ZbYZU
In work environments it's common that familiarity and complacency cause accidents. As a tree service company, I find that these two factors can effect my judgment on stump grinding quotes.
Keeping in mind the realities of what is involved in stump grinding, how dangerous it really is, and what all needs to be done to make sure that me and my groundsmen are safe, has helped me bid jobs more appropriately. Being mindful of the realities has helped me to take the needed time to look over the property more thoroughly, take note of dangers, and analize what precautions need to be take to avoid damage to property and people.
In this podcast I go over some of the factors I keep in mind, how I look at the biding process, and what DIY Tool can benefit your company for stump grinding work while being realistic and budget friendly.

Does your tree service company have Arborist General Liability Insurance? Does your small company really need insurance? What might you want to think about if you are looking at getting insurance? Are there any specific things you should ask your agent about arborist insurance?
These are all common questions that I see asked regularly online from people that are looking at starting a tree service, or that own a small tree service. So, while I'm not a licensed insurance agent, and I can't officially state details, or advice on insurance, I can let you know a little about what I've learned. I also explain my reasons for the ways that I view arborist insurance versus other forms of insurance that some trees service companies carry from time to time.
Elevated Office: S1E7: Should You Except/Bid On All Jobs?
Some say that you should never refuse a tree job. Or, that you should, at least, provide an estimate for every job that you are asked to look at.
Honestly though, I don't fully agree with this idea. In this episode of Elevated Office, I go over why I do refuse some jobs, what factors, I usually consider, and how I explain to the customers that I'm not interested in bidding, or taking on the job.
Please let me know in the comments if you ever refuse jobs, why, or why not, and how you go about explaining your decision to the customer.
